Great changes have taken place around me. A narrow dirt road in front of my house has become a wide highway, and my grandparents now pay for everything with epayment.
As for my studies, I used to read my notes again and again and still forgot everything. Now I turn each new word into a picture, and I retell the story of my day in English before I sleep. Step by step, my listening and speaking have improved, and I am no longer afraid of speaking in class.
Small efforts every day can change a person, just as small changes can change a town. Let's start today.

五、阅读理解(共2篇,15小题,每小题1分,满分15分)
阅读下列短文,从每小题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出一个最佳选项。
A
Our junior middle school opened a Learning Lab last term. Any learner who is tired of copying notes can walk in after class and try a different method. I went there in September, when my grammar was weak and my pronunciation was worse. Ms Lin, who runs the Lab, learned English from the radio herself, so she is patient with slow learners. On the wall hangs a photo of a former student who once ran at the Olympics. In one corner sat Rick, Johnny and Bob, three boys who came every Tuesday only to play with the old models on the shelf.
The first person I met was Frank. He was preparing for a physics experiment and covered one wall with flashcards: a word on one side, a picture on the other. "I tick the cards I can use in a sentence," he said. "Three days without a mistake, and the card goes into the box for next month." He added that this method suits people with a short-term memory, because it makes them meet the same word again and again and turns review into a stable habit.
Cathy, an exchange student from Britain, sat by the window with her earphones on. She spent two years in Mombasa before she came to us, and her Kenyan classmates taught her to sing Chinese songs. She is preparing for HSK, the Chinese test for foreign learners, and she was listening to a podcast about the history of Beijing. She paused the audio, repeated the dialogue aloud, and clicked on the new words to check them in her e-book dictionary. "Zero grammar rules on the bus," she laughed. "Just listening. It is enjoyable, and the speed of my reading has gone up too."
Terry had a different problem. He could summarize a whole passage but could not remember the details. His notebook was full of graphs, arrows and strange pictures. "I turn a list into a story of images," he explained. "A squirrel with a nut drives an engine into the mall, and the password is written on its tail." It looked silly, but in general it worked: after two weeks he could retell a lecture without looking at his notes.
Every Friday Ms Lin gives each of us feedback on our work, and then we sit in a circle to discuss what worked. In part, the Lab works because nobody here is afraid of making mistakes, and Ms Lin suggests a different plan for each of us. "There is no one-size-fits-all strategy," she says. "Take advantage of the resource that fits your brain and use your time efficiently. A method you can keep is better than a plan you cannot follow." She also asks us to view every mistake as a chance to grow. "A growth mindset is not just a nice sentence," she says. "It is a habit you build up step by step. Learners who test themselves are more likely to remember, and sleep is the best fuel for the brain. So do not just finish your schoolwork and close your textbook. Read actively, and let your curiosity lead you."

When Zhou Hang was nine, he asked his science teacher a question that nobody in the village could answer: "How far away is the moon?" Mr Gu did not laugh at him. He lent the boy a book about the universe and said, "A question is the beginning of a discovery."
Zhou's family were farmers. In those years many children in the village dropped out of school after Grade Six, because there was no money for books. A disease took two of his classmates that winter, and the nearest doctor was forty kilometres away. Zhou's mother refused to let school slip away from her son. She sold two bags of corn to buy him a calendar and a second-hand radio, and every evening he listened to the science programme on it. One afternoon, while cleaning the room, the boy came across a photo of the moon in an old magazine, and he kept it in his pocket for years.
There was no telescope, so he borrowed a broken one from the school and repaired it himself in the shed behind the house; the woodwork took him a whole month, and he had to cover a hole in the roof with an old piece of metal. For two years he drew what he saw at night. Some villagers thought he was wasting his time: "Look at the sky every night, and you will forget the corn." His mother kept his drawings on the wall of their flat and never once asked him to stop.
In 2019 a national science competition changed his life. His project, "A Sky Map for Village Children", won a prize, and he was invited to a city museum. There he saw photos of the pyramids, a model of the Louvre, and a map of the Silk Road, which once ran through the Western Regions. "For the first time I understood how small we are," he said, "and how brave mankind has been."
Today Zhou teaches science in his old school. The Wall of Great Minds in his classroom is covered with names: Newton, the physicist who explained how an apple falls; Curie, the chemist who won two Nobel Prizes and worked for four years in a cold chemistry lab to find a new element; Faraday and Turing, whose ideas gave machines a kind of brain; Brunel, the British engineer; Pei, who designed the glass pyramid at the Louvre; Confucius the thinker and Hugo the writer; a historian who spent forty years on the dynasties of China; a biologist whose new seeds saved a whole nation from hunger; and Earhart, whose flight across the Atlantic took more courage than anyone could imagine. "They were not born famous," he tells his students. "They were curious, and they did not give up."
Below the names he has written three dates: 2560 BCE — that is, 2,560 years before the Common Era — when work began on the Great Pyramid; the Warring States Period, when Chinese thinkers argued about how to live; and 1903, when the first flight lasted twelve seconds. "A century is short," he says. "It is necessary to remember what people built in it."
Zhou does not talk much, but he has a firm belief: a scientific idea belongs to everyone. "Two hundred years ago a boy like me would never have touched a telescope," he says. "That is the change I want to bring about." His story has become an inspiring one in the town, and many students say that they look up to him. He laughs at that. "Do not admire me," he says. "Admire the people on the wall. They were pioneers in exploration, and none of them became great in a single night. Nothing stays forever, but an idea can, if somebody carries it forward."
Zhou is known in the town for his kindness to slow learners, and he has put his old drawings to good use: they now hang on the classroom wall and on the school website as a sky map for the whole school. "Courage is not only for soldiers who are wounded in battle," he says. "It is also for a boy who keeps asking questions when others laugh at him. Above all, pass your questions on. That is how wisdom spreads."
58 What did Mr Gu do when Zhou asked him the question?
A. He laughed at the boy. B. He lent the boy a book.
C. He answered it at once. D. He asked the boy to leave.
59 Why did many village children leave school after Grade Six?

