Recently Jiang Mengnan has touched the hearts of countless people in China. She learned “listening” and “speaking” by reading lips (嘴唇) and became a doctoral (博士的) student in Tsinghua University.
Jiang went completely deaf when she was six months old after an illness. Doctors said she might not be able to speak in the future, but Jiang’s parents never gave up on her.
When Jiang was about one year old, her parents began teaching her to read lips. They asked Jiang to put her hands on their throats when they talked and felt the vibration (振动) of the vocal cords (声带) of each Chinese character. Jiang needed to practice more than 1,000 times to learn each pronunciation correctly, Jiang often sat in front of the TV with her parents and carefully looked at the lips of the news presenters. By seven, Jiang had been able to “see” what others were saying.
Starting in primary school, Jiang listened to the teachers by reading their lips, but it was impossible to cover all. She mostly taught herself and watched what the teachers wrote on the board to make up for the missing information. Jiang did quite well at school and made it all the way to Tsinghua University.

The first time I realized that I had a love for sports competitions was during the Field Day in elementary school. Small for my age, and more of a bookworm than a sports enthusiast, I had suffered that special humiliation of being picked last for various gym teams. The Field Day, which focused on individual skills, was different. In the Softball Throw event, I got my first taste of sporting victory. Credit goes to the example of my first coach, my father. He lifted weights every morning at home. He bought us all baseball gloves and hats, and in the warm months, we spent hours playing catch. Come fall, our backyard football games began with passing practice.
Once I got to sixth grade and switched to private school, our entire student body was assigned to either the Red or the White team. Throughout the year, we competed against each other in various games and exercises for points. I eventually became president of The Committee of Games, accelerating (加速) my competitive fever. However, in girls’ sports games at my school, I was no star. I also played on the field hockey team and the basketball team. School sports did not bleed into the weekends, as they do today, but at home, playing tennis, skating, skiing and biking were simply normal things we did. During break time, magazines were also quite popular for us teens. These regularly featured articles on physical exercise. Somehow, my college roommate and I took up the habit of completing Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) exercises every day, a practice that continued into my marriage, when we had no spare funds to use to join a gym.
So, though it shocks some of our friends, that early foundation evolved (演变) in adulthood into a sports and fitness focus, considered essential even on vacation. I still love reading and the arts, too. As far as I’m concerned, life is the richest with my feet in both worlds.
28.What does the underlined word “humiliation” mean in Paragraph 1?
A.Responsibility B.Panic C.Shame D.Desire
29.What did the author owe her victory in the Softball Throw event to?

B.Her confidence in her sports ability.
C.The sports talent passed down from her father.
D.The example and training offered by her father.
30.What happened after the author stepped into adulthood?
A.She generally exercised on weekends. B.She joined Royal Canadian Air Force.
C.She preferred reading to exercising. D.She kept her love for sports.
31.What is the author’s purpose in writing the article?
A.To describe how her father built her interest in sports.
B.To recall her childhood memories about sports.
C.To express her passion for sports and fitness.
D.To stress the benefits of physical exercise.

The Amazon in the heart of South America and the Atlantic rainforests on the east coast of the continent are separated by hundreds of miles of dry forest and savanna (稀树草原) that are too difficult for most rainforest trees to survive. Despite this gap, the two ecosystems share many different species of tree.
It was previously supposed that the trees bridged this gap during historical periods when the region was much wetter and more forgiving to passing trees.
Off the back of new research, a new theory has sprung up: The forests of the Atlantic rainforest are constantly occupied by trees from the Amazon. They do this by growing and spreading along the river, which acts like a hidden “highway” between the two separated ecosystems.
“Rather than tree species being exchanged during specific wetter periods in the past, we found that they have dispersed consistently over time,” Dr James Nicholls, lead study author, said in a statement. “This probably happens slowly, by generations of trees growing along the ‘highways’ provided by rivers that run through Brazil’s dry ecosystems,” added Dr Nicholls.
The researchers came to this conclusion by studying the genetics of 164 species of Inga tree, which are common in Latin American rainforests. Their DNA was used to reconstruct the “family tree” of the plants showing the team when each species split from its numerous ancestors and their pattern of movement across the continent. Researchers identified 16 to 20 instances of species migrating from the Amazon to the Atlantic Forest and successfully taking root.
The study highlights how the natural world does not respect the national borders set by homo sapiens (智人). These ecosystems are deeply connected, frequently spreading between countries regardless of border checks and passports. This view, the team says, could have huge importance for the conservation of the rainforests in South America and the rest of the world.
32.What can we learn from the old theory of tree migration?
A.It depended on genetic data. B.It stressed slow river spread.
C.It proved species connection. D.It assumed wetter past periods.
33.How do trees from the Amazon reach the Atlantic rainforest according to the new theory?
A.By using wind movement. B.By getting human assistance.
C.By following river highways. D.By relying on animal migration.
34.What does the underlined word “dispersed” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Spread. B.Increased. C.Reduced. D.Disappeared.
35.What does the study suggest people do for rainforest conservation?
A.Focus only on the Amazon. B.Cooperate across countries.
C.Protect each forest separately. D.Ignore national borders entirely.

