He has lived in a village in Yunnan Province for nearly 20 years. He now considers that he is one of the “cool new Dali people”. Mr Linden was born and raised in Chicago. He first visited China in 1984. He received a scholarship (奖学金) from the Chinese Government and came to study in Beijing. During his stay, he was deeply attracted to Chinese culture and would love to be its communicator. After working and travelling in more than 100 countries, Mr Linden gave up his job in the US, sold his house, and moved to China with his family in 2004. After a tour around China, Mr Linden and his wife finally decided to live in Xizhou, a small town not far from Dali. “I’m a fan of China’s traditional buildings. Xizhou is a beautiful town with hundreds of old buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Traditions here keep me as alive as ever, and the local people treat me like family,” said Mr Linden. With the help of the Dali government, Mr Linden repaired a traditional Bai-style (白族风格) house into a hotel for foreign tourists. The hotel provides international education projects for European and American schools. It also opens 50% of its rooms to the public, creating a place for more people to communicate with the villagers. It offers free English classes to villagers once a week. When talking about his future plans, Mr Linden said he wanted to do more to share the beauty of China with the world. “Our goal is to turn Xizhou into a window for foreigners to learn about China,” said Mr Linden. “I hope that through my efforts, more people will love China.” 5. What can we learn about Mr Linden’s first visit to China? A. He studied in Yunnan. B. He moved to Xizhou, Dali. C. He studied for a scholarship. D. He was attracted to Chinese culture. 7. According to the text, what is Mr Linden’s goal in the future? A. To repair more ancient buildings. B. To build more hotels. C. To teach more people English for free. D. To let more people know about China. 8. Which of the following can best describe Mr Linden? A. Careful and strict. B. Helpful and patient. C. Creative and caring. D. Calm and business-minded. 【答案】5. They take in and store CO2, support animals, hold soil in place, manage water cycles (循环), and provide people with resources such as wood, food, and cooling shade during hot weather. However, forests around the world are facing a great change. New research shows that many forest ecosystems are becoming more similar, losing biodiversity (生物多样性), and growing weaker. By examining more than 31,000 tree species across the world, scientists were able to map how forests are likely to change in the coming decades (几十年). Their job focused on changes in species makeup, long-term stability (稳定性), and how forests play a role as ecosystems. The study found the number of fast-growing tree species is becoming increasingly large. At the same time, slower-growing trees face a growing risk of disappearance. Jens-Christian Svenning, a senior author of the study, points especially to the danger faced by trees that live only in certain small areas of the world. According to Svenning, these trees often have thick leaves, heavy wood, and long lives, and they are especially common in rainforests. If climate change continues at present levels, forests are likely to prefer fast-growing trees. “Although they can grow well in a short time, they are more easily hurt by drought (干旱), storms, and other unusual weather events. This makes forests less effective at storing CO2 over the long term,” says Svenning. According to the researchers, human actions are the main force behind these changes in forests. Human-driven climate change, deforestation (毁林), and the world’s trade in tree species all play a role. Fast-growing trees are often actively promoted (推广) because they produce wood quickly. But they are often weaker and easier to get sick. So the management of forests needs to change. 9. What’s the main idea of the first paragraph? A. There are fewer forests around the world. B. Forests are changing much faster than before. C. Forests are important but they are facing problems. D. Trees provide a lot of useful things for people. 10. What did scientists study in their research? A. Where to find the oldest forests. B. How to protect endangered trees. C. How forests may develop in the future. D. Why some tree species grow more slowly. 11. What did Svenning express about forests? A. Worry. B. Hope. C. Doubt. D. Interest. 12. What will probably be discussed next? A. The advantages of fast-growing trees. B. The importance of trees to human life. C. The danger faced by fast-growing trees. D. The ways to improve forest management. 【答案】9. C 10. C 11. A 12. On December 26, 2025, the Xi’an-Yan’an high-speed railway started services. The opening of this line has brought China’s high-speed railway mileage (里程) to over 50,000 kilometers. This means China’s operating high-speed railway mileage is more than twice the total length of all other countries in the world. Today, the high-speed railway network covers 97% of Chinese cities with a population of over 500,000, completely changing people’s travel experience. Traveling between cities within 500 kilometers takes only one to two hours, and a 1,000-kilometer journey takes about four hours. An average of 16 million passengers take high-speed trains every day. This is a far cry from the past, when buying train tickets during busy seasons was a headache and the average train speed was only 60 kilometers per hour. High-speed railways now connect big cities with medium-sized and small towns, driving tourism and local industries. For example, since the Hangzhou-Changsha high-speed railway opened in 2014, the number of tourists to Jiangxi has increased greatly. China has shared its technology and experience with over 40 countries, cooperating on projects. From importing (引进) technology to becoming a global leader, China’s high-speed railway is a proud symbol of the country’s progress. 13. Which is true about the Xi’an-Yan’an high-speed railway? A. It carries 50,000 visitors a day. B. It places China as a railway leader. C. Its opening is of great importance. D. Its speed is the fastest in the world. 14. Why does the writer mention numbers in Paragraph 2? A. To describe how vast China is. B. To introduce the best way to travel in China. C. To explain why China needs high-speed trains. D. To show the rapid development of China’s high-speed railway. 15. What do the underlined words in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Is familiar with. B. Is different from. C. Is separated from. D. Is connected with. 16. What is the main idea of the passage? A. The history of China’s high-speed railway. B. The economic benefits of China’s high-speed railway. C. How to improve China’s high-speed railway services in the future. D. China’s high-speed railway: achievements and influences. 【答案】13. C 14. D 15. B 16. 根据文章第1段“The opening of this line has brought China’s high-speed railway mileage... to over 50,000 kilometers.”可知,这条线路的开通使中国高铁总里程突破5万公里,达到了一个重要的里程碑,说明其开通具有重大意义。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第2段“Today, the high-speed railway network covers 97% of Chinese cities... An average of 16 million passengers take high-speed trains every day.”以及后文与过去时速60公里的对比可知,作者列举这些数字是为了展示中国高铁网络的覆盖广、客流量大及速度快,从而体现中国高铁的快速发展。 【15题详解】 词句猜测题。根据文章第2段画线短语前后内容对比:现在是日均1600万人次且速度快,过去是“buying train tickets during busy seasons was a headache and the average train speed was only 60 kilometers per hour”。 The Journey of Self-Discovery People make long journeys to different countries. ____17____ However, the biggest journey is the self-discovery journey. Some people say the air conditioning is too cold. Others mention noisy children in the reading room. Some talk about the water quality or lack of toilet paper. What’s special is that every message gets a reply from the library staff (职工). A blogger shared this online, and the video quickly got thousands of likes and comments. People love it because the library listens. It shows that good public service isn’t just about money or big plans—it’s about caring about people. The library moved the guestbook from the front desk to a quiet corner. In this way, readers can write freely without feeling watched. The staff check the book regularly. When someone writes a message, they send it to the right department and write back. Some ideas are used right away. For example, a reader suggested adding chairs in the eating area, and the library did it. When they can’t do something, they explain why. For example, they won’t add a microwave because it’s not safe. This simple guestbook shows the warmth of the city. It proves that what really matters is whether people feel seen and heard. 41. How does the writer start the text? A. By introducing Brian Linden. B. By describing a Yunnan village. C. By talking about the Dali people. D. By explaining Brian Linden’s hobbies. 6. C Trees are important to life on Earth. D Over the past ten years, China has achieved excellent development, and its high-speed railway system stands out as a clear example. 第二节: 阅读下面短文,从短文后的五个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余项。 The Journey of Self-Discovery People make long journeys to different countries. 41.
