It only took her half a month to ride a horse on her own. By the way, I’m going to drive her there next Saturday. Do you want to join us? W: Sure. M: Then you’d better wear comfortable shoes. As beginners, people usually lead the horses and feed them to get the horses familiar with them for safety reasons. W: Do I need to prepare a helmet? M: The club provides free ones. As a corporate psychologist, I have always emphasized the importance of small work habits — they can make or break long-term performance. Let me start with something simple — keep your workspace functional. I once worked with a project manager who was used to keeping all the distractions out of his sight and key documents within arm’s reach, which helped him stay focused and achieve great success in his career. Communication with colleagues is another common challenge. Don’t try to impress them by nonstop talking. Listen first and respond properly instead. Next, asking for leave is where many employees trip up. It’s widely believed that a good excuse matters greatly. However, planning your work beforehand is actually the key priority. I advise you to request politely, explain how your duties will be covered, and avoid last-minute surprises. Getting into good working habits isn’t a 100-meter sprint — it’s a marathon. Keep the points I’ve mentioned in mind, and gradually put theory into practice. A Thanks for your interest in visiting the Los Angeles Zoo with your school group! They can enjoy 10% off.(只有提前预约的加州学校团体,简称CSG(在加州教育部注册)才能享受特别折扣的入场费。 根据PLEASE NOTE:中“Reservation blackout dates (限制日期) may apply to all groups at certain times of the year (e.g. holidays and spring break). If your group comes on a blackout date or has not made the necessary reservations before arriving at the Zoo, your group will be charged the regular admission fees. 通读全文,根据第一段中“Thanks for your interest in visiting the Los Angeles Zoo with your school group! Please read the following information before booking your field trip. 故选A项。 B In first grade, I took a spelling test with the word “of” on it. O-F. Of. Every student in the class spelled it correctly except Malcolm, who wrote “Uv.” I initially thought how stupid this kid was. But later it hit me that spelling “of” with a U and a V made more sense than with an O and an F, which had nothing to do with the sounds in the word “of.” Why was this ever-so-simple word spelled so illogically? The best answer I had was: That’s just the way it is. That’s what adults told me was the truth, and that’s how I had to spell the word to get it right on the test. So I’d better just keep quiet, look smart, and use an O and an F. I didn’t know it then, but this was my first brush with an understanding of what indoctrination was. We all embraced standards silently because they were backed by authority and custom. It was the rule, and the world would see Malcolm as stupid, and not the spelling. As I grew older, this memory helped me realize that the world has lots of strange rules and assumptions that we rarely question. As a teenager, I called them “uvisms,” spelled with a U and a V. For example, we are often told that success means good grades, yet many creative minds struggle in school but shine later in life. Such beliefs don’t always hold true. Growing up, I recognized the presence of these uvisms in the expectations placed on me by my surroundings. My parents, though well-meaning, handed down values that no longer fit my life. I doubted many, chose my own path and achieved great success — just as I chose to spell “of” with O and F to pass the test, but never stopped thinking about the U and the V. I have learned that many rules and traditions are there for good reasons, but many are not. You don’t have to follow all of them. I believe in the misspelling of the word “of,” and the necessity for each generation to rethink the assumptions of the previous generation. 24. What did the author think of “Uv”? A. It seemed odd but reasonable. B. It showed Malcolm’s talent. C. It helped to achieve good grades. D. It proved novel but controversial. 25. What does the underlined word “indoctrination” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Promoting creative projects. B. Teaching without questioning. C. Extending existing standards. D. Interacting without interrupting. 26. How did the author feel about the “uvisms”? A. Respectful. B. Astonished. C. Inspired. D. Critical. 27. What does the author’s experience show? A. Interest is the best teacher. B. Curiosity is the key to knowledge. C. Doubt is the beginning of wisdom. D. Creativity is the bridge to success. A 25. B 26. D 27. 