Target audience
Advertisers aim particular products at different groups of people according to age, sex, social class and interests. They will often make assumptions about people and label or stereotype them. Who do you think these products would be aimed at: nappies, diamonds, mint chocolates, sports cars?
What kind of products would be aimed at these people: teenagers, 25-year-old single men, 40-year-old working mums?
Brand names
Brand names are chosen carefully. They can suggest particular lifestyles, values or interests and are intended to appeal to the target audience. Nissan Primera: this suggests quality. Primera is similar to premium and premier. Ford Ka: the spelling of Ka suggests novelty and simplicity. It is modern and futuristic. It is also bound to stick in your mind when you are looking for a new car!

All pictures try to make you feel something and most are biased, even photographs. They create a view of what the world is like using different tricks such as lighting and colour. Different colours have different associations that can be linked to particular products.
Yellow: freshness, sunlight, lemons. This colour would be good for advertising washing up liquid.
Green: countryside, natural, healthy. What would you use this colour for?
What do you associate these colours with: red, black, orange, gold, blue?
Special offers / coupons
Advertisers often appear to offer ’something for nothing’: if you buy one product you will receive another one free or half price. These offers are incentive to try a new product or to encourage loyalty to an existing one.

The seven teenagers hurried towards the airport gate. Italy’s national under-16 swimming championship was taking place in Genoa and the boys were going to compete there. 14-year-old Marco Sulis looked around for his teammates. Their coach sat near them. While preparing for take-off, the flight attendant began her routine safety briefing. Most of the passengers idled away the time engaging in chatting and eating. Although air crashes are alien to Marco, he, who perceived how vital the process was, would later remember all her words.
During the flight, as earlier instructed, he located the nearest emergency exit and made a mental note of the red handle behind a protective plastic shield. To open the door, one had to remove the plastic and pull the handle.
Flanked by mountains to the north, the airport is often battered by strong winds. Flight 1553 was a short one. The sky that day was crystalline blue and visibility was perfect.
At two minutes to touchdown, the plane rocked, which was later found to be out of mechanical faults. Soon, it touched down precariously (摇摇欲坠地) on two wheels. The captain attempted to reduce the airplane’s speed by braking hard but it was no use. Slipping sideways, the plane rushed out into the sea at high speed.
Tons of water poured into the cabin. Passengers were shouting and rushing towards the emergency exit door. Marco watched people struggle with the door fruitlessly.
“Let me do it!” Marco yelled, leaping out of his seat.
Marco smashed the clear plastic with the palm of his hand. He grabbed the handle and pulled, using all the strength in his body. The emergency exit door finally swung open. However, the emergency door pinned Marco’s leg down. Passengers passed Marco as they rushed out of the plane. Already soaking in water, Marco knew there was no time to waste. He pushed against the door as hard as he could and managed to free his leg. Marco exited from the plane finally and saw his coach and teammates bobbing in the waves. He began swimming towards the concrete pier. The others followed.
When they reached the pier, they were safe at last. Even though four people were killed in the accident, many more survived because of Marco. Marco just simply said, “All I did was to watch safety briefing.”
41. What can be learnt about Marco from the first paragraph?
A. He was better trained in self-rescue skills than other teenage swimmers.
B. He held a serious attitude towards the pre-flight safety instruction.
C. He foresaw that a terrible air accident would occur during this flight.
D. He often reminded his teammates to pay attention to flight safety rules.
42. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A. The strong winds near the airport led to the plane’s sliding into the sea.
