Being a student at Cambridge University gives you a great many opportunities to take part in its traditional activities. Rowing is among the most popular. In my first term as a student, I decided to give this sport a go and joined my college boat club.
One of the first things I learned was that rowing training comes in two parts: land training and water training. Land training on erg machines helped me get used to the basics of correct movement, techniques and rhythm. Since rowing is very much a team sport, all eight rowers in the boat must move together as one in order to deliver an efficient and powerful stroke.
Water training allowed me to apply all the techniques to the context of a boat on water. There were certainly more challenges on water than on land because it was hard for us to keep our boat balanced. The first few lessons out on the water were sometimes difficult but gradually helped us improve our confidence and trust in each other.
Halfway through the term I also decided to give coxing a go. I was not aware of the important role a coxswain (舵手) played in rowing before I became one myself. Having to do many things at the same time was certainly a challenge. Controlling a boat is not always easy, especially around tight corners of the river. Making the right decisions about what my rowers should do sometimes felt like a lot of responsibility. The complex aspects of this role felt like a great opportunity for me to develop some key decision-making skills which I didn’t expect before joining a boat club.
By the end of the first term at university, my team had competed in two races, Clare Novice Regatta and the Fairbairns’ Cup. I was initially really nervous before these races, but bit by bit they became very exciting.
Looking back on this term of rowing and coxing, it has been a wonderful experience full of little surprises along the way. Rowing really helped me connect better with my own body.

A.To develop teamwork skills. B.To take part in a famous race.
C.To try a popular traditional sport. D.To make many like-minded friends.

3.Which one is true about water training according to the passage?
A.It helps the writer practise skills on the machines.
B.It is more challenging than land training.
C.It makes the team lose trust in each other.
D.It requires no teamwork.
4.We can know that ________.
A.A coxswain has to do many different jobs at the same time.
B.Being a coxswain is hard, but it has few duties.
C.It is easy for a coxswain to drive the boat through narrow bends.
D.Being a coxswain allows people to avoid making decisions.
5.Which of the following best describes the author?

Winning awards is always exciting, but can you imagine students winning big prizes just for showing up at school? A school in Manchester, UK, offers students rewards including bikes and £100 gift vouchers for their perfect attendance records. The school runs a so-called “rewards shop”, where students can use the credit points they earn to buy raffle tickets (抽奖券) and compete for those big prizes. Do you think that is a wise move?
Yes — it makes school a lot more attractiveGiving pupils prizes for good attendance makes them feel that their efforts are valued. This practice can not only encourage students to go to school regularly, but also help them build a positive attitude towards school life. Besides, when students win prizes, they can share them with their family, which in turn can help create a happier atmosphere at home. Winning a computer for your family or a pizza party for your class is exciting—after all, students couldn’t afford to buy them with pocket money. For many years, schools have used systems like reward points to encourage pupils. Giving prizes is just a creative way to acknowledge a pupil’s hard work and attendance.
No - learning matters more than prizesReceiving a good education has its own benefits—it changes your life for the better. You shouldn’t depend on the hope of winning prizes to make you attend. Worse still, this reward system may distract students from their studies. Some students may become more focused on prizes or envy (嫉妒) their classmates’ rewards than on lessons. Putting in the effort just for the chance to win something might drive students to attend school, but it doesn’t prepare them for the adult world where people are expected to act responsibly. What’s more, offering gifts for good attendance could lead some pupils to go to school even when they’re sick, when they should stay at home and rest.
As a matter of fact, over the past two years, some schools that reward pupils have seen their absence (缺席) rates fall. While rewards can improve attendance, true learning should be the main goal. A good balance is the key.
1.What can students in the UK school use to get raffle tickets for big prizes?
A.Pocket money from their family. B.Credit points they earn at school.
C.Good exam results in all subjects. D.Letters of praise from teachers.
2.Which of the following is NOT a reward mentioned in the passage?
A.A bicycle. B.A £100 gift voucher. C.A pizza party for the class. D.A summer camp trip.
3.The underlined word “acknowledge” in the passage probably means ________.
A.highlight B.respect C.recognize D.review
4.According to the passage, what is one possible problem of giving gifts for good attendance?
A.Students may spend too much money buying gifts for their classmates.
B.Some sick students may still come to school instead of resting at home.
C.Teachers will have less time to prepare lessons for students.
D.Parents will stop caring about their children’s school attendance.
5.According to the passage, what result did some schools get after using reward systems for pupils in the past two years?
A.Their absence rates dropped. B.Students got better grades in all subjects.
C.Students no longer envied their classmates. D.Fewer students were sick at school.
6.What is the main focus of the passage?
A.To compare different reward systems in UK schools.
B.To discuss whether schools should give prizes for good attendance.
C.To explain how “rewards shops” work in Manchester.
D.To argue that going to school has its own benefits.
7.Based on the passage, which of the following would the author most probably agree with?
A.Rewarding attendance with expensive prizes is harmful to students’ motivation.
B.Schools should focus only on learning achievements rather than on attendance rates.
C.Though rewards may improve attendance, they should not take away the true value of going to school.
D.Giving small prizes is acceptable, but large prizes like bikes are improper and should be stopped.

