66. The Understanding of Going to School
This is a funny but enlightening cartoon, in which a mother is sending her son to school. However, the youngster responds, “Why am I going to school if my phone already knows everything?”
As a senior high student, I think it is essential to acquire not only knowledge, but also cooperation and communication skills at school. Also, it is the process rather than the outcome that counts. Therefore, we shouldn’t misunderstand the meaning of going to school.
Education does not merely mean “knowing everything”. Thus, parents and teachers should educate their kids to cultivate the awareness.

The boiling water suddenly hit Kathy with something. Just as the large pot needed constant and enough firewood to boil, learning a skill required consistent effort and patience. Giving up halfway was like letting the fire die out before water warmed up. She understood why she had failed at so many hobbies — she had never persisted long enough to see real progress. “Dad, I understand now. Mastering the violin requires patience, not hurry. I’ll keep practicing earnestly, never giving up halfway.” Her eyes lit up with a new understanding as she thanked her father for his silent but meaningful lesson.
Since then, Kathy has totally changed. She practiced the violin with steady determination, no longer discouraged by unpleasant sounds. She repeated difficult passages patiently, making small improvements each day. She actively sought guidance from her teacher and corrected mistakes. Gradually, her playing became smooth and beautiful. This experience taught her that success never comes easily. Only by sticking to a goal with perseverance can one turn a simple dream into a remarkable achievement.

Imagine waking up one morning to find your smartphone missing. You can no longer get guided to work, order your coffee, or connect with friends. For most of us, it is a nightmare (噩梦). But it should not be exactly far-fetched.
Despite being more digitally connected than ever, we are lonelier and more anxious. Anxiety rates increased by 25% globally. Depression now affects over 280 million people worldwide. All of this is due to our growing dependence on social media and smart technologies designed to offer quick relief but often at the expense of deep, meaningful engagement, which may further cause our loss of something easy to be ignored.
While these conveniences offer short-term relief, they may weaken our thinking skills. For example, GPS has undeniably transformed how we travel. But a 2020 study found that frequent GPS users struggle more with self-guided navigation. Over time, those who depended more on GPS showed a sharp decline in spacial memory and problem-solving skills. However, reducing dependence on these conveniences can lead to discomfort. In seeking comfort today, we might be trading away some discomfort.
That is the problem: the very discomfort we avoid is often what strengthens us. Viewing stress, a kind of discomfort, as a challenge rather than a threat leads to better outcomes. Research shows that mild stress can enhance adaptability. Neuroscience (神经科学) reveals that neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to form new connections — is enhanced through challenging experiences. This adaptability is crucial for developing resilience, (抗逆力), a process fueled by both mental challenges and active effort.
But this doesn’t mean we should reject comfort entirely; it’s to balance it with intentional discomfort. Think of it as “microdosing hardship” — a series of small, manageable difficulties that keep our mental and emotional muscles strong, such as writing with a pen, or washing dishes by hand. These small acts are enough to reawaken the resilience we’ve buried under layers of ease. So, the next time you feel the pull of ease, pause. Ask yourself: Is this momentary comfort helping me grow or is it keeping me stuck? Choosing discomfort isn’t easy, but sometimes, it’s worth it.
24. What does the underlined word “far-fetched” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Possible to change. B. Certain to function.
C. Unlikely to be settled. D. Unable to be accepted.
25. What may digital conveniences cause according to the text?
A. The fast but worthless relief. B. The meaningful engagement.
C. The loss of thinking capacity. D. The lack of necessary comfort.
26. Which is a real-life application of “microdosing hardship”?
A. Taking the stairs instead of the lift.
B. Ordering take-out food after work.
C. Exploring a new city by using GPS.
D. Writing an email using voice-to-text.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. GPS: the invisible cost of convenience
B. Stress: the main cause of brain damage
C. Discomfort: a hidden source of resilience
D. Smartphones: barriers to human progress
C
A new kind of fuel made from the power of the sun, which could revolutionize motoring, has been invented by scientists. The solar-powered technology changes carbon dioxide and water into liquid fuel that can be directly dropped into a vehicle’s engine.
The researchers from the University of Cambridge controlled and used the power of photosynthesis (光合作用) to transform CO₂, water and sunlight into multi-carbon fuels — ethanol and propanol (乙醇和丙醇) — in a single step. These fuels have a high energy density and can be easily stored or transported, according to scientists whose work was published in Nature Energy.
“Shining sunlight on the artificial leaves and getting liquid fuel from carbon dioxide and water is an amazing bit of chemistry,” said Dr Rahaman, the new study’s first author. “Normally, when you try to change CO₂ into another chemical product, you almost always get CO or syngas, but here, we’ve been able to produce a practical liquid fuel just using the power of the sun.”
They managed this by developing a specific catalyst (催化剂), optimized to allow the artificial leaves to produce more complex chemicals. Unlike fossil fuel, these solar fuels produce net zero carbon emissions, and unlike most bioethanol, they do not take any agricultural land away from food production. “While the technology is only in the laboratory phase, the ‘artificial leaves’ are an important step in the transition away from a fossil fuel-based economy,” the researchers said.
Bioethanol is often regarded as a cleaner alternative to gas since it’s made from plants instead of fossil fuel. The United States is the world’s largest bioethanol producer. Almost 45% of all corn grown in the USA is used for ethanol production.
Currently, the artificial leaves and the specific catalyst are proof of concept devices and demonstrate only limited performance. The researchers are now working to optimize the light absorbers so that they can better absorb sunlight and optimize the catalyst so it can transform more sunlight into fuel. Further work will also be needed so the device can be mass-produced and make large volumes of fuel.
28. What is a potential advantage of the new fuels?
A. Accelerating photosynthesis. B. Storing ethanol and propanol.
C. Promoting the use of renewable energy. D. Increasing the speed of current vehicles.
29. What did Dr Rahaman mainly want to show in paragraph 3?
A. The components of the artificial leaves.
B. The difficulty of changing CO₂ into CO.
C. The innovation of the transformation process.
D. The factors of producing a practical liquid fuel.
30. What did the researchers say about the new fuels?
A. They are less economical than fossil fuel.
B. They mark a significant shift from fossil fuel.
C. They are merely appropriate for laboratory use.
D. They require more agricultural land than bioethanol.
31. What does the last paragraph tell us about the artificial leaf technology?
A. Its ability to thoroughly replace fossil fuel.
B. Its improving efficiency and production capacity.
C. Its present widespread application and performance.
D. Its immediate impact on the mass-producing artificial leaves.

