Terry will never forget that day in 1968. Four-year-old Terry Hill and her younger brother Mikey were left alone in the car as their father went into a 16 . Terry was in the back seat while Mikey was in the front seat. Mikey wasn’t wearing a seat belt. 17 moved over to the driver’s seat. As they waited for their father, Mikey was playing with the steering wheel (方向盘). Somehow, he hit the gear shift (换挡器). Because their car was 18 on a small hill, it started moving back slowly. There were cars coming and going all around at that moment.
Terry tried to open the door. However, it was too 19 for a 4-year-old girl. She didn’t know 20 to do. Just then, Terry saw her dad 21 out of the shop. But running right in front of him was someone else: a young man. He reached the car first, 22 the brake (刹车) on and saved Terry and her brother just in time.
For over 50 years, Terry has always remembered how the stranger 23 helped them out without thinking twice. “He ran to the car, got the door open, moved my brother over and put the brake on. Everything 24 so fast,” Terry said. “He 25 saw what needed to be done and acted immediately. That has had a huge influence on me for my whole life.”
16.A.shop B.school C.farm D.bank
17.A.It B.He C.She D.They
18.A.parked B.found C.washed D.bought
19.A.easy B.small C.heavy D.far
20.A.why B.where C.when D.what
21.A.driving B.rushing C.looking D.waiting
22.A.saw B.spent C.put D.touched
23.A.happily B.slowly C.bravely D.rudely
24.A.happened B.stopped C.moved D.changed
25.A.still B.also C.already D.just
16.A 17.B 18.A 19.C 20.D 21.B 22.C 23.C 24.A 25.D
It指物,She指Terry但Terry在后座,They指两人但只有一人移动。
“疑问词 + to do”结构;didn’t know what to do“不知道该做什么”,what作do的宾语;why为什么,where在哪里,when什么时候,均不符合“不知道如何应对”的语境。
A
Unlike what you may imagine, taking good care of a plant can be difficult, especially when it comes to how to water a plant. Many people are not sure how often or how much they need to water their plants. Even some farmers may have the same problem. Luckily, a new technology called GrowStream can help them “talk” to their plants.
GrowStream is a watering system. Its tubes (管子) have special tiny holes in them. When plants need water, they will release (分泌) chemicals (化学物质) through their roots. When the holes detect (察觉) these chemicals, they will open. The plants then get water from these holes. As the plants “drink” enough water, they stop releasing these chemicals. And that “tells” the holes to close back up and stop watering.
This system can help save 45 to 50 percent more water than common watering systems. It was created by a company called RDI. The company has brought the GrowStream system to many farms in South Africa. It is also testing the system in the US. It will be used to make the city greener while saving more water.
“GrowStream is more than just a technology,” said Jan Gould, CEO of RDI. “We want it to ‘talk’ to people, too. It ‘says’ two things: The earth’s natural resources (资源) are limited, and we should take better care of the planet through new technology.”
26.Why is it difficult to water a plant?
A.Plants need too much water. B.Watering a plant takes too much time.
C.It is hard to discover whether the plant needs water. D.Some farmers don’t teach you how to water a plant.
27.How does GrowStream make sure plants “drink” enough water?
A.By providing water all the time. B.By putting water into the plants’ roots.
C.By releasing chemicals to help the plants “drink” enough water. D.By detecting the amount of chemicals that the plants release.
28.What does the word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Plants. B.Holes. C.Chemicals. D.Tubes.
29.What is the main advantage of this new system?
A.Cheap to buy. B.Easy to use. C.Saving water. D.Saving time.
30.What does Jan Gould mean by saying the words?
A.The earth is heavily polluted. B.People can talk with GrowStream.
C.New technology can help save natural resources. D.We have to find more natural resources.
【答案】26.C 27.D 28.A 29.C 30.C
第一段点明:“Many people are not sure how often or how much they need to water their plants.”,说明人们难以判断植物是否需要浇水,也就导致浇水这件事有难度。
27.第二段介绍:“When the holes detect these chemicals, they will open...As the plants ‘drink’ enough water, they stop releasing these chemicals.”,该系统通过检测植物分泌的化学物质多少来控制供水,保证植物喝足水分。
28.第二段描述:“As the plants ‘drink’ enough water, they stop releasing these chemicals.”,句中动作“停止分泌化学物质”的发出者是植物,“they”指代前文出现的“plants”。
29.第三段突出优势:“This system can help save 45 to 50 percent more water than common watering systems.”,能比普通灌溉系统节省大量水资源,核心优点就是节水。
30.第四段引用:“we should take better care of the planet through new technology.”,意在说明新技术能够帮助节约地球自然资源、守护地球。
B
When 16-year-old Wang Lin from Beijing first saw a shadow puppet show at the age of seven, she was fascinated. The colourful puppets and the performers’ skilled finger movements seemed magical to her. “I felt really close to this art right away,” she says.
However, when Wang Lin entered high school, things changed. Her classmates thought puppetry was old-fashioned and made fun of her hobby. “They said it was for old people, not for teenagers,” she recalls. Slowly, Wang Lin felt less close to puppetry and stopped practising for almost two years.
Last summer, Wang Lin attended a traditional culture camp in her city. There, she met 70-year-old Master Chen, a famous puppet performer. “Puppetry is not just an art — it carries our history and stories,” Master Chen told the teenagers. “If you give it a chance, it will speak to you.”
Master Chen’s words touched Wang Lin deeply. She started practising again, this time with more passion than ever. She also used social media to share videos of her performances. To her surprise, many of her classmates started showing interest. “Now they think it’s pretty cool!” she says happily.
Wang Lin now leads a teenage puppet team at her school. “It’s our duty to keep this art alive,” she says. “Puppetry is not old-fashioned at all. It’s amazing, and everyone can feel close to it if they try.”

