Climate change leads to threat to the
world's sandy beaches, and as many as half of
them could disappear by 2100,a new study has
found.Even by 2050 some coastlines could be
hard to make out from what we see today, with
l0%tol2%facing serious erosion(侵蚀).
Using updated sea level rise predictions,
the researchers analyzed how beaches around
the world would be in a future with higher
seas and more damaging storms. They also
considered natural processes like wave ero-
sion,as well as human factors -like coastal
building developments, all of which can affect
a beach's health.The study found that sea
level rise is expected to outweigh these other
factors, and if countries do not cut pollution
quickly,rising seas could permanently destroy
beaches and coastal towns in the near future.
Additionally,the more greenhouse gases hu-
mans release into the air,the greater the neg-
ative impact on beaches worldwide will be-
come.
It's hard to overstate just how important
the world's beaches are. They cover more than
one third of the world's coastlines and protect
coastal areas from storms.Beaches are also
important economic engines,supporting re-
laxation,tourism and other activities.And in
some areas, the beach is more than a vacation
destination.In places like Australia,life near
the coast surrounds the beach for much of the
year.
Some of the world's most popular bea-
ches are already taking actions.Places like Mi-
ami Beach are bringing in large amounts of
sand by truck to fix coastlines severely dam-
aged by waves.Meanwhile,some areas have
built protective walls to try to keep the sand
from washing away. But scientists say the fi-
nancial and environmental costs of these pro-
·338
turing nature
jects are huge, while rising seas, more power-
ful storms as well as a warmer climate may
make this a losing battle.
However,the researchers did find that
humans have some control over what happens
to the world's beaches.If the world's govern-
ments can continue cutting greenhouse gas
pollution,the researchers found that 22%of
projected beach losses by 2050 could be pre-
vented,a number that grows to 40%by 2100
if greenhouse gases are limited.

coastlines.
B.Significance of beaches can't be underes-
timated.
C.Tourism may cause damage to beach con-
servation.
D.Beaches are the only economic engine for
Australia.
3.How do scientists think of the actions taken
to protect beaches?
A.Costly but ineffective.
B.Efficient but not enough.
C.Influential but slow.
D.Comprehensive but not sustainable.
4.What is the text mainly about?
A.Actions have been taken to protect bea-
ches.
B.Beaches are facing the threat of disappea-
ring.

Maria and Peter lived in a coastal city.
The greatest pleasure in summer for them was
to swim at their local beach after school. But
one day they started to lose their enthusiasm
for swimming in the waters.More often than
not, they would find plastic bags thrown on
the beach.Worse still,as they swam in the
water, some plastic bags would float around
them and even stick to their legs when they
walked to the shore.
They were upset and decided something
needed to be done to stop the beautiful sea be-
coming consumed by waste.One weekend,
Maria and Peter brought a big bag to the
beach and determined to clean it up.Sweat
streamed down from their forehead while they
bent down and picked up the plastic bags.To
their disappointment,after a day's hard
work, there were still many plastic bags lying
on the beach or floating in the water.Going
home with aching legs and arms,Maria and
Peter were almost defeated by a strong sense
of failure.
That night over dinner with their par-
ents, the pair ate silently.Noticing their low
spirits,Mother asked gently,"You two
looked so down.What happened?"Exchan-

are islands where mangroves grow. They could be the
key to slowing climate change.Mangrove forests pull
carbon dioxide out of the air, holding four times as much
of the planet-warming gas as other forests can. They
support diverse ecosystems. As sea levels rise with glob-
al warming, the trees could play a big role in protecting
coastal cities like Karachi from flooding.(在近海,有红树
say this could provide much-needed housing and bring in
billions of dollars. They claim that some of that money
could be used to plant mangroves in other parts of Paki-

thinks it's wrong to focus on the losses in 7%of the
country while ignoring the success in 93%of it.But
Qaiser believes it's important to protect every bit.
Qaiser
A.fruitful富有成果的;B.cost-effective划
算的:C.inconsistent不一致的;D.one-sided片面的。]
forest is now alarmingly close to dying by 2030 due to
climate change and forest loss,a WWF report warns.
根据第二段“Deforestation in the
Amazon reached a record high this year,as illegal trees
degraded,turning to a dry land..”
"What's worse,the 'tipping points'could...area to re-
duce to just20 percent of the original cover..(更糕的
a serious warning that we need to take .
a path to dis-

swapo」
2.A[分析本句的结构可知,后半句中的“more than
that,,.”
知,A项符合该处语境,且选项中的that与more than
that中的that均指代该段首句中的Invite5-l0 people。
bring与下一句“They should also prepare...”
types of clothing on different surfaces in the room,”的关
5.D[由空前一句中的“turn on a certain song,or whatev-

Getting to Know the Plants Around Us
Last weekend,I participated in a "Getting to Know
the Plants Around Us"activity organised by our Students
Union, and it benefited me a lot.
The activity began with a lecture by a local botanist,
who taught us about the different characteristics and uses
of various plant species. We then went on a natural walk to
observe and collect samples of different plants.Throughout
the event,I was struck by the incredible variety of plants
that exist in our world and learned about plants that are
used for medical purposes,as well as those that provide
food and shelter for animals.I also gained a greater appre-
ciation for the role that plants play in maintaining the bal-
ance of our ecosystem.
Overall,it was a valuable and enriching experience.

next few hours witnessed their heated discussion and grow-
ing confidence in a clean and beautiful coast. The next day,
they went to the beach and filmed a short video showing
plastic bags lying on the beach and floating in the sea.Pe-
ter,who was good at writing, wrote an article talking
about the present situation of the beach and asking people
to take part in the cleanup.
Excited and nervous, they posted the video and arti-
cle on WeChat. To their amazement, their post went viral
online immediately.Countless comments flooded in saying
how heartbroken they were when looking at the polluted
beach and ocean. What amazed Maria and Peter more was
that numerous people in their community, encouraged by
their efforts, offered to join in their clean-up.More and
more people came to the beach to collect plastic bags and
they also appealed to others to avoid throwing or using
plastic bags.A year later, with their joint and continuous
effort, the coast regained its beauty and Maria and Peter
regained their long-awaited pleasure.

“A Boy Caring for Older Dogs'”
"Adults with a poor education are also likely to have poor
health,a growing body of evidence suggests..(越来越多
根据本句中的“Study after study has
reasons for it and what can be done”可推测出,在已知这
"And if you lack the basic reading skills required to func
tion adequately in the health-care environment, you
might find it hard to effectively understand your medical

People
with a growth mindset believe they can improve them-
Individuals with a
fixed mindset。. People with a
Individuals
with a fixed mindset形成对比。」
