My name is Linda, and I just started my first year at Sunshine High School. I still remember my first day clearly — it was a mix of excitement and nervousness.
When I woke up that morning, my heart was beating fast. “What if I don’t make any friends?” I thought to myself. “What if the teachers are too strict?” My mother noticed I was anxious and gave me a hug (拥抱). “Just be yourself,” she said. “Everything will be fine.”
When I arrived at school, the campus was much bigger than that of my junior high school. I stood at the gate, feeling a bit frightened, when a boy with a big smile came up to me. “Hi! Are you a freshman too?” he asked. “I’m Zhang Wei. I’m looking for Room 305 for my first class.”
“I’m Linda. I have class in Room 305 too!” I said, surprised and relieved (放心的). We walked to the classroom together, chatting about our summer holidays and our favorite subjects. By the time we reached the room, I already felt much more confident.
Our head teacher, Ms. Wang, gave a warm welcome speech. She told us that senior high would be challenging but also full of opportunities. She encouraged us to explore new things, join clubs and make friends from different classes.
In the afternoon, we had a campus tour. I was amazed by the large library, the modern science labs and the beautiful greenhouse. I decided right then that I wanted to join the volunteer club and the literature club.
By the end of the day, I was tired but happy. I had made a new friend, met my teachers and found my way around the campus. The anxiety I felt in the morning was gone. I was looking forward to the years ahead.

Sixteen-year-old Marcus Johnson is a sophomore (高二学生) at Lincoln High School in Chicago. He is among the top students in his grade, captain of the school basketball team and a volunteer at the local community centre. How does he deal with such a busy life? “Time management is everything,” Marcus says with a smile. “I learned the hard way that you cannot do everything at once. You have to decide what is most important and stick to your schedule.”
In his freshman year, Marcus took on too much. He joined the basketball team, debate club, volunteer club and school newspaper. He also took advanced math and science courses. Within two months, he felt exhausted (疲惫不堪的). His grades dropped, and he could hardly stay awake in class. “I remember falling asleep during a history lecture,” Marcus recalls. “My teacher was unhappy. That was when I realized I had to make a change.”
Marcus talked over his situation with his parents and advisor. They decided he should give up the debate club and the school newspaper so he could focus on basketball, volunteer work and schoolwork. He also began to use a planner to arrange his time. “Every Sunday evening I plan my week. I note homework deadlines, basketball practices and volunteer tasks. Then I set aside time for study, meals and sleep. It may sound boring, but it works,” Marcus explains.
Marcus also learned to turn down extra activities. When friends invited him to take part in the school play, he politely declined. “I like acting, yet I cannot take on more work. It is better to do a few things well than many things poorly,” he says. Now Marcus’s grades have returned to the top level. His basketball team performs well, and he keeps doing volunteer work each Saturday. He believes high school life calls for balance: choose what truly matters instead of trying everything.
43. What trouble did Marcus meet in his freshman year?
A. He failed every exam. B. He got on badly with classmates.
C. He left the basketball team. D. Too many activities lowered his grades.
44. What does the underlined word “declined” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Accepted. B. Refused. C. Forgot. D. Debated.
45. What is the key to managing a busy schedule in Marcus’s opinion?
A. Getting enough sleep. B. Joining as many clubs as possible.
C. Planning ahead and picking key tasks. D. Asking for less homework.
46. What lesson can we learn from Marcus’s story?
A. Students should study only. B. Study-activity balance is important.
C. Sports beat good grades. D. Teenagers should stop volunteer work.
【答案】43. D 44. B 45. C 46. B

Social media (社交媒体) has become an important part of teenage life. A Pew Research Center study finds that nearly all US teens use at least one social media platform, and nearly half stay online almost all the time. But does heavy screen time do good or harm to young teenagers?
On the one hand, social media helps teens keep in touch with friends and family. Shy students can find safe online groups to express their true feelings. Many also learn new things through educational videos and online study teams. It even helped students keep learning and communicating when schools could not open during the pandemic (大流行病).
On the other hand, social media brings clear risks to young users. It influences teenagers’ mental health. Teens spending long hours online are more likely to feel anxious or lonely. Social media often shows people’s perfect lives, which makes teens feel unsatisfied with their own everyday life. Besides, social media can be addictive. App creators design their apps to keep users viewing posts. Likes and short messages give quick rewards, making it hard for teens to focus on schoolwork.
Experts advise teens to set clear screen-time limits for themselves. Parents and schools should work together and teach them to judge online information wisely and tell facts from online tricks.
Social media itself is neither good nor bad. It is simply a tool. Its influence depends on how users make use of it. The key is balance (平衡): enjoy online connection while valuing our real-world life and face-to-face relationships.
47. What does the Pew Research Center study show?
A. Most US teens use social media often. B. Social media harms all teenagers.
C. Teens prefer books over online chats. D. Social media use keeps falling year by year.
48. Why does social media upset some teenagers?
A. It brings them much bad news. B. It costs much money to use.
C. It cuts their real-life friendships. D. It shows perfect lives hard to match.
49. What is the author's attitude to social media?
A. He sees both good and bad sides. B. He sees only its advantages.
C. He sees only its problems. D. He feels greatly worried about it.
50. What is the best title for the text?
A. Teens Should Give Up Social Media B. How Teens Chat on Social Platforms
C. Social Media: Finding the Right Balance D. Social Media: A Way to Make New Friends
【答案】47. A 48. D 49. A 50. C
【解析】
【原文】文章介绍社交媒体已成为青少年生活重要部分,从正反两方面阐述社交媒体对青少年的利弊,最后提出社交媒体本身只是工具,关键在于把握使用的平衡。
【47题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第一段“A Pew Research Center study finds that nearly all US teens use at least one social media platform, and nearly half stay online almost all the time.(皮尤研究中心的一项研究发现,几乎所有美国青少年都至少使用一个社交媒体平台,近一半的人几乎一直在线)”可知,大多数美国青少年经常使用社交媒体。
【48题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Social media often shows people’s perfect lives, which makes teens feel unsatisfied with their own everyday life.(社交媒体经常展示人们完美的生活,这让青少年对自己的日常生活感到不满)”可知,社交媒体上展示的完美生活让青少年感到难以企及,从而产生不满和沮丧的情绪。
【49题详解】
推理判断题。文章第二段(On the one hand...)讲述了社交媒体对青少年的积极作用,第三段(On the other hand...)

Senior high school is not just about studying — it’s about growing, discovering who you are and making memories that will last a lifetime.
