When Lin Fang transferred (转学) to our class in October, nobody paid much attention to her. She was small and quiet, and she sat by the window with an empty chair beside her. For the first week, that chair stayed empty. Nobody wanted to move.
I didn’t talk to her either. I was busy with my own friends and my own problems. Then one rainy afternoon, I found her sitting alone in the classroom, reading a book about stars. “That’s my favourite subject,” I said before I could stop myself. She looked up, surprised, and then smiled.
The next day, I put my bag on the empty chair and asked, “Is anyone sitting here?” She shook her head. From that day on, the chair was never empty again. We ate lunch together, walked home together, and she told me that she had been afraid nobody in her new school would ever talk to her.
Months later, our class had a group project. Lin Fang’s group chose to make a model of the solar system. To everyone’s surprise, the quiet girl by the window turned out to be the best builder in the class. Her model of Saturn was so beautiful that it won first prize.
Our teacher said something that day which I have never forgotten: “A class is not a room full of desks. It is a group of people who leave a chair free for someone new.” I still think of that empty chair—and of how one small question changed everything.
34. Why did the chair beside Lin Fang stay empty at first?
A. It was broken.
B. Lin Fang wanted to sit alone.
C. Nobody in the class knew her well.
D. The teacher asked her to keep it empty.
35. What happened on the rainy afternoon?
A. Lin Fang lent the writer a book.
B. The writer started talking to Lin Fang.
C. Lin Fang cried in the classroom.
D. The writer forgot her homework.
36. What does Paragraph 4 tell us about Lin Fang?
A. Lin Fang was good at making things.
B. Lin Fang didn’t like the project.
C. The writer’s group lost the prize.
D. Lin Fang knew little about stars.
37. Which title suits the story best?
A. A Model of Saturn B. A Book About Stars
C. The Empty Chair D. A New Classmate