Team Discussion
The team did not choose the same plan for all three students. Anna needs more independence, but completely stopping parents’ questions may not help. The team suggests Plan A because it turns arguments into clear requests. Ben needs to understand that changing friendships do not always mean rejection. Plan B may help if the teacher reminds him not to overthink every small change. Clara needs safe speaking practice, so Plan C is better than forcing her to speak in front of the whole class immediately.
The teacher says a good support plan should match the real reason behind the behaviour. Arguing, silence and avoidance are not always the main problems. They may be signs of deeper changes: wanting respect, fearing loss or lacking confidence.
1.What is Anna’s current problem?
A.She avoids class speaking. B.She argues about homework.
C.She loses old friendship. D.She overthinks body changes.

5.What does the teacher value most in a support plan?
A.Matching the real reason. B.Using the same action.
C.Avoiding all discussion. D.Solving everything fast.
6.What does the passage mainly show?

Our concerns
Our suggestions
1 Tom: I feel shy when meeting new people. During breaks, I often stay by myself, even though I really wish I could join others. I just don’t know how to start a conversation.
2 Mia: Sometimes I speak too quickly without thinking and end up hurting others’ feelings. I always regret it later but find it really hard to say sorry properly.
3 Alex: I’ve been getting more pimples recently, and it really bothers me. I feel like everyone is staring at my face, and I’ve even started avoiding photos and social gatherings because of it.
4 Daniel: Whenever I have a big test, I get so nervous that my mind goes blank or my heart races. I know the material when I study, but during the exam, I just panic and forget everything.
5 Emma: My teacher seems very serious and busy all the time. I’m worried that if I ask for help, I might bother him. So, I usually stay quiet even when I don’t understand something in class.
6 Leo: I find it hard to make new friends at school. I usually stay alone after class and don’t know where to meet people who share the same hobbies as me. I really want to find someone I can talk and study with.
A.Before you speak, try taking a moment to think. If you do hurt someone, a sincere and specific apology like “I’m sorry I…” or “that was thoughtless of me” can make a big difference.
B.Teachers are usually happy to help students who show they want to learn. Try asking your question after class, starting with, “Could I please ask for a quick explanation of...?” This shows you value their time.
C. Joining a study group or a club is a great way to make friends and learn from others. You are likely to find students with common interests there.
D.Start small. You don’t need a long conversation. Just a “hello,” or a simple question like “Did you enjoy today’s activity?” can be a great first step.
E. Skin issues are very common during teenage years. Instead of avoiding social situations, try following a healthy skin care routine and remind yourself that people focus far less on your skin than on who you are.
F. Practise deep breathing exercises before the test to calm your nerves. Also, keep in mind that it’s okay to skip a question and come back to it later.

Winning awards is always exciting, but can you imagine students winning big prizes just for showing up at school? A school in Manchester, UK, offers students rewards including bikes, £100 gift vouchers for their perfect attendance records. The school runs a so-called “rewards shop”, where students can use the credit points they earn to buy raffle tickets and compete for those big prizes. Do you think that is a wise move?Yes—it makes school a lot more appealing
Giving pupils prizes for good attendance makes them feel that their efforts are valued. This practice can not only motivate students to go to school regularly, but also help them build a positive attitude towards school life.

C.Avoiding all discussion. D.Solving everything fast.
6.What does the passage mainly show?
A.Teenage changes need suitable support. B.Parents should stop checking homework.
C.Friendship changes are always bad. D.Class speaking should be avoided.

根据“There were many people”,可知人多说明餐厅很“忙”。
根据“Thank you very much!”,可知他对顾客的善意感到意外。
根据“like ‘please’ and ‘thank you’”,可知这些是礼貌用语。
remember to do表示“记得去做某事”。
be like表示“像……一样”。during, about, around无法构成比喻关系。

结合后文“calling every hotel she could think of”的内容,说明他们正在寻找hotels“酒店”。
结合上下文,女士主动帮他们联系酒店,make it her task to help us表示把帮助我们当作自己的任务,task“任务”符合语境。

waiting for“等待”、asking for“索要”、preparing for“为……
