How do we know how people lived thousands of years ago? Written records are useful, but many ancient cultures had no writing. For those cultures, we need archaeologists. / Archaeologists dig at ancient sites. They work slowly and carefully, because every small object is important. They use tools such as brushes and small knives, not big machines. When they find something, they take photos and write down its exact position. / After the digging, the real work begins. Scientists clean the objects and study them in the lab. They can find out what people ate, what tools they used and how they built their houses. / To learn the age of an object, scientists often use carbon dating. This method looks at the carbon inside bones, wood and cloth. It can tell us how old they are, sometimes to within a few hundred years. / Archaeologists also compare their findings with written records and with objects from other places. There are also horses and chariots(战车). / The army was made more than 2,200 years ago for the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang.
