In 1916, two girls of wealthy families, best friends from Auburn, N. Y. — Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood — traveled to a settlement in the Rocky Mountains to teach in a one-room schoolhouse. The girls had gone to Smith College. They wore expensive clothes. So for them to move to Elkhead, Colo. to instruct the children whose shoes were held together with string was a surprise. Their stay in Elkhead is the subject of Nothing Daunted: The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West by Dorothy Wickenden, who is a magazine editor and Dorothy Woodruff’s granddaughter.
Why did they go then? Well, they wanted to do something useful. Soon, however, they realized what they had undertaken.
They moved in with a local family, the Harrisons, and, like them, had little privacy (隐私), rare baths, and a blanket of snow on their quilt when they woke up in the morning. Some mornings, Rosamond and Dorothy would arrive at the schoolhouse to find the children weeping from the cold. In spring, the snow was replaced by mud over ice.
In Wickenden’s book, she expanded on the history of the West and also on feminism (女权), which of course influenced the girls’ decision to go to Elkhead. A hair-raising section concerns the building of the railroads, which entailed (牵涉) drilling through the Rockies, often in blinding snowstorms. The book ends with Rosamond and Dorothy’s return to Auburn.
Wickenden is a very good storyteller. The sweep of the land and the stoicism (坚忍) of the people move her to some beautiful writing. Here is a picture of Dorothy Woodruff, on her horse, looking down from a hill top: “When the sun slipped behind the mountains, it shed a rosy glow all around them. Then a full moon rose. The snow was marked only by small animals: foxes, coyotes, mice, and varying hares, which turned white in the winter.”
24. Why did Dorothy and Rosamond go to the Rocky Mountains?
A. To teach in a school. B. To study American history.
C. To write a book. D. To do sightseeing.
25. What can we learn about the girls from paragraph 3?
A. They enjoyed much respect.
B. They had a room with a bathtub.
C. They lived with the local kids.
D. They suffered severe hardships.
26. Which part of Wickenden’s writing is hair-raising?
A. The extreme climate of Auburn. B. The living conditions in Elkhead.
C. The railroad building in the Rockies. D. The natural beauty of the West.
27. What is the text?
A. A news report. B. A book review.
C. A children’s story. D. A diary entry.

Efforts were underway in Bangladesh to deliver food and drinking water to millions of people struggling after a heavy rain led to flooding, which hit a quarter of the country. There are around 3.5 million Bangladeshis at risk of river flooding every year according to a 2015 report by the World Bank.
On Wednesday, at least 17 of the country’s 64 districts (地区), mostly in the northern and north-eastern Sylhet, were suffering from the natural disaster. Government officials said at least 36 people had been killed and about 4.5 million people stuck so far. The floods also caused damage to agriculture (农业), electricity, and clean water supply.
Sylhet is among the worst affected, with several areas without electricity. “Many people are in great need of food and drinking water,” said Enam Ahmed, 45, living in the worst-hit Sunmaganj district. “There is water everywhere but no drinking water. Flood shelters are filled with people but they are not getting enough food,” he said.
The situation in Bangladesh has been worsened by rain water falling down from the surrounding hills of India’s Meghalaya state, which received more than 970 mm (38 inches) of rain on Sunday, according to a government report.
“The flood situation in the three Barak valley districts continues to be very serious. Army rescuers have evacuated thousands of trapped people to safe places. 14 rescue teams with more than 70 boats and over 400 men have been pressed into action in the heavily flooded districts,” said a local flood control official. About 5.5 million people have been displaced, about 3.7 million of whom are staying in government-run temporary (临时的) shelters on higher ground.
Locals in the flood-affected areas said they had never seen such serious floods before.
28. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The role played by government officials.
B. The people trapped in the disaster.
C. The number of districts in the country.
D. The damage caused by the floods.
29. What do we know about the flood shelters?
A. There is a crying need for food.
B. They can provide enough clean water.
C. They are too old to hold people.
D. There are few villagers staying inside.
30. What does the underlined word “displaced” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. called on B. checked out C. moved away D. sent in
31. What can we infer from the text?
A. More rescue efforts are needed. B. The floods hit the whole country.
C. The disaster is the biggest ever. D. Rivers nationwide are at risk.
D
Schoolchildren spend most of their time surrounded by their peers (同龄人). They spend a lot more time with classmates, teammates and fellow club members than with adults in their lives. Peer pressure can have a huge influence on the lives of children in grades two through twelve.
