Sunshine High School is holding its first “Laugh Out Loud Week” from 9 to 13 December. All events are free and open to every student.
● Stand-up Workshop (Monday 9 Dec. 4:00-5:30 p.m., Room 301)
Local comedian Mark Yeung will show you how to turn everyday school life into comic material — the endless canteen queue, the unspoken rules of group projects, the strange language of the school notice board. You will write a short set and perform it for your classmates. No experience is needed; bring a notebook.
● The Science of Laughter (Tuesday 10 Dec. 12:30-1:10 p.m., Science Lecture Hall)
Dr Chen, a psychologist, explains why human beings laugh long before they can speak, how shared laughter builds trust between strangers, and why ten minutes of genuine laughter can lower stress levels almost as effectively as light exercise. A short video of babies laughing will be shown.
● Comedy Film Night (Wednesday 11 Dec. 7:00-9:00 p.m., School Hall)
Three short comedies chosen by the Film Society, followed by a ten-minute discussion: why is a scene funny in one culture but flat in another? Popcorn is provided; bring your own cushion.
● The Big Joke Exchange (Friday 13 Dec. lunchtime, Front Playground)
Write your best clean joke on a card and drop it into the box outside the library. At lunchtime the cards are exchanged at random, and the student who makes the crowd laugh the loudest wins a hand-made “Golden Smile” medal. The judges are three teachers and one very serious cat.

For eight years, Duan Xiaomei has walked into the children’s ward of No. 1 People’s Hospital wearing a red nose, oversized shoes and a name that nobody believes: Dr Bubble.
She is not a doctor. She is a “hospital clown”, one of a small but growing group in China trained to work alongside medical staff and to use humour to help young patients deal with fear, pain and long days of treatment.
The work is far harder than it looks. Before entering a ward, Duan checks with the nurses about each child’s condition. She never enters a room uninvited, never jokes about illness, and never touches medical equipment. Her tools are simple: a balloon animal, a squeaky voice, a pair of sunglasses that can “see through” bandages. “The moment a child laughs, he stops being a patient for a few seconds,” she says. “That is when his body relaxes and the medicine works better.”
Not every child responds. Some are too weak, some are angry, and some simply stare at the wall. Duan has learned to read these signals. With a teenager who refuses to speak, she may sit quietly and fold a paper plane, leaving it on the bed without a word. Hours later the plane sometimes comes flying back across the room.
Her hardest lesson came early. In her first month she made a joke about a bitter medicine, and a five-year-old boy burst into tears. “I thought I was being funny,” she says. “I was actually reminding him of something he was trying to forget.” Since then she has kept one rule: humour must never be at the patient’s expense.
Today Duan trains new clowns and keeps a notebook of “small victories” — a child who asked for her by name, a mother who smiled for the first time in a week, a boy who finally ate his lunch because the spoon had a face on it. “People think laughter is a light thing,” she says. “In a hospital, it is as necessary as the medicine.”
4. What is Duan Xiaomei’s job at the hospital?
A. A children’s doctor. B. A ward nurse.
C. A hospital clown. D. A cleaner.
5. What does Duan do before she enters a ward?
A. She puts on her make-up.
B. She checks each child’s condition with the nurses.
C. She prepares the medicine.
D. She asks the parents to leave.
6. How does Duan deal with a teenager who refuses to talk?
A. She tells a joke in a loud voice.
B. She leaves the room at once.
C. She sits quietly and leaves a paper plane.
D. She asks the doctor for help.
7. What lesson did Duan learn from the five-year-old boy?
A. Children dislike bitter medicine.
B. Humour must never be at the patient’s expense.
C. Jokes work better on older children.
D. Clowns should not enter children’s wards.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. C 7. B

C
Most of us admire people who keep going when things fall apart, and we usually explain their success by saying they were born with willpower. Psychologists are not so sure.
In a series of studies at Fudan University, researchers followed 320 first-year university students for two semesters. Students who reported higher levels of what psychologists call perseverance did not necessarily study for longer hours. What set them apart was the way they explained setbacks. When they failed an exam, they were far more likely to describe the cause as something they could change — a poor revision plan, too little sleep — rather than as a fixed lack of ability.
This matters because explanation drives behaviour. A student who believes the problem is his strategy will rewrite his timetable; a student who believes the problem is himself will simply stop trying. The researchers also found that a short training programme teaching students to reframe failure as information closed almost half of the gap between the two groups within a single semester.
