Not long ago, I noticed a quiet revolution taking place on the streets of Shanghai. It wasn’t in the grand malls or busy offices, but in small handicraft stores. Young and old alike bent over tables, carefully placing tiny colorful beads (珠子) on plastic boards. This simple activity, known as fuse-bead art, has quietly become a national trend.
It all starts with focus. Take 11-year-old William, a visitor from the UK. After a piano competition, he walked past a DIY store and was instantly attracted. For two days, he worked patiently there to create a beautiful peach tree, a symbol of Chinese culture that inspires his passion, and took it home. For him, it was a labor of love. For adults, it is a lifeline. Many busy professionals, worn out by endless work messages and screen time, find peace in these beads. As one customer described, putting away the phone and focusing solely on arranging the beads brings a rare sense of joy and peace. It is a chance to simply be in the moment.
Fuse-bead art dates back to the 1970s, when it was not originally intended for personal enjoyment, but for rehabilitation (康复) training in nursing homes. In the 1980s, Perler, in the United States, improved it into a children’s puzzle toy, which later spread worldwide. At the end of 2024, a young Chinese actor showcased a homemade fuse-bead tie during a live promotional broadcast, thus fueling the “fuse-bead craze” in China.
Experts explain that fuse-bead art perfectly meets young people’s needs. It is easy to do, requiring no special skills. The slow, focused work helps us escape our phones and relieve stress. However, like all trends, it faces challenges. To last, the “handmade economy” must keep innovating and creating new content. But one thing is clear: As long as people seek comfort, creativity, and a break from chaos, handmade crafts like fuse beads will remain more than just a passing craze.
4. Why does the author describe the scene in Shanghai?
A. To introduce a new mall. B. To present a new trend.
C. To show the busy streets. D. To explain the beads’ appeal.
5. What does William’s choice of the peach tree pattern indicate?
A. An intention to help the DIY store. B. A need to reduce academic pressure.
C. A preference for piano competitions. D. A strong interest in Chinese culture.
6. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The evolution of fuse-bead art. B. The popularity of a Chinese actor.
C. The function of a new puzzle toy. D. The way of nursing home training.
7. What challenge does fuse-bead art face?
A. Expanding the market. B. Staying creative.
C. Getting recognized. D. Gaining profits.

The Bloomberg Initiative for Cycling Infrastructure (BICI) is open for global applications, helping cities build safer, higher-quality cycling networks for all ages and social groups. It cuts vehicle emissions, eases road pressure and boosts fitness, bringing solid social and environmental benefits.
Nevertheless, large-scale promotion of such infrastructure (基础设施) has caused heated debates. Critics say this one-size-fits-all approach overlooks real local situations and may cause unexpected downsides. Meanwhile, many mistakenly believe the unified design can greatly cut construction spending and expand space for motor vehicle lanes (车道).
BICI provides cities with financial aid and expert technical support via field surveys, custom road design and staff training. Brazil’s Fortaleza has proved the project’s advantages: Within a year, its daily cycling population rose by 27%, cycling-related accidents dropped by 40%, and roadside businesses gained more customers. However, urban researchers call into question the blind promotion of such cycling projects and offer practical adjustments. They argue copying the high-standard lane separation model wastes resources for low-traffic small-medium cities. Over-divided road space narrows driving lanes and leads to worse rush-hour traffic.
Resource distribution is another controversial issue. BICI states it prioritizes resource-limited small and mid-sized cities, yet funds and technical resources tend to flow to cities with sound basic conditions, creating unfair support gaps.
BICI’s core value is pushing cities to shift from vehicle-centered to people-centered road planning. Green travel is an irresistible trend amid global warming and heavy traffic. Cities must balance environmental gains, traffic efficiency and local demands. So cycling infrastructure matters more for localized adaptation than blind universal replication. Only reasonable customization can help projects like BICI avoid orthodox emulation and achieve sustainable urban development.
Dr. Vega, a senior transportation specialist who has participated in dozens of global cycling programs, shares her view in an interview, “Beyond tailored designs, successful green infrastructure essentially reshapes public travel awareness in the long run, which outweighs its immediate traffic improvement effects.”
8. What is the primary concern regarding BICI’s universal model?
A. Narrowing of motor lanes. B. High construction spending.
C. Lack of local adaptability. D. Limited technical guidance.
9. What did Fortaleza benefit from the BICI project?
A. Better rush-hour traffic flow. B. The largest cycling network.
C. Improvement of cycling safety. D. Transformation of local businesses.
10. What does the underlined phrase “orthodox emulation” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Mechanical uniform copying. B. Short-sighted urban evaluation.
C. Thin environmental awareness. D. One-sided localized adjustment.
11. What deserves top priority according to Dr. Vega?
A. Unified global models. B. Underdeveloped cities.
C. Immediate traffic gains. D. Long-term awareness shifts.