From birth through age six, the family shapes a child’s sense of identity (个性). Parents and brothers and sisters affect a child’s likes, dislikes, tastes in clothing, food and music and, perhaps most importantly, values. Once children enter school, they form connections to the larger group of their peers. This group brings new ideas and experiences. Peer pressure happens when a student’s actions are influenced by this group. The “pressure” happens when peers suggest or demand actions different from the child’s normal behavior and values.
Peer pressure leads to some disturbing negative behavior in schoolchildren. In the USA, about 75% of high school students have tried alcohol (酒) offered by their friends in middle or high school. According to a survey, students felt pressured by their peers between 35% and 49% of the time. The power of peer pressure can result from a schoolchild’s growing desire (渴望) to fit into a group.
Thankfully, peer pressure can also be positive. For example, wanting to join an athletic group of friends may force a student who has been sitting for a long time to try out for the soccer team. In a survey on peer pressure, 51% of teenagers felt that peer pressure was sometimes positive. One teenager responded, “Sometimes it can help you gain confidence.” Other examples of positive peer pressure include students encouraging a classmate to run for school president, or friends suggesting that a talented peer try out for a talent show.
32. What leads to schoolchildren’s peer pressure?
A. The identity shaped by their family.
B. The connections with their classmates.
C. The childhood experiences with their friends.
D. The differences in their behavior and values.
33. Why do some schoolchildren behave negatively under peer pressure?
A. To kill their boring time. B. To fit into a peer group.
C. To help gain confidence. D. To improve social skills.
34. What does the author think of peer pressure?
A. Peer pressure does more harm than good.
B. Peer pressure is very good for schoolchildren’s growth.
C. Peer pressure is not necessarily bad for school children.
D. Peer pressure plays an important role in shaping a child’s values.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Why Schoolchildren Turn out the Way They Do
B. Ways to Help Schoolchildren Deal with Peer Pressure
C. Peer Pressure Highly Influences Schoolchildren
D. How to Improve Schoolchildren’s Behavior and Values

I grew up in a small town where the primary school was a ten-minute walk from my house. When the noon bell rang, I would race breathlessly home. My mother would be standing at the top of the stairs, smiling down at me.
One lunchtime when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed (排练) my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped on stage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator (旁白员,叙述者)’s part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her words, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine (藤蔓) was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass in bunch, as if a painter had touched our landscape with gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful — even dandelions.”
My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?” She asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.” Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled.

作文1
Stand Up and Exercise, Everybody!
Everybody! Are you tired of sitting in class all day? How about adding some physical activity into your daily routine? One great option is the “Stand Up and Stretch” exercise. This simple routine involves standing up from our desk, stretching arms, legs and back, and taking a few deep breaths. This exercise is recommended for several reasons.
First of all, it is a fantastic way to keep fit, giving us good upper and lower body strength and strengthening our immune system. Secondly, with more blood and oxygen flowing in your body, it can improve our focus and concentration, making it easier to stay focused in class. Last but not least, working out for just 5-10 minutes can not only cheer us up, but also provide relief from stress and tension. It indeed promotes a healthy and active lifestyle, which is essential for our overall well-being.
It’s time to stand up and stretch! It’s a small change that can make a big difference to our daily life.
Stand Up and Exercise, Everybody!
With the trend of ignoring outdoor activities, students are increasingly preferring to stay indoors, unwilling to exercise. Considering this, I’d like to recommend a simple exercise – long rope jumping.
Long rope jumping offers unparalleled benefits. It’s easy to learn and doesn’t take up too much time, making it an ideal workout between classes. Moreover, this activity is fun and exciting for students of all ages. Not only does it enhance our physical well-being, but it also fosters a sense of teamwork.
From my perspective, long rope jumping is an excellent choice for students who want to stay fit while enjoying themselves. So, waster no more time and get moving. You will definitely fall in love with it!
作文2
Paragraph 1
“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, encouraging and comforting me as usual. “You just haven’t been ready for the stage performance.” Seeing the sadness on my face soften a little, she added, “Why not take the narrator’s part as an opportunity to be familiar with the stage?” Her encouragement calmed me down gradually, and I began to accept the narrator’s part was of vital significance. Soon it was the big day. At first I was still nervous, but then I found a dandelion in my pocket. I knew my mom passed the flower to me, hoping it would be my lucky charm.
