Joy Chapman, 70, retired (退休) from work in 2018 but decided she’d never become a “boring” granny. She joined a local gym and got herself a hard exercise schedule which sees her in the gym every day for two and a half hours. She said, “I was afraid of turning 70, but I don’t feel my age at all.”
As her confidence in the gym improved, she hardly spent a day without going to the gym. “When I first started, I would come home feeling tired,” she said. “Every muscle ached, but as I progressed, my health levels improved and I got better. When people talk about martial arts, many only think about fighting. In fact, traditional martial arts have rich culture and different styles. They are usually divided into two main kinds: soft martial arts and hard martial arts.
Soft martial arts do not depend on strong power. Tai chi is a famous example. Its slow and smooth movements help people stay balanced. The core idea of soft styles is to use the opponent’s own force against them. Practitioners learn to avoid, turn away and redirect attacks instead of hitting back hard. For this reason, soft martial arts are great for people of different ages. They improve body balance and reduce stress. Many old people practise tai chi in parks every morning.
Hard martial arts, such as some styles of kung fu, focus on strength and fast moves. Players use blocking, punching and kicking to protect themselves. To master hard martial arts, you need strong muscles, fast reactions and plenty of training. It asks for high physical condition. Hard styles are popular in competitions, but they also carry cultural rules. Good players never use their skills to hurt others without reason.
Both soft and hard martial arts come from ancient times. At first, people learned martial arts to defend themselves. As time went by, they became a way to keep healthy and pass down traditional culture. Modern learners can choose styles according to their age, body condition and personal goals.
28.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?

B.Martial arts serve more purposes than self‑defence.
C.People must join competitions to learn martial arts.
D.All martial arts styles are created for fighting only.

Throughout history, trees have played a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. They absorb CO2 and transform it into oxygen. But one of the challenges with this traditional carbon absorption is that the CO2 trees store can be released back into the atmosphere when they die.
However, the discovery of certain trees in Kenya adds a new dimension to this natural process. These trees, also found in several other countries, have been observed to transform CO2 into calcium oxalate. Then bacteria present in the trees and surrounding soil transform it further into calcium carbonate (碳酸钙), a primary component of limestone and chalk. The unique process ensures that the CO2 is kept in solid form for much longer, even after the tree’s life ends. This finding was emphasized by Mike Rowley from the University of Zurich at the Goldschmidt Conference.
While the scientific community is optimistic about these findings, several challenges remain. The primary concern is determining the exact amount of CO2 that these trees can transform throughout their lifetime. Without this accurate data, it is challenging to assess the full impact of this method globally. Understanding the ecological balance and ensuring the preservation of biodiversity are crucial before worldwide planting of these trees. Cooperative research efforts are needed to explore these aspects and develop a comprehensive strategy for using these trees as a natural solution to climate change.
This discovery in Kenya invites us to reconsider the potential of natural processes in addressing environmental challenges. While technological solutions to climate change are vital, integrating natural methods offers an alternative approach. The unique ability of these trees presents a promising method for exploration.
The journey to fighting climate change is complex. As we dig deeper into understanding natural phenomena like the Kenyan trees, we must ask ourselves: How can we make the best of the power of nature to create a sustainable future for generations to come?
32.What is special about the trees found in Kenya?
A.They help turn CO2 into solids. B.They can absorb more CO2.
C.They can release oxygen quickly. D.They live in harmony with bacteria.
33.Why is the accurate data on CO2 transformation of the trees important?
A.To grow more trees in Kenya quickly.
B.To carry out more cooperative researches.
C.To keep the ecological balance and increase biodiversity.
D.To evaluate the global impact of the CO2 transformation.
34.What does the author try to explore in the last two paragraphs?
A.The method of green development. B.The role of nature in climate solutions.
C.The prospect of scientific approaches. D.The seriousness of global climate change.
35.What does the passage tell us?
A.Kenyan trees are a natural carbon lock.
B.A defensive strategy in nature is found.
C.Tree planting is a key to ecological balance.
D.A recent advance in CO2 research is achieved.
Traveling on a budget feels like an increasingly impossible goal. 36 Thankfully, there is one trick that helps you travel cheaply: planning your trip during the “shoulder season”.
Shoulder season is the transitional time between a destination’s high and low seasons. High season usually means the highest prices and crowded conditions. Low season means lower prices but often unpleasant weather, like monsoon season in Thailand. 37 During this time, it typically isn’t hot enough for short sleeves or cold enough for coats. Instead, it’s just cool enough to keep your shoulders covered.
38 First, it’s cheaper to fly. For example, a round-trip ticket from New York to Paris might peak at $1,075 in July but drop to $625 during the spring. Second, there are more hotel rooms available. More empty rooms mean more competitive prices and more choices. You might even get an upgraded room with a view that would otherwise be out of reach. Finally, you’ll encounter fewer crowds. Since kids are in school, popular destinations like theme parks and beaches are much quieter.
Broadly speaking, shoulder season occurs during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). 39 In the Southern Hemisphere, such as in Australia or South Africa, the seasons are opposite. Therefore, their spring shoulder season happens from September to November, while the fall period is from March to May.
Whether you’re heading out for a quick trip or an extended vacation, shoulder season offers a perfect balance. Remember to pack layers. 40 With a little planning, you can enjoy a dream vacation without breaking the bank.
A.However, there are exceptions.
B.Shoulder season is the happy medium.
C.It usually brings out the best weather for sightseeing.
D.The benefits of traveling during this time are significant.
E.You can also use a flight price tracker to get even better rates.
F.Airfare prices are climbing and hotels are charging expensive rates.
G.Transitional weather means you might feel both warm and cool during your stay.

