Watching a man walk every street in New York made my friend Martha and me want to do the same thing in the heart of our own hometown. Besides, Kingston is considered the most walkable city in Ontario, Canada. So, armed with nothing but a massive book of street maps, we set out to walk a minimum of 10 kilometers every Saturday until we’d covered every paved bend and dead-end street. Our 542.4-kilometer journey began on Sept 1, 2021. As keen walkers, we weren’t worried about the distance. We loved the idea of discovering parts of the city we had never seen. Every yard offered a quick look into the personality of those who owned it. Some yards overflowed with apple trees bending under the weight of fruit. Others were covered with bits of painted wood and broken metal. But more than the scenery and steps taken, the biggest discovery was the questions, the sharp observations and the thoughtful conversations shared between us. Hidden parts were uncovered as we walked and talked. I admitted my fondness for romance novels and blow-up Santas. Martha revealed her strong interest in tiny free libraries. “How are we even friends?” she joked one day. Maybe it’s because, for both of us, walking helps us stay balanced. There is a calming joy in hitting the pavement; along with an ease of conversation that comes without the face-to-face pressure that can prevent closeness. With every footstep, we became better listeners and our friendship grew. Of course, as winter set in, there were some days we longed to stay under the covers, but what had started as a lighthearted project had grown into something precious, a meet-up vital to our mental and physical well-being. And our deep conversations remained private. What happened on the pavement stayed on the pavement. Three years and six pairs of shoes later, we had walked the 542.4 kilometers. Forever changed by what started as a “what if” project and now full of confidence, we are already planning our next big walking adventure. As long as we are able, we’ll keep pulling ourselves out of bed to put one foot in front of the other. In doing so, we’ll keep discovering not just ourselves, but each other as well. 41. What inspired the author and Martha to start their walking project? A. A map book showing all roads in Kingston. B. Their desire to explore Ontario’s urban streets. C. A film about a New York street-walking challenge. D. Kingston’s reputation as Ontario’s top walking city. 42. What did the author value most about their weekly walks? A. The chance to see different types of yards. B. The mix of natural scenery and urban elements. C. The physical exercise from long-distance walking. D. The deep talks and careful observations they shared. 43. Why does the author mention their discussions about “romance novels” and “tiny free libraries”? A. To show they had similar tastes in books. B. To describe arguments about their hobbies. C. To prove their friendship was built on reading. D. To explain how walking made them more open. 44. What can be learned about the walking project in winter? A. They sometimes wanted to skip walking due to cold weather. B. They recorded their conversations to keep memories. C. They added more distance to their weekly goal. D. They invited new friends to join their walks. 45. What is the main purpose of the last paragraph? A. To describe future walking plans. B. To explain ending the current journey. C. To emphasize the project’s lasting impact. D. To compare past and present attitudes toward walking. C 42. D 43. D 44. A 45. 根据文章第四段中的“I admitted my fondness for romance novels and blow-up Santas. Martha revealed her strong interest in tiny free libraries. 玛莎透露了她对微型免费图书馆的浓厚兴趣)以及“Maybe it’s because, for both of us, walking helps us stay balanced. There is a calming joy in hitting the pavement; along with an ease of conversation that comes without the face-to-face pressure that can prevent closeness. With every footstep, we became better listeners and our friendship grew.(也许是因为,对我们俩来说,走路能帮助我们保持平衡。走在人行道上有一种令人安心的喜悦,同时交谈也变得轻松自在,没有那种会阻碍亲密感的面对面压力。每一步前行,我们都变得更加善于倾听,友谊也因此不断加深。)”可知,作者提到这些看似不同甚至有点奇怪的个人爱好,是为了说明步行这种并排走的方式消除了面对面的压力,让她们能够更坦诚、开放地分享真实的自我,从而让友谊更加深厚。 【44题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第五段中的“Of course, as winter set in, there were some days we longed to stay under the covers, but what had started as a lighthearted project had grown into something precious, a meet-up vital to our mental and physical well-being.  (当然,随着冬天来临,我们有些日子渴望窝在被子里。但这个最初只是轻松愉快的小项目,逐渐发展成了一件珍贵的事——一次对我们身心健康至关重要的相聚。)”可知,冬天天气寒冷时,她们有时确实想赖在床上不去走路(即想要跳过步行)。 【45题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“As long as we are able, we’ll keep pulling ourselves out of bed to put one foot in front of the other. In doing so, we’ll keep discovering not just ourselves, but each other as well. (只要我们还走得动,我们就会继续把自己从床上拉起来,一步一个脚印地走下去。在这个过程中,我们将继续发现不仅是我们自己,还有彼此。)”可知,最后一段升华了文章的主题,强调了这项步行计划对她们产生了深远且持久的影响,不仅改变了她们自己,也让她们在持续的脚步中不断重新发现彼此。 C With the fast development of astronomy, astronomers are eager to find a clue of the familiar: planets that are like Earth. By pushing technology to the limits, astronomers are rapidly approaching the day when they can find another Earth. The most direct approach is to take a picture of it with a telescope. However, a more effective way is to use “the Doppler technique”. This involves analyzing starlight for evidence that the moving position of the star is affected by the gravity of a planet. Nowadays, astronomers can tell when a planet is pulling its star by only one meter a second — about human walking speed. That’s enough to detect a giant planet in a big orbit, or a small planet if it’s close to its star. Another approach is to watch a star for a slight drop in its brightness. This occurs when an orbiting planet passes in front of the star and blocks part of its light. At most a tenth of all planetary systems