Lila had dreamed of joining the city track team since she was twelve. However, a sudden knee injury threw her dream off track during high‑school training. Her doctor warned her that running at a competitive level might bring lasting damage. For months, Lila locked herself away, refusing to watch any sports matches.
One afternoon, her former coach Mr. Hale paid her a visit. He did not talk about races or medals. Instead, he brought a photo of a runner who had returned from a serious injury. “Success is not always crossing the finishing line first,” he told her gently. “Sometimes it is about finding your new place in sports.”
His words struck a chord. Lila started to think differently. She could no longer compete as an athlete, yet her love for track remained alive. She volunteered to help at local youth running events. She learned to record performance data, give basic warm‑up guidance and cheer for young runners. At first, she felt out of place, unsure whether she belonged there. Gradually, she found great joy in seeing teenagers make progress step by step.
One day, a 13‑year‑old girl came up and thanked her sincerely. “Without your encouragement, I would have given up long ago,” the girl said. At that moment, Lila realized she had found her own achievement. True sports spirit was not merely personal glory. It could also mean lighting the way for others.
24. What happened to Lila at first?
A. She lost a very important race. B. Her coach gave up on her.
C. She failed to enter the city track team. D. She got her knee hurt in training.
25. How might Lila feel after talking with her former coach?
A. Touched. B. Painful. C. Defeated. D. Challenged.
26. What do we know about Lila according to the last two paragraphs?
A. She decided to take part in more races.
B. She began to receive medical treatment.
C. She chose to forget everything about track sports.
D. She devoted herself to youth sports volunteer work.
27. Which of the following best expresses the theme of the text?
A. Practice makes perfect for young runners.
B. Sports achievement can exist in different forms.
C. Victory belongs to those who never give up races.
D. Personal glory is the most valuable prize in sports.
C
Bus shelters tend to be practical structures. They offer protection from severe weather. Seating while you wait. Maybe an ad to grab your attention. But a green bus stop movement is seeking to create gardens on bus shelters. These facilities, first popularized in the Netherlands, have been spreading across Europe.
Green bus shelters typically involve five key parts. The green roof structure must support significant weight, so a brand-new roof is ideal. Above the roof comes the root barrier, an impermeable (不可渗透的) layer of fabric, plastic, or rubberized material that prevents plant roots from growing downward. On top of this barrier sits the drainage (排水) system, which collects and stores rainwater for the plants and gradually lets out extra water without flooding city drains.
The soil for a green roof should be lighter and more mineral-based than typical houseplant soil, to increase rainwater storage. For vegetation, native plants are ideal, as they support local biodiversity. Zoe Davis, senior project manager for Boston, noted that their plant selections have attracted butterflies, birds and squirrels.
One key advantage of green bus shelters is their ability to fight urban heat islands. Living roofs can provide more shade than glass roofs, and they don’t absorb and release heat the way a blacktopped roof would. Instead, they can hold water long enough for it to evaporate (蒸发), producing a cooling effect. Living roofs have been documented to reduce surrounding air temperatures by up to 6℃.
For Utrecht, a city in the Netherlands, one goal of building green bus shelters was to address a rapid decline in the bee population. Some green bus shelters in the US are primarily demonstration projects. These novelty installations may influence how people think about vegetation in their surroundings. Boston estimates that if all 8,000 of its bus stops featured living roofs, it would create about 17 acres of green space—roughly the size of 13 football fields. And when living roofs are built on a larger scale, they can have real environmental effects.
28. What makes green bus shelters different from common ones?
A. Seats for waiting passengers. B. Protection against bad weather.
C. Eye-catching advertisements. D. Eco-friendly roof structures.
29. Which picture shows the appropriate green roof structure?
30. How does the author mainly explain the cooling effect in paragraph 4?
A. By giving a definition. B. By providing evidence.
C. By making comparisons. D. By listing numbers.
31. What does Boston’s estimation in the last paragraph imply?
A. The high cost of the movement.
B. The huge potential of the project.
C. The urgency of rebuilding bus stops.
D. The difficulty of promoting green roofs.
D
Nearly half of all Americans and around 40% of Britons now use smartwatches or phone apps to track their sleep. Are these devices accurate and do the users get a better night’s rest?
Not enough sleep can cause health problems. A new study, published in Nature, finds a U-shaped relationship between how long people sleep and markers of biological ageing. Those who got between 6.4 and 7.8 hours of shut-eye a night seemed to experience slower ageing than those who slept either more or less.