B. Good weather could not guarantee a smooth and safe landing of the aircraft.
C. The pilot should be to blame for failing to stop the plane in time.
D. Marco was the passenger sitting nearest to the emergency exit.
43. What can we know when Marco’s leg was trapped by the emergency door?
A. Marco was still trying to keep the exit door open for other passengers.
B. The emergency exit door was designed without considering passengers’ safety.
C. Marco’s action of opening the door put himself in potential danger.
D. Other passengers ignored Marco on purpose when escaping from the cabin.
44. Which of the following words can best describe Marco?
A. Sympathetic and kind. B. Strong-willed and energetic.
C. Cautious and creative. D. Courageous and modest.
45. What does the last paragraph most likely convey to us?
A. Safety briefings deserve passengers’ careful attention.
B. Teenagers are more calm and brave than adults in disasters.
C. One’s swimming ability is the key to surviving sea crashes.
D. Most air accidents can be avoided with basic safety knowledge.
B 42. B 43. C 44. D 45. A
根据第一段中“Although air crashes are alien to Marco, he, who perceived how vital the process was, would later remember all her words.(虽然Marco此前从未接触过空难,但他深知安全讲解的重要性,之后将空乘的所有安全指引都记在了脑海中)”可知,Marco对待飞行前的安全指导持有非常认真的态度。
根据第三段中“The sky that day was crystalline blue and visibility was perfect.(当天的天空澄澈湛蓝,能见度堪称完美)”和第四段中“At two minutes to touchdown, the plane rocked, which was later found to be out of mechanical faults.(在距离落地还有两分钟时,飞机开始摇晃起来,后续查明故障源于机械问题)”可知,即便天气状况极佳,也完全无法保障飞机的降落过程绝对平稳安全。
根据第七段中“However, the emergency door pinned Marco’s leg down.(然而应急舱门压住了Marco的腿)”和“Already soaking in water, Marco knew there was no time to waste.(已经泡在水里(浑身湿透),Marco知道根本没有时间可以浪费)”可知,Marco主动开门的行为让自己直接陷入了被舱门困住、身处上涨海水中的潜在危险之中。
根据第六段中“Let me do it! Marco yelled, leaping out of his seat.(Marco大喊着“让我来”,从座位上猛地跳了起来)”和最后一段中“Marco just simply said, “All I did was to watch safety briefing.”(Marco只是淡淡地表示,“我所做的不过是留意了安全简报而已。”)”
根据最后一段中“Even though four people were killed in the accident, many more survived because of Marco. Marco just simply said, “All I did was to watch safety briefing.”(尽管事故中有四人不幸遇难,但更多的乘客因为Marco的举动成功生还,Marco只是淡淡地表示,“我所做的不过是留意了安全简报而已”)”可知,作者通过这个真实的事故案例,向读者传递出飞行前的安全简报绝非无用的流程,值得每一位乘客认真留意、用心记住,关键时刻完全可以挽救众多生命。
C
When several individuals of the same species or of several different species depend on the same limited resource, a situation may appear that is referred to as competition. Competition among individuals of the same species (intraspecies competition), one of the major mechanisms of natural selection, is a major concern of ecology. It is one of the factors controlling the size of competing populations, and it may lead to the extinction of one of the competing species.
No serious competition exists when the major needed resource is in superabundant supply. Furthermore, most species do not depend entirely on a single resource. If the major resource for a species becomes scarce, the species can usually switch to alternative resources. Competition is usually the most severe among close relatives with similar demands on the environment. But it may also occur among totally unrelated species, such as seed-eating rodents (啮齿目动物) and ants. The effects of such competition are vividly demonstrated when all the animals or all the plants in an ecosystem come into competition, as happened 2 million years ago, when North and South America became joined by the Isthmus of Panama North and South American species migrating across the Isthmus came into competition with each other. The result was the extinction of a large number of the South American mammals.
To what extent competition determines the composition of a community and the density of particular species has been the source of considerable controversy. The problem is that competition must be inferred from the spread or increase of one species and the concurrent (同时发生的) reduction or disappearance of another species. The Russian biologist performed numerous experiments, in which one of the species became extinct when only a single kind of resource was available. On the basis of these experiments and field observations, the so-called law of competitive exclusion was established, according to which no two species can occupy the same niche (生态位). Numerous seeming exceptions have since been found, but they can usually be explained as cases in which the two species, even though competing for a major joint resource, did not really occupy exactly the same niche.
Competition among species is of considerable evolutionary importance. The competing for resources in the same ecological niche tends to gradually evolve in ways that allow them to occupy different niches. Competing species also tend to change their ranges so that their territories no longer overlap (重叠). The evolutionary effect of competition on species has been referred to as “species selection”; however, this description is potentially misleading. Only the individuals of a species are affected by the pressure of natural selection. The effect on the well-being and existence of a species is just the result of the selection of all the individuals of the species. Thus species selection is actually a result of individual selection.
