Some experts discover that the weaker maths abilities in English-speaking children are related to English number words. However, the Chinese language has simpler number words. Chinese expresses maths concepts (概念) more clearly than English.
Chinese has just ten basic number words. English, however, has more than twenty. The trouble starts at “11”. English has a word (“eleven”) for that number. The Chinese language has words that can be translated as “ten-one”—spoken with the “ten” first. That makes it easier for the Chinese children to understand the place value (位值). Students can easily see the number system is based on the units of 10.
English number words over 10 don’t make the place value clear. Words for numbers 13 to 19 change the order of the ones and tens. Children are more likely to confuse (使迷惑;混淆) 17 with 71. Therefore, children working with English number words have a harder time doing complex calculations (复杂计算). They make more mistakes.
It also feels more natural for Chinese speakers than for English speakers to use the “make-a-ten” method. When adding two numbers, Chinese students often break down the numbers into parts and regroup them into tens and ones. For example, 9 plus 5 becomes 9 plus 1 plus 4. This method greatly helps students work out maths problems. Many teachers in America are also teaching their students the “make-a-ten” method. However, they are having a hard time because of the confusing English number words.
Now you should feel lucky that you are learning maths in China. Thanks to your native language, all the maths problems have become less difficult and less confusing.
29. Why does Chinese express maths concepts more clearly than English?
A. Because the Chinese like maths best. B. Because the Chinese are much cleverer.
C. Because Chinese has easier number words. D. Because Chinese has more number systems.
30. According to the text, how many basic number words are there in English?
A. Ten. B. Eleven. C. Nineteen. D. More than twenty.
31. According to the text, if you use the “make-a-ten” method to work out maths problems, 8 plus 7 will become ______.
A. 1+7+7 B. 4+4+7 C. 8+2+5 D. 8+3+4
32. What’s the best title for the text?
A. The way to work out maths problems B. The only language for learning maths
C. Why students don’t like to study maths D. Why Chinese students are good at maths
It was another Tuesday in my old college teacher Morrie’s home. I noticed some newspapers by the table.
“Are you still learning about news?” I asked Morrie.
“Yes,” he replied. “Do you think it’s strange, Mitch? Do you think because I’m dying, I shouldn’t care what happens in this world?”
“Maybe I shouldn’t care.” he said, “But now that I’m in pain (疼), I feel closer (更紧密) to people who feel the same. The other night, on TV, I saw homeless people living in the street, crying for help…and I just started to cry. I feel their pain just like my own. I don’t know any of these people. But I feel close to them.”
His eyes were filled with tears (眼泪). I tried to change the subject (话题), but he went on.
“I cry all the time now,” he said. “Never mind.”
I was amazed. Working in the news business, I covered stories where people died, talked to heart-broken family members. I never cried. I didn’t like showing my feelings. But here was Morrie, facing a serious illness, crying for people far away. Is this what happens at the end of life? Maybe death can make strangers feel and cry for one another.
Morrie blew his nose and asked, “It is okay with you, isn’t it? Men crying?”
“Sure,” I said, too quickly.
But he still went on, “One day, I’m going to show you it’s okay to cry.”
We laughed because he said the same thing in class nearly twenty years earlier.
“Mitch, you asked about taking care of people I don’t even know. Can I tell you the most important thing I’ve learned with my illness?”
“What’s that?”
“The most important thing in life is to learn how to give out love, and to let it come in.” Morrie said.
His voice dropped, “Let it come in. We think we don’t deserve (值得) love. We think if we let it in, we’ll become too soft. But—love is the only rational (理性的) act.”
I nodded, like a good student. I moved over to give him a gentle kiss and felt his weak hands on my arms.
“So, you’ll come back next Tuesday?” he said softly.
(—Adapted from Tuesdays with Morrie)

36. What life lesson can we learn from Morrie?

①Memory is the ability (能力) to remember things. A good memory can help us do better in school, such as language-learning. A few people are born with amazing memories, but most people need to improve their memories by practising. Here are some secrets (秘密) about memories.
②We can still remember things happened in our childhood (童年) but not those last week. In fact, if the things have strong connections with our feelings in our mind, we can remember them longer. When things happen for the first time, children often have strong feelings. Also, parents tell us the interesting or funny stories from our childhood again and again. As a result, we remember them much better.
③It’s natural for common people to forget the new words which they learnt yesterday. Hermann Ebbinghaus wrote a book called Memory and showed a famous forgetting carve. According to him, the quickest loss (失去) of memory happens during the first two days after learning. That means going over what we’ve learned during this time can help us very well to remember the information.
④A 15-year-old sometimes forgets things, but that doesn’t mean his or her memory is getting worse. Our memory gets the top at the age of 25. At that point, we can remember over 12,000 pieces of information in a minute. But after this age, the brain (大脑) starts to get smaller. By middle age, our memory is much worse than when we were young.
37. Why is it easier to remember things in our childhood?
a. Because they were special. b. Because we got strong feelings from them.
c. Because they were helpful. d. Because we heard them many times.
A. ad B. bd C. ac D. bc
38. Which is the right picture for Hermann Ebbinghaus’s forgetting curve?
A. B.
C. D.
39. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. A person has his or her best memory at the age of 25.
B. A fifteen-year-old’s memory is worse than a middle-aged man’s.
C. A person’s memory gets worse only because the brain gets smaller.
D. A child usually remembers over 12,000 pieces of information in a minute.
40. How is the passage organized?
A. B. C. D.

Cleaning a house seems like a job that never ends. Have you ever stood in the middle of an untidy house, looking at the books and magazines around? You have the thought of tidying them up, but you give up before you start. Well, you are not alone. But luckily, I have found some nicer ways to make myself willing to do the housework.
Have less stuff (物品)
Reducing (减少) the number of the things is a good way to make house cleaning easier. Every few months, I throw away some things we don’t need or use. It could be old clothes that no longer fit or books that I have already read and won’t pick up again. Fewer things make the house tidier and easier to clean.
Do a bit each day
Cleaning the whole house without a break can be really difficult so I do a little each day. Monday could be the day to sweep the floors, Tuesday to make the bed, Wednesday to clean the bathroom, and so on. When the weekend comes, I can enjoy my free time watching a film or reading a good book instead of spending hours cleaning.
Start with the easiest task
When there’s a long list of housework, it can be hard to know where to begin. If so, I will start with the easiest task. When I complete the easiest task successfully, it will give me a sense of achievement. In this way, I will be more willing to go on with the rest of the housework.
Make housework interesting
Who says housework has to be boring? I’ve found that adding a little fun can make a big difference. I love listening to music and cleaning at the same time. As the music plays, I find myself dancing around. Time flies by and before I know it, the house is clean. I feel excited at the same time. It’s a win-win situation.
In short, housework doesn’t have to be something you hate. By using these ways, you can make it easier, or more enjoyable. You might even surprisingly find that you don’t mind cleaning at all.

Dear Simon,
I am excited to hear you are coming to our school as an exchange student. Our school has some special lessons. For example, we have DIY lessons where we make small handicrafts like paper-cutting and model planes. We also have outdoor biology lessons to observe plants and animals in nature, which is very interesting.
About learning Chinese, I have some advice. First, you can watch Chinese cartoons or short videos to improve your listening. Second, try to speak Chinese with classmates every day, even simple sentences like “Ni hao” and “Xie xie”. Third, keeping a Chinese diary can help you remember new words and expressions.
You are expected to enjoy your stay here. I look forward to seeing you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
