When she was younger, Julia Foland wanted to learn another language. “I tried taking Spanish in school and I tried to self-study French. However, these languages didn't seem to match with me. I couldn't really find passion in studying them, ” she said. “A friend of mine took Korean classes when she attended college, and hearing her stories about studying Korean was the main motivation for me to start. ”
After high school, Foland took a gap year before continuing her education. She came to College of DuPage because her mother talked about how much she loved it. When she visited the campus, she was attracted by the Korean language program.
Finally, Foland connected with another language. She enjoyed it so much that she entered the Midwest Korean Speech Contest, encouraged by her instructor, Miran Lee. “Thanks to Mr. Lee, by the day of the contest I had gained so much confidence. I couldn't believe it when they announced me as the winner. ”
Foland received a scholarship to attend the Sungkyunkwan University Korean Language Center in Seoul. She attended classes taught entirely in Korean and found the intensive study a perfect opportunity to improve her skills.
“I was the only Western student in my class. Most of my friends couldn't speak English, so we had to communicate only through Korean. I feel like this was a huge reason why my Korean skills improved. I think I've even improved in expressing myself in English. I've gained a lot more confidence when interacting with others and I realized how much I like harmonizing with people. I also realized how much interest I have in people different from me, because there's truly so much to learn from them. ”
For anyone interested in studying languages, Foland said, “Don't hesitate. Language programs are an excellent way to start your journey and familiarize yourself with your chosen language. ”
24.What motivated Foland to start learning Korean?
A.Her mother's impact on him. B.Her teacher's encouragement.
C.A friend's relevant experiences. D.A desire to learn about another country.
25.How did Foland feel about the result of the Midwest Korean Speech Contest?
A.Amazed. B.Dismissive. C.Confident. D.Disappointed.
26.How did learning Korean benefit Foland?
A.She became more outgoing. B.Her sociability was enhanced.
C.Her English level was improved. D.She would have more choices.
27.What's Foland's suggestion for language lovers?
A.Engage in learning via language programs. B.Travel abroad and learn by experience.
C.Avoid self-studying a foreign language. D.Take a gap year to learn a new language.

On a cool day this past August, a two-year-old boy walked onto Boston’s Stanwood Street, a narrow neighborhood way lined with parked cars on both sides. A driver hit the child, whose blue-shirted body disappeared under the car. Miraculously (奇迹般地), the child survived.
But it was not a miracle that saved him mere feet before hitting the child, the driver had slowed for a speed hump (减速带). “Had that car been going faster, there’s a very good chance that kid would not have lived.” says Boston chief of streets Jasper Franklin-Hodge.
Crashes, explains associate professor of surgery David Mooney, are “all kinetic energy (动能) .” Doubling a car’s speed makes its kinetic energy four times bigger. “Only 10 percent of pedestrians (行人) die when struck by a vehicle traveling at 23 miles per hour — but a quarter die when the speed is 32 m. p.h. , half at 42 m. p.h. , and three-quarters at 50 m. p.h.” he says.
Accordingly, safety-minded road planners look for every opportunity to reduce vehicle speed. One might think speed could be reduced simply by lowering the speed limit, but the reality is more complex. Stanwood Street’s posted speed limit of 20 m. p.h. (a “slow zone”) was reinforced by tightly parked cars and speed humps — all physically encouraging the driver to go slowly. Architect Jeff Speck studies urban roads like this one, helping cities design safe, walkable streets. In an urban environment, he says, drivers choose their speed based not on the posted limit but on “what feels safe in that environment”.
But drivers often dislike the interventions that encourage slow speeds. Many drivers desire “elbow room”, so those who are going beyond the speed limit by 5 to 10 m. p.h. can still proceed easily. However, designing a road for a speed faster than its posted limit invites everyone to speed. “Giving drivers a feeling of safety,” Speck says, “makes them more dangerous.”
28. What saved the two-year-old boy?
A. Pure luck. B. A speed hump.
C. The quick action of the driver. D. The low speed limit of the neighborhood.
29. How does Mooney illustrate the relationship between vehicle speed and death rate?
A. By referring to a study. B. By sharing experiences.
C. By providing statistics. D. By analyzing cause and effect.
30. What does the underlined word “reinforced” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Strengthened. B. Replaced. C. Disturbed. D. Determined.
31. What is Speck’s attitude towards “elbow room”?
A. Favorable. B. Disapproving. C. Tolerant. D. Unclear.

