Besides, we have many clubs, including art and sports, all ready to welcome new members. I hope you’ll live a happy and colorful life during your study here.

How to make a good first impression at high school?
High school’s starting soon, and I want to make a good first impression. I’m a little afraid because I’m short and weigh a bit too much and sometimes people make fun of me for that. Can anyone give me any advice on how to act during my first weeks, or what kind of clothes to wear, etc.?

I really suggest being kind and outgoing (外向的). It is better to be really social and introduce yourself. You won’t get anywhere being shy.
Your weight really doesn’t matter. If you’re really that uncomfortable with it, try working out.

Don’t worry about your weight, and don’t let it get you down. “Those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”
Remember that. Concentrate ( 集中注意力) on schoolwork. Be nice, polite, and stay strong. Don’t wear the ‘in’ clothes just because everybody else does. Wear clothes for YOU. Try babydoll tops and flats; they’re very nice and work for almost all body types (类型).

Freshman (九年级学生) year, just ended for me a few months ago!
Take it from me, the best thing for you to do is be nice to everyone. If someone isn’t nice to you, don’t take it personally. Try out for sports and clubs, and you’ll soon make new friends.

Today was my first day at senior high and it was hard. In high school, you have 4 minutes to get to your next class. My high school is very big and those 4 minutes to go from one class to another really isn’t a lot of time. Today I had to go from one end of the building to the other to get from science class to math class. I wanted to go to my locker first and leave my science book there, but that took time. I was worried about being late, and I was. The math teacher said, “Just be on time tomorrow, or you’ll have detention (放学后留校).”
After math, I went to art class. I like my art class a lot because I get to create things. The teacher there showed us how to make portraits ( 肖像). He explained, “A portrait is a way of communicating with a person. It does not just show how the person looks but what is important to understand the person.” We just did drawings today, but I know it’s going to be great. I like drawing.
I like my English class, too. I think the teacher is really supportive. Today we wrote about ourselves. The teacher said to just write what you think, and we’ll pay attention to punctuation (标点) later. We could write a paragraph or a poem, and I wrote a poem about myself. I thought it was a good poem, and the teacher said I had used good images (意象) to communicate my feelings.
Lunch was very hurried. I arrived at the dining room with 12 minutes to eat. I sat with people I didn’t know, and everyone was eating quickly. After lunch I signed up for a computer club. I need to learn how to use a computer well because my social studies teacher says it is the one skill you need in every class.

B. He pointed out the author’s mistake.
C. He asked the author to check punctuation.
D. He encouraged the author to introduce himself.

