The bus screamed to a stop in Nazareth, Israel. Five Australian backpackers boarded and struck up a conversation with me. They asked typical travelersˈ questions — where was I going and why was I traveling alone? My plan was to travel with a friend of mine, I explained, but when I called her that morning, she didnˈt pick up and I had no other way to reach her. My stomach was in knots, but I decided to head out anyway, thinking I might run into her if I traveled to Tiberias, where we had planned to go together.
“Why donˈt you travel with us?” one of the backpackers offered. They were experienced adventurers who would work for a few months, save, then travel for as long as they could. Their current plan was to explore the Middle East and Europe in three months while working in London.
It seemed risky to travel with strangers, but my instinct said yes. For the next two weeks, I explored Israel with the backpackers and learned to trust my instinct in all types of new and interesting situations. When they hitched a ride, I took the bus, but when they wanted to steal into the King David Hotelˈs swimming pool, I led the way. The world opened up to me because I chose to travel alone. I joined complete strangers, who became close friends with me. Years later, one couple from the backpacking group even flew from Sydney to Phoenix to be in my wedding. The trip was such a special experience that it gave me confidence in all areas of my life. Since then, Iˈve backpacked alone across South Africa, sky-dived from 12,000 feet in New Zealand and even moved across the US with no job lined up.
On my third day wandering in Israel with my new friends, I bumped into the woman I was supposed to meet. Though I was happy she was all right, I was grateful she hadnˈt picked up the phone.

A. She would get along with the backpackers.
B. It might cause trouble to have a swim.
C. She ought to stay away from the backpackers.
D. It could add excitement to get a free ride.
27.What can be inferred from the passage?()

A mountainous river valley in China’s Hubei Province is home to one of the Asian countries’ most impressive pieces of infrastructure — a highway bridge that runs through the middle of a river.
Finalized in 2015, China’s “river highway” is widely regarded as an infrastructural wonder. Designed to link the town of Gufuzhen in Xingshan county to the main highway running between Shanghai and Chengdu in southwestern China, this unique suspended highway doesn’t make much sense at first glance. Why have a massive bridge built in the middle of the Xiangxi River, when you could just have it run alongside the river on land? In fact, there was already a road running along the river, which meant it could obviously be done, so why not build the highway that way? Well, apparently, Chinese engineers decided that a suspended highway running along the middle of the river was not only cheaper to build, but more efficient.
It turns out that building a highway through a complex mountainous landscape like Hubei’s Xiangxi River Valley is harder than it sounds. It involves digging miles of tunnels through rock, relocating people living by the edge of the river, and affecting the local plants and animals. After doing the maths, a team of engineers showed that building a highway bridge over the river was both cheaper and faster than building the highway on land.
Obviously, building a 4.4-kilometre suspended road that follows the curves of the Xiangxi River wasn’t exactly a cheap undertaking, but it was better than the alternative. The 440 million yuan($71 million) spent on this unique river highway was apparently several times less than what a land highway in this valley would have cost. Plus, it has shortened the time it takes to drive from Gufuzhen to the main highway from over an hour to just 20 minutes.
Since its inauguration (落成仪式) in 2015, China’s river highway has become somewhat of a tourist attraction, with millions travelling to Hubei to experience driving through the middle of a river while taking in the breathtaking sights.
28.What difficulties might people meet if the highway is built on land?()
A. They lack money to build it.
B. They don’t have enough time.
C. It might influence the local ecosystem.
D. There are so many mountains people can’t pass through.
29.What advantage does the suspended road have?()
A. It is more efficient than a land highway.
B. It helps relocate people living beside the river.
C. It is much safer than any other road.
D. It costs people nothing to drive on.
30.How does the author develop paragraph 4?()
A. By listing numbers. B. By giving examples.

A. To advertise China’s river highway to foreigners.
B. To introduce the river highway in Hubei properly.

D. To express the affection for the river highway.

Noah Strycker once made a bet with passengers on a cruise ship(游轮): If any of them spotted him without binoculars at any point during a 14-day trip, he would buy them all drinks. Even with that reward, no one won a free drink, in large part because Stryckerˈs passion for birds means his binoculars are never out of armˈs reach.
A masterˈs student in Heather Lynchˈs lab at Stony Brook University, Strycker, who has turned his world travels in search of birds into books, is working through the second year on Lynchˈs specialty: penguins.
As a part of the team, Strycker is contributing to a population analysis of chinstrap penguins. Last year, he braved Antarctica with a field team for several months to count communities of these six-to ten-pound birds. The “pièce de résistance” of that journey was a trip to Elephant Island, which is where, over 100 years earlier, Ernest Shackleton and his crew were trapped for several months before their rescue.
During Stryckerˈs journey to the famous but untouched island, the team counted the number of chinstraps and compared the population to the last known count, which occurred 50 years ago. They determined that the chinstrap has experienced a significant decline. After a survey of Elephant Island and Low Island, the research team suggested that the decline in the chinstrapˈs main source of food likely caused this reduction.
Strycker landed in the world of penguins when he was working as a naturalist guide on a cruise ship and met Lynch, whose team was on the same boat. Lynch was excited about the chance to add someone like Strycker with so much Antarctic experience to her team. “Strycker is a great writer and his skill in writing helped us get our research out for review faster than would normally have been possible,” she said.
Once he earns his degree, Strycker plans to build on and share his experiences. He would like to write books, give presentations, and “generally inspire the world about birds”.
32.What did Stryckerˈs bet show?()
A. His reliance on binoculars.
B. His enthusiasm for birdwatching.
C. His desire to have a drink with the passengers.
D. His willingness to reward passengers for spotting birds.
33.Why did Strycker go to Antarctica last year?()
A. To write a travel book.
B. To rescue a trapped field team.
C. To conduct scientific research.
D. To film a unique species of penguins.
34.What did Strycker find on Elephant Island?()
A. The main source of food for penguins.
B. A population decrease in chinstrap penguins.
C. The last known count of chinstrap penguins.
D. An innovative approach to counting penguins.
35.How did Strycker help Lynch?()
A. By reviewing her report.
B. By guiding a cruise trip.
C. By providing financial support.
D. By assisting with research publication.

Prepare your children in advance.
Preparing children for what theyˈre about to experience can go a long way. For example, tell them in advance about jet lag (时差综合征), or if theyˈre nervous about traveling, bring a special toy on the plane. (40) Thatˈs because children tend to be more adaptable than we are in new situations.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily.
She couldn't help crying sadly when she thought of the scolding(指责) from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, "Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?"
"Oh, yes…, but I don't have money on me." she replied.
"That's nothing. I'll treat you today," said the man, "come in." The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
"What is it?" asked the man kindly.
"Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness! "said Jenny as she dried her tears, "Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so cruel compared to a stranger! "
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, "Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your thanks to her?"
Jenny sat there, speechless; she remembered mother's familiar face and weathered hands. "Why didn't I think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel thankful, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me."
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head and saw the familiar face of her mother. "Here you come! I've been looking for you," she said, tired and relieved. Jenny couldn't help throwing herself into her mother's arms. "Mum, I'm so sorry and thank you for all you have done for me." She expressed her sincere apology and great gratitude. Hearing this, her mother smiled patting her back gently.