The adoption of AI in sectors like healthcare, education, and finance has accelerated, driven by advancements in machine learning, natural language processing, and generative AI. A Gartner survey reveals that 80% of enterprises are now leveraging AI in some form, up from 50% in 2022, highlighting its rapid integration into business operations.
One of the most notable trends in 2024 is the rise of generative AI tools, such as OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google’s Gemini. These tools have revolutionized content creation, with 35% of companies using them for marketing, customer service, and product development, as reported by McKinsey. Additionally, the education sector has seen a surge in AI adoption, with 60% of high schools in the U.S. incorporating AI-powered platforms to personalize learning experiences, according to EdTech Magazine.
However, the widespread use of AI has also raised concerns. A Pew Research study found that 52% of Americans are worried about AI’s impact on jobs, particularly in industries like retail and manufacturing, where automation is replacing human labor. On the other hand, 67% of professionals believe AI will create more jobs than it displaces, as noted in a World Economic Forum report. Ethical concerns, such as data privacy and algorithmic bias, remain critical challenges. For instance, 45% of consumers in a Deloitte survey expressed distrust in AI systems due to potential misuse of personal data.
In conclusion, 2024 is a pivotal (关键的) year for AI, marked by unprecedented growth and adoption across industries. While challenges like job displacement and ethical concerns persist, the potential benefits of AI in driving innovation, efficiency, and personalized solutions are undeniable. As AI continues to evolve, its impact on society will depend on how effectively we address these challenges and harness its potential for good.

Have you ever gazed at a test question and wondered where on earth it came from? You’re just certain the teacher has never covered the information, because it isn’t in your notes. 36 And furthermore, they got the question right.
37 It is a common frustration. Very few people can write fast enough or can concentrate long enough to record everything the teacher says.
As you can imagine, college lectures can be much longer and more detailed than the lectures you receive in high school. For this reason, many college students deal with the potential problem of missing critical information by developing a personalized form of shorthand (速记).
38 You don’t have to learn a squiggly-line (潦草书写的) language. You simply come up with a set of symbols or abbreviations (缩写) for common words that you find in lectures.
Developing shortcuts in your writing is not a new idea, of course. The trick is to develop a good system and to do it well. 39 Try these tips:
★Develop a list of the most commonly used words and make shortcuts for them.
★Practice your course-specific shorthand at the beginning of the term when your text is still new and you’re curious and excited about the information. Find a few interesting passages and practice writing them in shorthand
★If possible, find a study partner to read the passages to you. 40
★ Time yourself for each passage you practice. Pretty soon you’ll start to build up speed.
A. To do that, you have to practice.
B. Find the common terms for the passage.
C. We miss things when we take class notes
D. Look through the textbooks for each course

Like any young person at her age, Kathy was a big dreamer. She once longed to be a professional dancer, practicing diligently for hours in the dance studio. Before long, however, she found she lacked real enthusiasm for dancing and began to consider quitting.
Her father was seated at the kitchen table reading a newspaper when she mentioned her latest ambition. His eyebrows knitted with concern as he said, “Your dreams have shifted from horse riding to swimming, then to dancing, and now the violin.” He let out a soft sigh, “You’ve never committed to anything long enough to master it.”
“I’ll persevere this time, Dad. I won’t quit halfway,” Kathy promised firmly. After a moment of quiet thought, her father nodded in approval, saying, “Hold on to your resolution this time,” wishing his daughter’s new interest would grow into lasting devotion.
Months slipped by quickly, yet Kathy’s violin still produced sharp, unpleasant sounds. Overcome with disappointment, she doubted whether she should give it up altogether. Noticing her low spirits, her father patted her shoulder gently and led her to a nearby river. He handed her a big iron pot and asked her to boil some water.
Kathy collected dry branches, filled the pot with river water, and lit the fire. But the pot was too large; when the firewood burned out, the water remained cold. Determined to succeed, she gathered more wood, even as a splinter (刺) pricked her finger and made it bleed. With her father’s support, she kept the fire blazing steadily until the water finally boiled violently.