I was born into a very close family. It was just my parents and me. Over the years I’ve noticed how well my parents manage to look after their health and how healthy they are. I had never bothered to follow their example or been that curious about the secret of their good health. I never realized what a great resource they could be.
I would look at them both, so slim, strong and healthy — much more so than me — and think, how will I ever get to be like them? I’m constantly impressed by their toughness. They have never taken any sick days from work, unless they really need to. They don’t need to visit the doctor much. Their habits are deep-rooted and it works for them.
Part of their success is how efficiently they control what they eat. Their diet is extremely healthy and they stick to it. For breakfast, it’s porridge; lunch is salad or a wholemeal sandwich with butter, garlic, raw onion and black pepper. Dinner is boiled vegetables, or beans. Both of them grew up eating fresh, unprocessed food.
My dad is a bus driver, and my mum works part-time as a sales assistant. My dad started skipping at the age of six. He’s now a mini celebrity and admired by people worldwide with thousands of followers on social media. And my mum has won fitness competitions at the gym.
In this respect, I was the complete opposite. I hated fitness and was lazy and unfit. Last week I had a health scare; I found a lump (肿块) on my neck. After an examination, it turned out to be fatty tissue, which isn’t harmful but unless I lose weight, or I have surgery, it could get worse. My parents said to me: don’t get surgery, let us train you and you’ll feel much better. I wanted to take the easy option and have it removed. But I also thought, maybe this was an eye-opener and a wake-up call for me to start getting fit.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
We worked out an exercise plan that suited all three of us.

I would never have believed in 100 years that I would love the gym so much.”
Joy said, “Exercising and staying healthy stops things from getting me down.” The granny has been longing for living since losing her husband in 2011, when he was just 58 — making Joy realise life is valuable. She said, “My husband died very young and very quickly. He became ill in February, was diagnosed (诊断) in March and died on April 22. No one could believe it. Everybody was shocked at his death. When he died, it made me think deeply of my life and I am quite a confident and strong person as a result.”
Every day when she exercises, Joy meets up with a group of friends who help keep her young. She said, “I’ve made good friends. As soon as I walked into the gym, the receptionists, the trainers, the cleaners — everyone showed friendly humour. They all think I’m mad, but in a nice way. I’m the healthiest granny in the town. I’d advise other people in later life not to be scared by the gym. Give it a go, because it’s just great.”
24.What caused Joy to hardly feel her age?
A.She worked out hard in a gym regularly.
B.She met with a lot of humorous friends.
C.She never felt tired from workouts.
D.She was shocked at the loss of her husband.
25.What does Joy think of her workouts in the gym?
A.It’s tiring. B.It’s addictive. C.It’s scary. D.It’s boring.
26.What benefit did Joy get from working out in the gym?
A.It helped her face life bravely. B.It helped her live a regular life happily.
C.It encouraged her to be kind and humorous. D.It made her never feel bored after 70.
27.What was Joy’s advice to those in retirement?
A.Meeting young people to keep young. B.Playing kind jokes with cleaners.
C.Having a try at the gym. D.Making as many friends as possible.
【答案】24.A 25.B 26.A 27.C
根据第一段“She joined a local gym and got herself a hard exercise schedule which sees her in the gym every day for two and a half hours. She said, “I was afraid of turning 70, but I don’t feel my age at all.”(她加入了当地一家健身房,为自己制订了严格的锻炼计划,每天要在健身房锻炼两个半小时。她说:“我之前很害怕70岁的到来,但我现在完全感觉不到自己的年纪。”)”可知,每天两个半小时的健身活动使Joy充满活力,原来害怕自己到70岁的她,现在完全感觉不到自己的年龄了。
25.推理判断题。根据第二段“As her confidence in the gym improved, she hardly spent a day without going to the gym.(随着她在健身房的信心不断提升,她几乎一天都离不开健身房了。)”和“I would never have believed in 100 years that I would love the gym so much.”(我之前无论如何都想不到,我会这么热爱健身房。)
根据第三段“Exercising and staying healthy stops things from getting me down.(锻炼和保持健康让我不会沮丧。)”和“When he died, it made me think deeply of my life and I am quite a confident and strong person as a result.(他去世后,让我对人生有了深刻的思考,结果我变成了一个自信又坚强的人)”可推知,健身帮助Joy在失去丈夫后走出低谷,变得自信坚强,勇敢面对生活。
根据最后一段“I’d advise other people in later life not to be scared by the gym. Give it a go, because it’s just great.(我建议其他年纪大的人不要害怕健身房。去试一试就好,因为健身真的很棒。)”可知,Joy给退休老年人的建议就是去健身房尝试健身。

