Well, guys, the school year is nearly over. What's the most interesting thing you've done?

JESS

I had an amazing time working on a city farm. City farms are a great way for people to get experience of life in the country. There I learned about animals and plants. Anyway, I took care of the horses on the farm. I was really proud of myself when I helped an excited girl ride a horse for the first time. It really meant a lot to her and to me!

MATT

I made my first film this year using my phone. My friends supported me a lot. First, I had to think of an idea. Everyone said the film needed to be short and simple. In the end, I decided to make a film called Into Space. It's now on the school website.

ALI

In April, my uncle invited me to climb the highest mountain in my city. It might take us about four hours to climb it, so we set off at about 7 a.m. to avoid climbing in the heat of the midday sun. It was a lot more challenging than I had expected. I couldn't move my legs after two hours' walk. Luckily, I didn't give up halfway. The views from the top were really fantastic! What an important lesson!page number 0

As winter comes, hands can easily get cold. Thick gloves might be a good choice, but sometimes wearing them is inconvenient. However, this was not a problem for ancient Chinese people, who had a tool to warm their hands: hand warmers.

There is one joke story about its invention. Emperor Yang from the Sui Dynasty visited Jiangsu in winter. Because of the cold, a local official asked craftsmen(工匠) to make a small warmer for the emperor that could be held in his hands. So, the hand warmer was created. By the Song Dynasty, the warmers had become popular among the common(普通的) people. Skills for producing the tool were widely used in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Many poets from this period kept a record of using hand warmers.

In the early days, copper(铜) was generally used in the production process. It was more suitable than silver and porcelain because it could transfer(传导) heat better, while reducing the risk of breakage or corrosion(腐蚀). Inside a hand warmer, there were coals, some of which were mixed with flowers, giving off a nice smell when burned.

Ancient hand warmers had different designs. Round, square and octagonal(八边形的) shapes were typical, and there were also some fashionable shapes which looked like pumpkins, flowers and turtle shells. The patterns on the warmers would usually be animals or symbols with good meanings, such as deer, flowers or the Chinese characters for long life. This combination of art and practicality made the hand warmer not just a tool, but a cultural symbol of elegance and wisdom, reflecting the ancient people's pursuit of beauty in daily life.

A spoon of pickles(榨菜) can sometimes make a meal taste better. Recently, a new type of pickle is being discussed: “digital pickled vegetables”. It stands for the videos people watch while eating that make their food more delicious.

①     The topic received more than 16 million clicks on Sina Weibo and about 100,000 people joined in the discussion. Instead of having a good time with friends and family during a meal, many young people in China keep their eyes on TV shows or short videos. Many believe that their food is tastier with the digital pickles.

②     Can this habit influence your diet? According to a research paper published in 2019, you may eat more without noticing it. The international research team asked 62 volunteers to follow different eating habits on four different days. The habits included eating while looking at the mobile phone, reading magazines and without distraction(干扰). After studying their diets, the team discovered that eating with a distraction increased calorie intake by about 15 per cent.

③     To find out the reason, the team invited two groups of people: one group ate while listening to sounds about another person eating and the other just listened to sounds that helped them imagine themselves eating. The results showed that the second group ate less since they paid more attention to their meals. When eating with the “digital pickles”, our attention can be distracted, which leads to eating more than expected.

④     A research project led by the University of Sussex, UK, pointed out that activities which need lots of attention trick many people into overeating. The team invited 120 people to do different tasks while providing them with drinks and snacks. “Our study shows that if you're eating or drinking while your attention is distracted by a difficult task, it is less possible for you to tell how full you feel,” one of the researchers Martin Yeomans explained.

(  )8. Which of the following is a kind of digital pickles?

A. Drinks.     B. Snacks.   C. Videos.    D. Tasks.

(  )9. What can we know from Paragraph 3?

A. Eating with digital pickles may make people get fatter.

B. Reading magazines while eating is a good eating habit.

C. Different eating habits made little difference to people's diet.

D. Volunteers were divided into four groups by the research team.

(  )10. Why did the second group in the research eat less?

A. They listened to sounds about another person eating.

B. They didn't like the food.

C. They paid more attention to their meals.

D. They were not hungry.

(  )11. Where can you put the sentence “This works not only for eating meals but also other difficult tasks as well.”?

A. ①      B. ②      C. ③      D. ④

D

In Flanders, a small town in Belgium, lived a little boy called Nello. He became an orphan(孤儿) at the age of two. Then he lived with his grandpa in a small house. Life was harder for them.

Their life depended on Nello's grandpa. Every morning, the old man would collect fresh milk from one house to another. He had to load(装载) the milk on a cart and send it to the city. Growing up a little older, Nello would try to help his grandpa to travel from Flanders to the city.page number 1