Sleep trackers promise to help people hit this sweet spot. Apps typically record movement and sound, sometimes inferring breathing rates from the sound. Smartwatches record movement and measure blood flow by shining low-intensity light onto the skin and detecting how much reflects back.
Most trackers are very good at telling sleep from being awake. Several studies have compared them to polysomnography (多功能睡眠记录仪), which uses electrodes (电极) to record eye movements, brain activity and heart rate, and is the gold standard for measuring sleep. One paper, published in Sensors, found three tested popular trackers agreed with polysomnography around 95% of the time in telling sleep from wakefulness across the night.
When it comes to identifying the different sleep stages, trackers are less accurate. A good night requires cycling between rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep, in which dreams take place, and several stages of non-REM sleep ranging from light to deep. Wearables agree with polysomnography on sleep-stage classification only around 50-80% of the time. “That is equal to a C+ to B+,” says Rebecca Robbins, a sleep scientist at Harvard.
Despite trackers’ shortcomings, Dr Robbins says they give people a better, more objective sense of how long they slept. Plus, they do seem to improve sleep habits. In a survey, 55% of adults who reported using sleep trackers said they had changed their behaviour and improved sleep quality after learning from the data.
Too much data can have downsides, though. Unlike trying to eat healthily or exercise, putting more thought into sleeping can backfire. As many as 30% of those who track their sleep report feeling anxious. But sleep data is not worth losing sleep over, because there is an alternative to sleep tracking: whether you wake up feeling rested is the best indicator of how good your night was.
32. What is the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 2?
A. To show the practice of long life. B. To show the motive (动机) of the study.
C. To indicate the harm of lacking sleep. D. To prove the importance of sleep tracking.
33. What do the underlined words “this sweet spot” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. The measurement of blood flow. B. The record of breathing rates during sleep.
C. The U-shaped relationship. D. The ideal duration of sleep.
34. What can the trackers measure most accurately?
A. The state of sleep. B. The depth of sleep.
C. The quality of sleep. D. The effects of sleep.
35. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Sleep Trackers: Easy to Handle?
B. Sleep Trackers: Affordable for All?
C. Sleep Trackers: A Good Choice or Not?
D. Sleep Trackers: A Solution to Sleep Anxiety?
Many of us face a tricky trap on social media: either chase endless likes with constant posting or escape by ignoring it all. We stress over this forced choice—approval or isolation—as if they can’t mix. 36 Here are three practical ways to find balance in the digital world.
Focus on genuine connections.
Likes and comments bring short-term excitement, but they fade fast. True connections matter more. When you share real stories or chat deeply with others, you feel warm inside. 37
So pick activities that make you feel truly good, like talking about hobbies or helping friends online—no need to care about likes!
38
Peace on social media starts with how you see it. Mindful browsing (浏览) means noticing nice things—an inspiring post, a friend’s good news—without comparing yourself. The colors of a photo or a kind word can make you smile. You don’t need big tricks. 39 Then you’ll enjoy both: staying connected and feeling peaceful.
Celebrate small digital joys.
Every little win online—sharing a useful tip, getting a sweet reply—deserves cheers. If you only wait for lots of followers, you’ll miss daily fun. Minor accomplishments in the digital world lift your mood. For example, celebrate finishing a post you care about, not just hitting a follower goal. Treat yourself to a snack after a nice chat. 40
A. Try browsing with intention.
B. Chasing likes will make you tired.
C. These turn online time into a joyful journey.
D. Just fix your attention on the little joys online.
E. In fact, mixing work and rest online helps you stay balanced.
F. But our time online doesn’t have to be stuck in this dilemma.
G. That cozy feeling from within doesn’t depend on likes or comments.

Helen was old and had trouble walking. The first time I saw her, I had just moved to the new
neighbourhood. A neighbor warned, “Everybody here is nice except her. Keep your distance.”
I was optimistic — I wouldn’t judge my unknown neighbor. One morning, I waved at her enthusiastically, but she just stared at me and turned away, leaving me annoyed. “Forget her,” I thought. I avoided Helen since then for the next 15 years, even though we lived within 50 feet. Once, I saw her
shout at a teen whose bike blocked her driveway — the fight got so heated that the police were called.
We never spoke or even looked at each other until my 40th birthday. I planned a big gathering, inviting my mom and many friends. On the party day, friends’ cars packed the road, some occupying a corner of the entrance to Helen’s driveway. Helen began to scream angrily. When I apologized and explained the circumstances, she became combative (好斗的). “I’m not going to allow this. I will call
the police every ten minutes!” She was to make the day hard.
