Imagine this. There’s an apple and a piece of cake on a table. Which one would you like? The delicious cake or the healthy apple? A bestseller, Willpower: Rediscovering the Greatest Human Strength, suggests that willpower (意志力) is the ability to make decisions that are better for us in the long term.
Here is a famous experiment in the book: the Marshmallow (棉花糖) Test. From 1968 to 1970, Professor Walter Mischel tested the willpower of 600 children aged four to six. In the experiment, each child was left alone in a room for fifteen minutes with a marshmallow on a table in front of them. They were given two choices: they could either eat it or, if they waited fifteen minutes, they’d be given a second one (and then they could eat both).
So, what did the kids do? Well, as you can imagine, 70% ate the first marshmallow within the fifteen minutes. But the other 30% showed willpower — they controlled themselves and waited for the second marshmallow. But then Mischel discovered something really interesting. Twenty years later, he got in touch with the children, who, by then, were in their early twenties. And he found that those who had strong willpower were getting better marks at university and were more popular.
Willpower is like a muscle (肌肉), and the more you exercise it, the stronger it gets. So, if you do daily “self-control exercises”, such as making your bed or brushing your teeth, you’ll improve your overall willpower. And daily willpower exercises will help you with those bigger goals, such as studying for an exam or training for a marathon.
Be careful though. Just like any muscle, your “willpower muscle” can get tired. If you’ve had to do lots of things that require willpower, take a break or give yourself a treat. That way, you’ll build up your willpower again.
And one last thing, the writer mentions people who learn foreign languages usually have a lot of willpower. So, congratulations!
49. What were the children asked to do in the experiment?
A. To eat it right away
B. To wait for fifteen minutes
C. To share it with others
D. To choose one now or wait for two
50. What did Mischel find about the children twenty years later?
A. The waiters achieved all their goals
B. The test helped children finish university
C. Better marks made students more popular
D. Early self-control may predict later success
51. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Most children have strong willpower
B. Willpower benefits us and can be built up
C. The experiment trained their young muscles
D. Language learners should rest their tired muscles
C
If you have ever had to struggle through a lesson after spending half the night on homework, fighting to keep your eyes open, you are not alone. A recent survey of teenagers shows that over 60% get less than eight hours’ sleep on school nights, and nearly 15% sleep fewer than six hours.
What makes sleep so important is that, while you are asleep, your brain is still quietly at work: it sorts through what you have learned during the day and stores it in lasting memory. In one study, students with eight hours’ sleep did much better in a memory test than those who stayed up all night to review. Getting enough sleep also helps you stay focused in class, think faster and keep a good mood. Students who sleep poorly often feel tired or angry more easily, and some even fall asleep at their desks.
If heavy schoolwork is one reason so many teenagers go to bed late, the habits formed around bedtime are very often another. It has become common to lie in bed with a phone, moving from one short video to the next message long after the lights are off. The blue light from screens tells the brain that it is still daytime, so it is harder to fall asleep. Tea, coffee and cola, drunk late in the day, can leave the mind too awake to rest even around midnight.
The encouraging part is that a few small changes are often enough. Doctors have some simple advice. Try to go to bed and get up at about the same time every day, even on weekends. Keep your phone out of the bedroom, or do something relaxing before sleep, such as reading a paper book. When homework truly cannot be completed, an honest talk with the teacher is wiser than staying up late to get it done. A brain that has rested well simply learns faster; sleep, looked at in the right way, is not time lost but time quietly put to work.
52. How many students in the survey get less than six hours’ sleep?
A. 15% B. About 60% C. Over 80 percent D. Nearly 100 percent
53. What does the brain do while we are sleeping?
A. It rests completely at night
B. It organizes learning into memory
C. It gives off special blue light
D. It keeps the tired mind wide awake
54. A student who stays up late going over a lesson again and again may ____.
A. remember it for a longer time
B. develop a stronger memory slowly
C. remember less than a rested student
D. become more focused in the morning
55. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Why does Sleep Matter So Much?