根据第一段“But later it hit me that spelling “of” with a U and a V made more sense than with an O and an F, which had nothing to do with the sounds in the word “of.” 根据第三段“I didn’t know it then, but this was my first brush with an understanding of what indoctrination was. We all embraced standards silently because they were backed by authority and custom. It was the rule, and the world would see Malcolm as stupid, and not the spelling. 根据第四段“As I grew older, this memory helped me realize that the world has lots of strange rules and assumptions that we rarely question. 以及“Such beliefs don’t always hold true. (这类观念并非永远成立)”以及第五段“I doubted many, chose my own path and achieved great success (我质疑许多固有观念,选择自己的道路并取得成功)”可知,作者对“uvisms”这类盲从的固有规则持批判态度。 根据第五段“I doubted many, chose my own path and achieved great success — just as I chose to spell “of” with O and F to pass the test, but never stopped thinking about the U and the V. (我质疑许多固有观念,选择自己的道路并取得成功——就像我选择用O和F拼写“of”来通过考试一样,却从未停止思考U和V的存在。)”以及最后一段“I believe in the misspelling of the word “of,” and the necessity for each generation to rethink the assumptions of the previous generation. C Is it true that our brain alone is responsible for human cognition (认知)? What about our body? Is it possible for thought and behavior to originate from somewhere other than our brain? Psychologists who study Embodied Cognition (EC) ask similar questions. The EC theory suggests our body is also responsible for thinking or problem-solving. More precisely, the mind shapes the body and the body shapes the mind in equal measure. If you think about it for a moment, it makes total sense. When you smell something good or hear amusing sounds, certain emotions are awakened. Think about how newborns use their senses to understand the world around them. They don’t have emotions so much as needs — they don’t feel sad, they’re just hungry and need food. Even unborn babies can feel their mothers’ heartbeats and this has a calming effect. In the real world, they cry when they’re cold and then get hugged. That way, they start to associate being warm with being loved. Understandably, theorists have been arguing for years and still disagree on whether the brain is the nerve centre that operates the rest of the body. Older Western philosophers and mainstream language researchers believe this is fact, while EC theorizes that the brain and body are working together as an organic supercomputer, processing everything and forming your reactions. Further studies have backed up the mind-body interaction. In one experiment, test subjects (实验对象) were asked to judge people after being handed a hot or a cold drink. They all made warm evaluations when their fingertips perceived warmth rather than coolness. And it works the other way too; in another study, subjects’ fingertip temperatures were measured after being“included” in or “rejected” from a group task. Those who were included felt physically warmer. For further proof, we can look at the metaphors (比喻说法) that we use without even thinking. A kind and sympathetic person is frequently referred to as one with a soft heart and someone who is very strong and calm in difficult situations is often described as solid as a rock. And this kind of metaphorical use is common across languages. Now that you have the knowledge of mind-body interaction, why not use it? If you’re having a bad day, a warm cup of tea will give you a flash of pleasure. If you know you’re physically cold, warm up before making any interpersonal decisions. 28. According to the author, the significance of the EC theory lies in ________. A. facilitating our understanding of the origin of psychology B. revealing the major role of the mind in human cognition C. offering a clearer picture of the shape of human brain D. bringing us closer to the truth in human cognition 29. Where does the newborns’ understanding of their surroundings start from? A. Their personal looks. B. Their mental needs. C. Their inner emotions. D. Their physical feelings. 30. What does the author intend to prove by citing the metaphors in Paragraph 5? A. Human speech is alive with metaphors. B. Human senses have effects on thinking. C. Human language is shaped by visual images. D. Human emotions are often compared to natural materials. 31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph? A. To share with the reader ways to release their emotions. B. To guide the reader onto the path to career success. C. To encourage the reader to put EC into practice. D. To deepen the reader’s understanding of EC. D 29. D 30. B 31. 