are oriented so that these mini-eclipses (迷你日食) — called transits (凌日) — are visible from Earth. So, astronomers must monitor a lot of stars to catch just a few transits. The dream of astronomers is to discover a rocky planet roughly the size of Earth orbiting in a habitable zone, one that is neither too hot nor too cold to support life. If they succeed, they will have found what biologists believe could be a promising residence for life. The best places to look may be dwarf stars (矮星). Smaller than the sun, dwarf stars are plentiful; seven of the ten stars nearest to Earth are dwarf stars. They also provide a steady supply of sunlight to any life-bearing planets within their habitable zone. Additionally, dwarf stars are dim (暗淡的), so the habitable zone lies closer in. If the planet is closer to the star, it’s easier for astronomers to detect a transit observation. A close-in planet also has a stronger pull on its star. That makes it easier to detect with the Doppler method. 46. According to paragraph 2, astronomers analyze starlight with the aim of finding ________. A. where we can detect a giant orbit B. why a small planet is close to its stars C. how strong the power of the gravity is D. whether the movement of the stars is changed 47. Why do astronomers have to monitor a lot of stars to capture transits? A. Transits last a very short period. B. Most planetary systems don’t have transits. C. Transits only occur for a small number of stars. D. Not more than 10% planetary systems have visible transits from Earth. 48. The word “habitable” in paragraph 4 most likely means ________. A. livable B. adjustable C. sustainable D. visible 49. Dwarf stars may be good places to spot Earth-like planets because ________. A. dwarf stars are limited in number B. their planets are close to the Earth C. the closeness of the habitable zone to dwarf stars aids detection D. the brightness of dwarf stars to Earth improves their visibility 50. What is the main purpose of the text? A. To describe planet-finding processes. B. To inform readers of planet-finding methods. C. To promote space tools used to find habitable planets. D. To argue that human beings can soon find habitable planets. D 47. D 48. A 49. C 50. 根据第二段中“The most direct approach is to take a picture of it with a telescope. However, a more effective way is to use “the Doppler technique”. This involves analyzing starlight for evidence that the moving position of the star is affected by the gravity of a planet.(最直接的方法是用望远镜对其进行拍摄。然而,更有效的方法是采用“多普勒技术”。这包括分析星光,以寻找表明恒星移动位置受到行星引力影响的证据)”可知,科学家利用多普勒技术来分析星光,想要找出恒星的运动是否会受到某个行星引力的影响。故选D。 【47题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“At most a tenth of all planetary systems are oriented so that these mini-eclipses (迷你日食) — called transits (凌日) — are visible from Earth. So, astronomers must monitor a lot of stars to catch just a few transits.(实际上,所有行星系统中只有大约十分之一的系统处于这样的位置,使得这些迷你日食(即凌日现象)能够从地球上观测到。 故选A。 根据最后一段中“Additionally, dwarf stars are dim (暗淡的), so the habitable zone lies closer in. If the planet is closer to the star, it’s easier for astronomers to detect a transit observation. A close-in planet also has a stronger pull on its star. That makes it easier to detect with the Doppler method.(此外,矮星本身比较暗淡,因此宜居带会更靠近恒星。 根据第一段“With the fast development of astronomy, astronomers are eager to find a clue of the familiar: planets that are like Earth. By pushing technology to the limits, astronomers are rapidly approaching the day when they can find another Earth.(随着天文学的迅速发展,天文学家们渴望找到一个熟悉的线索:像地球一样的行星。通过将技术推向极限,天文学家们正迅速接近能够找到另一个地球的那一天)”结合全文内容可知,文章主要介绍了天文学家寻找类地行星的方法和目标,科学家们使用望远镜、多普勒技术和监测恒星光度变化等方法来寻找类地行星。由此推断,这篇文章的主要目的是向读者介绍行星探测的方法。故选B。 D Psychologists have long been in disagreement as to whether competition is a learned or a genetic component of human behavior. Whatever it is, you cannot but recognize the effect competition is exerting in academics and many other areas of contemporary life. Psychologically speaking, competition has been seen as an inevitable consequence of human drives. According to Sigmund Freud, humans are born screaming for attention and full of organic drives for fulfillment in various areas. Initially, we compete for the attention of our parents. Thereafter, we are at the mercy of a battle between our base impulses for self-fulfillment and social and cultural norms which prohibit pure indulgence. Current work in anthropology (人类学) has suggested, however, that this view of the role of competition in human behavior may be incorrect. Thomas Hobbes, one of the great philosophers of the seventeenth century, is perhaps best remembered for his characterization of the “natural world,” that is, the world before the imposition of the will of humanity, as being “nasty, brutish, and short.” This image of the pre-rational world is still widely held, reinforced by Charles Darwin’s highly influential work, The Origin of Species, which established the doctrine of natural selection. This doctrine, which takes for granted that those species best able to adapt to and master the natural environment in which they live will survive, has suggested that the struggle for survival is an inherent human trait which determines a person’s success. Darwin’s theory has even been summarized as “survival of the fittest” — a phrase Darwin himself never used-further highlighting competition’s role in success. As it has often been pointed out, however, there is nothing in the concept of natural selection that suggests that competition is the most successful strategy for “survival of the fittest.” Darwin asserted in The Origin of Species that the struggles he was describing should be viewed as metaphors and could easily include dependence and cooperation. Many studies have been conducted to test the importance placed on competition as opposed to other values, such as cooperation — by various cultures, and