My mother was nearing seventy. She took control of the situation. She headed across the street, walked slowly using her cane (拐杖) and approached Helen. From a distance, I watched anxiously. I
was afraid Helen was about to hit my mom. But she did not.
My mother returned after twenty minutes. She told me Helen had been worried that she wouldn’t be able to get her car out quickly in an emergency. My mother assured her we would all help if needed. Mother also learned that Helen lived alone because she lost all her family in a car accident — a tragedy
I’d never known about.
My mother spoke of Helen without complaint, but with quiet empathy (同情). But all I could
think was that as long as Helen didn’t cause any more trouble that day, I’d be very satisfied.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150左右;
And Mom insisted that I invite Helen to the party.
I had expected the talk in the party with Helen to be brief.

One possible version:
And Mom insisted that I invite Helen to the party. Though still filled with doubt, I gathered my courage to ask if Helen would like to come to my birthday party. I had expected a “No” as an answer, but Helen accepted my invitation without hesitation. Moments later, she showed up with a delicate handmade present, wearing a warm smile. Watching her quietly join the guests, I felt a strong wave of guilt flooding my heart, realizing I had blindly labeled her as rude for fifteen years,
simply out of prejudice (偏见).
I had expected the talk in the party with Helen to be brief. On the contrary, we talked warmly for quite a long time. She shared her deep loneliness and constant fear of emergencies after losing all her family while I apologized sincerely for my previous coldness and misunderstanding. Gradually, I found that her bitterness melted away and that a bright smile lit up the whole room. From that day on, we became close neighbors with a strong bond. This unexpected experience taught me a valuable lesson: never judge a person’s behavior before truly understanding their
hidden sufferings.

M: Welcome to Shanghai. I am your guide. Now I’ll tell you what you’ll do during your trip in Shanghai. This morning, you’ll visit the Shanghai Tower first. It’s the highest landmark of Shanghai. There you can take the fastest elevator in the world, and have a bird’s-eye view of the entire city. You’ll have lunch at a restaurant nearby at noon. After lunch, it’s time to explore the ancient part of Shanghai—Yu Garden. There you can see what an old garden of Shanghai looks like. You can try to find the five dragons there. After supper you’ll be on the Bund. You can walk slowly to look at the old and new buildings on the two sides. The next day, you’ll take a sightseeing bus to Zhujiajiao Water Town. Zhujiajiao Water Town is the nearest water town to Shanghai and it takes about 40 minutes to get there. There you can walk along the bridges and by the river, and relax in a rowing boat. This lovely town will make you forget that you are by a big city. After that, you’ll be taken to the airport.
A
The science of biodiversity: Costa Rica部分“Enjoy guided walks around several reserves and national parks with local conservationists.(与当地的环保专家一同在多个保护区和国家公园内进行有导游带领的徒步旅行)”和Alaskan brown bear, ecology and wilderness adventure部分“Guided by expert naturalists, gain fascinating insights into bear ecology.(在经验丰富的自然学家的带领下,你将深入了解熊类的生态习性,收获诸多令人着迷的见解)”可知,二者的共同点是由专家提供指导。故选C。
根据最后一部分“Accompanied throughout by passionate naturalist James Costa, who will bring the islands to life through dynamic lectures and engaging discussions.(在整个过程中,都会有一位充满激情的自然学家詹姆斯·科斯塔相伴左右。