A.Reasons why old people love hard martial arts.
B.The features and advantages of soft martial arts.
C.Rules for taking part in martial arts competitions.
D.The history of all Chinese martial arts.
29.What does the underlined word “redirect” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.give up completely
B.look forward to
C.strengthen greatly
D.change the direction of
30.What do we know about hard martial arts?
A.They need strong bodies and quick responses.
B.They use slow movements to keep balance.
C.They depend on the opponent’s force to defend.
D.They are only suitable for the elderly.
31.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Soft martial arts are more useful than hard ones.
B.Martial arts serve more purposes than self‑defence.
C.People must join competitions to learn martial arts.
D.All martial arts styles are created for fighting only.
【答案】28.B 29.D 30.A 31.B
根据第二段“Soft martial arts do not depend on strong power. Tai chi is a famous example.(软武术不依靠强大的力量。太极就是一个著名的例子。)”以及下文内容可知,第二段介绍了软武术的特点与益处。
29.词句猜测题。根据第二段“Practitioners learn to avoid, turn away and redirect attacks instead of hitting back hard.(练习者学会躲避、转身以及redirect攻击,而不是猛烈回击。)”
根据第三段“To master hard martial arts, you need strong muscles, fast reactions and plenty of training.(想要掌握硬武术,你需要强健的肌肉、快速的反应以及大量的训练。)”

Then bacteria present in the trees and surrounding soil transform it further into calcium carbonate (碳酸钙), a primary component of limestone and chalk. The unique process ensures that the CO2 is kept in solid form for much longer, even after the tree’s life ends.(这些树木也在其他几个国家发现,已被观察到将二氧化碳转化为草酸钙。 故选A。
根据第三段中的“The primary concern is determining the exact amount of CO2 that these trees can transform throughout their lifetime. Without this accurate data, it is challenging to assess the full impact of this method globally.(人们最关心的是确定这类树木在其生命周期内可转化的二氧化碳精确量。若缺乏这一准确数据,将难以评估该方法在全球范围内的整体影响。)”可知,在全球应用这一发现前,最重要的是确定这类树木在生命周期内转化二氧化碳的精确量,以便评估这一转化过程的全球影响。故选D。
34.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“This discovery in Kenya invites us to reconsider the potential of natural processes in addressing environmental challenges. 35.主旨大意题。根据第二段中的“However, the discovery of certain trees in Kenya adds a new dimension to this natural process. These trees, also found in several other countries, have been observed to transform CO2 into calcium oxalate. Then bacteria present in the trees and surrounding soil transform it further into calcium carbonate (碳酸钙), a primary component of limestone and chalk. The unique process ensures that the CO2 is kept in solid form for much longer, even after the tree’s life ends.(然而,在肯尼亚发现的一类特殊树木,为这一自然过程增添了新维度。 A“Kenyan trees are a natural carbon lock(肯尼亚树木是天然的碳锁。)”符合题意。故选A。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
We worked out an exercise plan that suited all three of us.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Now I can feel the benefits.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
We worked out an exercise plan that suited all three of us. We rose early in the morning, did some sit-ups and breathing exercises and then went for a run. We chose unprocessed food over fried chips and drank more water. Initial days were tough for me—my legs aching, and sweat streaming down, paired with unappealing meals. However, Dad’s firm “Keep going” drove me on, while Mom would wipe the sweat from my forehead. Gradually, the painful drills have transformed into a sustainable habit.