根据第一段中“The EC theory suggests our body is also responsible for thinking or problem-solving. More precisely, the mind shapes the body and the body shapes the mind in equal measure. 根据第二段中“Think about how newborns use their senses to understand the world around them. 根据第五段“For further proof, we can look at the metaphors (比喻说法) that we use without even thinking. A kind and sympathetic person is frequently referred to as one with a soft heart and someone who is very strong and calm in difficult situations is often described as solid as a rock. And this kind of metaphorical use is common across languages. 根据最后一段“Now that you have the knowledge of mind-body interaction, why not use it? If you’re having a bad day, a warm cup of tea will give you a flash of pleasure. If you know you’re physically cold, warm up before making any interpersonal decisions. D An artificial intelligence can decode (解码) words and sentences from brain activity with surprising accuracy. Using only a few seconds of brain activity data, the AI guesses what a person has heard. It lists the correct answer in its top 10 possibilities, researchers found in a primary study. Developed at the parent company of Facebook, Meta, the AI could eventually be used to help thousands of people around the world who are unable to communicate through speech, typing or gestures. Most existing technologies to help such patients communicate require risky brain surgeries to put in electrodes (电极). This new approach “could provide a possible path to help patients with communication problems, avoiding the use of surgeries,” says neuroscientist Jean-Rémi King, a Meta AI researcher. King and his colleagues trained a computational tool, also known as a language model, to detect words and sentences on 56, 000 hours of speech recordings from 53 languages. The team applied an AI with this language model to databases from four institutions that included brain activity from 169 volunteers. In these databases, participants listened to various stories and sentences, while the people’s brains were scanned by magnetoencephalography (MEG)(脑磁图). Then with the help of a computational method that helps account for physical differences among actual brains, the team tried to decode what participants had heard using just three seconds of brain activity data from each person. The team instructed the AI to match up the speech sounds from the story recordings with patterns of brain activity that the AI computed as corresponding to what people were hearing. It then made predictions about what the person might have been hearing during that short time, given more than 1, 000 possibilities. Using MEG, the correct answer was in the AI’s top 10 guesses, the researchers found. “The new study is decoding of speech recognition, not production,” King agrees, “Though speech production is the final goal, for now, we’re quite a long way away.” 32. What is the main advantage of the new technology? A. Avoiding dangerous operations on patients. B. Freeing patients from risky brain operations. C. Providing a path to communicate with others. D. Helping patients with communication problems. 33. What does the AI require to make its prediction? A. Top ten guesses. B. Speech production. C. Patterns of brain activity. D. Volunteers with disability. 34. What does Jean-Rémi King think of the new study? A. Disappointing. B. Promising. C. Surprising. D. Exciting. 35. What is the best title for the text? A. A New Way to Decode Speech B. The Application of MEG Technology C. A New Study on Artificial Intelligence D. A Solution to Communication Problems 【答案】32. B 33. C 34. B 35. 根据第三段中“This new approach “could provide a possible path to help patients with communication problems, avoiding the use of surgeries”(这种新方法“可以提供一条可能的途径,帮助有沟通问题的患者,避免使用手术。”)” 根据第五段中的“The team instructed the AI to match up the speech sounds from the story recordings with patterns of brain activity that the AI computed as corresponding to what people were hearing. It then made predictions about what the person might have been hearing during that short time, given more than 1, 000 possibilities.(该团队指示人工智能将故事录音中的语音与人工智能计算出的与人们听到的内容相对应的大脑活动模式相匹配。 根据最后一段的““The new study is decoding of speech recognition, not production,” King agrees, “Though speech production is the final goal, for now, we’re quite a long way away.”(“新的研究是解码语音识别,而不是产生,”King同意,“虽然语音产生是最终目标,但目前,我们还有很长的路要走。”)” 