Roger Bannister, born in Harrow, England, showed great talent for running at an early age. University education was beyond the reach of his working-class parents, but he was determined to enter one of Britain’s top universities and build a career in medicine.
Thanks to his outstanding academic excellence, Bannister won a scholarship to Oxford University. His amazing speed on the track quickly brought him attention and recognition from sports media. Surprisingly, he refused to take part in the 1948 London Olympics. Instead, he chose to focus on his medical studies and career. By 1951, Bannister claimed the British mile championship and felt eager to chase Olympic glory. Unfortunately, a sudden change of schedule forced him to compete without enough rest between races, and he finished fourth in the 1500-meter race at the 1952 Olympics.
To break the four-minute mile barrier, Bannister kept studying medicine full-time while spending only 45 minutes every single day exclusively on training. On May 6, 1954, at Oxford, his strong perseverance finally paid off. At age 25, Bannister made history, crossing the finishing line in 3:59.4. When the announcer read out the time, the rest of the announcement was drowned by the loud cheers of the crowd. In the well-known “Mile of the Century” race, Bannister outpaced Australian runner John Landy, clocking 3:58.8 against Landy’s 3:59.6. Both runners finished under four minutes. His autobiography The First Four Minutes came out in 1955.
Bannister’s contribution to medical science was also remarkable. However, the spirit and legacy of his four-minute mile remain deeply inspirational, touching people not only in his own time but also for later generations.
4. Why didn’t Bannister take part in the 1948 London Olympics?
A. He lacked enough training for the competition.
B. His family couldn’t afford his travel to London.
C. He was not recognized by the sports media at that time.
D. He preferred to devote himself to his medical studies.
5. What can we infer from the 1952 Olympic 1500-meter race?
A. Bannister was fully prepared for the tight race schedule.
B. He had expected to win a gold medal in this event.
C. Poor arrangement of events negatively affected his performance.
D. Bannister gave up the race because of tiredness.
6. What can we learn about the “Mile of the Century” race?
A. John Landy beat Bannister and won the race. B. Both runners broke the four-minute mile barrier.
C. Bannister finished fourth in this race. D. It was held at Oxford University in 1952.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To introduce the development of mile running in the 1950s.

In the digital era, where social media floods with ceaseless sharing, 26-year-old illustrator Lina from Hangzhou stands as a striking example. She regularly posts artworks and travel snapshots on Instagram but seldom replies to comments or engages in private conversations. “I love sharing fragments (碎片) of my life, yet building deep connections with strangers feels emotionally exhausting”, she admits. Lina’s attitude represents a growing trend among today’s youth: light socializing, a pattern that prioritizes self-expression over intensive emotional bonds in the virtual world.
Sociologist Min Li observes that social media, once a hub (中心) for developing relationships, has changed into a “self-showcase” platform for the younger generation. Instead of seeking active interactions, they share content like scenic photos or daily routines, with little expectation of feedback. Actions such as casually unfollowing, blocking strangers or using 24-hour disappearing posts show their wish to avoid burdensome “emotional labor” from shallow virtual ties. This shift comes from their desire to escape overwhelming pressure from empty digital interactions.
While critics dismiss light socializing as a sign of “emotional coldness”, it actually reflects a thoughtful adaptation. Psychologist Lu Chen argues that by embracing this approach, young people regain control over their online space — sharing freely without the anxiety of meeting others’ expectations. Even social platforms have evolved to meet this need: many now offer “silent modes”, such as hidden interaction records and one-way posting features, acknowledging the widespread acceptance of light socializing.
In a world tightly bound by digital connections, light socializing strikes a delicate balance between self-expression and privacy protection. It is not a refusal of social bonds but a wise pursuit of healthier, more autonomous online engagement. This trend shows the younger generation’s maturity in safeguarding their mental well-being, representing a forward-looking and thoughtful approach to modern social interactions.
8. What does Lina do on social media?
A. She only posts artworks. B. She shares life but skips deep chats.
C. She never replies to comments. D. She focuses on building deep online bonds.
9. What does the underlined word “burdensome” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Rewarding. B. Complicated. C. Necessary. D. Tiring.
10. What can we infer about “light socializing”?
A. It encourages safe online engagement. B. It makes young people emotionally cold.
C. It relies mainly on platforms’ silent modes. D. It abandons social bonds to protect mental health.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Keep the Digital Distance. B. Keep Silent Mode On.
C. Social Media: “Self-showcase” Platform. D. Emotional Coldness: Online Life’s Secret.
B 9. D 10. A 11. A

