W: Today I’ll talk about a great artist, Leonardo da Vinci. He was born in 1452 in the town of Vinci, near Florence, Italy. At 15 Leonardo went to work with a famous artist. At the age of 20 he was already a master painter. Although da Vinci was a great painter, he never gave up his interest in other subjects. For example, he drew a flying machine 400 years before the airplane was invented. In all, da Vinci designed more than 1000 inventions. As a matter of fact, da Vinci started many projects that he never finished. He was always more interested in planning projects than doing them. He often quickly lost interest in one project and couldn’t wait to start another. So, he completed very few paintings. Da Vinci took four years to paint the Mona Lisa. Unfortunately, the man who ordered the painting didn’t like it and refused to pay him. However, 10 years later, da Vinci sold it to the king of France. The king hung it in the Louvre palace in Paris. Today, the Mona Lisa still hangs in the Louvre, which is now a museum.

Crowded by defenders, Charlie Villanueva, one hand lifting the ball high, jumps toward the basket. For a moment, he seems to hang in the air. Then, he pushes the ball down through the basket — a slam dunk (扣篮)! His career may look like a slam dunk, being a national champion at the University of Connecticut, and setting beginner records with the Toronto Raptors.
However, life wasn’t always easy for him. His success comes not only from his basketball skills but also from how he dealt with a skin disease. It happens when the body’s immune system goes wrong and attacks its own hair-growing cells. Charlie was affected at age 10 and lost all his hair by age 12. This made him a target for bullying (霸凌), leading him to keep away from others and hide under caps and hoods.
With the support of his mother, Charlie found protection in basketball. He turned his depression and stress into motivation, improving his skills to the point where his talent became more important than his condition. The bullying stopped, and his basketball career took off.
All along the way, Charlie has continuously applied himself to helping others. Ever since his first year as a new player, he has served as a spokesperson for the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, and went on to set up the Charlie Villanueva Foundation, an organization aimed at supporting families with children suffering from skin diseases and stopping all forms of bullying. As the son of immigrants from the Dominican Republic, he has even worked towards ending poverty in that country.
Charlie encourages young people to accept their individuality and have confidence in themselves. “We’re all unique in our own ways,” he says, encouraging them to remember that with great efforts and self-belief, any dream is within reach.
24.Why is Charlie’s slam dunk mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.To compare him with other champions.
B.To explain how a slam dunk is performed.
C.To highlight his skills and achievements.
D.To show a specific moment in a game.
25.What made Charlie avoid his classmates?
A.A skin disease. B.His being made fun of.
C.An error in the immune system. D.His average ability to play basketball.
26.Which of the following best describes Charlie?
A.Strong-willed and helpful. B.Strict and responsible.
C.Warm-hearted and humorous. D.Independent and creative.
27.What message does the author want to express in the text?
A.Luck often comes to those who are ready.
B.Actions speak louder than words.
C.A thousand-mile journey begins with the first step.
D.What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
【答案】24.C 25.B 26.A 27.D
根据第一段“Crowded by defenders, Charlie Villanueva, one hand lifting the ball high, jumps toward the basket. For a moment, he seems to hang in the air. Then, he pushes the ball down through the basket — a slam dunk (扣篮)! His career may look like a slam dunk, being a national champion at the University of Connecticut, and setting beginner records with the Toronto Raptors
根据第二段“Charlie was affected at age 10 and lost all his hair by age 12. This made him a target for bullying (霸凌), leading him to keep away from others and hide under caps and hoods (查理10岁时患上这种病,12岁时头发全部掉光。
故选A。
C
Ireland has had a very difficult history. The problems started in the 16th century when English rulers tried to conquer Ireland. For hundreds of years, the Irish people fought against the English. Finally, in 1921, the British government was forced to give independence to the south of Ireland. The result is that today there are two “Irelands”. Northern Ireland, in the north, is part of the United Kingdom. The Republic of Ireland, in the south, is an independent country.
