UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity includes a rich variety of traditions. In December 2025, four more elements joined the list.
Hezhen Yimakan storytelling
Hezhen Yimakan storytelling is an oral tradition of the Hezhen ethnic group in northeast China. What makes it remarkable is that its safeguarding programme was also selected for UNESCO’s Register of Good Safeguarding Practices — the first time an element has achieved both a transfer and an inscription on that register at the same time.
Deepavali
Deepavali, or Diwali, is India’s festival of lights, celebrated on the new moon in October or November. Families clean their houses and decorate doorways with colourful patterns to welcome good fortune. People light oil lamps, set off fireworks, exchange sweet treats with relatives, and pray for prosperity. The festival strengthens family and community ties across generations, promoting kindness, hope and mutual respect among neighbours.

In old days, shepherds used its unique tones to call their cattle and pass simple messages over long distances. Today, it is widely performed in choirs, local gatherings and folk festivals, symbolizing Swiss Alpine identity and keeping the mountain-living people’s ancient lifestyle alive.

My teacher was one of the people I most wanted to see whenever I visited New York City. Usually I’d call her as soon as I was settled, and it was thrilling to hear her voice and then to arrange a meeting time. But in 2024, when I turned 75 and she was 96, I put off making the call. Each time I thought about phoning her, I feared that when I said my name, she would say, “Who?”
I first met Lore Segal in 1975, when I took her writing class at Columbia University. Back then, all I knew about her was that she’d recently lost her husband. I hadn’t known that when she was a little girl, her family went through a series of ups and downs and that at 10 years old, she was even transported alone all the way to England, where she drifted between different temporary homes.
Small and self-confident, Lore had a pale face and curly hair. She was particular, her whole manner changing when someone expressed something pompous (言辞浮夸的) or emotional. She said firmly that no one ever again needed to describe someone drinking coffee or getting into and out of a car. She also stated that for a reader to remember a particular detail, you had to write it one and a half times, a rule both impossible to follow and true. When she leaned toward a text, I saw the obvious pleasure she took in sharing a passage and felt the pleasure welling up in me.
Lore held student conferences at her apartment near school. When it was my turn, we sat beside each other and she went page by page through my novel-in-progress manuscript. No one had ever before read my work so closely or seen anything special in me. And now came this extraordinary moment: my teacher was reading my words and laughing.
4. Why did the author delay calling Lore in 2024?
A. Lore refused to meet him. B. He was fully occupied with work.
C. He lost interest in meeting her. D. He worried she might forget him.
5. What do we know about Lore’s childhood?
A. She travelled a lot alone. B. She weathered bitter blows.
C. She lived in a fixed house. D. She taught writing in England.
6. What can we infer about Lore’s attitude towards writing?
A. She thought short articles work best. B. She hated all daily scene descriptions.
C. She ignored students’ writing faults. D. She prized plain and meaningful writing.
7. How did the author feel during one-on-one talks?
A. Inspired and valued. B. Shy and awkward.
C. Calm and indifferent. D. Nervous and uneasy.
C
You finish a meal, feel completely full, and then someone opens a box of dessert. A moment ago, your body seemed finished with food. Now, suddenly, dessert sounds possible. We usually think of hunger as the only thing that drives eating. In one sense, that’s true. But modern life surrounds us with something that biology did not quite prepare us for: a constant stream of food cues — packaging, bakery windows, delivery photos…
A recent study in Appetite studied why we may not be able to avoid overeating when faced with these food cues. For the study, 90 university students rated their current hunger and the desirability of eleven foods and on this basis two foods of equal rating were selected. Halfway through the experiment, they were fed one of the two foods until they no longer wanted more of it. After the meal, participants rated once again and as a result, they rated the food they ate as less desirable and the food showed “devaluation”. So far, this sounds like common sense: If you eat enough potato chips, the chips should become less tempting. If you eat enough brownies, brownies should lose some of their magic. The study confirmed that people themselves reported experiencing this.