通读全文,尤其是第一段的“An artificial intelligence can decode (解码) words and sentences from brain activity with surprising accuracy. Using only a few seconds of brain activity data, the AI guesses what a person has heard.(人工智能可以以惊人的准确度从大脑活动中解码单词和句子。 和第二段的“Developed at the parent company of Facebook, Meta, the AI could eventually be used to help thousands of people around the world who are unable to communicate through speech, typing or gestures.(这款人工智能由Facebook的母公司Meta开发,最终可用于帮助全球成千上万无法通过语音、打字或手势进行交流的人。)” With climate change continuing to worsen, our situation is beginning to feel increasingly serious. ____36____ Is it right? Maybe not. Techno-optimism is one of the greatest misconceptions when it comes to solutions to ensure our future. It can be defined as a belief that future technologies will solve all of our current problems. This definition reinforces (强化) the idea that there’s no reason to panic or change our current energy-intensive lifestyle. All society needs to do is look to green technology to work its magic. ____37____ One of the best examples of this optimistic misconception is the electric car. Despite being highly regarded as an eco-friendly way to get around, electric cars are not the end for the future of transport. Batteries in electric cars use chemical elements which we could be seeing a shortage of by the midcentury. ____38____ Techno-optimism has led many to believe that if everyone just switched to driving electric vehicles, we would be making incredible steps towards sustainability. However, the reality is that the amount of resources and energy needed to produce enough electric vehicles for everyone is not even remotely sustainable. ____39____ Investing in public transportation and moving away from individually owned vehicles. Producing fewer cars. Improving recycling practices of old batteries. The solutions we seek should not be rooted in new technology, but be about changing the way our society functions. Techno-optimism puts too much emphasis on technology and not enough on what we can do right this minute. Unfortunately, people seem to like the picture that techno-optimism paints. ____40____ It is important to understand that the problem begins when we see those technologies as a way to make our current lifestyles eco-friendly. 【36题详解】 根据上文“With climate change continuing to worsen, our situation is beginning to feel increasingly serious.(随着气候变化的持续恶化,我们的情况开始变得越来越严重)”可知,气候问题持续恶化,人类的情况开始变得越来越严重。 结合下文“Techno-optimism is one of the greatest misconceptions when it comes to solutions to ensure our future. It can be defined as a belief that future technologies will solve all of our current problems.(当谈到确保我们未来的解决方案时,技术乐观主义是最大的误解之一。 B项“The modern world’s simple solution is technology.(现代世界的简单解决方案就是技术)”符合题意。 根据上文“Techno-optimism is one of the greatest misconceptions when it comes to solutions to ensure our future. It can be defined as a belief that future technologies will solve all of our current problems. This definition reinforces (强化) the idea that there’s no reason to panic or change our current energy-intensive lifestyle. All society needs to do is look to green technology to work its magic.(当谈到确保我们未来的解决方案时,技术乐观主义是最大的误解之一。 E项“Unfortunately, this is an incredibly dangerous opinion to hold.(不幸的是,这是一个极其危险的观点)”符合题意。故选E。 【38题详解】 根据上文“One of the best examples of this optimistic misconception is the electric car. Despite being highly regarded as an eco-friendly way to get around, electric cars are not the end for the future of transport. Batteries in electric cars use chemical elements which we could be seeing a shortage of by the midcentury.(电动汽车就是这种乐观误解的最好例子之一。 C项“Moreover, they are more energy intensive to produce.(此外,它们的生产更耗能)”符合题意。 根据下文“Investing in public transportation and moving away from individually owned vehicles. Producing fewer cars, Improving recycling practices of old batteries. The solutions we seek should not be rooted in new technology, but be about changing the way our society functions.(投资公共交通,远离个人拥有的车辆。 A项“So where should we look for answers instead?(那么,我们应该在哪里寻找答案呢?)” 故选A。 【40题详解】 根据上文“Techno-optimism puts too much emphasis on technology and not enough on what we can do right this minute. Unfortunately, people seem to like the picture that techno-optimism paints.(技术乐观主义过于强调技术,而对我们现在能做的事情却不够重视。不幸的是,人们似乎喜欢技术乐观主义所描绘的画面)”和下文“It is important to understand that the problem begins when we see those technologies as a way to make our current lifestyles eco-friendly. G项“Nevertheless, the truth is, we need a widespread change in our lifestyles.(然而,事实是,我们需要广泛改变我们的生活方式)”符合题意。 