It was in a secondhand bookstore that I first encountered the magic of annotations (注释). Flipping through the pages of an old copy of The Great Gatsby, I discovered delicate notes penciled in margins (页边) — reflections on Gatsby’s dreams, sighs over Daisy’s choices, and even a tiny teardrop spot beside the tragic ending. The unmet reader’s emotions seemed to breathe through the paper, turning the book into a living dialogue across time.
On TikTok and Instagram, readers now share their creatively annotated books with color-marked notes that sometimes fill full pages. This trend has sparked a debate: Is the practice of annotations a bad habit or a beneficial effort?
Historically, annotations have been a powerful tool for deep learning. Leonardo da Vinci scribbled (涂鸦) thoughts on gravity in the Codex Arundel years before Galileo published his work on the subject, proving how annotations can harbor groundbreaking ideas. Similarly, writers like Herman Melville and Edgar Allan Poe used margins to refine their thoughts. In the academic community, annotations are celebrated for enhancing comprehension and critical thinking. In writing workshops, deep reading — including annotations — helps students express interpretations and maintain “learner independence”.
However, annotation styles online seem to differ widely from the annotations expected in the academic community. While some criticize them as overly decorative, their value lies in serving the reader’s purpose. Highlighting every piece of dialogue from your favorite character may seem unreasonable to an outsider, but that might help someone understand why they like that character or how the writer developed the character’s story. Romance readers are known to highlight, dog-ear and annotate their favorite romantic scenes.
I may be overly romanticizing secondhand books, but there’s nothing more heartfelt than finding a previous reader’s favorite kissing scene. If the book-related content creators want to make their bookmark, highlighter, sticky notes and gel pen match the cover of their favorite new science-fiction tale, that’s great. Scribbling in margins isn’t hurting anyone, so let them eat cake even if they dirty the page.
4. What did the author experience in a secondhand bookstore?
A. A popular exhibition. B. A shared hobby.
C. A striking explanation. D. A soulful connection.
5. What is the purpose of paragraph 3?
A. To popularize a writing style.
B. To show the value of annotating.
C. To serve as examples of an online trend.
D. To introduce an effective learning method.
6. Which of the following best describes online annotation styles?
A. Personalized. B. Uniform. C. Impractical. D. Systematic.
7. What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. He dislikes marks on book pages.
B. Secondhand book lovers are romanticists.
C. Annotators deserve understanding and respect.
D. Readers should mind their behaviors while reading.

“Tie an Italian’s hands behind his back, and he’ll be speechless.” This old joke conveys a rigid image of Italians: they are talkative and emotional, and all their arm movements supposedly go to prove it.
Susan Goldin-Meadow of the University of Chicago has a rather different view. Emotions come out in lots of ways: facial expressions, posture, tone of voice and so on. But people are doing something different when they use gestures (手势) with speech, which she sums up in the title of her new book, Thinking With Your Hands.
In fact, everyone gestures, not just Italians. Conference interpreters gesture in their little rooms, though no one is looking. People born blind gesture when they speak, including to each other. All this suggests that cognition is, to some extent, “embodied (具体化)”, and that thinking is not all done in your head. Gestures that accompany speech are a second channel of information. People who say they believe in gender equality but gesture with their hands lower are not indicating women’s shorter height; they can be shown to have prejudices (偏见) of which they may not be aware.
Child development is the focus of Goldin-Meadow’s book. Some students working on a difficult mathematics problem may gesture in a way that indicates they have already understood it. They should be taught differently from the ones whose gestures suggest that they are entirely at sea. Goldin-Meadow believes that gesturing could play a larger role in education by addressing the student’s needs better.
This is well explained in the book’s last section. Teachers are encouraged both to use gestures themselves and to observe those their students make. Parents are taught to fill in the word a child is most likely to be missing when they gesture rather than adding information. Children with language delays caused by brain injuries at birth, but who gesture as much as their peers, are likely to catch up verbally by the age of about 30 months. Those who gesture less are more likely to need early intervention.
8. Why is the joke mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To set a serious tone for this article.
B. To show that Italians are quiet and emotional.
C. To correct people’s wrong impression of Italians.
D. To illustrate the relationship between gestures and speech.
9. What do hand-lowering gestures by self-described supporters of gender equality suggest?
A. They help defend beliefs. B. They change social attitudes.
C. They improve public speaking. D. They may reflect unspoken opinions.
10. What do the underlined words “at sea” probably mean in paragraph 4?
A. Relaxed. B. Confused. C. Capable. D. Relieved.
11. What is the main idea of the book’s last section?
A. A summary of the book’s major research findings.
B. Evidence for gestures’ role in children’s storytelling.
C. Hands-on suggestions for caregivers concerning gestures.
D. Comparisons of different approaches to children’s learning.

