My Views on Ranking the Three Keys to Academic Success
Of the three keys to academic success, I rank them as follows: interest first, method second, and effort third.
Interest is the most important. It turns learning from a duty into a pleasure. When we are truly interested in a subject, we are willing to spend time on it and actively look for better ways to learn. Method comes next. A good method helps us learn more efficiently. With the right approach, we can achieve better results with less wasted effort. Effort, though necessary, comes last. Without interest and proper methods, hard work alone may not lead to success.
In short, interest gives us direction, method improves our efficiency, and effort pushes us forward.
第二节(满分25分)
参考范文:
Suddenly, his son approached quietly. The boy held out the thick stack of cash — his entire savings meant for the bike. His eyes were filled with determination and pure love. “Here, Dad. You could use this to replace your tools,” the boy said softly, extending the envelope with trembling hands. Casey looked at the money and his son’s hopeful face. Tears welled in his eyes as he gently pushed the money back. “But you need to work,” the boy insisted, stepping closer with determination. “I can wait for the bike. You cannot wait.”
Hearing his son’s words, Casey pulled him into a tight, comforting hug. “Son, this is for your bike,” Casey whispered, his voice trembling with deep emotion. “I couldn’t take that from you. You worked too hard for this. Insurance will help cover the loss, but your heart helps more. Knowing you care like this means everything to me.” The boy nodded, relieved but proud. At that moment, Pettus felt warmth replace the day’s fear. His son’s selfless act reminded him that even in chaos, family brings light and joy.

I dreamed of a life beyond the noisy streets of Gazipur, Bangladesh. I longed for international academic fame to create opportunities. Hard work was never my challenge. It was a matter of money. I knew how much my parents had already sacrificed for my education, and I never wanted my dream to become a burden to them. So I determined to make a way on my own.
I’d seen older kids win international Olympiads and receive scholarships to study abroad. Their stories inspired me. I collected my certificates and documents. Applying for every scholarship and Olympiad I could find, I imagined winning an international Olympiad and earning a fully funded opportunity.
I studied until 2:00 am every night, surrounded by silence. Yet, setbacks still held me back. In the Open Doors: Russian Scholarship Project, I scored 69, but the qualifying score was 70. Missing by one mark was heartbreaking. I tried other competitions, but failure followed failure. I wondered if the dream was meant for me.
Still, deep inside, the dream remained. I kept telling myself to keep going. When I entered the International Finance Olympiad, I was no longer the same student. Past failures had made me tougher and more committed. Even when exhausted, I forced myself to pick up my pen and solve one more problem.
The wait was agonizing. Then, one evening, I opened the result list with trembling hands. My heart beat fast. I saw my name: Rank 12. Winner. In disbelief, I checked the other lists. I had actually won four Olympiads in four different subjects! It didn’t feel real. In a flash, I recalled every late night. I had no privileges, only perseverance. This victory reminded me that success belongs to those who keep going despite the struggle.
Never let your dreams die. No matter how many setbacks or failures you face, keep working hard, keep learning, and never stop trying. Dreams may take time, but with perseverance, determination, and faith, they can become reality.
24. What prevented the author pursuing his dream?
A. Noisy learning environment. B. Parent’s sacrifices.

26. What does the underlined word “agonizing” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Painful. B. Exciting. C. Tolerable. D. Pitiful.
27. What message does the text mainly convey?
A. Accept failure whenever it comes.
B. Stick to our dreams despite hardships.
C. Success requires abandoning past failures.
D. Dreams always come true with patience alone.

