① When you are trying to make friends, you will probably meet someone who just doesn’t like you, though you have never done anything to him or her. Well, what should you do? Here is some advice.
② Gossip (流言) can make meeting new people difficult, especially when people hear something bad about you. It can stop someone from getting to know you at all. When you are in a situation like this, it feels bad. Instead of trying to win them over, just be yourself. As time goes by, they will see that the gossip about you is wrong. Or they may choose to believe it. Don’t worry about it and move on by being friendly to the kind people.
③ You’d think that your friend’s friends would also become your friends. But it doesn’t work that way. Sometimes people are happy with the friendships they already have, and they aren’t interested in adding any more. If someone chooses not to be friends with you just because you are new to the group, it’s fine. There is nothing wrong with you or them.
④ An even more difficult situation is when someone has met you and just doesn’t like you. Every joke you make is taken the wrong way. Every time you try to do something nice, they find fault with it. As much as it hurts, accept that not everyone is going to be your friend. Don’t take it personally. These things could happen to everyone. Some people are just not for you.
⑤ In a word, if someone doesn’t want to be your friend, that’s OK. Don’t get angry with them because it’s their choice. Instead, give your time and attention to the people who are interested in being with you.
24. If someone chooses to believe the gossip about you, what should you do?
A. Try to win them over at once.
B. Find out where the gossip comes from.
C. Stop worrying and be friendly to kind people.
D. Tell the teacher about it immediately.
25. Why don’t your friend’s friends want to be your friends sometimes?
A. Because they think making new friends wastes time.
B. Because they are not interested in adding any more.
C. Because they worry a new friend will break their friendship.
D. Because they share no common interests with you.
26. What does the underlined sentence “Don’t take it personally.” in paragraph ④ mean?
A. You shouldn’t take it to heart.
B. You shouldn’t keep it to yourself.
C. You shouldn’t talk about it in public.
D. You shouldn’t accept it face to face.
27. What is the best title for the passage?
A. How to make new friends B. How to be popular among friends
C. What to do when others dislike you D. Why gossip stops you from making friends

“Can anyone suggest another way to play the game?” asked the teacher after seeing their reaction.
“I can,” said Thando. “You can hide the box again. We all have to hold hands and find the treasure together.”
The game started, and the children walked around the classroom, holding hands and looking for the treasure. Everyone laughed and had fun. When they found the box, they opened it together. Inside, they found 20 strips (带状物) of coloured paper.

Is a phone still a phone if it can also become a small book? Apple may soon give us an answer with its new “iPhone Duo”.
The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable (可折叠的) phone, which means the phone can fold in half. Unlike common iPhones, it has two screens (屏幕) joined together. When it is opened, it becomes a small computer with a screen about eight inches (英寸) wide. When it is closed, it works just like a usual phone and fits easily into your pocket (口袋). On the bigger screen, you can read e-books, take notes, or watch films. You can even use two apps at the same time. For example, you can find new words on one side while reading an English story on the other. That is why many young people are excited about it.
However, a foldable phone is not all good news. Reports say it may cost much more than a common iPhone because the folding screen is expensive to make. It is also thicker and heavier, and its screen may break more easily. A bigger screen needs more power, so the battery may lose power faster. What’s more, apps have to be changed to fit the bigger screen, so some of your favourite apps may not work well at first.
Even so, many students are still looking forward to it. A phone that folds into a small book may make reading and note-taking much easier. Is the iPhone Duo a real change or just a new look? Only time and the people who use it will tell.
53. How wide is iPhone Duo’s screen when it is open?