A. Learn useful skills in high school

I like to sit quietly near the hummingbird (蜂鸟) feeder and take pictures of the birds. One day, I watched them as they left the feeder to see where they would go.
Following the birds wasn’t easy since hummingbirds move so quickly, but I saw that each one usually headed in the same direction. I headed after them and discovered that they were going to perch (栖息) on small branches (树枝). One male hummingbird (which I’d like to call Buzz) would sit on the same perch almost every time he left the feeder. Wanting to understand what Buzz was doing, I slowly walked closer to his perch.
I moved just a few feet at a time and waited several minutes before stepping closer. Soon I was close enough to take good pictures, and I began to watch what he did.
Buzz usually sat where he could see the feeder. Anytime he saw another hummingbird coming to feed, he left the perch and chased (赶) the other bird away. Buzz didn’t want to share with anybody!
The bird seemed to prefer different perches for different times of the day. In the mornings and evenings, he sat close to the feeder. In the middle of the day, he sat farther away and even disappeared (消失) for short periods at noon. During these times, other hummingbirds flew in to feed without being chased away.
When Buzz was near the feeder, he always perched at exactly the same place. I set up more branches so he could sit even closer to the feeder. He had always chosen dead branches with no leaves on them, so that’s what I used to get him closer. It worked!
Now every morning and every evening Buzz sits within two or three feet of his feeder and guards his food. I fill the feeder, and he almost seems to pose for the camera!
28. What did the author find when he watched hummingbirds one day?
A. Hummingbirds liked to perch close together.
B. Hummingbirds often perched on lower branches.
C. Hummingbirds chose small branches as their perches.
D. Hummingbirds usually perched on the same branches.
29. What can we learn about Buzz?
A. He likes to play with the author.
B. He is easy to recognize by his color.
C. He is happy to pose for photographs.
D. He is always ready to guard his food.
30. What does the underlined part “these times” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A. Short periods at noon. B. Short periods at night.
C. The early mornings. D. The late evenings.
31. How did the author make Buzz sit closer to the feeder?
A. By filling the feeder every day.
B. By placing a camera near the feeder.
C. By setting up leaves around the feeder.
D. By putting dead branches near the feeder.
D
What is standard English? Does it really matter? With the rise of Internet technologies, does anyone actually speak a pure ( 纯粹的) form of their own English anymore? Many English speakers have found Americanisms slowly influencing their language. English may be the international language of communication — but which kind?
As a teacher, a favourite question continually asked by my students is “Which is better, American or British English?” My answer is always the same, “It depends!” These days, we can also add the Australian variety ( 种类), as learners in Asia where I live are more exposed (暴露) to Australian English and are more likely to study in Australia than in the United States or the UK, although the difference between Australian and British English is very small and mainly vocabulary-based.
So what can influence whether foreign learners are better off learning a particular standard of English? Put simply, it depends on what is more suitable. Learners need to think over their academic (学业的), work or social needs. If someone is working for a US-owned company then the company will probably require American English in its written communication. Similarly if you are studying to be a tour guide in an area that has many British tourists, it makes sense to pay more attention to that standard. If a learner is going to study in Australia then studying Australian English will help him in the long run.
When I have managed language schools, there was often healthy competition between teachers of different nationalities ( 国籍) for the importance of their particular standard of English. Language schools abroad may prefer one particular standard of English, and therefore sometimes, understandably, give preference to that particular nationality of teacher.
Personally though, I like to keep an open mind, as there can also be advantages for both students and teachers. Students get to be exposed to more varieties of English, providing them with a more well-rounded education. So teachers should pay attention to the differences in varieties, increasing their own knowledge base.
32. What is the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 1?
A. To introduce some general information on English.
B. To bring up the topic of standard English.
C. To discuss the importance of English.
D. To explain what standard English is.
33. What can we learn about Australian English from paragraph 2?
A. It has been influenced by Asian languages.
B. It is most popular with international students.
C. It is the author’s preferred variety of English.
D. It differs from British English mostly in vocabulary.
34. What should a learner consider when choosing a variety of English according to the author?
A. His educational level. B. His personal needs.
C. His own interest. D. His nationality.
35. What is the author’s attitude to learning different varieties of English?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful.
C. Surprised. D. Uncaring.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Learning English can be fun and important. 36 But don’t worry! We’ve got some general methods of learning English effectively (高效地).
Set a goal (目标).
Having an aim or goal is important when you are learning a language. You should think about why you want to study English and what you want to achieve. When you have decided on your main goal, you can then make smaller steps to reach it. 37 This method helps you to stay motivated (积极).
Find a routine (惯例).
Learning a language takes a lot of time and practice. So it helps if you have a routine when you are studying. 38 Whether you study for 30 minutes each day or 1-2 hours throughout the week, you will gradually improve your English.
Make mistakes.
You won’t be perfect at English straightaway. 39 These errors can help you learn and improve your English skills. It’s better to be fluent (流利的) and make errors than be correct in every way without fluency.
40
Understanding English is easier if you can understand the culture of its native speakers. If you’re particularly interested in British English, for example, you could learn about the culture and history of the UK.
A. Connect with the culture.
B. Listen to native speakers.
C. All learners make mistakes in English.
D. However, it can also seem difficult sometimes.
E. You should think about how long you can study for each day or week.
F. By having lots of small goals, you can soon build up to your main goal.
G. For many people, being able to speak English fluently is their final goal.