In the 1840s the main crop, potatoes, was affected by disease and about 750,000 people died of hunger. This, and a shortage of work, forced many people to leave Ireland and live in the USA, the UK, Australia and Canada. As a result of these problems, the population fell from 8.2 million in 1841 to 6.6 million in 1851.
For many years, the majority (多数) of Irish people earned their living as farmers. Today, many people still work on the land but more and more people are moving to the cities to work in factories and offices. Life in the cities is very different from life in the countryside, where things move at a quieter and slower pace.
The Irish are famous for being warm-hearted and friendly. Oscar Wilde, a famous Irish writer, once said that the Irish were “the greatest talkers since the Greeks”. Since independence, Ireland has revived its own culture of music, language, literature and singing. Different areas have different styles of old Irish songs which are sung without instruments. Other kinds of Irish music use many different instruments such as the violin, whistles, etc.
28.What does the author tell us in paragraph 1?
A.How Ireland gained independence. B.How two “Irelands” came into being.
C.How the Irish fought against the English. D.How English rulers tried to conquer Ireland.
29.We can learn from the text that in Ireland ______.
A.food shortages in the 1840s led to a drop in population
B.different kinds of old Irish songs are all sung with instruments
C.it is harder to make a living as a farmer than as a factory worker
D.people are moving to the cities for lack of work in the countryside
30.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The Irish culture. B.A famous Irish writer.
C.The Irish character. D.The Irish musical instruments.
31.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Life in Ireland B.A Very Difficult History
C.Ireland, Past and Present D.The Independence of Ireland
【答案】28.B 29.A 30.A 31.C
根据第一段中“Finally, in 1921, the British government was forced to give independence to the south of Ireland. The result is that today there are two “Irelands”.(最后,在1921年,英国政府被迫给予爱尔兰南部独立。结果是,今天有两个“爱尔兰”。 )”可知,第一段主要讲述了两个“爱尔兰”是如何形成的。故选B。
29.推理判断题。根据第二段“In the 1840s the main crop, potatoes, was affected by disease and about 750,000 people died of hunger. This, and a shortage of work, forced many people to leave Ireland and live in the USA, the UK, Australia and Canada. As a result of these problems, the population fell from 8.2 million in 1841 to 6.6 million in 1851.(19世纪40年代,主要作物土豆受到疾病的影响,约75万人死于饥饿。这一点,再加上工作短缺,迫使许多人离开爱尔兰,前往美国、英国、澳大利亚和加拿大生活。由于这些问题,人口从1841年的820万下降到1851年的660万。)”可知,19世纪40年代的食物短缺导致了爱尔兰的人口下降。故选A。
根据最后一段“The Irish are famous for being warm-hearted and friendly. Oscar Wilde, a famous Irish writer, once said that the Irish were “the greatest talkers since the Greeks”. Since independence, Ireland has revived its own culture of music, language, literature and singing. Different areas have different styles of old Irish songs which are sung without instruments. Other kinds of Irish music use many different instruments such as the violin, whistles, etc.(爱尔兰人以热心友善著称。著名爱尔兰作家奥斯卡・王尔德曾说,爱尔兰人是 “继希腊人之后最健谈的人”。独立以来,爱尔兰复兴了本土的音乐、语言、文学和歌唱文化。爱尔兰不同地区有着不同风格的古老民歌,这些歌曲无乐器伴奏演唱。其他类型的爱尔兰音乐则会使用多种乐器,如小提琴、哨笛等。)”可知,最后一段主要讲述了爱尔兰的文化。故选A。
D
The United Kingdom is a country with a long history and special traditions. I visited London last year and found that British people value their old traditions while enjoying modern life. This beautiful mix makes the UK very attractive, leaving a deep impression on me.
One of the most famous traditional events is the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. I watched it with many tourists. The soldiers wear bright red coats, tall black hats and tidy uniforms. They walk in order and perform the ceremony carefully every day. With a history of over 300 years, it is deeply loved by local people and visitors. In my opinion, this ceremony is more than a show; it shows respect for the country’s long history and royal culture.
The UK also has many old villages and historic buildings. Stone houses, old churches and ancient castles lie in towns and countryside. People protect these places well, helping us learn about the life of ancestors hundreds of years ago. They are like bridges connecting the past and the present.