Everyone has things they’re good at — and could potentially even be great at with a bit of effort and time.____36____ Here’s how to find your talents so you can improve them and put them to good use.
Try new things.
Exploring new activities is like opening doors to rooms you’ve never entered. Each new activity offers a chance to discover something you’re naturally good at. For example, you might sign up for a pottery class and find you are good at shaping clay, or join a coding workshop and realize you have a talent for problem-solving.____37____
Reflect on what you enjoy.
Your passions often show you what your talents are. Think about what activities you look forward to or what hobbies make you lose track of time. ____38____For example, if you love drawing pictures, you might be good at art. Or, if you enjoy putting things together and fixing them, you might be skilled in mechanics (机械学) or engineering.
____39____
The requests you receive from other people can reveal what you’re good at. If friends always turn to you for help with their math problems, you likely have a talent for numbers. If they seek your advice on personal matters, you might be great at understanding others and offering support. Pay attention to these requests, as they can point out skills and talents that others naturally associate with you. Once you find your talents, you can realize your potential.
Keep an open mind.
____40____These thoughts can limit what you think you’re capable of. Instead, be open to the idea that you might have hidden talents in areas you’ve never explored before. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Anthony was a fifth-grade student in the Albany Elementary School which had a rich history and a good reputation across the state, thanks to its devotion to providing high-quality education and shaping generations of Albany’s children.
Frankly speaking, Anthony was neither the brightest student, nor the most athletic in the school, but he had a real enthusiasm for learning and always approached his studies with strong curiosity. Every morning, he would greet the school day with a wide and genuine smile that brightened the entire classroom. His classmates couldn’t help but be influenced by his optimistic attitude towards life, which helped him become very popular and also form many friendships at school.
One unexpected day, the teacher announced a surprise test. It was a subject that Anthony had struggled with. Even more unfortunately, he was not fully prepared. As the papers were handed out, Anthony’s heart sank, and his mind went blank, with a wave of anxiety and nervousness flooding over him. He looked around, hoping for some comfort and encouragement, but all he saw were the focused expressions of his classmates. The silence in the room was deafening, broken only by the occasional sound of turning papers.

