At 5, she learned to speak English. But she didn’t know how to read and write — let alone how to fit in at school or communicate with classmates. Mrs. Lewis, Chanthaphone’s second-grade teacher, changed everything. She taught her students that it was OK if they did not know English and that it was all right for them to use words in their home language to explain how they were feeling or thinking. Chanthaphone got more and more confidence and wanted to do what her teacher did in the future. Now, at 26, Chanthaphone is an English teacher at Fort Worth ISD’s William Monnig Middle School. Like Mrs. Lewis, Chanthaphone aims to help her non-English-speaking students to gain the confidence they need to fulfill their potential in life. At the beginning of each school year, Chanthaphone recounts her story to her new classes. She tells them she knows what it feels like not to want to participate in class. She reminds them that she once sat in her seat like them and felt different because of her upbringing. But she stresses that’s what makes each of them special. Her students, though, are usually unconvinced. She has to take out photos of her graduating from college and tell them about her parents and what her school was like. Then it finally clicks. In the classroom, Chanthaphone allows students to communicate in whichever way they feel most comfortable. For some, it may be raising their hands and voicing their thoughts. For others, it may be writing their thoughts on a piece of paper and handing it to Chanthaphone. However, Chanthaphone does encourage her students to go out of their comfort zone. She wants them to work with students they don’t know because teamwork and collaboration (协作) with unfamiliar people are important. “I’ve always wanted to be the teacher who supports students and advocates for them in and outside the classroom,” Chanthaphone said. “When I get notes or see posts on social media from parents talking about previous teachers, including me, I feel like my goal has been completed.” 4. What do we know about Mrs. Lewis? A. She is inspiring. B. She is ambitious. C. She is knowledgeable. D. She is demanding. 5. What can be inferred about Chanthaphone’s students when she first tells them her story? A. They are deeply moved and begin to share their own stories. B. They find it hard to believe that she once felt like them. C. They refuse to communicate with her in class. D. They are eager to know more about her college life. 6. What does Chanthaphone focus on in class? A. Students’ strong curiosity. B. Students’ mental health. C. Students’ unique talent. D. Students’ communicating ability. 7. What do we learn about Chanthaphone from the last paragraph? A. She only cares about her students’ academic performance. B. She values the recognition from parents and students. C. She finds it difficult to achieve her teaching goal. D. She prefers to communicate with her parents on social media. 【答案】4. A 5. B 6. D 7. B 【解析】 【导语】本文主要讲述Chanthaphone受小学老师的鼓励,长大后成为教师,用自身经历帮助母语非英语的学生建立自信。 【4题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段中的“Mrs. Lewis, Chanthaphone’s second-grade teacher, changed everything. She taught her students that it was OK if they did not know English and that it was all right for them to use words in their home language to explain how they were feeling or thinking.(Chanthaphone二年级的刘易斯老师改变了一切。她教导她的学生,倘若他们不懂英语,那没有问题;他们可以使用母语词汇来说明自己的感受与想法。)”可知,刘易斯老师激励了Chanthaphone,是鼓舞人心的老师。 【5题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“At the beginning of each school year, Chanthaphone recounts her story to her new classes.(每学年伊始,Chanthaphone都会向新班级讲述自己的故事。)”以及第四段中的“Her students, though, are usually unconvinced.(然而她的学生通常并不相信。)”可知,学生一开始很难相信她曾经和自己有相同的感受。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段中的“In the classroom, Chanthaphone allows students to communicate in whichever way they feel most comfortable.(在课堂上,Chanthaphone允许学生用自己觉得最自在的方式交流。)”以及第六段中的“She wants them to work with students they don’t know because teamwork and collaboration with unfamiliar people are important.(她希望学生和不熟悉的同学合作,因为和陌生人团队协作十分重要。)”可知,Chanthaphone在课堂重点培养学生的交流能力。