Today, the UK is a modern country with new shopping malls, tall buildings and modern technology. But British people never abandon their valuable traditions. They mix the old and the new in daily life. For example, a modern coffee shop can be set in an old stone building, where people use smart phones and enjoy traditional afternoon tea. I believe it is wise to live a modern life without forgetting the past.
In my opinion, traditions are important to the UK. They make people proud of their country and clear about their cultural identity. A country without traditions will lose its special character. The UK moves into the modern world, but still keeps its history and traditions alive.
32.What can we know about the Changing of the Guard from Paragraph 2?
A.It is held only for foreign tourists every day. B.It is a ceremony with over 300 years of history.
C.It is a simple performance just for visitors. D.It is loved by few local British people.
33.Why does the author talk about old buildings in the UK?
A.To show their special building styles. B.To tell readers their long history value.
C.To prove the UK protects its traditions well. D.To advise students to visit these old places.
34.What does the underlined word “abandon” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.give up B.take up C.look for D.wait for
35.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The UK’s traditional ceremony is very famous.
B.The UK mixes old traditions and modern life well.
C.Old buildings are important to the UK’s culture.
D.Modern life makes people forget old traditions.
【答案】32.B 33.C 34.A 35.B
根据第二段“With a history of over 300 years, it is deeply loved by local people and visitors.(它拥有三百多年历史,深受当地民众与游客喜爱。)”
根据第三段“The UK also has many old villages and historic buildings. Stone houses, old churches and ancient castles lie in towns and countryside. People protect these places well, helping us learn about the life of ancestors hundreds of years ago. They are like bridges connecting the past and the present.(英国还有众多古老村落与历史建筑。石砌房屋、老旧教堂和古老城堡散落于城镇与乡间。人们妥善保护着这些古迹,助力我们了解数百年前祖先的生活。它们如同桥梁,连接着过去与当下。)”可知,作者列举古建筑,是为了证明英国很好地守护自身传统。
34.词句猜测题。根据第四段“But British people never abandon their valuable traditions. They mix the old and the new in daily life.(但英国人从不abandon珍贵的传统,他们在日常生活中融合新旧事物。)”
根据第一段“I visited London last year and found that British people value their old traditions while enjoying modern life.(作者发现英国人在享受现代生活的同时,依然重视古老传统。)”
Adults should be getting at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity (中等强度) exercise every week, according to the Physical Activity Guidelines published recently. The guidelines advise adults to do muscle-strengthening activities of moderate or greater intensity at least twice per week. 36
“Engaging in a variety of exercises is definitely beneficial,” Voos, who is head team doctor for a football team, said. “Your body needs different ranges of motion, strength and stability. 37 ”
This is especially true for children. Sports medicine experts have long encouraged kids to play multiple sports and not to specialize in one at a young age. A lot of data on the topic shows children who specialize in a sport when young have an increased risk of injury. 38 They are less bored with exercise and enjoy greater sports achievements when they are older.
39 Voos said football players at training camp might do a lot of conditioning one day, then work on flexibility and balance the next, then move onto strength training, all of which is intermixed with playing football. “So even at the highest levels, our athletes are exposing their bodies to different motions,” Voos said.
Another plus to shaking things up with your exercise routine, especially if you prefer one activity, is that it helps prevent the plateau (高原) effect. 40 That’s because your body has become very efficient at the movements. To overcome such pauses, you need to change your movement routine and stimulate your body in different ways.
While changing up your exercise is important for many reasons, experts don’t have specific recommendations for how many different exercises you need to do each week or month to achieve the most benefit. But it’s important to work all of your muscle groups each week, if possible, to strengthen them all.
A.However, the children who don’t specialize tend to be healthier.
B.This is a period of time when progress in your favored sport stops.
C.They also note that varying your exercises can prevent overuse injuries.
D.But adults and even professional athletes need to vary their routines, too.
E.Cross-training lets your body see all of those different movements each week.
F.So they say even simple exercises done at work or home are beneficial, too.
G.Those who have the largest amount in their physical activity live the longest.
【答案】36.C 37.E 38.A 39.D 40.B

