Dear Peter,
I’m Li Hua, one of your students. Knowing that you will launch a reading-month activity requiring us to finish five assigned English classics, I’m writing to share my concern on it.
One primary issue when teachers assign fixed reading tasks to us students is that they fail to take into account the varying levels of proficiency among students, which will lead to less effective reading. Higher-level students tend to make rapid progress in reading, while weaker peers encounter obstacles in appreciating the books. To tackle this problem, I propose an alternative: we should select reading materials based on our proficiency levels and interests. Only in this way can students immerse themselves in reading, thus helping to create a more engaging reading environment and to allow students to achieve a more comprehensive reading experience.
I earnestly hope you will take my suggestions into consideration. I’m convinced that with the reasonable adjustments, the reading-month activity can become an invaluable part of our campus life.
Yours,
Li Hua

She asked Mr. Carter for permission and began by taking on small tasks. Organizing scripts, preparing playlists and setting the facilities, Mary threw herself into these tasks, treating each one as an opportunity to learn. During breaks, she observed Olivia’s hosting techniques — how she handled technical issues and managed to make the audience feel excited and engaged. When no one was around, she would practice repeatedly, pretending to host her own show. Discouraged and upset when she made mistakes, she once had an urge to give up. However, she observed Olivia closely, noted her skills and kept reminding herself, “Keep trying, and you’ll make it.” As days turned into weeks, her notebook was filled with her thoughts and reflections. Mary felt more confident, and she hoped she could finally share her voice with the school.
Then one day, Mr. Carter rushed in with unexpected news: Olivia had suddenly fallen ill. Taking a deep breath, Mary stood up, “I’ve learned a lot these days. May I try?” Mr. Carter studied her determined face and nodded. Mary stepped forward and held the cold microphone. So nervous was she that her hands trembled, but as the broadcast progressed, the mounting anxiety in her mind gave way to a sense of confidence. She poured all her emotions into the live show. As her final words lingered in the air, the studio burst into thunderous applause and cheers. Seeing Mr. Carter give her a thumbs-up, Mary knew that she had made it. Overwhelmed with a sense of accomplishment, she realized that it was her determination and perseverance that made her an excellent host.

Most people celebrate their 80th birthday with cake and candles. Betty Kellenberger celebrated hers by making history.
The Michigan native recently became the oldest woman ever to hike the entire Appalachian Trail — a surprising 2,200-mile difficult walk that stretches across 14 states, with climbs and descents equal to climbing Mount Everest 16 times. “You see incredible parts of our country, things that you wouldn’t see otherwise,” said Kellenberger. “So much wildlife. It’s just beautiful.”
Kellenberger grew up on a farm in Howell, where her fascination with the famous footpath began. For years, she dreamed about hiking the trail from Georgia to Maine, but life never allowed for the six-month commitment it required. Eventually, she realized that nothing was holding her back — so in 2024, she took her first steps on what would become the adventure of a lifetime.
The journey wasn’t easy. Along the way, Kellenberger faced dehydration, falls, and even disease. It was also interrupted by Hurricane Helene, which tore through the eastern United States and forced her to pause at the southern Virginia border. Determined to finish, she rerouted north and continued in the spring of 2025, braving New England’s rocky terrain until the very end.
When she finally reached the end of the trail, the emotions hit hard. “So you’re a basket case,” she laughed. “You have so many emotions because you’re excited about finishing. I was really looking forward to saying, ‘I am done.’ But you also know you’re going to miss this big time. You’re not going to have what you have out on that trail. That peace, the tranquility.”
She described Maine and New Hampshire as the toughest stretches — but also the most rewarding. Now, after months of hiking through rain, heat, and hardship, Kellenberger says she’s in the best shape of her life.
4. What history did 80-year-old Kellenberger make?
A. She lived as long a life as 80 years.
B. She spent a lifetime exploring.

D. She made a long tough journey.
5. What does the third paragraph indicate?
A. The hiking was her long-held dream.
B. She was a natural sports enthusiast.
C. Her celebration was one like no other.
D. Her difficult life killed her pursuit.
6. What can we infer from paragraph 5?
A. Her success was incomparable.
B. It was a once-in-a-lifetime chance.
C. The experience stirred feelings.
D. She hadn’t expected the outcome.
7. Which word best describes Kellenberger from her episode?
A. Self-centered. B. Emotional C. Long-lived. D. Adventurous.