Perseverance, then, is less a personality than a habit, and habits can be built. Three practices appear again and again in the research. The first is to make the next step small enough that it cannot be refused: ten minutes of revision rather than an entire chapter. The second is to keep a written record of past difficulties that were overcome, because the memory of failure is far more vivid than the memory of recovery. The third is to connect the goal to something larger than personal success; students who gave a reason beyond themselves — a family expectation, a wish to work in a rural clinic — reported far less desire to quit.
None of this makes failure pleasant. But it does suggest something hopeful: the difference between giving up and going on is often not talent, but the story we tell ourselves about what went wrong.
8. What did the Fudan study find about students with perseverance?
A. They studied for much longer hours. B. They were born with stronger willpower.
C. They explained setbacks as something changeable. D. They never failed an examination.
9. Why does the way students explain failure matter?
A. It drives their behaviour. B. It changes their intelligence.
C. It decides their school timetable. D. It shapes their teachers’ attitudes.
10. Which of the following is one of the three practices mentioned?
A. Setting as large a goal as possible.
B. Keeping a record of difficulties overcome.
C. Avoiding any kind of failure.
D. Studying a whole chapter at one time.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Perseverance is inborn rather than learned.
B. Perseverance is a habit that can be built.
C. Failure should be avoided at any cost.
D. Talent matters more than effort.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. B 11. B
【解析】
【导语】文章主要介绍了复旦大学的研究发现,毅力并非天生,而是可以通过改变对失败的归因方式和培养习惯来建立。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“When they failed an exam, they were far more likely to describe the cause as something they could change — a poor revision plan, too little sleep — rather than as a fixed lack of ability.(当他们考试失败时,他们更可能把原因描述为可以改变的事情——糟糕的复习计划、睡眠太少——而不是固定的能力不足。)”可知,复旦大学的研究发现,有毅力的学生把挫折解释为可以改变的事情。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“This matters because explanation drives behaviour.(这很重要,因为解释驱动行为。)”可知,学生解释失败的方式之所以重要,是因为它驱动他们的行为。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“The second is to keep a written record of past difficulties that were overcome, because the memory of failure is far more vivid than the memory of recovery.(第二种是书面记录过去克服的困难,因为对失败的记忆远比恢复的记忆更生动。)”可知,记录克服过的困难是三种做法之一。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第四段中“Perseverance, then, is less a personality than a habit, and habits can be built.(既然如此,毅力与其说是一种性格,不如说是一种习惯,而习惯是可以建立的。)”以及最后一段中“But it does suggest something hopeful: the difference between giving up and going on is often not talent, but the story we tell ourselves about what went wrong.(但这确实暗示了一些充满希望的东西:放弃与坚持之间的区别往往不是天赋,而是我们对自己出了什么问题所讲述的故事。)”可知,文章主要论述了毅力是一种可以培养的习惯。
D
When the International Olympic Committee added the word “Together” to its old motto in 2021, some people dismissed it as a slogan. In fact, the change points to something that sport has always known and modern life keeps forgetting: excellence is not a solo achievement.
Consider the relay race. Four runners may each be faster than their opposite numbers and still lose, because the baton must be passed in a narrow zone, at speed, by two people who cannot look at each other. The race is won in the exchange. Coaches often say that a team of stars loses to a star team, and they are not being poetic; they are describing something measurable.
Yet schools and parents increasingly reward the individual. Trophies go to the fastest child; the highlight video shows the scorer, never the player who drew two defenders away so that the scorer was free. Over time this teaches talented young athletes a dangerous lesson: that their teammates are background. Research on youth sport in Britain found that players who were praised only for personal statistics were more likely to have quit the game by the age of sixteen, while those whose coaches noticed defensive work and encouragement stayed in it far longer.
None of this argues against ambition. The desire to run faster, jump higher and grow stronger is exactly what makes sport worth watching. But the motto’s original three words were never meant to describe a competition between runners; they describe a person’s struggle with his own limits. Adding “Together” simply makes the condition of that struggle visible. Nobody breaks a record alone.
12. What does the author say about the relay race?
A. It is won mainly by the fastest runner.
B. It is often decided by the baton exchange.
C. It requires runners to look at each other.
D. It is less popular than individual races.
13. What problem does the author see in youth sport?
A. Too much attention is paid to individual achievement.
B. Children are not trained hard enough.
C. Coaches care little about winning.
D. Teams have far too many members.
14. What did the research in Britain find?
A. Players praised only for personal statistics often quit early.
B. British teenagers are less athletic than before.
C. Defensive work matters more than scoring.
D. Coaches should avoid praising players.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the change of the Olympic motto?