46. According to paragraph 1, what is one effect of competition among individuals of the same species?
A. It results in the eventual elimination of the resource for which they are competing.
B. It restricts the number of individuals in the competing populations.
C. It leads to competition among individuals of the same species.
D. It encourages new species to immigrate to an area.
47. The underlined word “scarce” in Paragraph 2 probably means _________.
A. available B. vital C. limited D. alternative
48. The author mentions North and South American species in Paragraph 2 to _________.
A. account for the species composition of North and South America
B. show the ability to switch to alternative resources can give species a competitive advantage
C. prove creatures’ killing can have the same effect on species’ survival as competition
D. provide an example of the serious effects of competition between unrelated species
49. What can we learn from the law of competitive exclusion?
A. Two species competing for the same major resource usually occupy different niches.
B. Two species that do not occupy the same niche still compete with each other.
C. Competition will remove one of the species that occupy the same niche.
D. Competition won’t occur as long as two species do not occupy exactly the same niche.
50. According to Paragraph 4, “species selection” can be misleading because it _________.
A. suggests that the selection pressure directly influences the whole species
B. does not make a distinction between species extinction and species evolution
C. puts too much stress on the role of competition in species extinction
D. does not make it clear that competing species can change their ranges
B 47. C 48. D 49. C 50. A
根据第一段“It is one of the factors controlling the size of competing populations, and it may lead to the extinction of one of the competing species.(它是控制竞争种群规模的因素之一,还可能造成其中一个竞争物种灭绝)”可知,种内竞争会限制竞争种群内个体的数量。
根据第二段“If the major resource for a species becomes scarce, the species can usually switch to alternative resources.(如果一个物种的主要资源变得______,该物种通常可以转向替代资源)”可知,资源不足才需要更换资源,所以划线单词scarce表示“稀缺、有限”,与limited意义相近。
根据第二段“But it may also occur among totally unrelated species, such as seed-eating rodents (啮齿目动物) and ants. The effects of such competition are vividly demonstrated when all the animals or all the plants in an ecosystem come into competition, as happened 2 million years ago, when North and South America became joined by the Isthmus of Panama (巴拿马地峡).(但竞争也会发生在完全没有亲缘关系的物种之间,例如食籽啮齿动物和蚂蚁。当生态系统中所有动植物发生竞争时,这类竞争带来的影响会生动展现出来,200万年前巴拿马地峡连接南北美洲时就发生了这种情况)”可知,作者举南北美洲物种的例子,是为了展示无亲缘物种之间竞争产生的严重后果。
【49题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“On the basis of these experiments and field observations, the so-called law of competitive exclusion was established, according to which no two species can occupy the same niche (生态位).(基于这些实验与野外观察,所谓竞争排斥原理被确立:没有两个物种能够占据同一个生态位)”可知,若两物种占据同一生态位,竞争会淘汰其中一个物种。
根据第四段“The evolutionary effect of competition on species has been referred to as “species selection”; however, this description is potentially misleading. Only the individuals of a species are affected by the pressure of natural selection.(竞争对物种产生的进化效应被称为“物种选择”,但这个说法可能具有误导性。因为只有物种内的个体才会受到自然选择压力的影响)”可知,“物种选择”有误导性,是因为它暗示选择压力直接作用于整个物种(实际只作用于个体)。

Technology seems to discourage slow, immersive reading. Reading on a screen tires your eyes and makes it harder for you to keep your place. So online writing tends to be more skimmable and list-like than print. The cognitive neuroscientist (神经科学家) Mary Walt argued recently that this “new norm” of skim reading is producing “an invisible, game-changing transformation” in how readers process words. The brains reading-related nerve circuits now prefer fast information intake.
We shouldn’t exaggerate this danger. All readers skim. Skimming is the skill we acquire as children as we learn to read more skillfully. From about the age of nine, our eyes start to bounce around the page, reading only about a quarter of the words properly, and filling in the gaps by inference. Nor is there anything new in these fears about declining attention spans So far, the anxieties have proved to be false alarms. “Quite a few critics have been worried about attention span lately and see very short stories as signs of cultural decline,” the American author Selvin Brown wrote. “No one ever said that poems were evidence of short attention spans.”