故选A。
B
24. D 细节题。第一段 a sudden knee injury threw her dream off track 直接定位。
25. A 推理题。
26. D 细节题。 She volunteered to help at local youth running events。
1. 生词控制:选必一核心词汇为主,少量高考高频短语 throw … off track, strike a chord, out of place,和单元词汇高度匹配;
2. 文本词数:全文 312 词,与新高考 B 篇词数保持一致;
C
根据第一段“Bus shelters tend to be practical structures. They offer protection from severe weather. Seating while you wait. Maybe an ad to grab your attention. But a green bus stop movement is seeking to create gardens on bus shelters. (公交站往往是实用性建筑。它们为人们抵御恶劣天气,提供候车座椅,或许还有吸引你目光的广告。但一场绿色公交站运动正力求在公交站上打造花园。)”可知,绿色公交站区别于普通公交站的是环保的屋顶结构。
【29题详解】A 细节理解题。根据第二段“The green roof structure must support significant weight, so a brand-new roof is ideal. (绿色屋顶结构必须能够承受较大重量,因此全新的屋顶是理想选择。屋顶上方是阻根层,一层由织物、塑料或橡胶材料制成的不可渗透层,用于防止植物根系向下生长。阻根层上方是排水系统,该系统为植物收集储存雨水,并逐步排出多余水分,避免城市排水系统积水泛滥。)”以及第三段“The soil for a green roof should be lighter and more mineral-based than typical houseplant soil, to increase rainwater retention. For vegetation, native plants are ideal, as they support local biodiversity. (绿色屋顶所用土壤应当比普通室内盆栽土更轻、矿物质含量更高,以此提升雨水留存能力。对于植被而言,本土植物是理想选择,因为它们能够维系当地生物多样性。)”可知,绿色屋顶结构从下到上依次为:承重屋顶→根阻层(材质为织物、塑料或橡胶)→排水系统→专用土壤→本土植被,对应A选项图示。
【30题详解】C 推理判断题。根据第四段“Living roofs can provide more shade than glass roofs, and they don’t absorb and release heat the way a blacktopped roof would. (生态屋顶能比玻璃屋顶提供更多阴凉,且不会像沥青屋顶那样吸收和释放热量。)”可知,作者通过将生态屋顶与玻璃屋顶、沥青屋顶进行对比,解释其降温原理与降温效果。
【31题详解】B 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Boston estimates that if all 8,000 of its bus stops featured living roofs, it would create about 17 acres of green space—roughly the size of 13 football fields. And when living roofs are installed on a larger scale, they can have real environmental effects.
根据第二段中“A new study, published in Nature, finds a U-shaped relationship between how long people sleep and markers of biological ageing. Those who got between 6.4 and 7.8 hours of shut-eye a night seemed to experience slower ageing than those who slept either more or less. (发表在《自然》杂志上的一项新研究发现,人的睡眠时间与生物衰老指标之间存在U型关系。每晚睡眠时长在6.4至7.8小时之间的人,衰老速度似乎慢于睡得更多或者更少的人。)”及第三段中“Sleep trackers promise to help people hit this sweet spot. (睡眠追踪器有望帮助人们达到this sweet spot。)”可知,“this sweet spot”指第二段提到的、能延缓衰老的6.4到7.8小时的理想睡眠时长,也就是最优睡眠时长。
【34题详解】A 细节理解题。根据第四段“Most trackers are very good at distinguishing sleep from being awake. Several studies have compared them to polysomnography, which uses electrodes to record eye movements, brain activity and heart rate, and is the gold standard for measuring sleep. One paper, published in Sensors, found three tested popular trackers agreed with polysomnography around 95% of the time in telling sleep from wakefulness across the night.
根据文章第一、二段“Nearly half of all Americans and around 40% of Britons now use smartwatches or phone apps to track their sleep. C “Sleep Trackers: A Good Choice or Not? (睡眠追踪器:到底是不是好选择?)”精准概括文章核心,适合作为标题。
第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,共12.5分)
【导语】文章主要介绍了如何在社交媒体中避免陷入追求点赞或自我孤立的两难困境,并提供了三个实用的方法来在数字世界中找到平衡。
【详解】36. F根据前文“We stress over this forced choice—approval or isolation—as if they can’t mix.(我们在这种被迫的选择——认可或孤立——中感到压力,仿佛它们无法融合。)”以及后文“Here are three practical ways to find balance in the digital world.(这里有三种在数字世界中找到平衡的实用方法。)”
37. G根据前文“When you share real stories or chat deeply with others, you feel warm inside.(当你分享真实的故事或与他人深入交谈时,你会感到内心温暖。)”以及后文“So pick activities that make you feel truly good, like talking about hobbies or helping friends online—no need to care about likes!(所以选择那些让你感觉真正好的活动,比如在网上谈论爱好或帮助朋友——不需要关心点赞!)”