generally conclude that Americans uniquely praise competition as natural, inevitable, and desirable. In 1937, the world-renowned anthropologist Margaret Mead published Cooperation and Competition among Primitive Peoples, based on her studies of several societies that did not prize competition, and, in fact, seemed at times to place a negative value on it. One such society was the Zuni Indians of Arizona, and they, Mead found, valued cooperation far more than competition. After studying dozens of such cultures, Mead’s final conclusion was that competitiveness is a culturally created aspect of human behavior, and that its prevalence in a particular society is relative to how that society values it. 51. What does the author think is easy to see in many areas of contemporary life? A. The disagreement on the inevitability of competition. B. The consequence of psychological investigation. C. The effect of human drives. D. The impact of competition. 52. According to psychology, what do people strive to do following the initial stage of their life? A. Fulfill individual needs without incurring adverse effects of human drives. B. Indulge in cultural pursuits while keeping their base impulses at bay. C. Gain extensive recognition without exposing pure indulgence. D. Satisfy their own desires while observing social conventions. 53. What do we learn about the “natural world” characterized by Thomas Hobbes? A. It gets misrepresented by philosophers and anthropologists. B. It gets distorted in Darwin’s The Origin of Species. C. It is free from the rational intervention of humans. D. It is the pre-rational world rarely appreciated nowadays. 54. What can we conclude from Darwin’s assertion in The Origin of Species? A. All species inherently depend on others for survival. B. Struggles for survival do not exclude mutual support. C. Competition weighs as much as cooperation as a survival strategy. D. The strongest species proves to be the fittest in natural selection. 55. What conclusion did Margaret Mead reach after studying dozens of different cultures? A. It is characteristic of humans to be competitive. B. Americans are uniquely opposed to cooperation. C. Competition is relatively more prevalent in Western societies. D. People’s attitude towards competition is actually culture-bound. 51. D 52. D 53. C 54. B 55. I went on to study Environmental Science at university, and became interested in marine (海洋的) biology when I did my master’s degree. That’s when I realised that there was a possibility to do more for Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, many people would associate marine life only with seafood, and few people would consider it as a part of nature to be appreciated. Although our marine life is highly diverse, our waters have been overfished for more than 40 years. Records show that, decades ago, Hong Kong had such high production of seafood that it supported about 90% of the local demand. Today, at least 90% of the seafood we eat has to be imported to meet local demand, as our waters are so overfished that they can no longer support the local appetite. Despite this shift, we are still a city in love with seafood — according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Hong Kong has the second highest annual seafood consumption per capita (人均) in Asia — but consumers are barely aware of where their seafood comes from and which species are threatened. There is a lot of room for improvement in Hong Kong. Improving local fishery management policies and increasing the coverage of Marine Protected Areas, as well as conducting the relevant research to inform decisions, could move the city towards greater sustainability in this area. And consumers should avoid eating seafood that is on the threatened species list. As a general rule of thumb, if people are not sure what the species is, they should choose something else that they are more familiar with. With the marine ecosystem already weak and easily destroyed, the greatest threat is continued ignorance and inaction. It is time for us to show that we can also be part of the solution. If each person plays their part — even for just one meal a day — Hong Kong would already be on its way to making considerable progress towards sustainable seafood consumption. 56. According to the passage, what is the main problem in Hong Kong now? (no more than 5 words) __________________________________________________________________________________________ 57. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 mean? (1 word) __________________________________________________________________________________________ 58. What is the main idea of Paragraph 4? After looking at the pie chart, I’d like to share my opinions on healthy screen time. The chart shows how students spend screen time on weekends. Entertainment like games and videos takes up 45%, the largest part. Social media accounts for 30%, while learning only makes up 20%. Other uses take merely 5%. Clearly, most students waste most screen time on fun instead of study. Too much screen entertainment causes lots of problems. It harms our eyes and ruins our sleep. Worse still, it takes up time for outdoor exercise and face-to-face communication, making us weak and less sociable. To solve this, we should set strict time limits for entertainment. Besides, we can combine screen time with online learning to make screens serve our growth. Only in this way can we keep a healthy digital lifestyle. Too much screen entertainment causes lots of problems. C With the fast development of astronomy, astronomers are eager to find a clue of the familiar: planets that are like Earth. D Psychologists have long been in disagreement as to whether competition is a learned or a genetic component of human behavior. My love for animals began through watching wildlife documentaries when I was a kid.
