阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
People You’ve Never Heard of Who Changed the World
It is a fact that most people live their lives unremarked by history. Whether by design or by accident, there are always some pioneers whose achievements changed the course of history but whose names are unknown to us.
James Harrison
James Harrison has saved the lives of over two million people by donating his blood 1,173 times, a Guinness world record. His blood produces a rare antibody (抗体) which cures the otherwise deadly Rhesus disease in unborn children. It has also been used in the development of a medicine anti-D, which will cure the Rhesus disease in children forever.
Lewis Latimer
After helping Alexander Graham Bell obtain his patent for the telephone, Lewis Latimer patented a carbon filament (碳灯丝), which allowed light bulbs to burn for hours before burning out, much more useful than that invented by Thomas Edison at that time. Latimer went on to invent many other useful devices, including a device which cooled and cleaned patients’ rooms in hospitals.
Maurice Hilleman
Not all achievements require bravery and self-sacrifice. Take Maurice Hilleman for example. He found another way to change the world. He developed the mumps vaccine (疫苗) after his daughter got the illness. And he didn’t stop there. In total, he has single-handedly developed over 40 vaccines, including eight commonly given to children. His work has saved millions of lives and prevented serious consequences due to the diseases.
Nils Bohlin
In 1959 Nils Bohlin patented a revolutionary design that has saved millions of lives — the three-point safety belt. After the initial resistance from drivers who hated being told what to do, and even for their own good, the three-point belt has become a standard feature in new cars around the world.
21. Whose patent allowed light bulbs to burn for hours before burning out?
A. Alexander Graham Bell. B. Lewis Latimer.
C. Thomas Edison. D. Nils Bohlin.
22. What’s the similarity between James Harrison and Maurice Hilleman?
A. They both had spirits of bravery and self-sacrifice.
B. They devoted themselves to work because of family members.
C. Their contributions saved the lives of many children.
D. They both set a Guinness world record.
23. What were drivers’ initial attitudes to the three-point seat belt according to the passage?
A. They refused to use it. B. They were satisfied with it.
C. They were surprised at it. D. They got excited about it.
B
The last time I visited my parents, I borrowed a novel from the shelves in my old bedroom. The books there once belonged to me, but over the decades, my father has taken over the space. It’s fitting.
I grew up in a house full of books, free to explore anything, as long as I returned it. But that’s harder now. My parents, in their 80s, still live in Manhattan, while I’m in Los Angeles. The book I grabbed was a novel by S. A. Cosby. At first, I was surprised my father knew of him, but why not? For as long as I can remember, he’s been a regular at his neighborhood bookstore. He used to say he wouldn’t mind aging as long as he could read. Even now, I often find him with a book, though I fear he’s begun to fall out of the narrative (叙述).
I didn’t read the book until I was back in Southern California. I didn’t want my father to know I had the book. I didn’t want him to feel any stress about it, though the two of us have been talking books ever since I was 12. I didn’t want to know what he might or might not recall.
Opening it felt like opening a conversation with my father, retracing his steps and reading through his eyes. I enjoyed the novel, though that’s beside the point. What struck me most was a plotline about feeling sad for one’s parents, a process I’m beginning to understand. When I finished, I ran my fingers over my father’s mark on the cover, those letters he’d pressed into the cover with a hand-held metal press, spelling out a name the same as mine. Then I slipped the book into my suitcase, certain to return it next time I visit.
24. Why is it fitting for the father to take over the author’s old space?
A. Because both are attached to reading.
B. Because the father loves collecting books.
C. Because the author’s books are preserved there.
D. Because the father needs space for bookshelves.
25. Why didn’t the author want his father to know he had the book?
A. To put the book into his own collection.
B. To free his father from too much reading.
C. To avoid pressure on his father to discuss it.
D. To maintain a sense of privacy in reading.
26. How did the author feel while reading Cosby’s novel?
A. Inspired by the plotline. B. Connected to his father.
C. Eager to share with others. D. Surprised at his father’s mark.
27. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Returning Home B. My Father, a Great Reader
C. The Power of Books D. Love through Pages
C
Many kids help out around the house with chores such as emptying the dishwasher, putting laundry away, and taking out the trash. In exchange, some kids get pocket money or other rewards such as extra computer time.
But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores. Susie Walton, a parenting educator and family coach, believes that by rewarding kids, parents are sending a message that work isn’t worth doing unless you get something in return. “Running any kind of household is a team effort,” Susie said. “A home is a living space for everyone in the family. It’s important for kids to see that we all have responsibilities in the house, and that families decide together what they want their home to look like, and how they make it look like what everyone wants.”
Other people believe that getting pocket money or other rewards motivates kids to do chores, and it also teaches them real world lessons about how we need to work to earn money. There are also new applications that give kids points and digital gifts that can be redeemed (兑换) either online or in the real world. With the ChoreMonster app, kids earn digital points by completing chores that they can turn in for real-life rewards such as extra Xbox time or a trip to the mall. “Our goal is to encourage kids to earn rewards,” says Chris Bergman, founder of ChoreMonster. “Kids need positive reinforcement to help motivate them.”
What do you think? Should kids be rewarded for doing chores? Or should kids help out around their homes without getting anything in return?
Write a 200-word response. Send it to tfkasks4you@timeforkids. com. Your response may be published in a future issue of Time For Kids. Please include your grade and contact information of your parent or teacher if you want your response to be published. The deadline for responding is February 18.
28. How does the author start the passage?
A. By presenting some facts. B. By listing some evidence.
C. By comparing different views. D. By stating his own experiences.
29. According to Susie Walton, ______.
A. kids should be rewarded for doing chores
B. parents decide what kids can do for the family
C. kids have the responsibility to share housework
D. kids can get extra computer time for doing chores
30. Paragraph 3 is mainly about ______.
A. Chris Bergman’s opinion on raising kids
B. main reasons why kids need encouragement
C. how to motivate kids to try new applications
D. the advantage of rewarding kids for doing chores
31. The purpose of writing the text is to ______.
A. inform readers of two different opinions
B. invite readers to express their opinions
C. call on readers to reflect on their behavior
D. present the author’s viewpoint about parenting
D
For most, the sound of rain hitting rooftops is just noise, and the droplets are simply water to be channeled (分流) away. However, a team of researchers at UNIST, led by Young-Bin Park, has found a way to turn the energy of falling raindrops into a power source.
To collect the energy, the researchers turned to carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (聚合物), known as CFRP, which can both stand the natural elements and move electricity. It is incredibly lightweight, yet stronger than many metals. Using it as the foundation for their droplet-based electricity generator, or DEC, they created a device called the S-FRP-DEC.
Falling through the atmosphere, each raindrop typically carries a positive charge. The surface of the S-FRP-DEG, however, is engineered to be negatively charged. When a raindrop a transfer of charges occurs. To make this process efficient, they applied a lotus-leaf-inspired coating to the device. As a droplet strikes, it spreads out and rolls away instantly. This quick motion is what drives an electric current through the carbon fibers. This way, the mechanical energy of the falling rain is translated into electricity.
Through laboratory tests, the researchers found that a single raindrop — measuring roughly 92 microliters in volume — was capable of generating a surprising 60 volts of electricity. They proved its scalability by connecting four of these generator units in series, whose combined power can briefly illuminate 144 LED lights. When testing it on real-world rooftops, they discovered the S-FPR-DEC could act as a sensor to autonomously distinguish between a drizzle and a storm. When a storm hits, these signals can be used to automatically activate drainage pumps (排水泵) without needing any external electricity or batteries.
Park suggests that this technology could one day be integrated into mobility systems. Imagine a car or a plane that harvests energy from the rain it passes through. By turning rain into a source of power, this research provides a sustainable, and autonomous way to protect our cities and keep our technology running, even in the middle of a storm.
32. Why did the researchers choose CFRP to capture energy?
A. It is light and cost-effective. B. It is durable and conductive.
C. It is sustainable and heat-absorbing. D. It is stretchable and environmental-friendly.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The surface engineering. B. The design inspiration.
C. The working principle. D. The functional instructions.
34. How can the device help fight floods?
A. It can collect falling rainwater.
B. It can be a self-powered rain sensor.
C. It can be an automatic drainage system.
D. It can transport electricity to the LED lights.
35. What is Park’s suggestion about the invention?
A. Update self-driving B. Make cities free of storms.
C. Improve road facilities. D. Apply it to vehicles system.