60 What did Zhou's mother do with his drawings?
A. She sold them for money. B. She put them in a box.

六、句子还原(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,从方框内所给的 A、B、C、D、E、F、G 七个选项中选出五个能填入文中空白处的最佳选项,使短文意思通顺、结构完整。
My grandfather still remembers the village of 1985. The road to the town was a narrow dirt track, and in spring a sandstorm could cover the fields with dust. The soil was sandy, and it gave the farmers very little. (66)______ Most families lived on corn and hope. Under the old tree, whose roots went deep into the dry ground, the men talked about the weather and nothing else.
Change began with water. The government supported a project that brought water from the river to the farmland, and the first greenhouse appeared in 1998. "We lacked everything then," Grandpa says. (67)______ Today a high-tech greenhouse produces tomatoes all winter, a lorry carries fresh vegetables to the port every morning, and the government has built new housing for young families.
Then came the railway and the wide highway. It took the workers three years to complete a tunnel through the mountain, and the journey to the capital now takes two hours instead of a whole day. (68)______ The new road leads straight to the highway, and the address of every farm is now on a map on the internet. The number of visitors to the village has increased since the first small hotel opened, and young people have come back to start businesses. A manager from the city has opened a small factory that makes farm products.
The biggest change is in people's hands. Nearly everyone uses e-payment, and a digital account is as common as a key. Grandpa is a good example. (69)______ Now he books train tickets with ease and pays for vegetables with his phone.
Last month our class had a discussion about these changes. Some students said the village had lost its quiet beauty, and that a rough road had more attraction than a wide one. (70)______ Grandpa's comment on all this is short. "A good life is not the biggest house," he says. He is a socialist in the old sense: for him, socialism is not a word in a book but a village where nobody goes hungry. He believes that comfort should be shared, and that the most important aspect of any change is whether the poorest family also gains. As he often tells us, a man-made miracle is still a miracle, as long as we remember what the old bush and the old track taught us.
A. Today the same land feeds three villages.
B. In his case, a small screen has opened a big window.
C. Few people could read, and fewer still had a chance to leave.
D. Others argued that comfort is not the same as happiness.
E. But the rail link has made the whole country feel smaller.
F. Housing in the city is much more expensive than in the village.
G. The government should build more roads in the city centre.

七、阅读表达(共2小题,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答问题。第71题答案不超过10个词;第72题为开放性观点题,请结合实际简要作答。
Why do students forget so much of what they study? A study at a university in Shanghai may give part of the answer. Researchers asked two groups of students to memorize the same list of twenty words. The list was strange on purpose: an opera singer, a picnic basket, a gunshot, a squirrel, a dolphin, a wild flower, a nut, a shopping mall.
The first group studied for two hours in the afternoon and took a test that evening. The second group studied for one hour, slept for eight hours, and took the test the next morning. The second group could recall nearly twice as many words, and those students were also more likely to explain what the words meant.
"Sleep is not a waste of time," says Dr Huang, who led the study. "While you sleep, your brain goes through the new information again and again and moves it into long-term memory. Sleep also helps the body repair a wound and keep the blood healthy, so the brain is never fully at rest. To start with, many students believe that staying up late is the best way to prepare. In fact, it mixes up what they have just learned."
Dr Huang also warns that anxiety before exams can wear out the brain. "The technique is simple," she says. "Study actively during the day, and give your brain a stable eight hours at night. Keep one rule in mind: a regular habit will boost your memory far more than one long night." Most grown-ups would be surprised by this. When I ask whether the position of the desk matters, she laughs. "Pardon? Any quiet corner will do, as long as you put the time to good use."
Since the study came out, several schools have moved their first class to eight thirty. News travels fast along the grapevine, and the number of students who stay up after midnight has dropped by a third. "We are not sure why this small change works so well," Dr Huang says. "But the increase in test scores is real, and teachers now discuss the results with their classes."