At a time when endless scrolling (滚屏) and constant notifications dominate daily life, a group of college students at University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) are trying something refreshingly simple: putting their phones away and reconnecting with the real world. Students on campus have started hosting no-phone parties, gatherings where attendees leave their devices behind and focus instead on conversation, creativity, and genuine human connection.
The events are organized by Project Reboot, a student-led movement focused on helping young people build healthier relationships with technology. The group is careful to point out that it is not anti-technology. Instead, its mission is to help students take back control of their attention and use technology with intention rather than let it control them.
“Technology is neither inherently (固有地) good nor bad,” the organization explains. “While it has the power to addict, distract, and depress, it also has the potential to inform, inspire, and empower.” Rather than encouraging people to abandon screens completely, Project Reboot wants students to think more carefully about how technology affects their lives and habits.
According to a survey of UC Berkeley undergraduates, 78% of students said their phone use prevents them from thinking deeply, being creative, or engaging fully with ideas. For many students, the struggle feels deeply personal. “It sucks that on a regular basis, I am having to fight with my phone. I feel like I am losing control over my life,” a student named Dawson Kelly said.
That feeling is one reason why the no-phone gatherings have resonated (引起共鸣) with so many students. Without screens competing for attention, conversations become more meaningful and people feel more present with one another. Through small but intentional habit changes, Project Reboot hopes students can strengthen qualities like mindfulness, discipline, resilience, and creativity while spending less time trapped in endless scrolling.
28. Why do the students have the no-phone parties?
A. To restore the relation to the real world.
B. To experience real gatherings.
C. To regain their creativity.
D. To improve a new way to hold socials.
29. What can the students obtain through Project Reboot?
A. Healthier relationships with others. B. Control over technology.
C. Resistance to technology. D. Intention to use attention.
30. How does phone use affect most students in the survey?
A. It makes them physically ill. B. It causes them to fail exams.
C. It weakens their ability to reflect. D. It prevents them from sleeping well.
31. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Berkeley’s War Against Phones B. How to Plan a Student Gathering
C. The Dark Side of Modern Devices D. No-phone Parties Help Reclaiming Attention
D
In some cities, pigeons are unappreciated. They search for thrown particles of food and stare blankly at passersby. It’s led some people to falsely believe that pigeons aren’t very intelligent or worthy of the space they take up.
But it’s time to change our thinking. Humans domesticated (驯化) pigeons thousands of years ago, and part of the reason why they gather around humans is that they’ve lost much of their survival instinct (本能). Beyond even that, they’re highly intelligent creatures that don’t get nearly the credit they deserve.
A study published in 2015 noted that the visual systems used by pigeons have a lot in common with those of humans. The researchers decided to put that visual recognition to the test in a high-risk situation. Pigeons were trained with food reinforcement to recognize the difference between images of malignant and benign (恶性与良性) human tissue samples. Once they were up to speed, they proved to be incredibly accurate at identifying the cancerous images.
What’s especially fascinating is that the researchers were able to demonstrate real learning and pattern recognition by the birds. They were able to generalize their learnings, meaning they weren’t just memorizing the correct answers to the images they trained on. Once trained, they still kept the accuracy when looking at novel images they’d never seen before.
The study found that the average trained pigeon was about 85% effective in identifying cancerous images. However, when pigeons were grouped together four at a time — called “flock sourcing” — their accuracy rose to a staggering 99%.
“The birds’ successes and difficulties suggest that pigeons are well-suited to help us better understand human medical image perception,” the researchers concluded, “and may also prove useful in performance assessment and development of medical imaging hardware, image processing, and image analysis tools. ”
32. What is the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 1?
A. To present a prejudice for further discussion.
B. To explain why pigeons are clever.
C. To show pigeons’ city behaviors.
D. To state pigeons have lost their instincts.
33. What does the 2015 study reveal about pigeons?
A. They merely remember training samples.
B. They nearly keep the recognition accuracy at 85% in groups.
C. They can recognize images of cancerous tissue samples.
D. They can identify images faster through food rewards.
34. What does the flock sourcing data suggest about pigeons?
A. Individual pigeons are incapable.
B. Four pigeons are the best work group.
C. Pigeons’ ability remains to be unknown.
D. Collective work improves their performance.
35. What is the researchers’ attitude to using pigeons in medicine?
A. Strongly doubtful. B. Cautiously hopeful. C. Fully confident. D. Sharply critical.