Productivity can be a struggle for many of us. It can be easy to feel upset with overflowing email inboxes, housework, social responsibilities. 36 Write it down, do the tasks and cross them off!
According to the psychologist David Cohen, there are three key reasons why lists are beneficial. Firstly, they help to drown out the disorder and anxiety that comes with having never-ending tasks. By writing everything down, we don’t have to rely on our memory and can instead focus on the task at hand. 37 Secondly, lists provide structure and guidance, giving us a plan to follow. As well as this, our brains are more likely to keep information that is presented in a structured and organized manner. 38 . They act as proof of what we have achieved, which can help boost our sense of accomplishment (成就) and motivation. Seeing our progress on paper can be a great motivator to keep going and finish more tasks.
Another possible reason why our brains love lists is something called the “Zeigarnik Effect”. This is the name psychologists use for when we remember things we need to do, our unfinished tasks, better than things we have already completed. Researchers from Wake Forest University tested the interference (干扰) of the Zeigarnik effect on a group of people. The researchers concluded that the group permitted to plan had reduced anxiety and performed better in the next task. 39
In conclusion, the to-do list is an invaluable tool for managing our daily lives. 40 It just might be the key to unlocking your full potential.
A. Finally, lists give us the psychological boost as well.
B. Instead, we can check our lists to remind us of what’s next.
C. This not only helps us stay organized but also reduces mental stress.
D. Nevertheless, making a to-do list is not always a straightforward process.
E. However, one simple tool that can help us stay on top of everything is the to-do list.
F. The next time you feel overburdened, grab a pen and paper, and start making your list.
G. This finding highlights the importance of completing tasks and crossing them off our lists.