However, when researchers recorded students’ reward positivity signal in their brain, the results told a different story. The early brain signal did not shrink when participants saw images of the food they had just stuffed themselves with. The mind can “know” that a food is no longer worth pursuing, but a fast and automatic part of the brain still reacts to its cue as though it carries reward.
This study helps explain one of the most frustrating aspects of eating. Overeating is not always a simple failure of willpower. It may begin earlier than that, in the split second when a food cue grabs the brain before deliberate control has had time to catch up. This suggests that self-control may not begin by erasing temptation (诱惑), but by overriding it. The first wave of evaluation may still arrive, but later processes can still step in and say no. Seen this way, self-control is not the absence of desire. It is the ability to outlast a signal that the brain continues to generate.
8. What is the modern challenge of eating?
A. Wide availability of food. B. Intense biological hunger.
C. Mounting emotional pressure. D. Frequent exposure to food signals.
9. What does the underlined word “devaluation” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. A drop in its market price. B. A growing attraction to people.
C. A decline in its original appeal. D. A reduction in its daily supply.
10. What is the purpose of paragraph 3?
A. To question the study’s findings. B. To introduce a new food experiment.
C. To explain the reason behind hunger. D. To reveal the mind-brain contradiction.
11. What can we learn about self-control from the last paragraph?
A. It results from the first food evaluation. B. It develops through repeated practice.
C. It involves acting against lasting urges. D. It requires getting rid of desire for food.
D
A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) challenges long-held assumptions about human cooperation. Traditionally, cooperation has been studied through repeated interactions that allow individuals to build trust and win-win relationships, adjusting their behavior based on others’ actions. However, many real-world situations, such as volunteering or donating to crisis relief, involve one-time decisions with no anticipated future interactions. This study, co-authored by Dr. Natalie Struwe, Prof. Esther Blanco alongside Prof. James Walker, explored how individuals cooperate when they only have one opportunity to do so within a social group.
Their experiments involving over 2,000 participants examined the benefits from cooperation in public good provision. Despite increased benefits, there was no significant change in how much individuals were willing to cooperate. As participants did not expect others to cooperate more when benefits increased, they were unlikely to increase their own cooperation efforts — even when the benefits of cooperation doubled.
“Our findings highlight a gap in our understanding of cooperative behavior in single-encounter settings,” said Dr. Struwe. “Self-interest conflicts with social interests. With higher benefits from cooperation, however, this conflict is much lower and we would expect to see much higher cooperation rates. But, we were surprised to find that even significantly increased benefits did not lead to greater cooperation efforts.”
“We couldn’t believe the results ourselves at first, double-checked the data several times, and repeated the study with several populations,” said Professor Esther Blanco. “In the end, we gathered nearly 2,000 data points, conducting experiments online with the general population from the UK. No matter what we did, the results remained consistent. Participants were willing to invest about 40% of their available money to boost group earnings, regardless of the setting.”
“Cooperation in one-time situations is more common than we think.” Explained Prof. Walker. The study’s results have important implications for encouraging cooperation in urgent, one-time scenarios like disaster relief and highlight the need for a deeper understanding of cooperative behavior, a defining characteristic of humanity.
12. What did the previous study center on?
A. Cooperation shown in crises.
B. Interaction boosted by bonds.
C. Interaction repeated among strangers.
D. Cooperation based on constant interactions.
13. What factor may affect participants’ willingness to cooperate?
A. Expectations of others.
B. Higher rewards.
C. Joint efforts of the team.
D. Interest conflicts.
14. What is Blanco’s finding about cooperation levels?
A. They increased regularly.
B. They varied greatly.
C. They were relatively stable.
D. They were unpredictable.
15. What would be the best title for the article?
A. The Impact of Trust on Cooperation Decisions
B. Reevaluating Benefits in Cooperative Behavior
C. Human Interaction: Beyond Long-Term Firm Cooperation
D. Rethinking Cooperation: Insights from One-Time Decisions

