“Bugs” are mistakes in computer programs. The expression “computer bug” is commonly used today. Have you ever wondered where it came from?
Back in the 1940s, computers were as big as rooms. In 1947, while Grace Hopper’s team was working on the Harvard Mark II computer, they found a moth (飞蛾) stuck inside the machine. It caused the computer to stop working, so they taped the insect into their logbook and called it the first “computer bug”. People have been using the expression ever since.
Grace Hopper, an American computer scientist, was interested in learning even as a child. She was a person of many firsts. She was the first woman to receive a Ph.D. in math from Yale University, the creator of the first computer compiler (编译程序), and the leader of the team that created the computer language called COBOL.
In the 1940s, computer programmers had to “talk” directly to computers and could only use lots of numbers 0 and 1. If they wanted to tell the computer to “start,” they had to enter a code (编码) like “00 11 01 10 11”. The programmer would then have to enter a different code to tell the computer to do a different task. As you might guess, they made many mistakes entering numbers. If they entered even one number incorrectly, the code would tell the computer to do something that made no sense, and the program would not work. To find the problem, the programmer would then have to look through a thousand numbers.
Later, Hopper continued to work on computers. As she worked on her programs, she had the idea of writing a special computer program called a compiler. A compiler reads a computer language and changes it into the zeros and ones that computers need. The compiler can tell the programmer right away if a mistake is made. The code is much easier to fix now, and programming computers is much faster.
Programmers can thank Hopper, though. They still use the computer languages today.

When I was little, dancing became my first hobby. I have spent many hours practising dancing every day after school for the last eleven years. And I was proud that my hard work paid off — I became better and better at dancing. But what I was most proud of was being part of an excellent dance team. I learned a lot in the team and we won many prizes through our hard work. However, just a few weeks before the state competition, six members quit, leaving our team without a leader.
My team’s passion (热情) for the competition was cut in half. Then in the following practice, the morale (士气) of the team was always very low.
I was very worried, but I didn't want to give up. Thinking for a few days, I decided to do something to change the situation. One day, before we started our practice, I said loudly to other members in the team, “Guys, I know that we have met some difficulties, but I think if we try our best, we can make the team stronger again. I'd like to be the new leader! Just give yourselves a chance and tell our school that we can still be an excellent dance team without the girls who have left.”
At first, my words didn't make any difference. In order to encourage my team, I started to do more practice to improve my skill. On weekends, I spent hours trying to make up a creative competition routine (一套动作). I wanted my team members to love the dance.
Gradually, my team began to accept me as a real leader. Before the competition, I made sure the routine was in every girl's mind and encouraged our team to work harder. I would shout out the names of the girls who were performing well during the dance, and then the girls would dance with more energy. I also found I had got better by challenging myself.
I was proud that we were able to get our confidence back. At last, our hard work paid off and we were placed in the top five!
With a passion for something, we could overcome any difficulty with creativity and hard work.

第二节 简答题 (共5小题;每题2分,满分10分)
Imagine getting into a taxi and seeing nobody behind the steering wheel. This is the experience of riding in a driverless (无人驾驶) taxi, also known as a robotaxi. Recently, cities like Wuhan and Shenzhen in China have been testing this amazing technology.
These smart vehicles use cameras, lasers, and artificial intelligence (AI) to “see” the road and make driving decisions. One major advantage of robotaxis is their convenience. They can operate 24 hours a day, making it easier for people to travel late at night. Also, since machines don’t get tired or emotional, the rides are generally safe and steady.
However, this new technology brings challenges. Bad weather like heavy rain can sometimes confuse the car’s sensors (感应器). More importantly, if a robotaxi gets into an accident, it is difficult to decide who should take responsibility. Will it be the passenger, the car manufacturer, or the software developer?
Despite these problems, robotaxis represent an exciting future for transportation. As technology improves, they will likely become a common part of our daily lives.
46.What is another name for a driverless taxi?
47.How do robotaxis “see” the road and make decisions?
48.Why are robotaxis considered safer and steadier than human-driven cars?
49.What happens to the car's sensors during heavy rain according to the passage?
50.What is the future of robotaxis?