For new College students, the large number of opportunities can be both exciting and overwhelming. On any given day, there might be academic lectures, student club activities, career workshops, or social gatherings. While these activities are valuable, balancing them with academic and personal life is not easy. 36 They offered practical advice on how to deal with this challenge.
37 Students should focus on what truly matters and plan ahead, while also making room for activities that bring energy, such as exercising, spending time with friends, or exploring the city. Having a strong support system and knowing when to step back are also highly valued. With so many choices available, it is wise to make careful decisions about which events to attend, concentrating on those that truly interest you.
Leaving room for spontaneity (自发行为) is also worth paying attention to — whether it is meeting someone for coffee or joining an unexpected event. This approach can help students enjoy campus life more fully and explore different parts of the city. 38
Organizational tools like calendars and to-do lists can help students manage their time wisely. 39 This frees students to focus on what matters just as much to them — building relationships with classmates. True balance, however, is not about filling every minute of the day, but about constantly asking oneself what is truly important at any given moment.
For those with a particularly heavy workload, it is advisable to set aside several hours each week for undisturbed study. More importantly, getting a full eight hours of sleep every night should not be overlooked. 40 Quality rest is considered essential for mental health, academic success, and overall well-being.
In short, there is no one-size-fits-all plan for balance. The key lies in making conscious choices, staying flexible, and knowing what to prioritize.
A. Being intentional with time is very important.
B. In this way, they avoid sticking strictly to a fixed schedule.
C. Having a complex schedule helps students make true options.
D. Regarding them, current students have shared their experiences.
E. By using time wisely, they can finish readings and assignments early.
F. Such methods can make students know how to communicate with others.
G. Though this may mean spending less time on other areas, it’s worthwhile.

For a foreign visitor, a Chinese teahouse feels like another time — yet it lives in modern cities. 56 a quiet afternoon, I left the busy streets and 57 (go) into one in an old area. The smell of tea, soft music, wooden tables, and small cups made it a peaceful place.
The waiter suggested Longjing tea (Dragon Well tea). 58 (watch) the leaves unfold in a glass cup as hot water 59 (pour) over them was like a small ceremony. I learned that tea is not just a drink — it is about preparing, enjoying, 60 talking with others.

My Views on Ranking the Three Keys to Academic Success
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Casey Pettus was a well-known contractor in his town. Every day, he would start his work early. He’d drive his trusty truck to different construction sites, carrying a variety of tools. These tools were like his loyal companions, helping him build and repair things. Of course, he bought insurance for his truck and tools just in case.
Meanwhile, his nine-year-old son had a secret dream of owning a shiny dirt bike. To achieve the goal, the boy ran a neighborhood business diligently (勤奋地), dragging heavy trash cans for neighbors, saving every earned dollar painstakingly week after week in a thick envelope hidden in his drawer.
That Wednesday, Pettus was driving to Cedar City when he noticed a slow leak in one of his tires. He planned to make it to a nearby tire shop despite worsening weather. He was on the phone with his brother, who urged Casey to pull over so he could come help, when Pettus heard a large boom.
He felt his entire body rock. For a few terrifying moments, he struggled to process what had happened. It took him several seconds to realize the truth — his truck had been struck by lightning.
Within seconds, the truck lost all electrical power. Without power steering, Pettus fought to guide the vehicle safely onto the shoulder as heavy rain poured down around him. Smoke began rising from the dashboard and passenger side. He grabbed only his phone, wallet, and keys, then stumbled (踉跄) out, leaving behind every tool he owned. Just minutes later, the truck was completely engulfed (吞没) in flames. What had once been his mobile workshop was reduced to a pile of ashes.
Pettus walked away unharmed. He knew the truck itself had protected him from the lightning’s full force. But the tools he relied on for his contracting business were gone. Returning home, Pettus found the silence was heavy with worry. Pettus sat outside with his family, staring at the ground, anxious about how to rebuild his business.
