I have integrated myself into the culture and connected with the people here, even though the journey has been really tough,” said Calista Ajibola, a British student, who has just completed a two-year boarding school scholarship program in China, launched by the UK charity Engage with China. Yet her early days in China were far from easy. Culture shock was striking for Ajibola. The endless high-rise apartments instead of low-rise houses, the “motorcycle army” dominating the roads and the mosquito bites in the burning hot summer were all unusual for a British student. The language barrier, however, proved an even greater frustration. Though she had studied Chinese for five years and achieved a top grade in her GCSE exam, she was rarely understood in real conversations. “People often couldnˈt understand me when I first arrived in China and would ask me to switch to English. I had scored a nine in my GCSE Chinese exam, so it was incredibly frustrating, at times even disheartening,” she recalled. But as time went on, armed with the courage to make mistakes, determination to improve, hours of practice, and plenty of help from her Chinese teacher, she gradually mastered real-life communication. Eventually, her Chinese reached the point where she could guide her family around China, chat with taxi drivers, bargain over prices, and sort out problems that came up. Looking back, she had no regrets about the difficult start. “If I had the chance to live it all again, I wouldnˈt change a thing,” she reflected. Now back in the UK, Ajibola carries more than language skills—she has gained an understanding of China that has broadened her worldview. Her story is shared by 34 British students who have completed the program since 2023, with a third group set to depart soon. For Ajibola, that step led to a transformative chapter she would never forget—a quiet testament (证明) to the idea that though languages differ and customs vary, genuine connections between cultures go beyond borders and they are universal and shared. 24.Why did Calista Ajibola say “I feel like I am leaving a part of myself in China!” ? A. She lost part of her cultural identity. B. She regretted her tough journey to China. C. She grew attached to China deeply. D. She struggled to adapt to life in China. 25.What troubled Ajibola most at first in China? A. Hot weather. B. Mosquito bites. C. Motorcycle dominance. D. Communication barriers. 26.Which of the following words can best describe Ajibola? A. Determined and adaptable. B. Outgoing and modest. C. Courageous and patient. D. Talented and humorous. 27.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us? A. More British students will join the program soon. B. Language ability is key to fitting into a new culture. C. Ajibolaˈs experience shows a universal bond across cultures. D. Ajibola now works as a cultural bridge ambassador in Britain. C An exhibition of paintings of ancient Chinese characters was held in 2024 in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, with the aim of promoting people-to-people and cultural exchanges. The art exhibition, which displayed a collection of artworks based on the classic I Ching (《易经》), brought together Ethiopian artist Dawit Muluneh, the creator of the artworks, and Chinese calligrapher Wu Jiuyi, who produced examples of calligraphy on the spot. Speaking at the event, its organizer Gossa Oda said the exhibition was an opportunity to showcase cultural commonalities and shared knowledge between the two countries. “In organizing this exhibition, I want to communicate the ancient mystery of I Ching, which helps improve connectivity between China andEthiopia and promote their shared future. A shared future starts from shared knowledge,” said Oda, who is also the owner of the Medemer Africa Art and Sculpture Space, where the 64 paintings are housed. Oda said such an exhibition would strengthen people-to-people ties and cultural exchanges, stressing the importance of knowledge and civilizations for human development. The paintings describe the 64 divinatory (占卜的) symbols found in I Ching, which represent the day-to-day interaction between man and nature. “They are meant to share knowledge and feelings with visitors with descriptions written in Chinese, English and Amharic,” said Muluneh, who painted all 64 paintings in a year. He said the exhibition could be considered as a stepping-stone to promoting cultural exchanges and creating win-win situations for common development between the peoples of China and Ethiopia. “The backgrounds of the paintings make use of Ethiopian styles and express the ideas of harvest, relief and so on, among others,” said Muluneh, who drew similarities and captured essential parts from the traditional arts of both countries. In an interview, Wu said that he was taken by surprise when he saw an Ethiopian artist painting Chinese characters. The exhibition attracted members of the Chinese community in Addis Ababa, Ethiopian artists and schoolchildren. 