And yet the Internet has certainly changed the way we read. For a start, it means that there is more to read, because more people than ever are writing. If you time travelled just a few decades into the past, you would wonder at how little writing was happening outside a classroom. And digital writing is meant for rapid release and response. An online article starts forming a comment string underneath as soon as it is published. This mode of writing and reading can be interactive and fun. But often it treats other people’s words as something to be quickly harvested as materials to say something else. Everyone talks over the top of everyone else, desperate to be heard.
Perhaps we should slow down. Reading is constantly promoted as a social good and source of personal achievement. But this advocacy often emphasizes “enthusiastic”, “passionate” or “eager” reading, none of which adjectives suggest slow, quiet absorption.
To a slow reader, a piece of writing can only be fully understood by immersing oneself in the words and their slow comprehension of a line of thought. The slow reader is like a swimmer who stops counting the number of pool laps he has done and just enjoys how his body feels and moves in water.
The human need for this kind of deep reading is too tenacious for any new technology to destroy. We often assume that technological change can’t be stopped and happens in one direction, so that older media like “dead-tree” books are kicked out by newer, more virtual forms. In practice, older technologies can coexist with new ones. The Kindle has not killed off the printed book any more than the car killed off the bicycle. We still want to enjoy slowly-formed ideas and carefully-chosen words. Even in a fast-moving age, there is time for slow reading.
51. What is the author’s attitude towards Selvin Brown’s opinion?
A. Favorable. B. Critical. C. Doubtful. D. Objective.
52. The author would probably agree that _________.
A. advocacy of passionate reading helps promote slow reading
B. digital writing leads to too much speaking and not enough reflection
C. the public should be aware of the impact skimming has on neuronal circuits
D. the number of Internet readers is declining due to the advances of technology
53. What does the underlined word “tenacious” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?
A. Comprehensive. B. Complicated. C. Determined. D. Apparent.
54. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. New technology will finally replace the old-style printed books.
B. Slow readers care much about how fast they finish their reading tasks.
C. Deep reading can survive even in a fast-paced digital age.
D. People will give up skimming for slow reading in the future.
55. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. Slow Reading Is Here to Stay
B. Digital Technology Prevents Slow Reading
C. Screen vs. Print: Which Requires Deep Reading?
D. Reading Is Not a Race: The Wonder of Deep Reading
51. A 52. B 53. C 54. C 55. A

根据第二段““So far, the anxieties have proved to be false alarms. Quite a few critics have been worried about attention span lately and see very short stories as signs of cultural decline,” the American author Selvin Brown wrote. “No one ever said that poems were evidence of short attention spans.”(到目前为止,这些焦虑都被证明是虚惊一场。美国作家塞尔文·布朗写道:“最近不少评论家担心人们的注意力持续时间,把短篇故事看作文化衰落的标志。从来没有人说诗歌是注意力短暂的证据。”)”可知,作者认同Selvin Brown的观点,认为人们对注意力下降的担忧是虚惊一场。
【52题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“But often it treats other people’s words as something to be quickly harvested as materials to say something else. Everyone talks over the top of everyone else, desperate to be heard.(但它常常把别人的文字当作可以快速摘取的素材,用来发表别的看法。人人互相抢话,拼命想要被听见)”可知,作者会认同数字化文字带来过多发言,缺少反思。
【53题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第六段“The human need for this kind of deep reading is too tenacious for any new technology to destroy. We often assume that technological change can’t be stopped and happens in one direction, so that older media like “dead-tree” books are kicked out by newer, more virtual forms.(人类对于深度阅读的需求十分______,任何新技术都无法摧毁它。我们常常认为技术变革不可阻挡且单向发展,纸质书这类旧媒介会被更新、更虚拟化的形式淘汰)”可知,人类对于深度阅读的需求十分坚定,新技术无法摧毁。tenacious表示坚定、顽强。
【54题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段“In practice, older technologies can coexist with new ones. The Kindle has not killed off the printed book any more than the car killed off the bicycle. We still want to enjoy slowly-formed ideas and carefully-chosen words. Even in a fast-moving age, there is time for slow reading.(实际上新旧技术可以共存。电子书阅读器并没有消灭纸质书,正如汽车没有淘汰自行车。我们依然愿意欣赏慢慢酝酿的思想与精心斟酌的文字。即便在节奏飞快的时代,我们仍有时间进行慢阅读)”可知,即便处在数字化快节奏时代,深度阅读依然能够留存。
【55题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Technology seems to discourage slow, immersive reading. The brains reading-related nerve circuits now prefer fast information intake.(科技似乎不利于沉浸式慢阅读。
At nine years old, I didn’t realize how extraordinary it was for me and my grandmother to travel from our Black neighborhood to the mainly white Revere Beach. While Black families stayed together in one section, rarely venturing out alone, my grandmother stood out — confident and athletic while swimming, unlike the other women worried about their hair or suits.
