B When Mia Woods retired at 61, she knew she needed a plan. “I was worried about losing my identity as a professional. What else can I be?” she thought. The year before, she had been told she had a mild memory problem. “I was trying to show myself that I could still think and be creative,” she says. So she decided to do — rather than be — something new: bake a pie every day for a year and give each pie away. “It made me reach out every day to somebody, so I wouldn’t be alone. And it gave me a routine,” she says. She baked her first pie and gave it to her 88-year-old aunt, Carol. As a teenager, Mia had moved in with her aunt’s family when her mother became ill. “They gave me stability... It was the perfect first pie,” she says. She went on giving pies to former colleagues, grocery clerks, even a homeless man. As word spread, she got known as “the pie lady”. For more than 30 years, Mia had worked as a city planner. “I’m a planner by nature, training and profession. What I really liked about it was that planning takes time, chaos, many different components, puts them all together and makes them into something manageable.” She sees the same in baking pies: “You take a bunch of ingredients and create something out of them.” Twelve years on, Mia has continued to invent new projects, including writing a letter a day, and painting pictures of her local sky. She is writing a book about the pie experience. But she has learned more than baking. “What really came out of it was the understanding that I was someone who could do new things,” she reflects. “And my professional identity wasn’t critical to who I am.” “Even now, after I have an encounter with somebody, I think: ‘There’s a person I wish I could give a pie to.’” says Mia. 24. What was Mia’s worry when she retired? A. Her serious mental problem. B. Her being cut off from others. C. Having no identity beyond career. D. Having to change her daily routine. 25. Why did Mia give her first pie to her aunt? A. She had given Mia a home. B. She had cared for Mia’s mum. C. She was the oldest in the family. D. She had built Mia’s stable character. 26. What do city planning and baking pies have in common according to Mia? A. Both require professional training. B. Both make sense of mixed elements. C. Both create something out of nothing. D. Both connect people with one another. 27. What is Mia’s reflection on her experience? A. Everyone in the world deserves a pie. B. New challenges redefine who we are. C. Opening up to changes takes courage. D. Simple acts can bring people together. C Few things are as undoubtedly good for you as exercise. Besides making you fitter and stronger, it cuts your risk of heart disease, strokes, diabetes, many types of cancer and more. But how much of the cure-all do you really need? The WHO recommends at least 150 minutes a week of moderate activity, such as easy jogging or cycling, and two sessions a week of strength training. Many still fall short. In America, for instance, less than half of adults meet the minimum recommendations for just cardiovascular exercise alone. Those who hate pounding the pavements need not despair, though. Even a little exercise is better than none. And a growing pile of evidence suggests that might be true even with very small amounts of exercise indeed: potentially just a few minutes a day. Recently a group of researchers published a study that analyzed data from 25,000 British people who did no organised exercise. The researchers were interested in “vigorous irregular lifestyle physical activity”, or VILPA — short bursts of relatively intense exercise undertaken in daily life. Few of the participants did much VILPA — the median was just 4.4 minutes per day. But even that was associated with a reduction in the chance of dying, from any cause, of up to 30% in the following seven years for which the average participant was monitored. The association persisted even after the researchers tried to account for the idea that causality (因果关系) might run the other way, with only the already healthy capable of performing VILPA. Exactly why VILPAs seem to be so good for you is not yet clear. But inspired by the results, some academics have started advocating “exercise snacks”: short bursts of activity that even the most gym-shy or time-pressed should be able to manage. As the old saying goes, every little helps. In fact, it may help much more than you think. 28. What do the WHO’s exercise guidelines advocate? A. A mix of intensities. B. Moderate activity. C. Intense workouts. D. Duration over frequency. 