D.Because she lost interest in all traditional arts.
33.What did Master Chen say about puppetry?
A.It is only for old people. B.It is too difficult for teenagers.

A.She gave them money to watch shows.

D.She forced them to join her team.
35.What is the main message of this passage?
A.Teenagers should not practise traditional arts.
B.Shadow puppetry will disappear because it’s old.
C.Young people can help keep traditional arts alive.
D.Only old people can understand puppet shows.
根据第一段“When 16‑year‑old Wang Lin from Beijing first saw a shadow puppet show at the age of seven, she was fascinated.”
32.根据第二段“Her classmates thought puppetry was old‑fashioned and made fun of her hobby.”

Online shopping has become a huge part of daily life. Imagine that you are looking online for a new pair of shoes. Just before paying, you notice an attractive choice: “Pay in 4 instalments (分期付款的一期).” This service, known as “Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL)”, allows you to get your item right away while paying for it in smaller parts over time. For example, a $200 jacket turns into four payments of $50. To many teenagers, this feels good because they can buy what they want without the pain of spending a lot of money at once.
However, experts warn that this convenience can quickly become a problem. BNPL can trick you into spending more money than you actually have. Since each payment seems small, it’s easy to keep buying more things, such as shoes, clothes or phones. Before long, you are facing several payments on the same day. What once looked harmless can suddenly become difficult to manage.
Missing payments may cause even bigger trouble. If you fail to pay on time, you’ll have to pay extra fees Sometimes, late payments may even influence your credit record, and further affect your future plans such as buying a car or a house.
To avoid these problems, it is important to become a smart shopper. Instead of using BNPL too often, try saving money before buying something. Waiting a few weeks may feel hard at first, but it makes you the true owner of your money.
36.If a computer costs $1400 and you choose the “Pay in 5 instalments” plan, how much is each payment?
A.$140. B.$280. C.$300. D.$350.
37.What will happen if a teenager uses BNPL very often?
A.He will save more money. B.He will get some items for free.
C.He will get a better credit record. D.He will pay several payments on the same day.
38.If the writer wants to add a real-life example of credit trouble, where would it best belong?
A.In Paragraph 1. B.In Paragraph 2. C.In Paragraph 3. D. In Paragraph 4.
39.The passage is organized by ______.
A.problems → reasons → results B.introduction of BNPL → risks → advice
C.opinions → examples → personal stories D.different ideas about BNPL → final decision
40.What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) towards BNPL?
A.Supportive. B.Uninterested.
C.Careful and worried. D.Excited and encouraging.
第一段指出“a $200 jacket turns into four payments of $50”,说明分期付款是把总价平均分成若干份,因此1400美元分5期,每期为1400÷5=280美元。
37.第二段指出“Before long, you are facing several payments on the same day.”,说明经常使用BNPL可能导致同一天需要支付多笔款项。
38.第三段指出“Missing payments may cause even bigger trouble. If you fail to pay on time, you’ll have to pay extra fees...affect your credit record”,说明第三段讲的是信用问题带来的麻烦,因此真实案例最适合放在第三段。
40.文中指出“experts warn that this convenience can quickly become a problem”(第二段)并建议“become a smart shopper”(第四段),说明作者对BNPL持谨慎和担忧的态度。

At the beginning, it hurt. But the next no hurt a little less. Six months later, the last reply came. This time it was yes. Finally, I could go on with my archaeological work.
