Barnard star is about six late years away from earth, believed to be between seven and twelve billion years of age. Barnt star is much older than the sun, which has been around for four and a half billion years. It's also a lot cooler and smaller. In fact, barnard star is only nineteen percent of the sun's mass. As IT isn't very bright, IT isn't easy for scientists to see barnard star. There have been many theories about planets over the years, but nothing has been proven. A scientific team in south africa reported evidence of a planet circling around barnard star. Another team confirmed this using the latest technology. Why is this important? I wanted to show you that our knowledge of the universe is only so much. We are discovering more and more every day. With that in mind, please turn to page twenty in your textbook. It’s thought that the first ever Chinese restaurant opened in 1908 in the UK. This establishment was located in Piccadilly Circus, London. Although this was a massive breakthrough for the cuisine, it didn’t pick up popularity for years.
Back in the 1950’s the idea of Chinese food in the UK and America was simplistic; tinned Chinese curries (咖喱菜肴), processed foods and confused flavours, like Chinese food on pizza. Takeout restaurants were few and far between and other cuisines with less experimental flavours were favoured by Western palates (味蕾).
It wasn’t until the 1960’s and 1970’s that Chinese food began getting the recognition it should earn. More people began arriving on Western soil from China and Chinatown started development in the 1970’s, when chefs began talking about foreign flavours. One essential figure during this period was Kenneth Lo. He wrote more than 30 books on Chinese cooking from the 1950’s to the 1990’s, with over one million copies sold in Britain.
Lo also opened a cooking school in London during the 1980’s, which was hailed as (被誉为) Europe’s first Chinese cooking school. Alongside this, people began opening up to the idea of varied flavours but dishes had to make the most of the ingredients available in the West. Chinese chefs began to adapt dishes to use readily available ingredients and also appeal more to Western palates. This ended with the creation of dishes that a Western audience perceives as Chinese that you wouldn’t even find in China. For example, Chop Suey used to be one of the most popular dishes found in the West but you wouldn’t be able to find this dish with ease in China. The same goes for the beloved fortune cookies.
Nowadays, more travel of British people to China for business or leisure has exposed consumers to more varieties and both authentic (真正的) and modern Chinese flavours. No longer do those living in the West fear complex, unfamiliar and unaccustomed flavours; instead they accept the contrast and try to include them into their diet.
24. What happened to Chinese food after the first Chinese restaurant opened in London?
A. It went through great changes. B. It went unnoticed for a long time.
C. It was mainly sold as takeout food. D. It started to have a big share of the local market.
25. What did Kenneth Lo do to promote Chinese food?
A. He wrote many books on Chinese cooking.
B. He worked in a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown.
C. He commented on popular books on Chinese food.
D. He travelled across China to learn Chinese cooking.
26. Why are Chop Suey and fortune cookies mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To prove many ingredients were needed to make them.
B. To show they were the most popular Chinese dishes in London.
C. To show Chinese dishes were adapted to satisfy Westerners’ taste.
D. To prove the ingredients used in Western cuisine preparation were simple.
27. What is the Westerners’ attitude towards Chinese food nowadays?
A. Concerned. B. Regretful. C. Unclear. D. Receptive.