Text 1
W: Could you pass by the butcher’s to pick something up for dinner?
M: I’ll get something from the supermarket. I don’t want to run all across town.
W: Well, at least pass by the baker’s on your way back to pick up a cake.
M: Will do.
Text 2
W: Did the package I was waiting for finally come in last night?
M: You mean the one with the new brochures?
W: No, that came in yesterday morning. The one with the books.
M: The only thing I found this morning were the office supplies.
Text 3
W: How did you like the Grand Canyon?
M: Apart from the kid sitting next to me getting sick during the helicopter ride, we had a fantastic time. We went into the canyon on donkeys with a guide. We also camped at the bottom of the canyon.
Text 4
W: What seems to be the problem today?
M: Well, I’ve had this really bad headache. My wife suggested I should ask for sick leave and come to see you.
W: Hm, any other problems?
M: I had a bit of a sore throat.
Text 5
M: I read so many great reviews about this place.
W: Are you sure this is the place you read about? There isn’t even a line.
M: Yes, that’s a little odd.
W: Well, let’s order and see if this place is as good.
Text 6
W: ⑥Good morning. I own a shop that sells women’s clothing, and I want to update the fitting room area.
M: We can certainly help you with that, ma’am. The first step would be to visit your store to take measurements and discuss the project in detail. ⑦Would Wednesday morning work for you?
W: ⑦Not this week. Several of my employees are on vacation, so I’m busy covering their responsibilities. How about doing it next Tuesday instead?
M: That’s OK.
Text 7
M: ⑧So, are you writing anything for the school newspaper? They need reports on football matches. Do you fancy that?
W: ⑧I do, but they’ve already got someone to cover the sports events. I was asked to do a piece on the discussion club. I accepted but really wanted to do something on the leaving party for Mr. Green.
M: Oh well. I suppose Sam’s going to be the editor again this term.
W: Really? I thought you were interested. ⑨Will you be the photographer again?
M: ⑨Well, I’ve agreed to take it on. But I’d like someone to suggest that I work as the designer. That’s another job I think I could do.
Text 8
W: So, was the film any good?
M: Well, I think you’d enjoy it. And there were some funny bits.
W: ⑩Doesn’t sound like you were very impressed.
M: ⑩No, I did like it. I couldn’t figure out what was going on half the time. That was the only thing that ruined it a bit for me. It wasn’t until the conclusion that it all sort of made sense. And the final scene was very powerful.
W: ⑪I’m surprised they chose such young actors for the main roles. The characters are meant to be middle-aged.
M: Well, I didn’t have any issues with that. The performers all did a good job. Maybe if schools showed film adaptations of classic novels, more students would enjoy literature.
W: ⑫But there’s something unique about great literature that you can’t get from films. It’s better to bring novels to life through class discussions.
M: I guess!
Text 9
M: How did you become a teacher?
W: I had never planned to teach! ⑬It just happened. I went traveling after university and I was in Greece. I was walking through a park and I heard some people practicing English. I was feeling a bit lonely, so I stopped and said hello.
M: And you began to chat.
W: Yes. Anyway, they didn’t have anyone to speak English to and I knew a little bit of Greek, but I wanted to learn more. ⑭So we agreed to meet every day for a week and speak English for half an hour and then Greek for half an hour. ⑮Anyway, I found that I was really enjoying the English half-hour, and I was quite good at it! So I did some more study. And then I passed some teaching exams and I ended up with a really good job!
M: ⑯Wow! So that park walk started your teaching career.
W: ⑯Yes! And I’m nervous about speaking to people really, so if I hadn’t been brave enough, I wouldn’t have got my first job.
Text 10
M: Hello, everyone. I’ve come to talk to you today about a really successful product: coffee! ⑰As some stories say, coffee was first consumed in Ethiopia, in Africa, dating back to the fifteenth century. However, a popular tale identifies the ninth century as when coffee was originally consumed as a drink. By the seventeenth century, it was enjoyed worldwide. ⑱The tale goes that an Ethiopian farmer, Kaldi, spotted that his goats became energetic and didn’t sleep once they’d consumed the red, coffee beans. Then he took some of the beans with him. ⑲In those days, there was no professional chefs, so instead he gave them to a local leader, who initially rejected them and threw them onto a fire. The smell of the roasting beans changed his mind, leading him to create a tasty hot drink. ⑳Coffee quickly spread to Yemen in southern Arabia. Not only was it enjoyed in people’s homes, but also in the world’s earliest coffee shops. As the popularity grew in Europe, coffee shops appeared there too and became centers of social activity. Later, the British took coffee to North America.第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)

It was a note from one of his friends, offering him the answers. Anthony recognized the handwriting instantly — it was from his best friend, Mike. His heart pounded as he stared at the neatly written solutions. A part of him longed to copy them and avoid embarrassment, but memories of his teacher emphasizing honesty flashed through his mind. He glanced at Mike, who gave him an encouraging nod. However, Anthony recalled how his parents always told him that true success came from hard work, not shortcuts. The conflict within him grew fiercer.
Para. 2
With a deep breath, Anthony picked up the note and slowly tore it into pieces. He raised his hand and quietly informed the teacher about the incident. Though his voice trembled, he felt a wave of relief. To his surprise, the teacher praised his integrity and allowed him extra time to complete the test. Anthony answered the remaining questions calmly, doing his best. When the results came out, he scored lower than usual but earned everyone’s respect. That day, he learned that courage and honesty were far more valuable than perfect grades.