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的““I’ve always wanted to be the teacher who supports students and advocates for them in and outside the classroom,” Chanthaphone said. “When I get notes or see posts on social media from parents talking about previous teachers, including me, I feel like my goal has been completed.”(Chanthaphone说:“我一直想成为这样一名老师:在课堂内外都支持学生、为学生发声。每当我收到留言,或是在社交媒体上看到家长们谈起曾经的老师,其中也包括我时,我就觉得自己实现了目标。”)”可知,她很看重家长与学生对自己的认可。 C Social media use has been linked to mental health problems in the teenagers. But a new study from England argues that the issue may be more complex than experts think. The new research interviewed 10, 000 teenagers, who reported the frequency they used social media. More than three times daily was considered “very frequent.” But the researchers, for the first time, went a step further to investigate what kind of websites the teenagers frequented. They found that, in both sexes, very frequent visits to social media with negative (负面的) contents was associated with greater mental depression and anxiety. “Our results suggest social media itself doesn't cause harm, but that frequent use may disrupt (中断) activities that positively influence mental health such as sleeping and exercising, while increasing exposure of young people to harmful contents," said study co author Russell Viner of the UCL Institute of Child Health, It's an important discovery. J ust last month, research from Canada showed that higher level of social media use was linked with increased mental depression in adolescents. With this study, the problem is put in a better context. It's not necessarily social media that's causing these issues. It's more likely the contents that young people are exposed to and its hindrance (阻碍) of healthy sleep and exercise. Bob Patton, a professor of the University of Surrey, said this means that remedies focusing only on reducing social media use to improve mental health might not help. “Finding ways to improve the online contents and promote better sleep and exercise is needed to reduce physical and psychological harms," said he. “If healthy lifestyles can be kept, the positive effects of social media use, such as encouraging social interactions, can be more supported," said Ann DeSmet, a professor at Ghent University in Belgium. 8. How does the new research differ from the previous studies? A. By carrying out detailed interviews. B. By focusing on both girls and boys. C. By analyzing the social media contents. D. By studying a larger number of teenagers. 9. What does Russell Viner say about social media? A. It doesn't cause any mental problems in teenagers. B. Its abuse may negatively change the healthy lifestyle. C. Its harmful contents should be reduced immediately. D. It encourages social interactions among adolescents. 10. Which of the following best explains “remedies” underlined in paragraph 6? A. Measures. B. Effects. C. Experiments. D. Differences. 11. What is the author' s purpose in writing the text? A. To prove the harmful effects of social media. B. To show the proper way to use social media. C. To present related studies and discoveries. D. To introduce an important new discovery. 【答案】8. C 9. B 10. A 11. D 【解析】 【分析】本文是一篇说明文。一项来自英格兰的研究表明,给青少年身心健康造成危害的不是社交媒体本身,而是他们所接触到的不良的社交媒体内容及不健康的使用习惯。 【8题详解】 细节理解题。 第二段三四句“But the researchers, for the first time, went a step further to investigate what kind of websites the teenagers frequented. They found that, in both sexes, very frequent visits to social media with negative (负面的) contents was associated with greater mental depression and anxiety.(但研究人员首次进一步调查了青少年经常访问的网站类型。他们发现,无论是男性还是女性,非常频繁地访问带有负面内容的社交媒体都与更严重的精神抑郁和焦虑有关)”可知,这一研究第一次调查了社交媒体及其内容。故选C。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。 第三段第一句“Our results suggest social media itself doesn't cause harm, but that frequent use may disrupt (中断) activities that positively influence mental health such as sleeping and exercising, while increasing exposure of young people to harmful contents(我们的研究结果表明,社交媒体本身不会造成伤害,但频繁使用可能会干扰睡眠和锻炼等对心理健康有积极影响的活动,同时增加年轻人接触有害内容的机会)”可知,过度使用社交媒体会中断积极影响心理健康的活动,比如睡觉和锻炼,即会打乱正常的生活节奏。故选B。 【10题详解】 词句猜测题。第六段第二句“Finding ways to improve the online contents and promote better sleep and exercise is needed to reduce physical and psychological harms(想办法改善网上内容,促进更好的睡眠和锻炼,以减少对身体和心理的伤害是必要的)”可知,教授说,需要找到一些能够提升网络内容和促进良好睡眠和锻炼的方法,以便能减少身体和心理的伤害。