When SpaceX’s Starship exploded (爆炸) not long after launch last month, it was generally seen as a failure. But for SpaceX, and for science and technology in general, failure can be the key to success.
SpaceX founder Elon Musk was optimistic after his big new rocket suffered a “rapid unscheduled explosion.” He knows that the engineering data gathered from the short flight will help track down problems and improve the outcome the next time Starship launches.
This type of rapid innovation cycle has worked for SpaceX. The company’s first rocket was the Falcon 1. Its first three launches were failures, followed by two successes — a fairly low success rate. Then Falcon 9 became the workhorse rocket for a decade, with just two failures in 232 launches, for a phenomenal success rate of 99 percent.
The public perspective of science as a constant upward trajectory (轨迹) toward greater knowledge is wrong. Science is full of dead ends. Nearly everything that happens in the lab will never make it into print.
In science, any experiment that “fails” can be a success if it is well-designed. Astronomers and physicists celebrate new discoveries such as gravity waves. But much progress is made by painstaking observations that fail to discover anything. Null (零) results can rule out theories and guide the design of future experiments. The problem is that null results don’t make you famous.
Scientists polish their CVs and fill them with achievements. However, there’s a small but refreshing trend to shine a light on failure. In 2016, Princeton professor Johannes Haushofer put his “CV of Failures” online. It listed every exam he had failed, every job application he’d been rejected for, every project that had failed, and every paper that had been rejected for publication. To his surprise, it went viral (引起轰动的). Other scientists have now covered the walls of their offices with rejection letters, and that has gone viral as well. Failure is finally becoming a badge of honor (荣誉奖章).
28. Which of the following statements may Elon Musk agree to?
A. Science is lots of fun.
B. Science is different from art.
C. Success is built on frustration.
D. Success is not the key to happiness.
29. Which can best describe SpaceX’s Falcon 9?
A. It’s a hit-or-miss rocket. B. It’s a rarely used rocket.
C. It’s a high-performance rocket. D. It’s still an experimental rocket.
30. What does the author say about null results?
A. They serve a significant role.
B. They lead to unreliable theories.
C. They are valued by the general public.
D. They make some researchers infamous.
31. What trend is talked about in the last paragraph?
A. People are taking badges of honor lightly.
B. People are taking a positive attitude to failure.
C. People are making every effort to polish their CVs.
D. People are hesitant to show their achievements.

Nearly 10 million people worldwide live with Parkinson’s disease. While Parkinson’s is incurable, some of its worst symptoms can be relieved and controlled using medications. A major problem of getting effective treatment at the right time is identifying the disease soon enough, before patients experience the symptoms brought on by irreversible(不可逆转的)neuron loss.
But scientists might have just the thing to change the situation. And it involves a nose. In a study published in the journal ACS Omega, researchers from China’s Zhejiang University created an “e-nose, ”a portable device that can detect body smells specific to Parkinson’s patients.
It may come as a surprise to learn Parkinson’s patients have their own smells. But after a retired nurse in Scotland made headlines in 2015 for a heightened sense of smell that led to her own husband’s Parkinson’s diagnosis, scientists have been trying hard to create a device that could smell the disease before physical symptoms start to show.
Over the years, scientists have found people with Parkinson’s tend to produce more sebum (皮脂)than the average person. This sebum mixes with other overproduced substances to produce certain, unique smells.
To track down these smells, the Zhejiang University researchers swabbed(用拭子擦拭)the upper backs of 31 Parkinson’s patients and 32 healthy volunteers. Using machine-learning software, they were able to identify three smell compounds that healthy volunteers lacked. The researchers then tested the e-nose on sebum taken from 12 Parkinson’s patients and 12 healthy people. The device was found to be about 71 percent accurate in distinguishing healthy sebum from Parkinson’s sebum.
These are encouraging findings, but before the e-nose is ready for clinical use, the team needs to test it on many more people to improve the accuracy of the models. They will also need to test whether factors like race affect the e-nose’s performance in any way. But for now, as the number of people living with Parkinson’s in the U. S. is expected to rise to 1.2 million by 2030, a nose might be the best option to detect this disease.
32. What makes it difficult for Parkinson’s patients to get effective treatment?
A. Its medications are in short supply.
B. It involves irreversible neuron loss.
C. Its early signs are not easy to notice.
D. It’s not a curable disease medically.
33. What did the Scottish nurse find?
A. Her husband’s body gave off a strange smell.
B. Her husband had a heightened sense of smell.
C. A smell caused her husband to suffer from a disease.
D. A smell could relieve her husband’s Parkinson’s symptoms.
34. What will the researchers do concerning their invention?
A. Put it into clinical use.
B. Conduct a broader test.
C. Create more lab models.
D. Expand its market outside the U. S.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. This e-nose can smell Parkinson’s
B. Parkinson’s patients produce more sebum
C. People living with Parkinson’s are on the rise
D. Researchers have found treatment for Parkinson’s