通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“Lina’s attitude represents a growing trend among today’s youth: light socializing, a pattern that prioritizes self-expression over intensive emotional bonds in the virtual world.(莉娜的态度代表当今年轻人中不断增长的趋势:轻社交,一种在虚拟世界优先自我表达而非建立深度情感联结的模式。)”以及第四段中的“In a world tightly bound by digital connections, light socializing strikes a delicate balance between self-expression and privacy protection. It is not a refusal of social bonds but a wise pursuit of healthier, more autonomous online engagement.(在这个被数字连接紧密捆绑的世界,轻社交在自我表达和隐私保护之间达成微妙平衡。它不是拒绝社交联结,而是对更健康、更自主线上交往方式的明智追求。)”可知,文章围绕轻社交展开,提倡在网络中保持恰当距离,“Keep the Digital Distance(保持数字距离)”概括了文章的主题,最适合作为标题。

There is no doubt that artificial intelligence — or AI — has become an important part of our lives. It is no longer just a thing of science fiction: it’s an incredible technological breakthrough that has changed the way we live. But there are fears that AI has become too intelligent and could be a threat to humanity.
This claim might sound extreme, but a letter signed by more than 1,000 technology experts, including Tesla boss Elon Musk, called on the world to press pause on the development of more advanced AI because of the risks. Estonian billionaire Jaan Tallinn, for example, who helped develop communication app Skype, thinks we should be cautious. And The Future of Life Institute, a not-for-profit organisation, says that there should be a temporary pause in advanced AI development, saying that “AI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity.”
This pessimistic outlook is supported by a report by investment bank Goldman Sachs that says AI could replace the equivalent of 300 million full-time jobs. But it may also mean new jobs and a productivity boom. We may argue that AI such as chatbots can help us. State-of-the-art ChatGPT, for example, has been helping some students write assignments. AI is allowing computers to think or act in a more human way. And machine learning means computers can learn what to do without being given explicit instructions. The technology is impressive, but as it starts to think for itself, will it outsmart us?
Some people are more optimistic. AI advocates say the tech is already delivering real social and economic benefits for people. Meanwhile, the founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, has called on governments to work with industry to “limit the risks” of AI. But he says the technology could save lives, particularly in poorer countries. He says, “Just as the world needs its brightest people focused on its biggest problems, we will need to focus the world’s best AIs on its biggest problems.” If this happens, maybe humanity will have a future.
12. Why did over 1,000 tech experts sign the letter to pause advanced AI development?
A. AI has already taken the place of most full-time jobs worldwide.
B. They worry about the potential dangers brought by advanced AI.
C. AI systems have become as smart as human beings and caused social chaos.
D. They believe AI technology has no practical value for human society.
13. What can we learn from the Goldman Sachs report mentioned in the text?
A. AI’s influence on employment has two sides.
B. AI will only create brand-new jobs for human beings.
C. AI will definitely cause a sharp drop in productivity.
D. ChatGPT is the most powerful AI tool in the world.
14. What can we infer from the text about different people’s opinions?
A. Jaan Tallinn believes AI will bring a productivity boom to society.
B. Elon Musk holds the view that AI can help solve problems in poor countries.
C. The Future of Life Institute suggests stopping AI research forever.
D. Bill Gates thinks we should make good use of AI while controlling its risks.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards AI according to the text?
A. Doubtful and negative B. Uninterested and critical
C. Enthusiastic and supportive D. Objective and balanced
B 13. A 14. D 15. D