29. Which of the following is an example of VILPA? A. Jogging for 20 minutes at a steady speed. B. Doing push-ups during each work break. C. Climbing stairs quickly to a meeting. D. Walking the dog after supper. 30. What factor did the researchers take into account? A. Participants’ original health state. B. Methods for lowering the death rate. C. Participants’ daily exercise preferences. D. The length of people’s monitoring period. 31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the passage? A. How Little Exercise Can You Get Away With? B. VILPA: A New-style Strength-building Workout C. Should You Follow the WHO Exercise Guidelines? D. Exercise Snacks: Turn Daily Chores into Workouts D Some of the biggest challenges in artificial intelligence are being worked on not by computer scientists but by philosophers. The philosophers are tasked with making the next generation of models more capable and reliable, but they also shed light on the mystery of consciousness. Jonathan Birch at the London School of Economics and Political Science says AI companies are the big employers of philosophy PhDs right now. “Topics that have been researched in philosophy departments for decades — how to make rational decisions, what counts as reasoning, what counts as evidence of consciousness — are suddenly of massive value to AI companies,” says Birch. One of the key tasks for this crop of philosophers is alignment, the AI industry term for efforts to stop harmful content — such as revealing instructions on how to make bombs. Efforts to stop AI models giving dangerous outputs were initially focused around putting in simple black-and-white guardrails (护栏), such as forbidding a model from talking about bombs entirely. But these proved clumsy and easy to circumvent. Now, companies are pursuing more advanced methods which lean heavily on philosophical understanding of right and wrong. However, it’s rarely straightforward. Researchers have found that if you tell a model to break a rule in one specific situation, it will start breaking lots of other rules, says Shane Glackin at the University of Exeter in the UK. And understanding why is exactly the sort of problem that philosophy’s logical analysis can crack. Mahrad Almotahari at the University of Edinburgh sees value in philosophy expertise for technology firms, but is sceptical that the toughest questions of machine consciousness will be answered by them. Others see a potential problem on the horizon, with industry hiring philosophers eventually leading to biased research that serves the interests of technology companies. “I wish we had made more progress on the big questions of philosophy before the arrival of AI. If we had, we would have been better prepared. AI has now given these questions massive urgency, and yet, the answers still seem far away,” says Birch. 32. What phenomenon is presented in the first two paragraphs? A. Computer scientists are losing their jobs. B. Philosophers outperform computer scientists. C. Philosophy PhDs are favored in the job market. D. AI companies are turning to philosophy for help. 33. What does the underlined word “circumvent” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Take over. B. Get around. C. Pick up. D. Push forward. 34. How do the training methods of large language models shift? A. From theory analysis to practical use. B. From technical fixes to logical analysis. C. From rigid rules to moral reasoning. D. From simple tasks to complex situations. 35. What question does the text center on? A. Will philosophers win in the battle for better AI? B. Can the problems in AI be solved by philosophy? C. How can philosophers transform the AI industry? D. Why do AI companies prefer philosophers to coders? Staying physically active in hot weather can be challenging. With this summer’s heat intensified by a powerful El Niño, outdoor workouts and even daily routines like commuting on foot become more physically demanding and less comfortable. ____36____ Yet this seemingly practical response may trigger hidden long-term health risks. Then how to stay active safely amid heatwaves? Here are evidence-based strategies from researchers. ____37____ The most practical method is to arrange exercise during cooler periods, such as early mornings or evenings. Avoid mid-day hours when sunlight is the sharpest and heat stress reaches its peak. Besides, choosing shaded areas instead of open sunlit spaces can lower the surrounding temperature significantly. Parks with thick tree cover are much more desirable than bare open grounds for outdoor physical activity. Equally important is adjusting exercise duration and intensity on hot days. Sticking to your usual exercise routine in high heat will bring extra physical burden and thermal