The violin concerto Butterfly Lovers
Another example of music without boundaries
Butterfly Lovers: A Great Chinese Musical Treasure
Chen Gang, one of the two composers of the world-famous violin concerto Butterfly Lovers, passed away in Shanghai on July 18, 2026, at the age of 91.
Back in 1959, Chen Gang and his classmate He Zhanhao created this great piece when they were still college students. It was written to celebrate the 10th birthday of the People’s Republic of China. The music is based on a traditional Chinese folk love story, known as China’s own Romeo and Juliet. It borrows beautiful tunes from Yue Opera, a local Chinese opera style.
Surprisingly, the whole work uses Western symphony structure and is played on the violin. It perfectly mixes traditional Chinese culture with Western music, a wonderful example of cultural fusion (文化融合).
For over 60 years, Butterfly Lovers has been played all over the world. It has become the best-known Chinese violin concerto and builds a bridge between Eastern and Western art.