Dear Tracy,
I'm glad to share one of my most unforgettable travel experiences with you. It was during National Day last year that I visited Gulangyu Island in Xiamen with my parents. It's a beautiful island, whose scenery is breathtaking. We stood on the second floor of the boat, enjoying the sights of the sea. To my surprise, I saw the beautiful Jinmen Island. Then we took lots of photos and tasted special snacks off board. At dusk, we enjoyed ourselves so much and forgot to leave.
Through the trip, I've broadened my horizons and enriched my life experience.
Yours,
Li Hua

Elara stared at the 800-meter race sign-up sheet in the school hallway, her fingers hovering over the paper like nervous butterflies. Just last month, she’d struggled to finish a 400-meter PE test, far behind her classmates — her lungs burning like fire, her legs heavy as lead — until she’d finally crossed the finish line, cheeks hot with shame. “I’m not a runner,” she thought to herself, already stepping back to turn away, her shoes scraping softly against the floor.
But then she saw Coach Miller walking over, holding a stopwatch that shone in the hallway light, his smile warm and steady as a rock. “I saw you out there after class last week — running around the track even when everyone else had gone home,” he said. “That’s determination right there. Why not give it a try? It’s not about being fast; it’s about challenging yourself.” His words made her pause, a tiny spark of hope lighting up in her chest. For the first time, she thought: Maybe I can stop saying “I can’t.” She picked up a pen, its plastic body cool in her palm, and wrote her name down, the ink bleeding softly into the paper.
At the starting line of the 800-meter race a week later, Elara’s hands were still shaking. A fine layer of sweat was starting to form on her forehead, and the distant cheers drifted over, mixing with the soft whisper of wind through the oak trees. She’d almost quit training last week. Her legs had ached so badly that they felt ready to give out, and tears had streamed down her cheeks as she leaned against the track fence, catching her breath. She’d never run such a long distance before, not even for fun. But Coach Miller’s words kept echoing in her mind: “It’s not about winning, but giving your best”.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
The starting gun popped, and Elara took off.

New strength filling her, she pushed forward firmly.

The starting gun popped, and Elara took off. At first, she ran steadily, but gradually her legs felt like lead. Her breath came in short gasps, and she felt an urge to stop. “Maybe this was a mistake,” a voice whispered. Just then, she heard her classmates shouting, “Elara! Keep going!” She glanced over and saw Coach Miller waving, a big smile on his face. Suddenly, she remembered why she’d joined: not to get a championship, but to prove she could overcome her fear.
New strength filling her, she pushed forward firmly. When she crossed the finish line, she was last, but she finished! Her classmates gathered around. “You did it!” they cheered. Coach patted her on the shoulder, “That’s the spirit of sports.” Elara straightened up, gratefully meeting every pair of eyes. She wiped her sweat and smiled. She didn’t win, but she’d made the best choice—never giving up. It was at that moment that she realized success isn’t just about speed but the courage to keep trying.
The starting gun popped, and Elara took off. Nervous though she was, she summoned up her strength to run forward. No sooner had she completed the first lap than her legs began burning, and doubts flooded in. Glaring at the seemingly endless track ahead, she could no longer contain her despair. Yet Coach Miller’s words, like a lighthouse guiding her through the storm of doubt, kept echoing in her mind. The cheers from her classmates also became her driving force. “I can do this,” she whispered, biting her lip against exhaustion. Their belief in her inspired a flame of hope within.
New strength filling her, she pushed forward firmly. Though worn out and breathless, she dug deep, pushing harder with each steady step until she had carried herself past two struggling runners. The moment she finally crossed the finish line, her hands shot skyward. Tears of excitement welled up in her shining eyes. “I really did it!” she cried out, her voice full of joy and relief. It was Coach Miller’s proud smile that greeted her at the finish line. It dawned on her then that true success isn’t about beating others, but about overcoming one’s own doubts and limitations.
①稳步跑:run steadily/run at a steady pace/maintain a steady run
②克服:overcome/conquer/surmount
③冲过终点线:cross the finish line/dash across the finish line/complete the race

[高分句型2]It was at that moment that she realized success isn’t just about speed but the courage to keep trying.(运用了it was...that的强调句型及省略that的宾语从句)

His Chinese friend, Li Wei, smiled and offered help 57 (patient). “Bend your knees slightly 58 stretch your arms like tree 59 (branch),” Li Wei instructed, his voice soft but steady.