Getting work done, meeting deadlines (最后期限), and being productive 100% of the time is difficult for everyone. ____36____ Luckily, there are several ways you can improve your time management skills.
Create a daily schedule to organize tasks. Use a calendar or a piece of paper for scheduling. Map out exactly how you want to use your time each day, leaving nothing out of your schedule. Include how much time you would like to spend on each task. You may not follow your schedule exactly, as life can sometimes surprise you with how long a task will take. ____37____
Minimize (使减少到最低) distractions and interruptions. Give each task your full attention. Turn off any distractions such as email, phone, and social media notifications (通知). ____38____ Set aside time when you don’t address any interruptions unless it’s absolutely necessary.
____39____ It’s hard to get things done when you’re doing too many things at once. As you cross things off your to-do list, keep your mind focused on the task at hand. Shut out thoughts about your other responsibilities, and avoid going back and forth between unrelated duties. Switching back and forth between tasks is more work for your brain and slows down the process.
You can’t work or be productive 24 hours a day. ____40____ A break allows you to recharge and come back to a task with a fresh perspective. Try to do something during your break that is completely unrelated to your task, like drawing a picture, strumming (拨弄) a guitar, or playing a game of chess on your phone!

Math had never been something I was good at since middle school. Classes became harder in high school, and I was even further from a math teacher’s dream student. So at the start of my freshman year, I had a dislike to math. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to do well, but simply that I didn’t think I was able to do well. “I can’t” became my state of mind in all things related to math.
However, I was soon to learn that “I can’t” was not a choice in Mr. A’s class.
Mr. A always greeted us with open arms as he said, “Welcome! Smile! It’s a great day to be alive!” It was clear that Mr. A had a true passion not only for math but for teaching. If Mr. A ever experienced bad days in life, he never showed it. Mr. A greeted us with that same smile every day. He encouraged each student, from the top achiever to the “I can’t” student.
I found myself looking forward to math class. Being in Mr. A’s presence made me feel good, as if I had the chance to succeed, although I still hated the subject itself. From then on, I had spent countless hours studying, but with so many difficulties to cover, I was overwhelmed. The pressure of the subject was weighing heavily on my shoulders. I had always been a hardworking and dedicated student, but the stress seemed unbearable. No matter how much effort I put into math, I couldn’t seem to keep up. As the mid-term exams approached, I felt a sense of dread. The fear of failure consumed me, and I began to doubt myself again.
One day after school, I found myself walking alongside Mr. A on the empty playground. He could tell that something was bothering me, and he asked if everything was alright. I hesitated for a moment, unsure of whether to share my struggles.

C. It is multi-centered.
20. Who is the speaker probably talking to?
A. Scientists. B. Students. C. News reporters.
【答案】17. C 18. A 19. A 20. B
【解析】
【原文】 Today, I want to talk about the nearest single star to our Sun. Barnard’s Star is about six light-years away from Earth. Believed to be between seven and twelve billion years of age, Barnard’s Star is much older than the Sun, which has been around for four and a half billion years. It’s also a lot cooler and smaller. In fact, Barnard’s Star is only 19 percent of the Sun’s mass.
As it isn’t very bright, it isn’t easy for scientists to see Barnard’s Star. There have been many theories about planets over the years, but nothing has been proven. A scientific team in South Africa reported evidence of a planet circling around Barnard’s Star. Another team confirmed this using the latest technology.
Why is this important? I wanted to show you that our knowledge of the universe is only so much! We are discovering more and more every day! With that in mind, please turn to page 20 in your textbook.

A. Concerned. B. Regretful. C. Unclear. D. Receptive.
【答案】24. B 25. A 26. C 27. D
【解析】

【答案】28. C 29. C 30. A 31. B

【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Then Falcon 9 became the workhorse rocket for a decade, with just two failures in 232 launches, for a phenomenal success rate of 99 percent.(随后,猎鹰9号成为十年间的主力火箭,在232次发射中仅出现两次失败,成功率达到惊人的99%)”可知,猎鹰9号作为主力火箭服役十年,232次发射仅2次失败,成功率高达99%,属于高性能火箭。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“Null (零) results can rule out theories and guide the design of future experiments.(零结果可以排除某些理论,并指导未来实验的设计)”可知,零结果可以排除错误理论、指导后续实验设计,说明它们发挥着重要作用。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“However, there’s a small but refreshing trend to shine a light on failure. Failure is finally becoming a badge of honor