A group of Maldivian fishermen lines up at the back of a boat. As they cast their fishing rods (钓竿) and barbless hooks (无倒钩的鱼钩) into the water, they attract fish by throwing small fish as a lure on the surface. This method is called pole and line fishing. It is believed by some to have originated in the Maldives and has been passed down through generations for centuries.
Once they feel a bite, the fishermen swing the pole overhead and the fish crash on the boat. They repeat this technique for hours, catching one fish at a time. “Pole and line fishing is very different from catching fish by nets,” says Hamid Abdallah, a Maldivian fisherman. “We catch fish by pole and line because we want to be able to keep doing it for as long as we can. This is what my family have been doing for generations,” he adds. “This has been our livelihood.”
Maldivians catch nearly 100,000 tons of tuna per year and the fish is the country’s biggest export. To protect this food source, the Maldives is encouraging people to practice all kinds of eco-friendly fishing. Pole and line fishing helps reduce bycatch — where unwanted species of fish are caught accidentally — which can be a huge problem with other fishing methods. “When you cast a net, it catches everything — regardless of the species or size,” says Abdallah. “Pole and line fishing catches fish one by one.”
The global fishing industry is vital for food security but overfishing and bycatch disturb ecosystems. Across the world, more than 7 million metric tons of tuna and tuna-like species are caught annually. According to the WWF, most tuna are in danger of dropping greatly in numbers.
Experts say that encouraging pole and line fishing would be better for the environment, but this method isn’t widespread because it’s labor-intensive, requiring manpower, skill and time. However, many Maldivians aim to keep the tradition alive.
8. What does paragraph 1 mainly focus on?
A. Explaining Maldivians’ daily life. B. Showing major industries in the Maldives.
C. Describing a traditional fishing method. D. Introducing the fishing history.
9. What can be inferred from Hamid Abdallah’s words?
A. His family is struggling a lot. B. His family is well-equipped.
C. His family is falling behind. D. His family is thinking ahead.
10. What is the problem with catching fish with nets according to the text?
A. Small fish species may escape from the nets.
B. It has a major impact on the export of tuna.
C. Unwanted fish end up in the fishing net.
D. Lots of accidents happen in the process of fishing.
11. What does the author say about pole and line fishing?
A. It’s highly profitable. B. It’s time-consuming.
C. It’s cost-efficient. D. It’s knowledge-intensive.