It’s commonly acknowledged that our lives are ruled by algorithms (算法), but have we really collectively understood how they have transformed our culture and personality?
In Filterworld: How algorithms flattened culture, Kyle Chayka argues convincingly that the rise of algorithm-driven feeds, used everywhere online from Instagram to Spotify, has led to a more uniform culture. Our tastes and desires increasingly don’t belong to us, but to algorithms that are designed to keep people engaged at all costs. If the collection of our tastes truly shapes our entire personality, then this loss is more psychologically damaging than it first appears. Aimlessly scrolling through Netflix or TikTok may seem harmless, but over days, months or years, we lose touch with what we like and enjoy.
Taste-making algorithms are inescapable. Chayka shows this by working through all corners of life: what we wear (TikTok), where we eat (Google Maps), music we listen to (Spotify), even who we date or marry (Tinder). This universe of algorithm-driven decisions has society-wide implications: “It extends to influence our physical spaces, our cities, and the routes we move through… flattening them in turn.” No one gets out of the Filterworld untouched.
If you’re lucky enough not to need any sort of algorithm-based system for your work, then you have the option to step back from algorithms for a while. But if your friend suggests a film recommended on X/Twitter or you feel the need to buy those shoes suddenly everyone has started wearing after social media advertisements, what are you to do? It all feels fruitless.
This Filterworld may be inescapable, but there is hope. You can start by engaging more with the media you do choose to consume. This could mean reading up about a film you watched or paying artists you like directly. Even the thoughtful act of recommending an album to a friend is more rewarding than a random TikTok feed. As Chayka says, resistance to algorithms “requires an act of willpower, a choice to move through the world in a different way.”
12. What is Kyle Chayka’s opinion on algorithms?
A. They improve our tastes. B. They make our cultures more alike.
C. They help to identify our personality. D. They contribute to physical problems.
13. What does the underlined part in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The society with advanced technology. B. The world without social media platforms.
C. The network of algorithm-driven decisions. D. The community free from algorithmic influence.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards resisting the influence of algorithms?
A. Unconcerned. B. Supportive. C. Negative. D. Unclear.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Algorithms: Cultural Takeover B. The secret of Algorithms
C. Social Media: Cultural Messenger D. The Rise of Digital Platforms

Bob Lee is a retired teacher who loves writing handwritten letters more than most people love their kids. Every day, he writes to his daughter Lisa. Moved by her father’s passion, Lisa posted a video online, asking if anyone needed a little kindness from a warm-hearted retired teacher. To her surprise, hundreds of people replied. She then founded the “Dad Letter Project”, inviting other kind dads such as Mark to write to strangers who are sad, stressed, or simply longing for some fatherly comfort.
Thousands of miles away, Amy Woods was struggling on the fourth anniversary of her father’s death. Her father was an artistic and open-minded man and passed away in 2021. They had a complicated relationship, and Amy was filled with lasting love as well as regret. She had long kept an old photo of her father in a small box. Every time she looked at it, those mixed feelings would come flooding back, yet she seldom showed it to anyone.
One day, she sent a short message to the project. She was only hoping for a little comfort, but she was very guarded around strangers and had no real hope that anyone would care.
Weeks later, a letter from Mark finally arrived. At her kitchen table, she read his words: “As a dad, I am proud of you — the way you wonder and think about your dad is really special.” Tears streamed down her face.
Deeply moved, Amy decided she would write back. She pulled out a piece of paper, with Mark’s letter lying beside her.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;