Ah, punctuality — the art of being precisely on time. It’s a concept so deeply rooted in some cultures that even being a minute late can cause a small-scale panic attack. ____16____ Let’s examine whether punctuality is the defining feature of a superior society or merely another subjective construct.
Each part of the world has a unique relationship with time, enriching the fabric of global culture. In Japan, for example, you’re always expected to arrive on time, and preferably a few minutes early. ____17____ Tough luck, but the next one will be there precisely on the dot. In contrast, the Philippines has a more relaxed approach to time. If someone says 3 o’clock, arriving around 3:30 is common and expected. This isn’t laziness, but a cultural preference for living in the moment.
But does being punctual make a culture more advanced? The Swiss are celebrated for their precision and punctuality, often cited as a perfect example of efficiency. Their trains run on time, and their watches are the gold standard. ____18____ And Switzerland is often ranked as one of the most developed and happiest countries in the world, but let’s wait a bit to conclude.
Consider the case of Brazil, where “Brazilian time” is a well-known concept. ____19____ If you attend a party at the specified time, you’ll likely find the host still in their bathrobe. Many Brazilians have a laid-back approach to life. They don’t sweat the small stuff like running five minutes late because they’re busy enjoying life. Many live by the motto, “Tudo bem”, which means “It’s all good.” Honestly, they seem to be onto something.
So, is punctuality essential? It depends on what cultures you are in. Whether you’re a stickler for punctuality or more laid-back, what truly matters is how you spend your time. ____20____ Let’s try to find the middle ground where we can respect others’ time while embracing the joy of living in the moment. Ultimately, time is just a construct, and life is too short to stress about being late.
A. Miss a train by a minute?
B. Punctuality is timeless art.
C. But is punctuality essential?
D. In this context, punctuality is flexible.
E. You could set your clock by their daily routine.
F. There, being late is not only accepted but expected.
G. Are you enjoying the journey or constantly watching the clock?

I met Gunter on a cold, wet and unforgettable evening in September. I had planned to fly to Vienna and take a bus to Prague for a conference. Due to a big storm, my flight had been delayed by an hour and a half. I touched down in Vienna just 30 minutes before the departure of the last bus to Prague. The moment I got off the plane, I ran like crazy through the airport building and jumped into the first taxi on the rank without a second thought.
That was when I met Gunter. I told him where I was going, but he said he hadn't heard of the bus station. I thought my pronunciation was the problem, so I explained again more slowly, but he still looked confused. When I was about to give up, Gunter fished out his little phone and rang up a friend. After a heated discussion that lasted for what seemed like a century, Gunter put his phone down and started the car.
Finally, with just two minutes to spare we rolled into the bus station. Thankfully, there was a long queue (队列) still waiting to board the bus. Gunter parked the taxi behind the bus, turned around, and looked at me with a big smile on his face. "We made it," he said.
Just then I realised that I had zero cash in my wallet. I flashed him an apologetic smile as I pulled out my Portuguese bankcard. He tried it several times, but the card machine just did not play along. A feeling of helplessness washed over me as I saw the bus queue thinning out.
At this moment, Gunter pointed towards the waiting hall of the bus station. There, at the entrance, was a cash machine. I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the machine, and popped my card in, only to read the message: "Out of order. Sorry."
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