Human-like robots have helped doctors perform operations on pigs for the first time. This is a big step forward, as it is the first time such robots have been used to operate on living animals. Scientists believe these robots could make special surgery cheaper and easier to get in the future.
A team at the University of California San Diego tested whether two-legged robots could help human doctors. The robots first practiced simple tasks like picking up objects and using medical tools. Human doctors controlled them from special machines, which allowed them to work more carefully and see the operation area more clearly.
After the robots learned these basic skills, they moved on to harder tasks: removing gall bladders (胆囊) from pigs. The pigs were given medicine so they would not feel pain. Pigs, like humans, can live healthy lives without gall bladders. In one operation, a human doctor controlled the robot while another doctor helped next to the animal. In another, two robots worked together, both guided by doctors at the machines.
Robot surgery already exists in hospitals. The Da Vinci system, for example, lets doctors guide robot arms to do careful tasks using a special camera for difficult operations. However, these old systems are large and costly, making them hard to deploy in many places.
The human-like robots, called “Surgie,” have clear advantages. They are smaller, easier to move, and much cheaper to produce. This could allow doctors to control them from far away, bringing special surgery to patients in far areas who cannot easily reach hospitals.
“Our goal is a future operating room where robots and humans work side by side as a team,” said engineer Michael Yip. Doctor Shanglei Liu added that the technology could be very useful “in dangerous places or areas that are hard to reach.”
While there are still problems to solve, this success shows a promising future. The researchers believe these robots could change healthcare, helping patients in poor areas get timely treatment no matter where they live.
12. Why did the robots practice simple tasks first?
A. To improve their basic skills. B. To reduce need for doctors.
C. To ensure security in use. D. To prepare for harder tasks.
13. What does the underlined word “deploy” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Design and build. B. Repair and fix up.
C. Launch and apply. D. Study and test out.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards robot surgery?
A. Hopeful. B. Doubtful. C. Worried. D. Unclear.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Robots: A Helpful Hand in Hospitals B. Robots: A Team with Doctors
C. Robots: A Promising Tool for Surgery D. Robots: A New Way to Cure
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下列短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Travel is enriching yet environmentally costly — plastics are a key contributor. Committing to plastic-free travel habits cuts your environmental impact while exploring the world.
Ideally, packing snacks for your travels helps save money and reduce waste. 16 To minimize the impact, consider plastic-free snack alternatives — like nuts, dried fruits, or homemade sandwiches — and pack them in reusable containers. You can also visit local markets for fresh, unpackaged snacks.
Bringing a filtered water bottle is a game-changer for reducing plastic waste. You can refill it from any water source thanks to its built-in filter, eliminating the need for plastic bottles. By carrying one, you’re not only reducing plastic waste but saving money on bottled water purchases. 17
Solid shampoo bars are an excellent plastic-free alternative that eliminates the need for liquid shampoo bottles. Their solid form makes them ideal for carry-on luggage and you can store one in a wooden container. 18 This simple step prevents it from softening.
Many of you already bring reusable bags to the grocery store. 19 Simply extend it to your travels by packing one for souvenirs. This makes it easy to decline plastic bags, making your souvenir shopping a positive experience for the environment.
20 When planning your travel, look for those that provide water refill stations to support your use of reusable bottles. Also, choose properties that have replaced single-use plastics with alternatives like bamboo toothbrushes and paper drinking straws.
By adopting eco-friendly practices, you’ll not only reduce your plastic footprint but also inspire fellow travelers to do the same.
A. You can take the habit a step further.
B. Remember to let it air dry completely after use.
C. It’s a win-win for your wallet and the environment.
D. Consciously avoiding plastic products goes a long way.
E. Besides, you never have to question the safety of the water.
F. Prioritize hotels that have adopted plastic reduction initiatives.
G. However, the reality is that many ready-made options are plastic-wrapped.

Mary watched as students crowded around a notice announcing that the school’s radio station was looking for a second host. Butterflies filled her stomach — she had always dreamed of becoming a campus host.
The radio station was a big deal: it aired music, school announcements, and entertaining shows that everyone tuned into during lunch breaks. Olivia, the current host, was confident and talented, earning widespread admiration. In contrast, Mary was naturally shy, and speaking in front of others made her nervous. Still, she decided to give it a try, even as a classmate remarked, “You? You can barely read aloud in class without tripping over your words!”
Not discouraged, Mary practiced every evening by reading aloud from her textbooks. At first, she tripped over her words, but gradually her reading grew smoother and her pronunciation clearer. She even borrowed books on public speaking from the library to learn vocal techniques. While her classmates chatted and laughed, she quietly absorbed every detail, determined to build her skills.
The day of the interview finally arrived. Holding the cold microphone, Mary felt her hands grow sweaty. She read the required texts perfectly — practiced repeatedly thousands of times — but she struggled during the improvised (即兴的) part.
“Sir, I’ve been practicing for months, and I’m willing to work hard to learn,” she begged.
Mr. Carter smiled gently and said, “I appreciate your determination and your excellent reading. But during a live broadcast, anything can happen, and you need to draw your audience’s attention with genuine emotion rather than simply reading from a script.”
That day, no one passed the interview; everyone left except Mary. Lost in thought, she realized, “The problem isn’t with my pronunciation or reading…” It suddenly struck her that she could join the radio team in a supporting role to learn what it truly takes to be a host.
注意:
1.写作词数应为150左右;
2.请在答题卡的相应位置作答。
She asked Mr. Carter for permission and began by taking on small tasks.
Then one day, Mr. Carter rushed in with unexpected news: Olivia had suddenly fallen ill.