Paragraph 2
After the play, I took home the flower. Mom carefully gazed at the dandelion, gently pressed it into the dictionary and grinned happily at me. “We were perhaps the only people who would press such a sorry-looking weed.” Though decades have passed, I often recall our walk in the yard. Her smile and her words of wisdom have stayed with me and shaped me into who I am now! And this is perhaps the best gift that I’ve ever received in my life.

听力原文
W: Excuse me, sir, but can I take the No.6 bus here?
M: Yes, madam. May I ask where you’re going?
W: The Lakeside Hotel.
M: Oh, you have to go across the street and take the No.6 bus over there.
M: Come on, Ann. We’ve only got five minutes to go.
W: But I’ve got to clean the manager’s room.
M: Why not ask Susan to do it?
W: Yes, she’s the right person.
M: Where did you get those cool shoes? I want to buy one pair for my aunt.
W: My sister gave them to me. She has great taste in clothes. And she gives me all her old things. I seldom go to the department store.
W: I signed up for a new course at a university on the other side of the country.
M: But you’re still in high school. How can you attend a university course?
W: It’ll be over online video conferences. I’ll take this course from home.
W: It must be 30 years since we saw each other.
M: Yes. Do you remember how we used to spend all day climbing trees and playing football?
W: Yes. My husband and my son laughed when I told them that.
M: Are you involved in anything on campus besides studying?
W: Well, I’m on the school band, and I work for the school magazine.
M: Wow, they certainly keep your hands tied. You’ve already had a busy core schedule.
W: Yeah, I also got involved in sports, and my spare time is almost used up. Anyway, I’m trying to focus on matters required by my core schedules.
M: I guess so. Why not relax yourself a little bit? Say, the drama club will put on a show tonight. The play is written by some graduates this year. Are you interested?
W: Sounds interesting. I haven’t been to such performances for a while.
W: Excuse me, could you tell me when the next plane to London leaves? I am going there to attend a conference, but I would like to meet some guests beforehand.
M: Let me see. The next one leaves in twenty minutes, at eleven o’clock.
W: How much is a business class ticket, please?
M: We have only first class tickets left.
W: OK, I’d like one for the next flight.
M: I’m sorry, but I don’t sell tickets. You can get one from the machine over there or buy one from the ticket sellers in the hall.
W: All right. By the way, what’s the gate number of the flight?
M: The plane will depart from Gate Four.
W: Thanks a lot.
W: I’m excited to announce that we’re forming a new team! The team will create a new app for our customers, to provide a more convenient user experience.
M: Is this going to influence our jobs? Will some of us be out of work?
W: No. No one is being replaced.
M: Who will be part of this team?
W: We’ll pick five people who have a mix of skills, like design, computing, and marketing.
M: How can we join?
W: If you’re interested, send me an email by Friday, telling me why you’d be a good fit.
M: Will the team only work in the office?
W: You need to work in the office for at least three days a week, and you can choose to work from home or in the office for the rest.
M: Do we have to interview for the team? Interviews make me quite anxious.
W: You will have to attend an interview, but don’t worry about it.
W: OK, here we are: the Kremlin and Red Square!
M: Excuse me, but what is the Kremlin exactly?
W: The Kremlin is a special government area. It’s where the president lives, too.
M: Wow...a little bit like the Palace Museum in Beijing.
W: Yes. I guess you could say that. The Kremlin was actually built around the same time, between the 14th and 17th centuries.
M: What’s that building over there, with the colourful round towers? I’ve seen so many photos of it. It looks so pretty, like a flame!
W: That’s Saint Basil’s Cathedral. People all over the world think of Russia when they see it. It’s like the Great Wall in China, a symbol of the country.
M: Forgive me for asking, but can you tell me more about Red Square?
W: Well, it’s considered the centre of Moscow, and there have been many important events held here. It is also a place for music concerts. But it used to be a marketplace a long time ago.
M: Oh, really? How amazing!
M: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to our school. My name is Andrew Brown. I’m a history teacher. I’ll give you a quick introduction to the school before I show you around. Our school is called a “free school”. This means that the pupils are free to choose what and how they want to learn.
The school opens at 9:00 am, but the children can arrive whenever they like. Most of them are in school by 10:00.
If you look through the door of that big room, you’ll see those children reading and drawing there. Four of the older boys are now on their way to the Car-room to have their driving lessons. Several children are taking turns in the kitchen to help Miss Cabe with lunch. They all enjoy doing this. After lunch it’s someone else’s job to do the washing-up. This job is unpopular. After lunch the children go on with what they’ve been doing until 4:30. On Mondays and Thursdays the school is open in the evening until 9:00 pm.