D 5. B 6. D 7. A

根据第一段“But in 2024, when I turned 75 and she was 96, I put off making the call. Each time I thought about phoning her, I feared that when I said my name, she would say, “Who?” (但在2024年,我75岁,她96岁时,我推迟了打电话。每次我想到要给她打电话,我就担心当我说出我的名字时,她会说:“谁?”)”可知,作者推迟打电话是因为他担心老师可能已经忘记了他。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“I hadn’t known that when she was a little girl, her family went through a series of ups and downs and that at 10 years old, she was even transported alone all the way to England, where she drifted between different temporary homes. (我当时不知道,当她还是个小女孩的时候,她的家庭经历了一系列的起伏,10岁时,她甚至独自一人被送到英国,在不同的临时住所之间漂泊。)”可知,Lore的童年经历了家庭变故和颠沛流离,即她经历了痛苦的打击。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“She said firmly that no one ever again needed to describe someone drinking coffee or getting into and out of a car. She also stated that for a reader to remember a particular detail, you had to write it one and a half times, a rule both impossible to follow and true. (她坚定地说,再也不需要有人描述某人喝咖啡或上下车了。她还说,为了让读者记住一个特定的细节,你必须把它写上一遍半,这是一个既不可能遵循又正确的规则。)”可知,Lore反对浮夸空洞的描写,强调写作应精炼而有意义。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“No one had ever before read my work so closely or seen anything special in me. And now came this extraordinary moment: my teacher was reading my words and laughing. (从来没有人如此仔细地读过我的作品,也没有人看出我有什么特别之处。现在,这个非凡的时刻到来了:我的老师读着我的文字,笑了起来。)”可知,一对一交流时作者感受到被重视,备受鼓舞。
D 9. C 10. D 11. C
根据第一段“But modern life surrounds us with something that biology did not quite prepare us for: a constant stream of food cues — packaging, bakery windows, delivery photos… (但现代生活中充斥着人类生理机制尚未完全适应的事物:源源不断的食物线索——包装、面包店橱窗、外卖照片……)”可知,现代饮食的挑战是频繁接触食物信号。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段“After the meal, participants rated once again and as a result, they rated the food they ate as less desirable and the food showed “devaluation”. So far, this sounds like common sense: If you eat enough potato chips, the chips should become less tempting. If you eat enough brownies, brownies should lose some of their magic. (饭后,参与者再次评分,结果,他们认为他们吃的食物没那么有吸引力,食物显示出devaluation。到目前为止,这听起来像是常识:如果你吃了足够的薯片,薯片应该会变得不那么诱人。如果你吃了足够的布朗尼,布朗尼应该会失去一些魔力。)”可知,devaluation指的是食物变得不那么诱人,食物原有吸引力的下降。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“However, when researchers recorded students’ reward positivity signal in their brain, the results told a different story. The early brain signal did not shrink when participants saw images of the food they had just stuffed themselves with. The mind can “know” that a food is no longer worth pursuing, but a fast and automatic part of the brain still reacts to its cue as though it carries reward. (然而,当研究人员记录学生大脑中的奖励积极信号时,结果却有所不同。当参与者看到他们刚刚塞满自己的食物的图像时,早期的大脑信号并没有缩小。大脑可以“知道”一种食物不再值得追求,但大脑的一个快速而自动的部分仍然会对它的提示做出反应,就像它带来了奖励一样。)”可知,第三段旨在揭示大脑自动反应与主观认知之间的矛盾。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“This suggests that self-control may not begin by erasing temptation (诱惑), but by overriding it. The first wave of evaluation may still arrive, but later processes can still step in and say no. Seen this way, self-control is not the absence of desire. It is the ability to outlast a signal that the brain continues to generate. (这表明,自控可能不是从消除诱惑开始,而是通过克服诱惑来实现。第一波评价可能仍会到来,但稍后的过程仍能介入并说“不”。这样看来,自控不是没有欲望。它是超越大脑持续产生的信号的能力。)”可知,自控涉及在持久的冲动面前采取行动予以抵制。

D 13. A 14. C 15. D

根据第一段中“Traditionally, cooperation has been studied through repeated interactions that allow individuals to build trust and win-win relationships, adjusting their behavior based on others’ actions.(传统上,合作是通过反复的互动来研究的,这种互动允许个人建立信任和双赢的关系,并根据他人的行为调整自己的行为)”可知,以往的研究集中在基于持续互动的合作上。
根据第二段“As participants did not expect others to cooperate more when benefits increased, they were unlikely to increase their own cooperation efforts — even when the benefits of cooperation doubled.(由于参与者预计当收益增加时其他人不会更多地合作,所以他们不太可能增加自己的合作努力——即使合作的收益翻倍)”可知,对他人的期望可能影响参与者的合作意愿。故选A项。
根据第四段中“Participants were willing to invest about 40% of their available money to boost group earnings, regardless of the setting. (无论在何种情况下,参与者都愿意拿出约40%的可用资金来提高团队收益)”可知,Blanco发现合作水平相对稳定。故选C项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS)challenges long-held assumptions about human cooperation. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
C 17. A 18. E 19. F 20. G