38. A根据空后的“Peace on social media starts with how you see it. Mindful browsing (浏览) means noticing nice things—an inspiring post, a friend’s good news — without comparing yourself.(在社交媒体上获得内心的平和,始于你看待它的心态。有意识地浏览,指的是留意那些美好的事物——一篇鼓舞人心的动态、朋友传来的喜讯,而不去和他人攀比。)”可知,本段主要讲述要有意识地、带着目的去浏览社交媒体,A选项“Try browsing with intention.(尝试有目的地浏览。)”能概括本段主题,适合作本段小标题。
39. D根据前文“You don’t need big tricks.(你不需要什么大技巧。)”以及后文“Then you’ll enjoy both: staying connected and feeling peaceful.(然后你就能同时享受这两者:保持联系并感到平静。)”
40. C根据前文“Treat yourself to a snack after a nice chat.(在一次愉快的聊天后,请自己吃点零食。)”可知,前文列举了庆祝数字世界中微小快乐的具体行为,C选项“These turn online time into a joyful journey.(这些将上网时间变成了一段快乐的旅程。)”中的“These”指代前文提到的“celebrate finishing a post”和“Treat yourself to a snack”等行为,作为本段的总结句,符合语境。

Lila had dreamed of joining the city track team since she was twelve. However,a sudden knee
injury threw her dream off track during high-school training. Her doctor warned her that running at
a competitive level might bring lasting damage. For months,Lila locked herself away, refusing to
watch any sports matches.
One afternoon, her former coach Mr.Hale paid her a visit. He did not talk about races or
medals.Instead,he brought a photo of a runner who had returned from a serious injury."Success is
not always crossing the finishing line first,"he told her gently."Sometimes it is about finding your
new place in sports.”
His words struck a chord.Lila started to think differently. She could no longer compete as an
athlete, yet her love for track remained alive. She volunteered to help at local youth running events.
She learned to record performance data, give basic warm-up guidance and cheer for young runners.
At first, she felt out of place, unsure whether she belonged there.Gradually, she found great joy in
seeing teenagers make progress step by step.
One day,a 13-year-old girl came up and thanked her sincerely."Without your encouragement,
I would have given up long ago,"the girl said.At that moment,Lila realized she had found her own
achievement.True sports spirit was not merely personal glory. It could also mean lighting the way
for others.

Bus shelters tend to be practical structures. They offer protection from severe weather.Seating
while you wait.Maybe an ad to grab your attention. But a green bus stop movement is seeking to
create gardens on bus shelters. These facilities, first popularized in the Netherlands, have been
spreading across Europe.
Green bus shelters typically involve five key parts. The green roof structure must support
significant weight,so a brand-new roof is ideal.Above the roof comes the root barrier,an
impermeable(不可渗透的)layer of fabric, plastic,or rubberized material that prevents plant roots
from growing downward. On top of this barrier sits the drainage()system,which collects and
stores rainwater for the plants and gradually lets out extra water without flooding city drains.
The soil for a green roof should be lighter and more mineral-based than typical houseplant soil,
to increase rainwater storage. For vegetation, native plants are ideal,as they support local
biodiversity.Zoe Davis, senior project manager for Boston, noted that their plant selections have
attracted butterflies,birds and squirrels
One key advantage of green bus shelters is their ability to fight urban heat islands.Living roofs
can provide more shade than glass roofs, and they don't absorb and release heat the way a
blacktopped roof would.Instead, they can hold water long enough for it to evaporate ()
producing a cooling effect.Living roofs have been documented to reduce surrounding air
temperatures by up to 6C.
For Utrecht,a city in the Netherlands, one goal of building green bus shelters was to address a
rapid decline in the bee population. Some green bus shelters in the US are primarily demonstration
projects. These novelty installations may influence how people think about vegetation in their
surroundings.Boston estimates that if all 8,000 of its bus stops featured living roofs,it would create
about 17 acres of green space-roughly the size of 13 football fields. And when living roofs are
built on a larger scale, they can have real environmental effects.
28.What makes green bus shelters different from common ones?
A.Seats for waiting passengers.
B.Protection against bad weather.
C.Eye-catching advertisements.
D.Eco-friendly roof structures.

Nearly half of all Americans and around 40%of Britons now use smartwatches or phone apps
to track their sleep. Are these devices accurate and do the users get a better night's rest?
Not enough sleep can cause health problems.A new study, published in Nature, finds a
U-shaped relationship between how long people sleep and markers of biological ageing. Those who
got between 6.4 and 7.8 hours of shut-eye a night seemed to experience slower ageing than those
who slept either more or less.
Sleep trackers promise to help people hit this sweet spot.Apps typically record movement and
sound, sometimes inferring breathing rates from the sound.Smartwatches record movement and
measure blood flow by shining low-intensity light onto the skin and detecting how much reflects
back.
Most trackers are very good at telling sleep from being awake.Several studies have compared
them to polysomnography(多功能睡眠记录仪),which uses electrodes(电极)to record eye
movements, brain activity and heart rate, and is the gold standard for measuring sleep. One paper,
published in Sensors, found three tested popular trackers agreed with polysomnography around
95%of the time in telling sleep from wakefulness across the night.
