Unit 1 Growing up
语言输入:教材引导学生关注表达成长与变化的词汇(responsibility / depend on / take care of / realise)、过去与现在的对比句式(used to / no longer / since then),以及心理描写的表达(I suddenly understood / it hit me that),并提示叙事用一般过去时,感悟部分用一般现在时。

The Summer I Grew Up
The summer I turned fifteen, my mother went to hospital for an operation, and I became the cook of the family.
My first soup was so salty that my father drank a glass of water after every spoon. I learned to taste as I cooked, to write down what worked, and to shop with a list. By August I could make six dishes, including my mother's tomato and egg.
She came home thinner and asked for my soup. When she said it tasted right, I understood what growing up means.

A Smaller Shoe
Last winter my father asked me to help him read a message on his phone, because the letters were too small.
I enlarged the text and showed him how to do it. He wrote the steps in a notebook, slowly, the way I once copied English words. For the first time I saw him as a person who was also learning, and getting tired.
That evening I did not argue about washing dishes. Growing up, I think, begins when you notice your parents' hands.

What Growing Up Really Means
Hello, everyone. We often measure growing up by birthdays, height or the right to stay out late.
I think it is quieter than that. It is remembering to bring your own umbrella, apologising first, and noticing that your mother is tired. It is also knowing when to ask for help—which is harder. It is also learning to say sorry without being asked.
So let's grow up a little today, in one small, unphotographed way. Thank you!

Dear Chris,
You say you feel stuck between being a child and an adult. Most of us feel the same.
My advice is to take on one real responsibility—not a big one. Cook dinner on Fridays, or manage the family shopping money for a month. When people depend on you in a small way, you stop waiting to feel ready.
And keep one childish thing you love. Growing up does not require you to give up everything.
Yours,
Li Hua