根据第三段中的“This pessimistic outlook is supported by a report by investment bank Goldman Sachs that says AI could replace the equivalent of 300 million full-time jobs. But it may also mean new jobs and a productivity boom.(投资银行高盛的一份报告印证了这一悲观观点,报告称人工智能可能会取代相当于3亿个全职岗位。但这也可能意味着会产生新岗位和生产力的大幅提升。)”可知,人工智能对就业的影响具有两面性。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Meanwhile, the founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, has called on governments to work with industry to “limit the risks” of AI.
固定搭配award sth. to sb.意为“把某物颁发给某人”,被动结构为sth. be awarded to sb.,所以此处为介词to。

A Hero in My Heart
The hero who has been inspiring me most is my mother, an ordinary community worker devoted to helping people around her.
Last winter, a severe snowstorm swept through our neighborhood. An elderly neighbor living alone fell ill and was trapped at home. On learning the news, my mom braved the heavy snow to send her to hospital immediately and attended her day and night until her family arrived.
My mom’s selflessness teaches me that true heroism lies in small acts of kindness. I will follow her example and pass warmth to people in need.

It was a burning hot afternoon, well over 30 degrees. Driving north, I saw an elderly woman walking south with a walker (助行器), loaded with groceries. I had seen her before, and each time I felt guilty for not offering her a ride.
But how could I stop on such a busy road without blocking the traffic? That excuse always silenced my guilt — but only temporarily.
This time, the guilt got to me. I turned my car around, slowed down and rolled down the window. “Need a ride?” I called out.
The woman looked worn out, sweat running down her face. I got out, put her walker and bags into the trunk (汽车后备箱) and helped her into the seat. She climbed in, holding a small purse. “Bless you, child,” she said.
Her name was Ida. She worked as a bagger at a nearby grocery store and had missed the last bus. When we passed a bridge where some homeless people lived, she rolled down the window and called out, “Y’ all” come by later. It’s spaghetti night tonight.”
As we drove on, I realized we were heading for the “wrong side of town”. It was getting dark, and I began to feel uneasy. Finally, she pointed to an old apartment building.
Several noisy young men in their early twenties had gathered around the entrance, motorcycles parked along the curb. They wore heavy boots, cigarettes hanging from their lips. One of them caught my eye: a black hoodie (连帽衫), bushy hair to his shoulders, tattooed arms (有纹身的手臂) folded across his chest, a small earring glinting in his ear. He was staring through the falling dusk — too intently — and smiling, but something about that smile unsettled me.
Hoodlum (小混混)! I thought. I dropped her off and drove away as fast as I could.
It was dark now, and I was not quite sure of the way home. Suddenly, the roar of a motorcycle broke the silence behind me. I recognized the young man at once — the tattooed arms, the bushy hair, that unsettling smile. He didn’t overtake me but kept pace, waving for me to stop. No way would I stop for a stranger on a deserted (空无一人的) street!
I sped up, but he raced after me. In a panic, I reached for my purse to call 911 — only to find the seat beside me empty. My purse was gone!
“Darn! She stole my purse!” I was furious. So much for my act of kindness.
Meanwhile, the young man was still right outside my window, waving something in his hand.
Paragraph 1: Just then, my eye fell on an unfamiliar purse on the floor of my car.

Paragraph 2: I pulled over to the curb and the young man stopped by the passenger side.

Paragraph 1: Just then, my eye fell on an unfamiliar purse on the floor of my car. A wave of shame washed over me in an instant. It was Ida’s worn little purse, not mine. I had jumped to the ridiculous conclusion that she had stolen my purse, but she had merely dropped hers when she climbed out of the car. It dawned on me that the young man on the motorcycle had been chasing me all the way to return my purse, which must have slipped off my seat when I helped Ida with her groceries. My face burned with embarrassment at my own shallow judgment.
Paragraph 2: I pulled over to the curb and the young man stopped by the passenger side. He held out my purse with a casual smile, explaining that Ida had spotted it on the back seat right after I left and asked him, her grandson, to catch up and return it. I stammered out a sincere apology for judging him by his tattoos and rough appearance. He just laughed it off, saying it was nothing. That day I learned a priceless lesson: never judge a book by its cover. True kindness and decency shine from within, regardless of one’s appearance.

B. To describe the fierce competition between Bannister and Landy.
C. To present Roger Bannister’s legendary achievements as an athlete and doctor.
D. To prove the influence of the four-minute mile on modern sports.