Deep underground, a researcher’s voice breaks thousands of years of silence. As he sings, the cave answers back with a low, strange echo (回音). Then he follows the sound, until his headlamp falls upon ancient paintings. This experiment, performed decades ago, led to a remarkable discovery: Prehistoric rock art was meant to be heard as well as seen.
The first to explore this was French musicologist Reznikoff. Counting the seconds between echoes, he found a link between rock art placement and acoustic (声音的) phenomena. His methods of talking to the walls lacked precision, however, and archaeologists largely ignored his conclusions. But his ideas survived on the edges of academia, where the emerging field of archaeoacoustics was struggling for recognition.
Later, Rupert Till adopted a measurement called impulse response, which qualifies how sound waves move through a space when a short, sharp sound is played to give a so-called acoustic fingerprint. After hundreds of samples inside caves, both next to rock art and where there was no rock art, Till’s team proved a statistical relationship between the likelihood of there being a piece of rock art and an “unusual” acoustic phenomenon that was associated with it.
In 2018, Díaz-Andreu, a Spanish archaeologist, launched the Artsoundscapes project, introducing cutting-edge tools to systematically measure acoustic phenomena at painted sites worldwide. The project leaves little doubt that prehistoric artists deliberately painted in places where echoes and sound transmission created other-worldly acoustic effects. By studying the unusual soundscapes, researchers reconstruct the ways in which these ancient, multisensory illustrations increased the power of prehistoric traditions, storytelling and musical performance — and, perhaps, even changed listeners’ states of consciousness.
More broadly, these findings underline the importance of integrating sound into archaeology and archaeoacoustics is finally gaining mainstream acceptance. “I’m arguing for the preservation of the sound, because there are examples where they’ve built a visitor center or restrooms near rock art and they’re unintentionally ruining the acoustics,” Díaz-Andreu says. “I’m trying to spread the word, to preserve the soundscapes.”
12. Why did the researcher sing in the cave?
A. To detect hidden cave art. B. To explore the lost cave.
C. To break the long silence. D. To answer an unusual echo.
13. How did many archaeologists view Reznikoff’s study?
A. They praised its creativity. B. They improved his methods.
C. They examined it as evidence. D. They dismissed it as inaccurate.
14. What can we learn about Till’s method?
A. He tested longer echoes. B. He employed statistical proof.
C. He centered on painted caves. D. He took various measurements.
15. What would Díaz-Andreu probably advocate?
A. Recreating the rock art in the museum. B. Separating sound from rock art studies.
C. Removing visitor centers from painted caves. D. Using music to influence listeners’ perceptions.

In 2024, my close friend Josh was going through an extremely tough time. He had suddenly lost his job and was struggling badly with rent, facing the terrifying possibility of being evicted (驱逐). Deeply worried about his situation, I made up my mind to offer whatever help I could. Though I was living from hand to mouth myself, I managed to save up two hundred dollars by cutting down my daily expenses for months, which I planned to send to him as soon as possible.
Josh preferred to receive money through an online payment app I had never used before. As a person who was not good with digital tools at all, I felt nervous just opening the app. In a great hurry to get the money to him, I typed in his first name without double-checking the account information. Unfortunately, I accidentally transferred the money to a complete stranger who shared exactly the same first name as my friend. The moment I realized my mistake, my blood ran cold.
Standing there helplessly, I felt like the biggest fool in the world. I was so anxious that my hands shook violently, and my eyes were filled with tears of regret. To make matters worse, that two hundred dollars was my entire emergency fund. Having lost it all in a single careless click made me feel completely hopeless. I blamed myself endlessly, thinking how my friend was desperately counting on me and how I had let him down.
I gathered all my courage and sent a message to the wrong Josh, explaining the whole incident politely and begging him to return the money. Honestly, I was unwilling to reach out. I couldn’t help imagining him laughing at my careless mistake, thinking I was so stupid as to ask for such a large sum back. I stared at the phone screen, my heart filled with worry and sadness, not knowing what to do next.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

B 5. D 6. A 7. B

根据第一段“Not long ago, I noticed a quiet revolution taking place on the streets of Shanghai…This simple activity, known as fuse-bead art, has quietly become a national trend.(不久前,我注意到上海街头正发生一场悄然的变革……这种被称为拼豆艺术的简单活动,已悄然成为一种全国性的趋势。)”可知,作者描述上海街头人们玩拼豆的场景,是为了引出并介绍拼豆这一新的流行趋势。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“For two days, he worked patiently there to create a beautiful peach tree, a symbol of Chinese culture that inspires his passion, and took it home.(他耐心花两天制作漂亮桃树,桃树是中国文化的象征,激发了他的热爱,并把作品带回家。)”
根据第三段“Fuse-bead art dates back to the 1970s, when it was not originally intended for personal enjoyment, but for rehabilitation (康复) training in nursing homes. In the 1980s, Perler, in the United States, improved it into a children’s puzzle toy, which later spread worldwide. At the end of 2024, a young Chinese actor showcased a homemade fuse-bead tie during a live promotional broadcast, thus fueling the “fuse-bead craze” in China.(拼豆艺术起源于20世纪70年代,最初它并非用于个人娱乐,而是供养老院开展康复训练使用。