strain. ____38____ Or you can do light indoor exercise, or add more frequent breaks in cool, shaded spots with cold water available. Moreover, let your body adapt. Gradually increasing your exercise volume in hot conditions enables your body to get adjusted to high temperatures, a process known as heat adaptation. Typically, 7 to 14 days of regular hot-weather exercise will produce a series of positive physiological changes. However, this adaptation is short-lived. ____39____ ____40____ As heatwaves grow more frequent, people need to adjust not only whether they exercise but also when, where and how they work out. A. It is wiser to take shorter exercise sessions. B. Many people turn to indoor sports on hot summer days. C. Extra training can speed up the formation of heat adaptation. D. Timing and environment choices matter greatly for hot-weather exercise. E. Faced with extreme heat, many people choose to reduce physical activity. F. Without regular heat exposure, those hard-won benefits will fade away gradually. G. Experts stress climate change should be considered when planning physical activity. A Growing up, I thought my life was unremarkable. As the running team captain, I took double responsibility. I needed to compete for a top position and help my best friend Ben qualify for the school team. Ben was a fast runner but lacked steady endurance, which caused him to collapse from tiredness and fail to finish last year’s race. To help him achieve his goal, I followed a private arrangement from my coach. I would act as his pacer in the tryout, setting a steady early speed to help him build a comfortable running rhythm and preserve energy for the final stage. The plan was practical, yet it brought me inner unease. Ben always saw me as a fair competitor and trusted me to race side by side with him. The tryout took place on a misty morning. When the starting gun fired, all runners rushed forward at full speed. I kept a proper lead over Ben to control the pace, constantly aware of his heavy breathing behind me. After running two kilometers, I looked back and found Ben struggling with exhaustion but still closely following my footsteps with full trust. An unexpected accident occurred during the race. My left shoelace came loose, making me trip and fall on the grass. Ben slowed down immediately, caught in a dilemma between pursuing his dream and caring for me. I struggled to my feet and signaled for him to keep running. We continued the race soon, but my ankle began to ache badly. I could no longer maintain the steady pace, and we gradually fell behind the leading group. Surprisingly, Ben gave up his competitive speed and adjusted his stride to match my awkward movement. Watching his considerate choice, I felt complicated inside, knowing my well-intentioned plan had put us both in an awkward situation. Paragraph 1: Hardly holding back the pain, I whispered to Ben, “Go ahead. Win this for us.” __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: When the results were announced later, Ben sought me out, holding the team list. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 英语学科体验活动(四) 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 Where does the conversation most probably take place? It costs only half as much, and we have plenty of time before the play starts. M: Well, look! Why has the bus come to a complete stop? W: The driver said a strong wind brought down a huge tree, and it’s lying across the avenue. No vehicles can get through. M: Oh no! We only have twenty minutes left. Can we run to the nearest subway station? W: That won’t save us much time — it’s over two kilometers from here. How about renting shared bikes? M: I’ve already checked. The ones nearby are either in use or out of order. W: Then we may have to stay on the bus and wait. M: Wait — the map says the theater is just around the corner, only about 500 meters away. W: In that case, let’s get off. If we hurry, we’ll arrive before the curtain goes up. 14. What will Jason’s team present at the science fair? A. M: No, five classmates have signed up, and Mr. Green has already given our plan the green light. W: So what’s holding you back? M: The design calls for 200 clean plastic bottles, but there are only 50 in our collection box. W: That’s a lot of bottles. Have you asked other students for help? M: Not yet. We don’t know how to get the word out quickly. W: Why not make some eye-catching posters and put them up on the notice boards near the school cafeteria? You can ask everyone to drop their empty bottles in your box after lunch. M: Good thinking. Should I check with Mr. Green before putting them up? W: Your project has already been approved, so I wouldn’t waste time waiting. M: You’re right. I’ll make the posters now and set out a collection box before lunchtime. 