A. Doubtful. B. Unconcerned. C. Approving. D. Critical.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. A 15. C
【解析】
【导语】文章主要论述了卓越并非个人成就,团队合作至关重要,并批评了过度奖励个人的现象。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Consider the relay race. Four runners may each be faster than their opposite numbers and still lose, because the baton must be passed in a narrow zone, at speed, by two people who cannot look at each other. The race is won in the exchange.(以接力赛为例。四名跑者可能每个人都比对手快,却仍然会输,因为接力棒必须在狭窄的区域内、以高速由两个无法对视的人传递。比赛的胜负在于交接。)”可知,接力赛的结果通常由交接棒过程决定。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Yet schools and parents increasingly reward the individual. Trophies go to the fastest child; the highlight video shows the scorer, never the player who drew two defenders away so that the scorer was free.(然而,学校和父母越来越奖励个人。奖杯颁给跑得最快的孩子;集锦视频展示得分手,从不展示那个吸引两名防守队员为得分手创造空当的球员。)”可知,作者认为青少年体育中的问题是过多关注个人成就。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Research on youth sport in Britain found that players who were praised only for personal statistics were more likely to have quit the game by the age of sixteen, while those whose coaches noticed defensive work and encouragement stayed in it far longer.(英国一项关于青少年体育的研究发现,只因个人数据受表扬的球员更可能在16岁前退出比赛,而那些教练关注防守工作和鼓励的球员则坚持得久得多。)”可知,研究发现只因个人数据受表扬的球员通常会过早退出。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“In fact, the change points to something that sport has always known and modern life keeps forgetting: excellence is not a solo achievement.(事实上,这一变化指向体育一直知道而现代生活却不断遗忘的东西:卓越不是个人成就。)”以及最后一段中“Adding “Together” simply makes the condition of that struggle visible. Nobody breaks a record alone.(加入“更团结”只是让这种奋斗的条件变得可见。没有人能独自打破纪录。)”可知,作者对奥林匹克格言中加入“Together”持认可和赞同态度。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余项。
It is easy to be funny when everything is going well. ____16____ Yet humour is often most useful exactly when life stops being amusing. Psychologists call this “coping humour”, and it is a skill, not a gift.
Coping humour is not about pretending that a problem does not exist. ____17____ Instead of “This is hopeless”, you might say, “Well, at least the roof only leaks when it rains.” The difficulty is still there, but it has been moved from a wall to a door.
Research suggests that this small shift matters. In one study, people who used gentle humour while describing a setback reported lower stress and were more likely to name a concrete next step. ____18____ They were also better company, which usually means that more practical help arrived.
So how do you build it? Start by collecting, not creating. Keep a note on your phone of the things that made you smile — a friend’s small mistake, a badly written sign, your own burnt toast. ____19____ When you need it, you will not have to invent cheerfulness; you will simply remember it.
Second, aim the joke at the situation, not at a person. Laughing at yourself is safe; laughing at someone else’s bad luck is not humour but cruelty, and it will cost you more than it gains. ____20____