Like most teenagers growing up in the digital age, I relied on my phone for photos — quick snaps (快照) that were 41 but rarely revisited. My profile on Instagram was a polished collection of such photos intended to 42 my peers (同龄人).
The transition from sharing images to 43 memories for myself wasn’t immediate. It began with a simple 44 : flipping (翻) through family photo albums. I was attracted by the images from my family’s 45 . They weren’t polished, but they held stories that words often couldn’t 46 — of birthdays, ceremonies and family portraits. In those photographs, I saw 47 . I realized that every image was a piece of something 48 : a history that had been passed down.
It was this 49 that led me to pick up my film camera. With just 36 exposures per roll, each photo required 50 , a slowing down to see the world around me. I now take photos of the things that matter most: friends’ weddings, holidays and small moments of joy. If a picture didn’t turn out as I had hoped, it didn’t matter. The 51 became part of the story. They weren’t meant for 52 or comments — they were meant for me, for family and friends.
There’s a sense of 53 when I finally open an envelope of developed prints. I’m 54 back to those moments. And in that sense, my 55 to film photography feels like a desire to regain the permanence (永恒) and closeness that comes with holding a memory in your hands.

W: Some of us weren't happy at first, but everyone is on board now. Personally, I was a big fan of the idea from the start.
M: Really?
W: Yeah. In fact, I thought about volunteering before, but it wasn’t easy to fit it in around school time and my weekend job. Now I get to leave school early every Thursday to go to the animal shelter.
M: That’s so cool. Do your friends work there with you?
W: No, we all do different things. Sarah volunteers at a retirement home. Dan works with disabled kids and Mike works a shift at a food bank every Friday morning.

【原文】Is everybody on board? Great! Please take your seats and let’s get going. I won’t talk for long, as our destination is only a twenty-minute bus ride from our hotel here in central Stockholm. Today we’re visiting Skansen, the world’s oldest open-air museum as a living museum provides us with a picture of ordinary Swedish life before the industrial age. The site features over one hundred fifty historical buildings brought to the museum from all over the country. Activities take place each day in both Swedish and English. They are given by actors in traditional costumes, which really brings the history to life. Skansen is the world’s only open-air museum with wild animals and the Nordic zoo features many types of local wildlife, such as deer and bears. There’s also a children’s zoo. The Skansen aquarium also has fish, plus many other creatures such as snakes, insects and monkeys. Unfortunately, this isn’t included in our entry price, but adult tickets cost just one hundred sixty kronor, about twenty of your Canadian dollars.

第七部分 书面表达
正方(不抵制AI)
Should we fight AI?
Dear judges and fellow students,
Good morning. I am Li Hua. I firmly believe that we should not fight artificial intelligence.
As a powerful modern technology, AI brings enormous benefits to our study and daily life. It provides rich learning materials, helps us analyze difficult knowledge and practise oral English, which greatly improves our learning efficiency. Besides, AI also promotes development in medicine, environmental protection and other important fields. In fact, it is not AI itself but people's improper use of it that causes problems. As long as we use AI wisely and avoid over-reliance, it will never affect our independent thinking.
In conclusion, new technology should be accepted rather than refused. We ought to make the best of AI to serve us better.
Thank you!
反方(抵制滥用AI)
Should we fight AI?
Dear judges and fellow students,
Good morning. I am Li Hua. I strongly hold the view that we should fight the abuse of artificial intelligence.
Nowadays, more and more students rely heavily on AI to finish homework and write articles. This not only makes us lazy but also weakens our ability to think independently. Moreover, AI may provide inaccurate information and even threaten our personal privacy.Although AI brings convenience, its disadvantages cannot be ignored. As teenagers, we are easily influenced and fail to use AI in a proper way.
In short, to develop good learning habits and improve our own abilities, we should resist the uncontrolled use of AI in our study and life.
Thank you!