而前文说“ remedies focusing only on reducing social media use to improve mental health might not help(只注重减少社交媒体使用以改善心理健康的remedies可能不会有帮助)”可推知,remedies与ways是同义词,意为“方法,措施”。故选A。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。一般情况主旨大意出现在第一段或最后一段,本文第一段“Social media use has been linked to mental health problems in the teenagers. But a new study from England argues that the issue may be more complex than experts think.(社交媒体的使用与青少年的心理健康问题有关。但一项来自英格兰的新研究认为,这个问题可能比专家们想象的要复杂)”及下文介绍可知,本文主要介绍了一项有关社交媒体对青少年身心健康造成危害的最新研究成果。故选D。 D Booking your next vacation to space with out-of-this-world views could soon be a reality. Orbital Assembly Corporation announced two new station concepts designed with space tourism accommodations. One of the stations, called Pioneer, could orbit Earth as early as 2025. The Gateway Foundation circulated ideas for a space hotel in 2019. The goal of the stations is to run a space business park that can serve as a home away from home with room for offices and tourists. Orbital Assembly was founded by the Gateway Foundation team as a way to help make these dreams come true. The proposed Pioneer station can accommodate 28 people. The second station, Voyager, scheduled to open in 2027, can hold up to 400 people. “The goal has always been to make it possible for large numbers of people to live, work and thrive in space,“ says Orbital Assembly’s COO Tim Alatorre. Both stations look like a wheel and will feature artificial gravity that allows guests to move comfortably on each station. Pioneer features five modules built around the rotating “Gravity Ring” architecture design. Tourists may still feel some weightlessness but will also be able to drink out of a cup and won’t have to be tied to a bed to sleep. The gravity works similar to how a spinning bucket pushes the water out to the sides of the bucket and stays in place, Alatorre explains. Near the middle of the station, there will be no artificial gravity, but gravity gradually increases further away from the center. While the Pioneer station will be smaller than Voyager, guests can still shower, eat and drink sitting down in areas with gravity. Each station is furnished like luxury hotels on Earth. Voyager will feature a restaurant and suites with views of Earth. A significant barrier to space travel is the cost. However, Orbital Assembly expects tourists to seek a trek into space as space travel eventually becomes less expensive. “We envision our Pioneer and Voyager space stations as the ultimate ecotourism destinations. Once people get to space, it will change their perspective about Earth,” Alatorre says. “Space travel is still at its early stage, and we’re excited to do our part to push it forward to help improve life on Earth.” 12. What is the goal of the Pioneer and Voyager space stations? A. To revolutionize space travel. B. To serve as luxury hotels in space. C. To offer a unique and immersive experience. D. To enable large scale living and working in space. 13. What do the Pioneer and Voyager stations have in common? A. Open time. B. Artificial gravity. C. Suites with views. D. Passenger capacity. 14. What can we learn from paragraph 4? A. The “Gravity Ring” rotates around the station. B. The gravity is weak in the central point of the station. C. The “Gravity Ring” on Pioneer is identical with that on Voyager. D. The gravity operates like a spinning bucket keeping water inside. 15. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Overcoming the Barrier: Space Tourism Becomes Affordable B. Space Hotels on the Horizon: Pioneer and Voyager Stations C. The Future of Space Travel: Pioneer and Voyager Stations D. Orbital Assembly: Space Tourism Dream Comes True 【答案】12. D 13. B 14. D 15. B As the daughter of immigrants, Vanida Chanthaphone’s primary language at home was Lao. C Social media use has been linked to mental health problems in the teenagers. D Booking your next vacation to space with out-of-this-world views could soon be a reality. C. Overcoming the Barrier: Space Tourism Becomes Affordable B. Space Hotels on the Horizon: Pioneer and Voyager Stations C. The Future of Space Travel: Pioneer and Voyager Stations D.
