B It has been four years since Grandma Joy told her grandson that she had never seen the most beautiful views of America. Since then, they had gone on many cross-country trips. Brad Ryan had been feeling tired of studying in a vet (兽医) school when he visited his 85-year-old grandma in 2015. He hoped that spending some quality family time would help lift his spirits. As he was telling his grandma stories of his travels, however, he was heartbroken to hear that she had never seen the ocean or mountains. Ryan then asked his grandmother if she would like to go hiking with him. Needless to say, she was more than happy to agree. They have since visited 29 different national parks across America — from the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado to the Acadia National Park in Maine. Over the four years, Ryan and his grandma have driven 25, 000 miles through 38 states. And it has greatly improved his quality of life. “Seeing it through my grandmother’s eyes, who every morning wakes up and is thankful to be alive, has taught me how to live,” Ryan said. “With her, I’ve had to slow down and see life in a different way, which has made it a lot richer.” “I love my grandma so much, and the time being with my grandma just really gave me a lot of peace when she passed away. I can go back to these places, feel her spirit, and feel connected to her,” he added. Ryan has posted all of their trips on a website. He hopes more young people will spare time to be with their elders. “I want young people to know that hanging out with your grandparents is cool. And there’s so much we can learn from our elders,” Ryan said. 24. Why did Brad Ryan visit his grandma in 2015? A. To cheer himself up. B. To please his grandma. C. To take his grandma to travel. D. To share his travelling experiences. 25. How did Brad Ryan feel when he heard his grandma had never seen the ocean or mountains? A. Shocked. B. Sad. C. Doubtful. D. Excited. 26. She gave him a lot of encouragement. 27. What is Brad Ryan’s purpose of posting their trips online? A. To advise young people to take a trip. B. To share his joy of travelling with his friends. C. To encourage the young to spend time with their elders. D. To show young people what they can learn in vet schools. C Whale communication has long been a puzzle for scientists, with their underwater sound — “click… click… click” — remaining largely unexplained. However, thanks to the surprising abilities of artificial intelligence (AI), researchers from a program can interpret the sounds of these amazing sea animals. The program is called the Whale Translation Project (WTP), whose meaning is to know what whales are saying. Its goal is clear but very difficult to achieve. Understanding the communication of whales and other animals could inspire protection efforts. For example, the discovery that humpback whales sing to each other in the 1960s led to successful protection activities and laws. The WTP started when Gruber, a biologist at Harvard University, turned to a computer scientist for help about dealing with a large amount of data on whale sounds. They thought of applying machine learning — a tool for human language translation — to whales. The sound of click, similar to a binary code (二进制), is easy for AI to analyze. Scientists once used lines to show how many clicks a whale made each second. Now, with the help of AI, Gruber can quickly turn the thousands of whale sounds from hours of recordings into a new kind of pictures that look like musical notes. This method helps to find small differences in the sounds. Gruber can use AI to study these differences and the specific situation, such as whales moving up to the surface and looking for food. In this way, he can easily understand what whale sounds mean. He can also discover how whales communicate, getting 99% right in predicting (预测) the next click. This kind of work isn’t limited to whales. Suresh Neethirajan, a computer science and agriculture professor, studies how farmers can use real-time observation to explain animal behaviors. He collects data, such as body temperature, together with recorded sounds and videos, to see whether animals are comfortable or not. With AI, he can recognize sick animals quickly, improving their health. 28. What is the purpose of mentioning the discovery in the 1960s? A. To show the success of protecting the environment. B. To explain the difficulty of saving humpback whales. C. To stress the value of studying animal communication. D. To introduce the challenge of understanding whale language. 29. How can AI help according to paragraph 4? A. It records whale sound quickly. B. It processes sound data effectively. C. It reads musical notes correctly. D. It promotes whale interactions directly. 30. What can we learn about AI according to the last paragraph? A. It cures diseases of animals. B. It improves farmers’ well-being. C. It aims to change animal behavior. D. It helps to understand animals’ needs. 31. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Scientists develop machine learning. B. Scientists discover a new whale sound. C. AI creates a unique type of musical note. D. AI unlocks the secrets of animal language. D There are billions of people on this planet, and many of us love to eat meat. In 2024 alone, the average American ate more than 100kg of red meat, according to a report from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). At the same time, the environmental influence caused by meat consumption (消耗) — waste, animal treatment, health issues and even the greenhouse gas effects — has resulted in a number of startups (新兴企业) looking for ways to fill our growing need for meat. But can the need be filled in an eco-friendly and affordable way? A lot of companies are not only optimistic but are working to make this happen sooner. All of these companies harvest cells from animals and grow them in a lab. For example, San Francisco-based Memphis Meats is developing cell-based meat in its laboratories by making fat and muscle cells without requiring any animals. And don’t worry if you’re not a meat lover. Startups such as Jet Eat, are producing meats that are plant-based, using natural elements while still keeping taste. As you can imagine, there are plenty of problems in the industry. Educating the public is a big one. Another heated argument is the labeling of the products. Meat industry trade groups have been pressing the USDA to label these meats as “imitation products”. Many of us have concerns about the challenges facing future generations as our global population increases and the earth’s natural resources decrease. The good news is that there are plenty of companies around the world — like those producing lab-grown meats — who are working to solve some of these problems and make a few bucks in the process. 32. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 2 probably refer to? A. Protecting the meat industry. B. Encouraging a healthy lifestyle. C. Reducing meat consumption gradually. D. Meeting human’s new need for meat in an eco-friendly way. 33. What kind of meat does Jet Eat produce? A. It looks like plants completely. B. It is harvested directly from animals. C. It tastes like real meat. D. It contains fat and muscle cells. 34. According to the passage, how can people tell the lab-grown meat? A. By checking the label. B. By receiving public education. C. By observing it closely. D. By calling the USDA. 35. What is the best title for the text? A. Strange jobs done by new startups. B. Lab-grown meat ready to feed the world. C. Effective ways used when shopping. D. The existing trouble faced by humans. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 There is no short cut to success, this is the first thing you should remember.