C 9. C 10. A 11. D
根据第二段“Critics say this one-size-fits-all approach overlooks real local situations and may cause unexpected downsides.(批评者称这种一刀切的方式忽视当地真实情况,并可能带来意料之外的弊端)”可知,BICI通用模式最主要的问题是缺少地方适应性。
根据第三段“Brazil’s Fortaleza has proved the project’s advantages: Within a year, its daily cycling population rose by 27%, cycling-related accidents dropped by 40%, and roadside businesses gained more customers.(巴西的福塔莱萨印证了该项目的优势:一年之内,日常骑行人数增长 27%,骑行相关事故下降 40%,沿街商铺迎来更多顾客)”可知,福塔莱萨的骑行事故减少,骑行安全性得到提升。
根据第五段“So cycling infrastructure matters more for localized adaptation than blind universal replication. Only reasonable customization can help projects like BICI avoid orthodox emulation and achieve sustainable urban development.(所以骑行基础设施建设更重要的是本土化适配,而非盲目地全域复刻。只有合理因地制宜,才能让 BICI 这类项目避免orthodox emulation,实现城市可持续发展)”可知,所以骑行基础设施建设更重要的是本土化适配,而非盲目地全域复刻,即避免机械地统一照搬。故划线词orthodox emulation指机械地统一照搬。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Beyond tailored designs, successful green infrastructure essentially reshapes public travel awareness in the long run, which outweighs its immediate traffic improvement effects.(除定制化设计外,成功的绿色基础设施本质上会从长远重塑公众出行意识,这一点比即时的交通改善效果更为重要)”可知,Vega博士认为长期观念转变是重中之重。
D
A 13. D 14. B 15. C

根据第二段中“His methods of talking to the walls lacked precision, however, and archaeologists largely ignored his conclusions.(然而,他“与墙对话”的方法缺乏精确性,考古学家们基本上忽视了他的结论)”可知,许多考古学家认为Reznikoff的研究不够精确,因而忽视了他的结论。
根据第三段中“After hundreds of samples inside caves, both next to rock art and where there was no rock art, Till’s team proved a statistical relationship between the likelihood of there being a piece of rock art and an “unusual” acoustic phenomenon that was associated with it. (在洞穴内采集了数百个样本,这些样本有的取自岩画旁边,有的取自没有岩画的地方。之后,Till的团队证明了存在一块岩画的可能性与一种与之相关的“不寻常”声学现象之间存在统计关系)”可知,Till的方法采用了统计证明。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中““I’m arguing for the preservation of the sound, because there are examples where they’ve built a visitor center or restrooms near rock art and they’re unintentionally ruining the acoustics,” Díaz-Andreu says.

时间状语Over decades是现在完成时的标志,主语the park是单数,with its surrounding areas是插入的伴随状语,不影响主谓一致,助动词用has。

My Tiny Trick for a Brighter Day
When stress clouds my mind, my tiny trick is a five-minute “gratitude walk”. I step outside, breathe deeply, and name three small things I’m thankful for — the warm sun, a friend’s smile, and even a good cup of milk tea. I usually do this during my lunch break, away from the noisy classroom and endless textbooks.
This simple habit shifts my focus from worries to blessings. I feel lighter, calmer, and more connected to the present. It doesn’t solve big problems, but it lights a spark of hope. Sometimes, a brighter day begins with just one mindful moment.

Fortunately, his reply came almost instantly. Instead of ignoring me, he typed, “I understand. Sending it back now.” Within seconds, a notification showed that the 200 dollars had been safely returned. I leaned back in my chair with a heavy sigh, finally feeling at peace. Deeply moved by the unexpected kindness of a stranger, I quickly sent a message to thank him for his honesty and warmth. Then, without wasting any time, I immediately forwarded the exact amount of money to my friend Josh.
When my friend called to say thanks, I told him about the “other Josh”. He was equally touched by the stranger’s kindness over the phone, telling me that he now truly believed there were still good people in this world. He even joked about sending a thank-you note to the “other Josh”. Smiling, I replied that it wasn’t just a joke; maybe we should really get to know this good person. Sometimes, a simple act of honesty can light up the darkest corners of our lives.