17. Where was the speaker when he noticed the old guitar? A. In his uncle’s old house. B. As an amateur music lover from London, I enjoy looking at old musical instruments. Suddenly, an old wooden guitar resting in a dark corner caught my attention. I picked it up and dusted off the surface. To my great surprise, carved into the back of the neck was a small five-pointed star with the letters P. S. next to it. My heart started racing because P. S. stands for Peter Smith — my uncle! I immediately called my mother to check the story. It turned out that when Uncle Peter was studying in Oxford forty years ago, he owned this very guitar. Before graduation, he lent it to a college friend. However, they both moved away in a hurry after final exams, and the guitar was completely forgotten. Over the past decades, it was passed from one person to another until it ended up in that market. I bought the guitar back without hesitation. Uncle Peter is turning sixty next weekend. Returning this long-lost treasure at his party will be the most unforgettable birthday surprise ever. A The Smartest Tech Devices Released This Month The Nothing Phone with E-Ink Display Concept An exciting concept has been presented this year that suggests making the back of the phone functional by designing the Glyph Matrix as an active E-Ink display. C 25. A 26. B 27. 根据第一段““I was worried about losing my identity as a professional. What else can I be?” she thought. 根据第三段“She baked her first pie and gave it to her 88-year-old aunt, Carol. As a teenager, Mia had moved in with her aunt’s family when her mother became ill. “They gave me stability... It was the perfect first pie,” she says. She went on giving pies to former colleagues, grocery clerks, even a homeless man. As word spread, she got known as “the pie lady”. A“She had given Mia a home (她曾给米娅一个家)”的表述。 根据第四段““I’m a planner by nature, training and profession. What I really liked about it was that planning takes time, chaos, many different components, puts them all together and makes them into something manageable.” She sees the same in baking pies: “You take a bunch of ingredients and create something out of them.”( “我天生就是个规划师,这是我的训练和职业。我真正喜欢的是规划工作,规划需要时间,它要把混乱和众多不同的要素整合起来,使之变得井然有序。”她在烘焙馅饼时也发现了同样的道理:“你将各种食材混合在一起,就能创造出新的成果。”)”可知,通过米娅的类比,两者的共同之处在于都是将纷繁杂乱的不同元素组合成有序、有意义的整体,即选项B“Both make sense of mixed elements (两者都让混合的元素变得有条理) ”。 根据倒数第二段““What really came out of it was the understanding that I was someone who could do new things,” she reflects. “And my professional identity wasn’t critical to who I am.”(最重要的是,这件事让我明白自己能够尝试新事物,”她回忆道,“而且我的职业身份并不决定我的本质。”)” B“New challenges redefine who we are (新挑战重新定义了我们是谁)”的内涵。 C Few things are as undoubtedly good for you as exercise. D. Exercise Snacks: Turn Daily Chores into Workouts 【答案】28. A 29. C 30. A 31. 根据第二段中“The WHO recommends at least 150 minutes a week of moderate activity, such as easy jogging or cycling, and two sessions a week of strength training. 根据第四段中“The researchers were interested in “vigorous irregular lifestyle physical activity”, or VILPA — short bursts of relatively intense exercise undertaken in daily life. 根据第五段中“The association persisted even after the researchers tried to account for the idea that causality (因果关系) might run the other way, with only the already healthy capable of performing VILPA. D Some of the biggest challenges in artificial intelligence are being worked on not by computer scientists but by philosophers. D 33. B 34. C 35. 根据第一段“Some of the biggest challenges in artificial intelligence are being worked on not by computer scientists but by philosophers.(人工智能领域一些最大的挑战不是由计算机科学家解决,而是由哲学家来攻克)”以及第二段“Jonathan Birch at the London School of Economics and Political Science says AI companies are the big employers of philosophy PhDs right now.(伦敦政治经济学院的乔纳森·伯奇表示,人工智能公司现在是哲学博士的主要雇主)”可知,文章前两段呈现的现象是人工智能公司正寻求哲学领域的帮助。 根据第三段“Efforts to stop AI models giving dangerous outputs were initially focused around putting in simple black-and-white guardrails (护栏), such as forbidding a model from talking about bombs entirely. But these proved clumsy and easy to circumvent.(阻止AI模型输出危险内容的做法最初侧重于设置简单非黑即白的护栏,例如完全禁止模型谈论炸弹。 根据第一段“Some of the biggest challenges in artificial intelligence are being worked on not by computer scientists but by philosophers.(人工智能领域一些最大的挑战不是由计算机科学家解决,而是由哲学家来攻克)”、第五段“Mahrad Almotahari at the University of Edinburgh sees value in philosophy expertise for technology firms, but is sceptical that the toughest questions of machine consciousness will be answered by them.