She would carry me on her back into the ocean, moving steadily along the tide. I followed my grandmother’s strong motions, thrilled by the wild sea and her fearlessness. I admired how she seemed born to the water, emerging like a queen — proud, radiant, and benevolent.
Summer made our Black bodies more visible and vulnerable against narrow cultural ideas, but my grandmother never noticed. She focused on teaching me to swim — a skill that seemed unnecessary to some, as the popular media never portrayed the “great outdoors” as a welcoming place for Black people. It was seen as a space where we might feel uncomfortable or even threatened. But to me, those perceptions didn’t matter. When I finally learned to swim, it felt like I had unlocked a profound and personal secret of strength and freedom.
I once wondered why enslaved Africans didn’t jump from ships near shore and swim to freedom. Later I learned that most coastal waters in West Africa were filled with poisonous fish, making swimming uncommon and dangerous. Now, whenever I enter the ocean, I remember my ancestors for whom the sea was a place of terror rather than freedom.
Only after my grandmother’s death did I learn she wasn’t a strong swimmer herself. She had been brushing the ocean floor with her feet all along, keeping us afloat while teaching me rhythm and trust. Her quiet deception was not a lie but a profound act of bravery and courage. Though she hadn’t mastered it herself, my grandmother was determined to teach me to swim — not for the strokes, but for the strength and self-belief that would keep me afloat in life.
56. How was the grandmother different from other women at the beach? (no more than 15 words)
_______________________________________________________
57. What made enslaved Africans not jump from ships for freedom? (no more than 12 words)
_______________________________________________________
58. What does the underlined word deception in the last paragraph mean? (1 word)
_______________________________________________________
59. Why did the author’s grandmother teach the author to swim? (no more than 8 words)
_______________________________________________________
60. What do you think of the author’s grandmother? Please explain. (no more than 20 words)
_______________________________________________________
56. She was confident and athletic unlike other women worried about their hair or suits.
57. They rarely swam due to natural dangers.
Or: Most coastal waters in West Africa were filled with poisonous fish.
Or: Most coastal waters in West Africa with poisonous fish were dangerous.
58. Cheat. / Trick. / Deceit.
59. To build her confidence.
Or: To teach her strength and self-belief.
60. She is very brave. Though she didn’t master swimming herself, she taught the author the skill to build her confidence.

A few years ago, I was standing at the barre (扶手杠) waiting for my adult ballet class when I heard a voice behind me. “So, do you have this perfect life?”

A
When you read an advertisement there are many factors you should consider, including:
• target audience
• brand names
• slogans
• pictures and colour
• special offers / coupons
• emotive / persuasive vocabulary
Slogans
A slogan has to be catchy and memorable. Slogans use a range of devices: alliteration (头韵), repetition, wordplay, questions, personal pronouns and humour.
Have a break. Have a Kit Kat. Repetition
The totally tropical taste. Alliteration
Pictures and colour
Emotive / persuasive vocabulary
In advertising you will find lots of words and phrases that are intended to persuade you or appeal to your emotions.
mouthwatering silky free chocolate
romantic creamy luxurious like mum used to make

D