Copying Nature
A Swiss engineer (工程师) named George de Mestral loved walking in the countryside. One day in 1941, he came home with his socks covered in burrs (苍耳), the seeds of a wild plant. As he pulled them off, he wondered why they stuck (粘住) so tightly. Under a microscope (显微镜), he saw that each burr had hundreds of tiny hooks (钩子). That gave him an idea. He made two strips of fabric (织物)—one with hooks and one with loops—and called his invention Velcro. Today it is used on shoes, bags and even spacesuits.
Velcro is only one example of copying nature. Scientists call this idea biomimicry: looking at how living things solve problems, and then doing the same thing with human materials.
Sharks are among the fastest swimmers in the sea, but their skin is not smooth—it is covered with tiny tooth-like scales (鳞片). These scales make the water move faster over the skin, so sharks can slide through it with less effort. Copying this design, engineers made a special swimsuit fabric that helps swimmers cut through the water. It worked so well that the suit was later banned (禁用) from Olympic races.
Another famous example comes from Japan. The Shinkansen, one of the world’s fastest bullet trains, used to make a loud bang when it entered a tunnel (隧道). A young engineer who was a bird-watcher studied the kingfisher (翠鸟). This small bird dives into water to catch fish without a splash, because its long, pointed beak changes the air around it smoothly. The engineer redesigned (重新设计) the train’s nose to copy the kingfisher’s beak. The new train is not only quieter but also faster and uses less electricity.
Nature has had millions of years to test its inventions. As one scientist put it, “Why start from nothing when the answer is already swimming, flying or growing beside us?”
38. What is the article mainly about?
A. How animals protect themselves.
B. How scientists learn from nature.
C. Why engineers like travelling.
D. How trains and planes are built.
39. The underlined word “biomimicry” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. copying nature’s ideas B. growing new plants
C. protecting wild animals D. making tiny hooks
40. Why was the special swimsuit banned from Olympic races?
A. It was too expensive. B. It made swimmers tired.
C. It was bad for sharks. D. It gave swimmers too much help.
41. What is special about the Shinkansen’s new nose?
A. It was designed by a bird-watcher’s father.
B. It makes the train much slower.
C. It copied the shape of a kingfisher’s beak.
D. It uses more electricity than before.
【答案】38. B 39. A 40. D 41. C
【解析】
【导语】本文介绍了科学家和工程师通过观察自然(如苍耳、鲨鱼皮、翠鸟)来发明创造的仿生学应用。
【38题详解】
主旨大意题。 第二段指出“Scientists call this idea biomimicry: looking at how living things solve problems, and then doing the same thing with human materials.”,随后几段列举了鲨鱼皮和新干线等例子,文章主要讲科学家如何向大自然学习。
【39题详解】
词句猜测题。 第二段“looking at how living things solve problems, and then doing the same thing with human materials”解释了biomimicry的含义,即观察生物如何解决问题,然后用人类材料做同样的事,即copying nature’s ideas。
【40题详解】
细节理解题。 第三段“Copying this design, engineers made a special swimsuit fabric that helps swimmers cut through the water. It worked so well that the suit was later banned (禁用) from Olympic races.”表明,这款泳衣效果太好,给了游泳运动员太多帮助,所以被禁用。
【41题详解】
细节理解题。 第四段“The engineer redesigned the train’s nose to copy the kingfisher’s beak.”表明,新干线的新车头模仿了翠鸟的喙。
(D)
Is Reading on Screen as Good as on Paper?
These days, much of our reading happens on screens: e-books on tablets, news on phones, articles on computers. Some people say screen reading is just as good as paper reading. Others are not so sure. So which one is really better?
People who like screens have some strong points. A single tablet can hold hundreds of books, so a reader can carry a whole library in a schoolbag. Screens are also kinder to people with poor eyesight, because the letters can be made bigger with one touch. And when you do not understand a word, you can look it up in seconds without leaving the page.
However, studies have shown that we read more slowly on screens than on paper, and we remember less of what we have read. One reason may be the internet itself: a link (链接) here, a message there, and our attention is pulled away. Paper reading has no links and no messages. It is just you and the words.
There is another problem. When reading on a screen, our eyes jump around the page instead of moving in a smooth line, so our brains have to work harder to put the sentences together. Paper reading, on the other hand, feels calmer and helps readers see the “shape” of a whole text — where a chapter begins and ends, how long the last part was.
Perhaps we do not have to choose between the two. Screens are wonderful for quick reading and for carrying many books. But when we want to read carefully and remember deeply, paper is still the better choice. As one teacher said, “Read what you love. Just know which tool you are holding.”
42. What is the writer’s question in Paragraph 1?
A. Why do we read every day?
B. How can we read more quickly?
C. Which is cheaper, a tablet or a book?
D. Is screen reading as good as paper reading?
43. According to Paragraph 2, screens are good for ________.
A. readers who carry many books and readers with poor eyesight
B. people who read very slowly
C. readers who want to remember everything
D. people who do not like links
44. Why do we remember less when reading on screens?
A. Because the letters are too small.
B. Because screens hold too many books.
C. Because paper is more expensive.
D. Because our attention is often pulled away.
45. What does the writer think?
A. Paper reading is always the better choice.
B. Both have their uses, but paper is better for careful reading.
C. Screens should not be used in schools.
D. Reading on screens is bad for our eyes.
【答案】42. D 43. A 44. D 45. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,通过对比介绍了屏幕阅读与纸质阅读各自的优缺点。
【42题详解】
细节理解题,根据第一段“Some people say screen reading is just as good as paper reading. Others are not so sure. So which one is really better?”可知,作者的问题是“屏幕阅读和纸质阅读一样好吗?”。
【43题详解】
细节理解题,根据第二段列举屏幕阅读的优点“A single tablet can hold hundreds of books, so a reader can carry a whole library in a schoolbag. Screens are also kinder to people with poor eyesight”可知,一台平板能装几百本书、字体可放大、查词快,即为“随身带很多书的人”和“视力不好的人”提供便利。
【44题详解】
细节理解题,根据第三段“One reason may be the internet itself: a link here, a message there, and our attention is pulled away.”可知,屏幕阅读时,记住得更少是因为一个链接、一条消息就把读者的注意力带走了。
【45题详解】
观点态度题,根据最后一段“Screens are wonderful for quick reading and for carrying many books. But when we want to read carefully and remember deeply, paper is still the better choice.”可知,作者认为屏幕阅读和纸质阅读两者各有用处,但细读深记仍是纸质阅读更好。
四、阅读表达(本题共5小题,每小题2分,计10分)

An old clock hangs on the wall. Every evening after finishing her homework, Chen Lu goes there and works for an hour.
Two years ago, Chen Lu’s grandpa hurt his hand and could not hold a book steady. Reading had always been his greatest joy. Chen Lu decided to build a small machine that could turn the pages for him.
Her first machine was a box with a rubber (橡胶) finger. It turned the page by itself, but it turned too fast and sometimes tore the paper. Chen Lu wrote her ideas in a notebook. By the end of last year, the notebook had 63 pages. Each page told the story of a failure—and of a small step forward.
Last spring, the machine finally worked. It turns one page every ten seconds, softly and safely. Her grandpa has read eleven books with it. “I didn’t do it alone,” Chen Lu says. “My science teacher helped me, and my notebook taught me most of all.”
Chen Lu has a new dream: to make the machine cheaper so that more people can use it. “Ideas are easy,” she says. “The hard part is not giving up.”
46. Chen Lu’s workshop is the ________ ________ her home.
47. What hangs on the wall of Chen Lu’s workshop?

C. The writer’s group lost the prize.
D. Lin Fang knew little about stars.
37. Which title suits the story best?
A. A Model of Saturn B. A Book About Stars

四、阅读表达(本题共5小题,每小题2分,计10分)
读下面这篇短文,按各题要求作答,注意拼写和词数。
Chen Lu is a fourteen-year-old girl from a small town in northern China. In her class she is known as “the girl with ideas”. Her workshop is not a big laboratory but the garage behind her home.