Scientists have discovered that young ants who become seriously ill will send out a selfless “kill me” signal to the worker ants who attend to them. The new findings, described in the journal Nature Communications, add to a growing understanding of the complex ways these highly social animals try to keep deadly infectious diseases under control.
With so many insects packed together in wet and dark places sharing the same genetic vulnerability, infections and diseases can quickly pose an enormous threat to the well-being of an ant colony (群体). To manage these risks, in some species, ants restructure their nests to slow the spread of a deadly disease and in others, ant queens eat infected pupae (蛹) to prevent the spread of disease, and sick adult ants will leave the colony to avoid infecting their nest-mates.
Years ago, Sylvia Cremer, the report’s senior author from the Institute of Science and Technology Austria, discovered a phenomenon called “destructive disinfection (破坏性消毒)”. When a young ant is seriously ill, an adult worker ant will apply a self-produced disinfectant to kill it. “Interestingly, this also occurs at the time when the pupa isn’t infectious, because it’ll become infectious if it isn’t treated,” Cremer says.
To find out whether the destructive disinfection was a passive behavior or an active one, Cremer’s team studied the invasive garden ant species Lasius neglectus. When the team left the infected young ant by itself, there was no signal. It was only when they put in adult worker ants that could disinfect and kill the infected young ant that the young ant sent out the signal, which comes in the form of a smell. Moreover, they also found that young queens don’t send out the “kill me” signal because the young queens can fight off infection.
To prove this was a causal relationship, Cremer and her team transferred the smell the sick young ants produced to a healthy young ant, which they then put together with an adult worker ant. The scientists found that even though the young ant was perfectly healthy, the worker ant started attacking the young ant, proving the smell was the active call to action.
32.What does the underlined word “vulnerability” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Weakness. B.Capability. C.Advancement. D.Balance.
33.What did the scientists do for the new study?
A.They explored how the kill-me signals were received.
B.They analyzed how sick young ants sent out signals.
C.They investigated which ants were so sensitive to signals.
D.They tested which situations made the sick ants signal.
34.How did the scientists prove the causal relationship?
A.By comparing different ant species.
B.By observing ant behavior in nature.
C.By illustrating the chemical composition.
D.By letting a healthy young ant carry the smell.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Worker Ants Save Young Ants B.Sick Young Ants Ask to Be Killed
C.Ants Produce Disinfectant Naturally D.Ants Use Chemicals to Communicate

How to Refuse Others Properly as a High School Student
As a high school student, you value friendship and hope to get along well with people around you. ___36___ Unwilling acceptance often makes you buried in extra work and slows down your own progress. Learning to say no appropriately is a necessary social skill for you.
Distinguish between reasonable requests and improper ones. True friends will respect your heavy study pressure. If a friend wants you to give up your reviewing time for unimportant entertainment activities, this is a request you should politely refuse. ___37___
Choose suitable ways to express your refusal. ___38___ You can state your real difficulty honestly instead of making up complex lies. For example, you can explain that you have to finish a lot of reviewing work before the coming exam. Meanwhile, you can offer limited help within your ability when possible. This shows you care about others though you cannot satisfy their full demands.
___39___ Some classmates may try to persuade you again to change your mind. If you give in because of peer pressure, you will fall into the same trouble once more. Keep your attitude polite and steady. Good relationships will not break just because of your reasonable refusal.
Understand that saying no is not an act of selfishness. ___40___ When you refuse wisely, you protect your limited time and energy from being drained unnecessarily. 第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was sitting at work when I noticed a very untidy man standing in the lobby. He looked lost and possibly homeless, or maybe even drunk because he was unsteady on his feet. I asked if I could help him. Trying to hand some old papers in my direction, he asked if I could make him a copy of his military paperwork. I took the papers very carefully from him so as not to tear them anymore than they already were.
As I made the copies he told me that he was a soldier and had been half blinded in a war. I was shocked, but took a deep breath and simply replied, “Thank you for your service.”
He told me how he hated going out in public because he knew people thought he must be a homeless or drunk man. I felt terrible because I had indeed thought the very same thing. The veteran(老兵) went on to say that he was college educated and had many hopes and dreams in the past.
Then I noticed he was holding a small brown paper bag. The bag was wrinkled and dirty so I offered him a plastic bag for his paperwork. He thanked me and then asked me to hold out my hand. As I held my hand open, he carefully opened up his bag as if it contained some rare treasure and then he placed two items in my palm.
My jaw dropped and my eyes filled with tears. This wonderful man had just placed his military medals into my hand.
I thanked him again for his service and for blessing me with the opportunity to hold history in the palm of my hand. He gathered his items and carefully placed them back in his bag and started to walk away. I saw him take a few dollars and some change from his pocket. He turned back and asked if there was a grocer nearby so he could get some food.
He explained he was diabetic (糖尿病患者) and he was getting shaky because his blood sugar was getting low. Being diabetic myself I couldn’t let him leave alone.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Approaching to the veteran, I suggested walking him to the store.