上文“It’s a concept so deeply rooted in some cultures that even being a minute late can cause a small-scale panic attack.(守时这一概念在某些文化中根深蒂固,以至于哪怕迟到一分钟都可能引发一场小规模的恐慌)”强调了守时在部分文化中的重要性。
上文“In Japan, for example, you’re always expected to arrive on time, and preferably a few minutes early.(例如,在日本,人们总是被要求准时到达,最好还能提前几分钟)”说明了日本对守时的严格要求。空后“Tough luck, but the next one will be there precisely on the dot.(运气不好,但下一班列车会准点到达)”提到了“下一班列车”,可推断空处与“错过列车”相关。
上文“The Swiss are celebrated for their precision and punctuality, often cited as a perfect example of efficiency. Their trains run on time, and their watches are the gold standard.(瑞士人以精准和守时著称,常被视为效率的完美典范。他们的火车准时运行,而手表则是黄金标准)”详细描述了瑞士人的守时和精准。空处需要进一步补充瑞士人守时的表现,与前文为顺接补充关系。E项“你可以根据他们的日常作息来校准时钟。”形象地体现了瑞士人作息的规律性和守时性,是对前文“精准和守时”的进一步说明,符合语境。
【19题详解】
上文“Consider the case of Brazil, where “Brazilian time” is a well-known concept.(以巴西为例,“巴西时间”是一个众所周知的概念)”引出巴西的时间观念。空后“If you attend a party at the specified time, you’ll likely find the host still in their bathrobe.(如果你按指定时间参加派对,很可能会发现主人还穿着浴袍)”说明巴西人对迟到的包容。
上文“Whether you’re a stickler for punctuality or more laid-back, what truly matters is how you spend your time.(无论你是严守守时的人还是更随性的人,真正重要的是你如何度过时间)”强调“如何度过时间”比“是否守时”更重要。

Yours,
Li Hua
One possible version:
Dear Ben,
I’m truly grateful for the reading project you’ve started. Meaningful as the project is, I find myself struggling with it.
Honestly, I am often blocked by unfamiliar vocabulary, which greatly reduces my reading efficiency and gradually hurts my reading confidence. Besides, I can hardly keep up with the complicated plot lines of the novel. Worse still, even if I look up every single word, combining them into a full sentence still makes little sense, making it quite challenging to catch the hidden meanings of the text.
Could you please share some practical solutions? I would highly appreciate it if you could give me some advice.
Yours,
Li Hua

Sorry."
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
I ran back to Gunter and told him the bad news.

Para 1
I ran back to Gunter and told him the bad news. He looked at me in disbelief, asking me what to do. Flashing him another apologetic smile, I begged him for a delayed payment. “If I miss this last bus to Prague, I’ll be late for the conference which is so important that I can’t afford to miss it!” I explained. “May I have your phone number? I will call you and return the money I owe you. I promise I will keep my word or you keep my watch!” I added, handing him my watch as well as my business card. Gunter accepted my business card but rejected my watch. He wrote down his phone number and gave it to me. “Just keep your promise, Sir.” A feeling of gratitude washed over me as I heard his words. Giving him a firm handshake, I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the bus, and jumped onto it just before its departure.
Para 2
Four days later, when I was back in Vienna, I called Gunter as promised. He picked me up at the bus station where he had dropped me off four days before. Beaming a warm smile at him, I gave him a big hug the moment I saw him. We chatted happily on the way to the airport. I told him that thanks to his generosity and timely help, everything had gone smoothly. When he stopped his taxi outside the airport, I paid him for the “double car ride”, back and forth from the airport to the bus station, together with a generous tip that he turned down. I also gave him an attractive souvenir I had bought at Prague, which he accepted with delight. We became good friends and kept in touch with each other regularly. I felt blessed to have such a warm-hearted friend like Gunter.