A. Humour that hurts others is not humour at all.
B. On bad days, read the list before you do anything else.
C. It is about changing the size of the problem in your mind.
D. They felt calmer and, more importantly, they acted sooner.
E. Hard times are the best teachers of real courage.
F. Being funny is a natural talent that very few people have.
G. The trouble is that difficult moments are precisely when jokes seem to disappear.
【答案】16. G 17. C 18. D 19. B 20. A
【解析】
【导语】文章主要介绍了“应对型幽默”,阐述它不是天赋而是一种技能,能够帮助人们在困境中减轻压力、积极面对挫折,并讲解了培养这种幽默的方法与注意事项。
【16题详解】
根据前文“It is easy to be funny when everything is going well.(一切顺利的时候,幽默很容易做到。)”以及空后一句“Yet humour is often most useful exactly when life stops being amusing.(然而幽默往往在生活不再有趣的时候最有用。)”可知,空前讲顺境容易幽默,空后用yet转折引出逆境更需要幽默;故推知:空处要表达困境下人们很难讲笑话,承接前文,和后文构成转折逻辑,选项G“The trouble is that difficult moments are precisely when jokes seem to disappear.(问题就在于,恰恰在艰难时刻,玩笑似乎消失不见了。)”符合原文内容。
【17题详解】
根据前文“Coping humour is not about pretending that a problem does not exist.(应对型幽默并不是假装问题不存在。)”以及空后一句“Instead of “This is hopeless”, you might say, “Well, at least the roof only leaks when it rains.”(不说“这毫无希望”,你可以说“好吧,至少屋顶只在下雨时漏水”)”可知,空前有not about (不是……),后文用instead举例说明看待问题的新角度;not about要和it is about形成固定对照结构,选项C“It is about changing the size of the problem in your mind.(它是改变问题在你心中的分量。)”符合原文内容。
【18题详解】
根据前文“In one study, people who used gentle humour while describing a setback reported lower stress and were more likely to name a concrete next step.(在一项研究中,用温和幽默描述挫折的人压力更低,更有可能说出具体下一步计划。)”以及空后一句“They were also better company, which usually means that more practical help arrived.(他们也更讨人喜欢,这通常意味着能获得更多实际帮助。)”可知,主语they指代参与实验的人,also提示空处是研究带来的另一项积极结果,和前后文并列;选项D“They felt calmer and, more importantly, they acted sooner.(他们感觉更平静,更重要的是,行动更早。)”符合原文内容。
【19题详解】
根据前文“Keep a note on your phone of the things that made you smile — a friend’s small mistake, a badly written sign, your own burnt toast.(在手机上记下那些让你会心一笑的事——朋友的小失误、写得很糟糕的标牌、烤糊的面包。)”以及空后一句“When you need it, you will not have to invent cheerfulness; you will simply remember it.(当你需要的时候,不必强行制造快乐,只需要回忆起来就好。)”可知,空前说建立一个记录趣事清单,空后讲需要的时候使用;故推知:空处会继续说明如何使用这份清单,衔接前后文。选项B“On bad days, read the list before you do anything else.(日子艰难时,先读一读这份清单再做别的事。)”符合原文内容。
【20题详解】
根据前文“Laughing at yourself is safe; laughing at someone else’s bad luck is not humour but cruelty, and it will cost you more than it gains.(自嘲是安全的;嘲笑别人的不幸不是幽默而是残忍,得不偿失。)”可知,空前强调不要拿别人的不幸开玩笑;故推知:空处总结伤害他人的并不是真正的幽默,选项A“Humour that hurts others is not humour at all.(伤害他人的幽默根本算不上幽默。)”符合原文内容。

I yawned (打哈欠)as I got off the last step of the bus. I had woken early that morning, and had not been able to sleep on the long ride from Riverside High, thinking about that day’s race, the Eye Opener. I had never raced in a state-wide race before. Over thirty high school teams ran, along with quite a few colleges. The rest of my team and I unloaded the bus, and we relaxed and waited for our race patiently.
“Start warming up,” our coach told us, roughly forty-five minutes after we arrived. After finishing our stretches, we headed over to the starting line, eager for the race to begin.
The starter walked to the middle of the field. “There will be two commands,” his voice boomed, ‘‘Runners set, then the gun. If you hear another shot, return to the starting line to start again. ” My heart raced as I got my legs ready to race.
“Runners set!” the starter shouted Bam! The gun fired, and he rushed out of our way. Adrenaline (肾上腺素)rushed through my body as I raced through the mass of runners. As I rounded the first turn, my schoolmates greeted me with heartening shouts. Then, in what felt like only one minute, I arrived at the one mile mark.
“6’10”, a man declared as I ran by. I tried to ignore him, but my legs began to burn as I realized I had run a mile and still had two to go. I slowed down my pace, for I knew the second mile was the worst of all three. Minutes later, I felt horrible. My legs ached, feeling like lead blocks. My vision was clouded as sweat dropped down into my eyes, and my arms felt as if they would fall off if I swung them one more time. Just as I almost reached my limit, a boy passed me. He also seemed to have lost strength but soon he was a little ahead of me.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 I gathered up my strength to speed up but suddenly fell to the ground. My world was clouded by total darkness. How I wish the ground to crack and swallow me! I could feel everybody was staring at me, widening their mouths and not being able to utter a word. The sudden silence brought sharp pain in my knees and “failure” was the only word flashing in my mind. Then the silence was broken by a deep voice, “You won’t give up so easily, will you? ” The boy ahead of me turned back and pulled me up. “Let’s run to the finishing line together!” The second mile saw its end while we ran shoulder to shoulder.
In the last mile, seeing the athletes passing us one by one, I asked the boy to rum without me. “You can win a place if you go by yourself.” I looked at him in the eyes with sweat blurring my sight. The boy breathing heavily, drops of sweat rolled down his face. He shook his head saying,“Winning a place is not that important, isn’t it? ”. Then we smiled at each other as if we had been the only runners. The last mile seemed shorter and we were relieved when we passed the finishing line together with thunderous applause. I knew they cheered for us not for winning a race but for something more important.