B. Why do Teenagers Stay Up So Late?
C. How can Students Change Bad Habits?
D. What does The Study’s Memory Test Show?
D
One morning, the little prince came to a garden full of roses, where he met a fox. The fox looked at him with bright eyes and did not run away.
“Good morning,” said the fox politely.
“Who are you?” asked the little prince. “You are so lovely to look at.”
“I am a fox,” it said.
“Come and play with me,” the little prince begged. “I am so unhappy.” “I cannot play with you,” the fox answered. “I am not tamed (驯服).”
“What does ‘tamed’ mean?”
“It is something too often forgotten,” said the fox. “It means to build a relationship. To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy, just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. You, on your part, have no need of me. To you, I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique (独一无二的) in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world...”
“I begin to understand,” said the little prince. “There is a flower... I think she has tamed me...”
“My life is rather dull,” the fox went on. “I run after chickens, and men run after me. All chickens are just alike, and all men are just alike. But if you tame me, it will be as if the sun came to shine on my life. I shall know the sound of your footsteps, which will be different from all the others. Other steps make me hurry back underground, but yours will call me like music out of my burrow (地洞).”
The little prince did tame the fox. When the hour came for him to leave, the fox grew very quiet, and a tear shone in its soft eyes.
“Ah,” said the little prince, “I shall want to cry.”
“My secret is very simple,” said the fox. “It is with the heart that one can see rightly; what is valuable cannot be seen with the eyes alone.”
“What is valuable cannot be seen with the eyes alone,” the little prince repeated slowly, so that he would remember it.
“It is the time you have spent on your rose that makes her so important.”

Look! Growing up is often seen as a journey with different stages. As we pass through each one, the meaning of “making it” changes. Here’s a look at each stage and the surprising lessons they teach us, and the new skills each stage requires.
Primary School: “Almost Done”
In primary school, life is simple. With praise from teachers and small achievements, children are often led to believe that they have almost mastered what they need for the future. “Almost done” perfectly shows this sense, since each year they achieve something new, like learning to spell or completing a book.
Children may feel great at this stage, but it’s only the start of their journey, preparing them for future challenges and learning.
High School: “Very Close”
High school brings a new level of responsibility and choice. Students face more important tests, begin thinking about careers, and learn to be on their own. At this stage, many believe they’re “very close” to being adults.
In fact, high school is for trying new things, not being perfect at them. Students are introduced to many sides of life, and experience from real life teaches them something fresh, yet they still have much to learn.
University: “Yes!”
University or college is a great achievement, and completing a degree (学位) often feels like climbing to the top. With specialized knowledge and skills, many students believe they’re fully prepared to face the world.
The “Yes!” moment of graduation (毕业) soon gives way to the fact that a degree is just one part of the bigger picture in building a wonderful career and life.
Life: “Why?”
Young people often won’t feel the challenges of life hard to deal with until they enter the “real world”. Grown-up life doesn’t come with a guidebook. Responsibilities like managing your money, keeping friendships, balancing work and life and staying well require skills not fully taught in school.
This stage teaches us that life is about never stopping learning. To do it well, we must be ready to adjust (调整) our courses, understand our own hearts, and know when to change directions.
The truth about growing up is that each stage brings new lessons and challenges, from the ABCs and 123s to the discovery that achievement is a lifelong journey. Begin this journey with an open mind, enjoy the ride, and be ready to learn from everything that happens.
What growing up really means to us
Growing up isn’t a straight path to achievement. Each stage of life brings new challenges and 76.______ skills.
Different stages
Primary School
Children often come to believe they have 77.______ themselves for the future, but that is far from the full picture.
High School
Students are given more responsibility and choice as they face exams and think about careers. They are introduced to many sides of life and can get much 78.______, although they still have much to learn.
University
When they 79.______ their degree, many students feel as if they have reached the top. However, they soon realize that a degree alone is no 80.______ of a wonderful career and life.
Life
It is natural to feel unprepared for real-life challenges, and this reminds you to be a lifelong 81.______, open to whatever life may bring.
There is no end to growing up. Stay open to what is to come and find 82.______ in the journey, knowing there will always be more to learn and discover.
Which of the four stages do you think is the most important? Why? 83 (Answer in at least 20 words.)