D. Researchers have found treatment for Parkinson’s
【答案】32. C 33. A 34. B 35. A
根据文章第一段“A major problem of getting effective treatment at the right time is identifying the disease soon enough, before patients experience the symptoms brought on by irreversible(不可逆转的)neuron loss.(在正确的时间获得有效治疗的一个主要问题是,在患者经历不可逆的神经元损失带来的症状之前,尽快确定疾病。)”可知只有尽快确定疾病,帕金森患者才能在正确的时间里得到有效的救治,所以可以推断出早期症状的难以发现使帕金森患者得到有效救治变得困难。故选C项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“But after a retired nurse in Scotland made headlines in 2015 for a heightened sense of smell that led to her own husband’s Parkinson’s diagnosis(但2015年,苏格兰一名退休护士因为她敏锐的嗅觉帮助其丈夫被诊断出帕金森病而上了头条。)”可知这名苏格兰退休护士发现她丈夫的身体发出一种特殊的气味。故选A项。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“These are encouraging findings, but before the e-nose is ready for clinical use, the team needs to test it on many more people to improve the accuracy of the models. They will also need to test whether factors like race affect the e-nose’s performance in any way.(这些都是令人鼓舞的发现,但在电子鼻投入临床使用之前,研究小组还需要在更多的人身上进行测试,以提高模型的准确性。他们还需要测试种族等因素是否会以任何方式影响电子鼻的性能。)”可知为了提高模型的准确性,在电子鼻投入临床使用之前,研究小组还需要进行更广泛的测试。故选B项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。文章第一段主要讲的是电子鼻出现的背景——帕金森病人在得到正确救治之前很难发现其症状,第二、三、四和五段主要围绕着电子鼻的研发,测试及功效展开,最后一段“These are encouraging findings, but before the e-nose is ready for clinical use, the team needs to test it on many more people to improve the accuracy of the models. They will also need to test whether factors like race affect the e-nose’s performance in any way. But for now, as the number of people living with Parkinson’s in the U. S. is expected to rise to 1. 2 million by 2030, a nose might be the best option to detect this disease.(这些都是令人鼓舞的发现,但在电子鼻投入临床使用之前,研究小组还需要在更多的人身上进行测试,以提高模型的准确性。他们还需要测试种族等因素是否会以任何方式影响电子鼻的性能。但目前,美国帕金森患者的数量预计将上升到120万。到2030年,电子鼻可能是检测这种疾病的最佳选择。)”向我们展示了电子鼻的使用前景,对全文进行总结。纵观全文,文章都是在围绕着一种能够测出帕金森患者身上特有气味的电子鼻展开,所以A项This e-nose can smell Parkinson’s作为文章的标题最为合适。故选A项。

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Paragraph 2: Something different seemed to have shifted in my study and life.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】But there was something in his kind eyes that made me open up. I poured out my frustrations, explaining how hard I had been working and how little progress I was making. Tears welled up in my eyes as I admitted that I was afraid of failing the exams. To my surprise, Mr. A didn’t offer words of sympathy or pity. Instead, he shared his own experiences as a high school student and the challenges he faced during his final year. He told me about the countless nights he had spent studying, the moments of self-doubt, and the overwhelming pressure.
Paragraph 2:
Something different seemed to have shifted in my study and life. Instead of letting the stress consume me, I started looking for ways to manage the study pressure more effectively. The day of the exam came. I answered the questions as best as I could. Finally, the exam ended, and I walked out of the classroom, with a sense of relief. Next week, I anxiously scanned the paper for my score. My eyes widened in disbelief, I had received an A! I could hardly contain my excitement so I happily ran to Mr. A’s office to tell him the good news. I saw Mr. Johnson wearing a smile with thumbs up. The golden sunlight poured into the office, like Mr. A lighting up my life as well as the path to pursue my dream.
