He found that some plates of bacteria had been left unwashed, and one of them was covered with a strange blue-green mould. Around the mould, there was a clear circle where the bacteria could not grow. Fleming realised that the mould must be producing something that killed the bacteria, and he later named it penicillin. However, turning the discovery into a real medicine was not easy. Fleming did not have the machines or money needed to produce it in large amounts, so for years few people paid attention to his work. In the early 1940s, two other scientists developed a method to purify penicillin. During the Second World War, it saved the lives of thousands of wounded soldiers. In 1945, Fleming and the two scientists shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Fleming’s story reminds us that chance favours the prepared mind. He stayed curious about small facts that others might ignore, and his careful observation changed the history of modern medicine. 26.What did Fleming find when he returned to his laboratory? A.A new kind of bacteria. B.A mould that seemed to kill bacteria. C.A bottle of ready-made penicillin. D.A machine for washing plates. 27.Why was it difficult to turn penicillin into a real medicine at first? A.Fleming was not interested in his own discovery. B.The mould was too rare to find in nature. C.Fleming lacked the machines and money to produce it in large amounts. D.Doctors refused to use any new medicine at that time. 28.Who developed a method to purify penicillin? A.Two other scientists. B.Fleming himself. C.Some wounded soldiers. D.Some doctors in London. 29.What does the writer want to tell us in the last paragraph? A.Scientists should take holidays more often. B.Luck alone is enough for great discoveries. C.Small facts are not worth scientists’ attention. D.Careful observation helps turn chance into discovery. 30.What can be the best title for the text? A.The Discovery of Penicillin B.How to Win the Nobel Prize C.The Life of Wounded Soldiers D.Bacteria in the Laboratory 五、阅读七选五 Science is not just a list of facts to remember; it is a way of finding answers.    31     In fact, most scientific work follows several clear steps. First, scientists notice a problem and ask a question.    32     Without a clear question, even the best scientist would not know where to begin. Next, they collect information and form a possible answer, which is called a hypothesis. Then they design experiments to test it.    33     If the results do not support it, they change their idea and try again. After many tests, the results are shared with other scientists, who check them carefully.    34     This is why science grows stronger step by step instead of standing still.    35     So next time you study science, do not only memorise facts — try to think like a scientist. A.A good question often comes from careful observation. B.Some people think science is too difficult to learn. C.Experiments may prove the idea wrong, but that is still progress. D.However, it is a mistake to think that discoveries happen by magic. E.Their honest checks help remove mistakes and make the results more reliable. F.Scientists never share their results with others. G.Every great discovery began with a question worth asking. 参考答案 1.substance 2.insist 3.apparent 4.acknowledgement 5.evaluation 6.analyst 7.treatment 8.remedy 9.herb 10.symptom 11.commitment 12.acknowledged 13.analysing 14.obtained 15.scientific 16.conclusion 17.evaluation 18.distinction 19.discovery 20.passionate 21. made great advancement in 22. give reasons for 23.
