First, let's look at this picture. It seems to be a busy shopping scene. Can you guess what the people might be doing here? Take a moment to think about it.
‹#›
1. Analyze the Bold Modal Verbs
01. An Order
Expresses a strong command or direct instruction (e.g., "You must finish the task on time.")
02. A Request
A polite way to ask for help or action (e.g., "Could you pass me the dictionary?")
03. Ability
Indicates what someone is capable of doing (e.g., "She can speak three foreign languages.")
04. Possibility
Suggests something may or might happen (e.g., "It might rain this afternoon, so take an umbrella.")
1.7.2013
Now let's move on to grammar. Look at the sentences in your textbook. The words in bold are modal verbs. What do they indicate? An order, a request, ability, or possibility?
‹#›
2.Will the meaning of sentence (a) change if we replace “could” with “must” or “might”?
01. Original: could
Implies possibility or potential. It suggests the book has the capacity to be perfect, but it’s not a confirmed fact. This conveys a gentle, speculative tone, leaving room for other possibilities.
02. Replace with: must
Expresses strong certainty or logical deduction. It implies the book is definitely perfect, leaving no room for doubt. This shifts the tone to a firm, conclusive statement.
03. Replace with: might
Suggests a weaker possibility than ‘could’. It conveys uncertainty and tentativeness, implying the book may or may not be perfect, making the statement more hesitant.
1.7.2013
Consider sentence (a): 'That is why Letters from Father Christmas could be the perfect book...'. What happens if we replace 'could' with 'must' or 'might'? Does the meaning change? Let's analyze.
‹#›
3. What happens if we change “must” and “might” in sentences(b) and (c) into “could”?
Must → Could
Original: Implies obligation or strong certainty (e.g., "You must finish it").
Change: Shifts to ability, permission or possibility (e.g., "You could finish it"). The tone softens from strict to suggestive.
Might → Could
Original: Indicates uncertain possibility (e.g., "It might rain").
Change: Expands to polite request or theoretical possibility (e.g., "Could you help?"). Adds a layer of social interaction.
Key Takeaway
"Could" is more versatile than "must" or "might". It bridges logic and social interaction, making it ideal for polite suggestions, hypothetical scenarios, and softening strong statements in daily communication.
💡 Practical Tip: If you want to sound less direct or more polite, replacing "must" with "could" is a simple yet effective way to adjust your tone in conversations.
1.7.2013
Now look at sentences (b) and (c). What if we change 'must' and 'might' to 'could'? How does this affect the meaning of the sentences? Let's explore this further.

Traditionally, people send written invitations for formal events such as weddings. Similarly, these invitations are answered in writing. For more informal events, however, spoken invitations are more common.
Remember to arrive on time if you accept the invitation. Depending on regional customs, it may be acceptable to be 15 to 30 minutes late. It is not advisable to be early, as the host may not be ready.