D 5. B 6. A 7. C

根据第一段“It was in a secondhand bookstore that I first encountered the magic of annotations (注释).
根据第三段“Historically, annotations have been a powerful tool for deep learning.
根据第四段“However, annotation styles online seem to differ widely from the annotations expected in the academic community.
根据最后一段“I may be overly romanticizing secondhand books, but there’s nothing more heartfelt than finding a previous reader’s favorite kissing scene. If the book-related content creators want to make their bookmark, highlighter, sticky notes and gel pen match the cover of their favorite new science-fiction tale, that’s great. Scribbling in margins isn’t hurting anyone, so let them eat cake even if they dirty the page. (或许我把二手书想得太过浪漫,但没有什么比读到前任读者标注的亲吻场景更真挚动人。如果读书博主想要搭配书签、荧光笔、便利贴、中性笔,来搭配自己喜爱的全新科幻小说封面,这完全没问题。在页边写写画画并不会伤害任何人,就算把书页弄脏,也不妨随他们去。)”可知,作者认为在书上批注没有任何坏处,批注者值得理解与尊重。
C
D 9. D 10. B 11. C

根据第一段中的“Tie an Italian’s hands behind his back, and he’ll be speechless.” This old joke conveys a rigid image of Italians: they are talkative and emotional, and all their arm movements supposedly go to prove it.(把意大利人的双手绑在背后,他就说不出话了。
根据第三段中的“People who say they believe in gender equality but gesture with their hands lower are not indicating women’s shorter height; they can be shown to have prejudices of which they may not be aware.(那些声称自己支持性别平等但手势位置偏低的人,并不是在暗示女性身高更矮;研究表明他们可能存有自己都没有意识到的偏见。)”
根据第四段中的“Some students working on a difficult mathematics problem may gesture in a way that indicates they have already understood it. They should be taught differently from the ones whose gestures suggest that they are entirely at sea.(一些在钻研一道数学难题的学生,可能会做出手势,表明他们已经理解了题目。应当用不同的方式教导他们,而另一些学生的手势则显示他们完全at sea。)” 可知,前后形成对比,一部分学生已经理解,另一部分学生感到困惑,由此可知,画线短语的意思为“困惑的”,与confused意思相近。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第五段中的“Teachers are encouraged both to use gestures themselves and to observe those their students make. Parents are taught to fill in the word a child is most likely to be missing when they gesture rather than adding information.(教师被鼓励自身使用手势,同时观察学生做出的手势。家长要学会在孩子打手势时,补全孩子最可能想说却没说出的词,而不是额外增添信息。)”可知,书籍最后一部分给老师和家长这类看护者提供了有关手势运用的实操建议。

B 13. C 14. B 15. A

One of the most representative examples ____37____ (be) the skywell, or tianjing, the open inner courtyard ____38____ (wide) employed in Huizhou-style dwellings of the Ming and Qing dynasties. In ancient southern China, ____39____ summers are hot and humid, the compact skywell was designed ____40____ (admit) daylight into deep rooms, encourage natural air circulation, and collect rainwater. Warm air inside the house rises and escapes upwards, while cooler air flows downwards to refresh the interior. This passive cooling method required no electricity and helped residents stay ____41____ (refresh) throughout the long summer.
This clever concept has been revived by contemporary architects, with many modern office buildings, ____42____ (museum) and residential complexes now integrating skywells into their layouts. One possible version:
Dear Mr. Green,
I’m sorry to learn that you feel discouraged and think that we are not fond of your class because we seldom raise our hands. As a matter of fact, we really appreciate your lessons. We hesitate to speak up largely because we fear making mistakes and feeling embarrassed; this fear is rooted in our cultural background.
I would like to offer a few suggestions. Could you please give us more time to organize our thoughts after you ask us a question? Besides, group discussions can effectively encourage us to express our opinions.
I hope these suggestions will be helpful.
Yours,

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;

With her pen in hand, Amy hesitated, unsure whether she could trust a stranger.

One possible version:
With her pen in hand, Amy hesitated, unsure whether she could trust a stranger. She had built a high wall around her heart to hide her pain and wondered why she should open up to a stranger. But Mark’s warm words made her guard slowly break down. After a long pause, she gathered her courage to write. She shared precious memories of her father and her sadness over their imperfect relationship. She took out a photocopy and put it into the envelope, as if passing on her hard-won trust. Then she sealed the letter and mailed it, hoping it would reach Mark.
Seeing the copy of the small old photo in the envelope, Mark felt a sudden warmth. He could feel the great trust hidden behind this simple photo. He knew Amy must have been brave enough to share such private memories. Deeply moved, he showed the letter and photo to Lisa and Bob, who were also touched by their fragile yet precious bond. They realized their project was not merely about offering comfort but a two-way journey of healing. Mark wrote back soon, inspired by Amy’s courage. As their story shows, sincere kindness can break down the wall between strangers.