(爱丁堡大学的马赫拉德·阿尔莫塔哈里认为,哲学专长对科技公司有着重要的价值,但他也怀疑这部分专家能否解答关于机器意识的最棘手的难题)”以及最后一段““I wish we had made more progress on the big questions of philosophy before the arrival of AI. If we had, we would have been better prepared. AI has now given these questions massive urgency, and yet, the answers still seem far away,” says Birch.(伯奇说:“我真希望在人工智能问世之前,我们在哲学重大问题上就已经取得更多进展。 Staying physically active in hot weather can be challenging. E 37. D 38. A 39. F 40. 【36题详解】 根据上文“With this summer’s heat intensified by a powerful El Niño, outdoor workouts and even daily routines like commuting on foot become more physically demanding and less comfortable.(受强厄尔尼诺现象影响,今年夏天的高温进一步加剧,户外锻炼乃至步行通勤这类日常活动都变得更耗体力、体验感也更差。) 【37题详解】 根据下文“The most practical method is to arrange exercise during cooler periods, such as early mornings or evenings. Avoid mid-day hours when sunlight is the sharpest and heat stress reaches its peak. Besides, choosing shaded areas instead of open sunlit spaces can lower the surrounding temperature significantly. Parks with thick tree cover are much more desirable than bare open grounds for outdoor physical activity.(最实用的方法是把锻炼安排在气温更低的时段,比如清晨或傍晚,避开日照最强烈、热压力达到峰值的正午时段。 【38题详解】 根据上文“Sticking to your usual exercise routine in high heat will bring extra physical burden and thermal strain.(在高温环境下坚持原有的锻炼习惯,会给身体带来额外负担和热应激。‌)”和下文“Or you can do light indoor exercise, or add more frequent breaks in cool, shaded spots with cold water available.(你也可以进行轻度的室内运动,或是在有冷水补给的阴凉凉爽区域增加更频繁的休息次数。)” 【39题详解】 根据上文“Typically, 7 to 14 days of regular hot-weather exercise will produce a series of positive physiological changes. However, this adaptation is short-lived.(通常,坚持7到14天规律的高温环境锻炼,身体就会产生一系列积极的生理变化。 【40题详解】 根据下文“As heatwaves grow more frequent, people need to adjust not only whether they exercise but also when, where and how they work out.(随着热浪愈发频繁,人们不仅要调整是否锻炼的选择,还要调整锻炼的时间、地点和方式。)” A Growing up, I thought my life was unremarkable. Win this for us.” Ben hesitated only a moment, his eyes moving quickly between my badly-twisted ankle and the runners moving ahead. Then, with a deep breath, he rushed forward. Watching him disappear into the mist, I clenched my jaw and pulled myself to my feet. Each step brought sharp pain to my ankle, yet I refused to give up. Step by painful step, I dragged myself on until the finish line came into sight. Crossing it, I fell onto the grass, chest rising and falling fast and my leg aching badly, yet quiet pride rose inside me: I had finished what I had started. When the results were announced later, Ben sought me out, holding the team list. His name stood fourth on the list, yet his face showed no joy, only guilt. “I got in,” he muttered, eyes looking down. “But I left you behind.” Seeing how upset he was, I forced a smile and held his shoulder. “You ran your race; I ran mine. We tried our best separately and celebrated together.” His nervous body slowly relaxed. Thinking back on everything, I realized that while the team list gave Ben a place, our friendship gained something more valuable: true friendship is built by respecting each other’s efforts even when we go different ways. In that sense, we had both won. 词汇激活 行为类 ①猛冲;飞奔:rush/dash ②消失:disappear/vanish/fade 情绪类 ① 痛苦的:painful/bitter ② 难过的;心烦的:upset/gloomy/depressed 【点睛】【高分句型1】Watching him disappear into the mist, I clenched my jaw and pulled myself to my feet.(运用了现在分词作状语) 【高分句型2】Crossing it, I fell onto the grass, chest rising and falling fast and my leg aching badly, yet quiet pride rose inside me: I had finished what I had started.(运用了现在分词作状语、独立主格结构以及what引导的宾语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $听力考试正式开始,第一节听下面五段录音,每段录音后有一个小题,从题中所给的ABC3个选项中选出最佳选项。 As an amateur music lover from london, I enjoy looking at old musical instruments. Suddenly, an old wooden guitar resting in a dark corner caught my attention. I picked IT up and dusted off the surface to my great surprise, carved into the back of the neck with a small five pointed star with the letters P. S. Next to IT. My heart started racing because P. S. Stands for Peter smith, my uncle. I immediately called my mother to check the story. IT turned out that when uncle Peter was studying in oxford forty years ago, he owned this very guitar. Before graduation, he lent IT to a college friend. However, they both moved away in a hurry after final exams, and the guitar was completely forgotten. Over the past decades, IT was past from one person to another until IT ended up in that market. I bought the guitar bag without hesitation. Uncle Peter is turning sixty next weekend. Returning this long lost treasure at his party will be the most unforgettable birthday surprise ever.
