Here are different opinions from different people on China’s changes.
China, like India, was a developing country and day-to-day life always told us that things were in short supply in 1977.
China has lifted 740 million people out of poverty (贫困) in the last four decades. It has become better and better.
—An Indian friend
“It’s much easier to travel to foreign countries now, and it’s not very expensive.”
“When we were young, we wanted to travel to many places, but we failed to do so for many reasons,” said a retired Chinese man Mr Qu.
What has changed is that nowadays children have to take after-school classes, which was unnecessary when I was young. At primary school, I had lots of homework. Also, when I was in middle school, I had to get up at 6 a.m. and I didn’t get home until 6 p.m., but I still had time to play sports with my friends, watch TV and read my favourite books and so on. Now, each parent wants his or her child to receive a better education, and with more parents sending their children to after-school classes, a strange, tiring and endless competition has appeared. So it is a great luxury for children to have their own time to relax and do sports.

Times change! The day I heard that the Bright Bookstore was going to close, I was sad. The bookstore had been in the neighborhood for 50 years, and it was a great place where people could know each other through their love of books.
When I met Old Tim, the store’s owner, he said it was difficult to run a traditional bookstore. Most young people read e-books and more people bought books online.
Childhood memories came back to me so clearly. A group of us kids used to go to the store, spending hours reading there or just talking with Tim. Tim encouraged us to share our ideas by writing them on a large board.
A few months later, I was back and was surprised to see that the Bright Bookstore was still open for business. It was still old, but inside it was like a different world. In an area, a book reading was going on. Nearby, some readers were sharing their ideas on a screen instead of the large board. Some were reading on computers. It even had a coffee shop selling nice food. Clearly, the Bright Bookstore was in good, creative hands.
Tim told me that there were more community events in the coffee shop such as book readings and even concerts and movie nights.
“Well, as you can see, technology and creativity have brought my old bookstore into the 21st century! I’m so glad to see that everything I wanted to offer to the community is still here,” said Tim.

D. Tim refused to use any new technology at first.
18. The writer mainly wants to remind us that ________.
A. e-books will take the place of paper books