When it comes to identifying the different sleep stages, trackers are less accurate.A good night
requires cycling between rapid-eye movement (REM)sleep,in which dreams take place, and
several stages of non-REM sleep ranging from light to deep.Wearables agree with
polysomnography on sleep-stage classification only around 50-80%of the time."That is equal to a
C+to B+,"says Rebecca Robbins,a sleep scientist at Harvard.
Despite trackers'shortcomings,Dr Robbins says they give people a better, more objective
sense of how long they slept.Plus, they do seem to improve sleep habits. In a survey,55%of adults
who reported using sleep trackers said they had changed their behaviour and improved sleep quality
after learning from the data.
Too much data can have downsides, though.Unlike trying to eat healthily or exercise, putting
more thought into sleeping can backfire. As many as 30%of those who track their sleep report
feeling anxious. But sleep data is not worth losing sleep over, because there is an alternative to
sleep tracking:whether you wake up feeling rested is the best indicator of how good your night was
32.What is the author's purpose in writing paragraph 2?
A.To show the practice oflong life.
B.To show the motive(动机)of the study.

33.What do the underlined words "this sweet spot"in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.The measurement of blood flow.
B.The record of breathing rates during sleep.
C.The U-shaped relationship
D.The ideal duration of sleep.
34.What can the trackers measure most accurately?
A.The state of sleep.
B.The depth of sleep.
C.The quality of sleep.
D.The effects of sleep
35.What's the best title for the text?
A.Sleep Trackers:Easy to Handle?
B.Sleep Trackers:Affordable for All?

Many of us face a tricky trap on social media:either chase endless likes with constant posting
or escape by ignoring it all.We stress over this forced choice-approval or isolation-as if they
can't mix.36 Here are three practical ways to find balance in the digital world.
Focus on genuine connections.
Likes and comments bring short-term excitement, but they fade fast.True connections matter
more. When you share real stories or chat deeply with others, you feel warm inside.37
So pick activities that make you feel truly good, like talking about hobbies or helping friends
online-no need to care about likes!
38
Peace on social media starts with how you see it.Mindful browsing (means noticing
nice things-an inspiring post,a fiend's good news-without comparing yourself.The colors of a
photo or a kind word can make you smile. You don't need big tricks.39
Then you'll
enjoy both:staying connected and feeling peaceful.
Celebrate small digital joys.
Every little win online-sharing a useful tip,getting a sweet reply-deserves cheers.If you
only wait for lots of followers, you'll miss daily fun.Minor accomplishments in the digital world
lift your mood. For example, celebrate finishing a post you care about, not just hitting a follower
goal.Treat yourself to a snack after a nice chat.40
A.Try browsing with intention
B.Chasing likes will make you tired.
C.These turn online time into a joyful journey
D.Just fix your attention on the little joys online
E.In fact, mixing work and rest online helps you stay balanced.
F.But our time online doesn't have to be stuck in this dilemma.
G.That cozy feeling from within doesn't depend on likes or comments

Helen was old and had trouble walking. The first time I saw her,I had just moved to the new
neighbourhood.A neighbor warned,"Everybody here is nice except her.Keep your distance."
I was optimistic-I wouldn't judge my unknown neighbor.One morning,I waved at her
enthusiastically, but she just stared at me and turned away, leaving me annoyed."Forget her,"I thought.
I avoided Helen since then for the next 15 years, even though we lived within 50 feet.Once,I saw her
shout at a teen whose bike blocked her driveway-the fight got so heated that the police were called.
We never spoke or even looked at each other until my 40th birthday.I planned a big gathering,
inviting my mom and many friends. On the party day, friends'cars packed the road, some occupying a
corner of the entrance to Helen's driveway.Helen began to scream angrily. When I apologized and
explained the circumstances, she became combative ()"I'm not going to allow this.I will call
the police every ten minutes!"She was to make the day hard.
My mother was nearing seventy. She took control of the situation. She headed across the street,
walked slowly using her cane (and approached Helen. From a distance,I watched anxiously.I
was afraid Helen was about to hit my mom.But she did not.
My mother returned after twenty minutes. She told me Helen had been worried that she wouldn't
be able to get her car out quickly in an emergency. My mother assured her we would all help ifneeded.
Mother also learned that Helen lived alone because she lost all her family in a car accident-a tragedy
I'd never known about..
My mother spoke of Helen without complaint, but with quiet empathy ()But all I could
think was that as long as Helen didn't cause any more trouble that day,I'd be very satisfied.
