Unit 5 Revealing nature
语言输入:教材引导学生关注生物与科研词汇(species / habitat / sense / migrate / adapt / evidence)、说明能力的句式(be able to / is thought to / it has been found that),以及表示因果与程度的表达(which allows it to / so that / up to),并提示说明文多用一般现在时与被动语态。

The Bird That Sleeps in the Air
The common swift spends most of its life in the air. It eats, drinks and even sleeps while flying.
Scientists recently found that swifts can sleep with one half of the brain at a time, like dolphins. The other half stays awake to watch for danger and to keep the bird from falling. Some swifts stay in the air for ten months without landing.
When I read this, the sky above my school felt different: full of small, sleepless travellers.

Ten Minutes Behind the Gym
Our biology teacher asked us to count the living things in a square metre behind the gym.
We found ants, a beetle, two kinds of grass, a spider's web and a small plant with purple flowers that nobody could name. Then a bee arrived, and the whole square metre became a story about food and shelter.
I had walked past that wall for two years. I had never once looked down. Now I take the long way round, just to look.

Nature Has Answers
Hello, everyone. We often invent things and then ask nature to cope with them.
A kingfisher's beak enters water with almost no splash; engineers copied it to design a quieter train. A lotus leaf stays clean because of tiny bumps, and now paint and cloth do the same. Nature has been testing designs for millions of years. Neither of these inventions began in a laboratory.
So before we invent, let's look outside the window. The answers are already out there. Thank you!

Dear Chris,
You asked about the nature reserve near my hometown. It was set up to protect the Chinese alligator.
The reserve covers about 1,500 hectares of wetland, with ponds, reeds and small islands. In spring you can see the alligators sunbathing on the banks, and egrets standing in the shallow water. Only a few hundred remain in the wild, so visitors must keep to the paths.
If you come in May, I'll take you. Bring binoculars.
Yours,
Li Hua