I log onto a computer at the doctor’s office to say I have arrived and then wait until a voice calls me into the examination room. Niesha could not forget the way she had frozen in front of the class. Mr. Roberts had divided the class into groups to do presentations. Today had been Niesha’s turn. However, her hands had shaken so badly that she couldn’t read her notes. Her voice had become softer to the point of silence. Mr. Roberts had kindly ended Niesha’s part of the presentation, even though she had clearly not finished. He had also asked Niesha to stay after class for a moment. “Niesha, I know you’re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up on yourself.” Then Mr. Roberts hesitated, before saying, “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage?” Niesha nodded, grateful for the chance. She went as quickly as she could to her next class. She kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon. When she reached the back steps that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Mom was baking. Mom studied Niesha’s face as she came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, Niesha?” Tears shone in Niesha’s brown eyes. She told her the whole story. Mom was silent for a moment, her hands still busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can’t talk to your class?” Mom asked. She set the timer (计时器) and then said, “Let me show you something.” Niesha followed Mom to her bedroom. There Mom showed her a book filled with newspaper clippings and pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon (丝带) that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents. “I won it for public speaking (演讲). When I started on the speech team I was quiet as a mouse, but I ended the year as the winner. It wasn’t easy at first — I wasn’t sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage.” Hearing Mom’s words, Niesha gazed at the precious blue ribbon, lost in thought. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The next day Niesha again walked to the front of the classroom to give her presentation. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文参考 Hearing Mom’s words, Niesha gazed at the precious blue ribbon, lost in thought. She imagined the scene where her Mom tried her best to overcome her fears and pluck up her courage to deliver a fantastic speech to the audience. Perceiving Niesha’s anxiety, Mom reassured her and reached out her hand to tie the blue ribbon onto Niesha’s wrist with a disarming smile. Restored and determined, she gritted her teeth to find her courage. In front of the mirror parked Neisha continuously practicing from pronunciation to tone, even gesture. “Try harder,” she perked herself up when drowsiness fell upon her. The next day Niesha again walked to the front of the classroom to give her presentation. Shy, she customarily lowered her head and averted her gaze, numb there for seconds. Shortly afterwards, courage found its way back the moment she caught sight of the blue ribbon. Comforted and inspired, she took a deep breath, and summoned up her courage, “Dear fellow students, …” Niesha cast a glance at Mr Roberts standing in the corner smiling at her. A self-reassuring smile spread across Niesha’s face. She knew for sure that she had found her courage in the adversity. 词类激活: 行为类: 想象:imagine/picture 克服:overcome/get over 情绪类 担忧:anxiety/concern 受鼓舞的:inspired/motivated 【点睛】【高分句型1】She imagined the scene where her Mom tried her best to overcome her fears and pluck up her courage to deliver a fantastic speech to the audience. Where is the text most likely from? A. A bulletin board. B. A magazine. C. A journal. D. A report. B In first grade, I took a spelling test with the word “of” on it. O-F. A Solution to Communication Problems With climate change continuing to worsen, our situation is beginning to feel increasingly serious. Until we are ready to face the need for a less complex life, we cannot make true progress towards sustainability. A. So where should we look for answers instead? B. The modern world’s simple solution is technology. C. Moreover, they are more energy intensive to produce. D. Is it a trap that many people have fallen into in recent years? E. Unfortunately, this is an incredibly dangerous opinion to hold. F. Despite any technology, we as a whole are not living sustainably. G. Nevertheless, the truth is, we need a widespread change in our lifestyles. I log onto a computer at the doctor’s office to say I have arrived and then wait until a voice calls me into the examination room. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