28.Why was the exhibition held in Addis Ababa? A. To promote Ethiopian art globally. B. The stele (石碑) was constructed over 600 years ago during Zheng Heˈs expeditions. The steleˈs rounded top features two dragons playing with a pearl. It is the only one surviving overseas that is related to Zhengˈs voyages. Itˈs still distinguishable today. It tells us that Zheng paid respect to religious sites and made celebration offerings during his visits. Carved in three languages—Chinese, Tamil and Persian—the stele has a historical value beyond words. “There are many multilingual inscriptions in the world, but most of them are bilingual,” says Wang Hongmin from the National Archives Administration of China. “Among the trilingual ones, only two include Chinese. The Galle Trilingual Inscription is the only one inscribed in Chinese, Persian and Tamil.” The inscription records Zhengˈs offerings of equal value to several deities (神祇). “This practice reflects Zhengˈs respect for religious diversity,” says Wang Deyan from the North China University of Technology. This year marks the 620th anniversary of Zhengˈs voyages. The explorer first set sail from Nanjing in1405 and traveled as far as the eastern coast of Africa. At the time, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) served as a key maritime center in the Indian Ocean. It played a vital role in connecting Asian countries with the Arab world. “Experts generally agree that Zheng stopped in Ceylon on almost every voyage,” notes Wang Deyan. “He was on cordial terms with the local people. Their interactions not only facilitated cultural exchanges but also laid a solid foundation for trade between China and Ceylon at that time.” China and Sri Lanka have maintained a long-standing and close partnership in the study and preservation of the Galle Trilingual Inscription. It is a symbol of the historical relationship between the two nations and a reminder to cherish cultural diversity. 32.Why is the Galle Trilingual Inscription special? A. It is inscribed in three languages. B. It has complicated structure. C. It was built by local people. D. It can still be recognized. 33.What role does paragraph 5 play in the text? A. Today had been Niesha′s turn. However, her hands had shaken so badly that she couldn′t read her notes. Her voice had become softer even to silence. Mr. Roberts had kindly ended Niesha′s part of the presentation even though she had clearly not finished. He had also asked Niesha to stay after class for a moment.     "Niesha, I know you′re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I′d hate to see you give up on yourself." Mr. Roberts had hesitated,"If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage?"Niesha had nodded, grateful for the chance. She had gone as quickly as she could to her next class. She had kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.     When she reached her back steps that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Momma was baking. Momma studied Niesha′s face as she came into the kitchen. "What′s wrong, Niesha?"     Tears shone in Niesha′s brown eyes. She told her the whole story. Momma was silent for a moment, her hands still busy with the cake. "Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can′t talk to your class?" Momma asked. She set the timer and then said, "Let me show you something."     Niesha followed Momma to her bedroom. There Momma showed her a book filled with newspaper clippings and pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon (丝带) that said "First Place" and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.     "I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. It wasn′t easy at first—not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage." 注意: (1)续写词数应为150左右: (2)请按如下格式在相应位置作答。    Para 1 : It was the second time she had been told the same on that day. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________    Para 2 :  The next day Niesha again walked to the front of the classroom to give her presentation. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页,共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ Unit 2 Bridging Cultures 单元练习卷 -2026-2027学年高中英语 人教版选择性必修第二册答案及解析 (试卷满分:150分 考试时间:120分钟) 第一部分 单词练习(共两节,满分 30 分) 第一节 单句语法填空(共 10小题;每小题 1.5分,满分 15分) 1. motivation 2. expectations 3. surroundings 4. depressed 5. involved 6. ambitious 7. Niesha gazed at the precious blue ribbon, imaging the scene where her momma tried her best to overcome her fears and pluck up her courage to deliver a fantastic speech to the audience. Perceiving Neisha′s anxiety, Momma reassured her and reached out her hand to tie the blue ribbon onto Niesha′s wrist with a disarming smile. Restored and determined, she gritted her teeth to find her courage. In front of the mirror parked Neisha continuously practicing from pronunciation to tone, even gesture. " Try harder", she perked herself up when drowsiness fell upon her.     The next day Niesha again walked to the front of the classroom to give her presentation. Shy, she customarily lowered her head and averted her gaze, numb there for seconds. Shortly after, courage found its way back the moment she caught sight of the blue ribbon. Comforted and inspired, she took a deep breath, summoned up her courage, "Dear fellow students,..."Niesha cast a glance at Mr.Roberts standing in the corner smiling at her.
