The first to notice was Mrs. Thompson. She couldn’t find her favorite knitting needles, which she had left on the coffee table the night before. The townspeople began to suspect (怀疑) each other. Neighbors who had once been friendly now ____26____ each other with suspicion. One evening, a group of townspeople gathered at the town hall to discuss the situation. Mr. Brown, the town’s mayor, tried to calm everyone down. Here are some facts about the Big Five. Leopard “I call them ninja cats because they’re sneaky (鬼鬼祟祟的) and harder to notice,” Borrego says. The big cats haul (拉) large kills, such as zebra, into a tree to eat alone, in peace. They don’t exactly get along with their fellow Big Fiver, the African lion. African lion These big cats are “not born into a rank,” Borrego says. “They don’t have a social hierarchy (等级体系) that lasts forever.” One male may be dominant (占支配地位的) over the others, but that can change at any time. Lion society is also matrilineal (母系的), “so the females hold the territories (领土).” African buffalo These cow-like animals often gather together by the thousand, forming large groups to protect against lions. That’s why a lion attacks a buffalo is taking a huge risk of dying. Male and female buffalo both have horns (角),but the males curve upward and fuse (融合) together, forming a solid bony plate (骨板) called a boss. African elephant The biggest of them is the African savanna (热带草原) elephant, which can weigh up to seven tons. The African forest elephant was declared (正式宣布) a separate species after genetic testing in 2010 showed big differences between the forest and savanna ones. Savanna elephants are large enough to pull up trees to make grasslands and overall increase biodiversity (生物多样性). Rhinoceroses There are two species-the black rhinoceros and the white rhinoceros-and five subspecies between them left in Africa. Due to poaching (非法猎取), the western black rhino was declared extinct (灭绝的) in 2011. The last male northern white rhino died in 2018, with only two females remaining-making that subspecies functionally (功能上) extinct. 36. What do leopards do with their large kills? A. Leopards bury them in peace. B. Leopards eat them alone in trees. C. Leopards share them with others. D. Leopards leave them for their fellows. 37. What is the feature (特点) of African lions? A. They are born with a social rank. B. One male lion is always the dominant leader. C. In lion groups, the females are in control of the land. D. They have a fixed order in their group that stays the same. 38. What does Borrego probably do? A. Borrego is a wildlife researcher studying African wildlife. B. Borrego is an expert only on the behavior of African lions. C. Borrego is a conservationist working to protect Asian animals. D. Borrego is a tour guide concentrating on safaris (游猎) in Africa. 39. Why is it risky for lions to attack African buffalos? A. Buffalos weigh up to seven tons. B. Buffalos form a circle when at risk. C. Buffalos often gather in large groups. D. Buffalos have horns that protect them. 40. Which of the following sentences is TRUE according to the passage? A. Northern white rhino was declared extinct in 2018. B. Male and female buffalo both have solid bony plates. C. Savanna elephants can increase biodiversity in some way. D. The biggest of the Big Five is the African forest elephant. B Everywhere you look, there are either constant warnings about the health risks linked with eating too many ultra-processed foods (UPFs), or constant temptations (诱惑) to eat them anyway. But while condemned (谴责) by those promoting (促进) a healthy lifestyle, UPFs may be less important to your lifespan (寿命) than the quality of your diet overall, according to a Harvard University study. Based on the research published in the British Medical Journal (期刊), UPFs often include additives (添加剂) like colouring and flavours, and are typically high in energy, sugar, fat and salt, without the benefits of vitamins or fiber. Certain foods can negatively influence your health more than others, with the worst being ready-to-eat meat and seafood products, along with fizzy drinks, dairy-based desserts and highly processed breakfast foods such as sugary cereals. Over 34 years, researchers tracked the health of nearly 75,000 women and nearly 40,000 men in the US. Every two years, these people reported on their health; and every four years they completed a detailed diet questionnaire (调查问卷). The research team split the participants into quarters depending on their consumption of UPFs: the lowest quarter consumed about three UPF servings per day while the highest quarter ate seven UPFs per day. They discovered that those in the top quarter had a four percent higher risk of all deaths. There was also a nine percent higher risk of death by specific causes, such as neurodegenerative diseases like dementia (老年痴呆). Crucially, the study found that the link between UPF consumption and death was weakened when they factored in overall diet. This means a higher quality of diet (for example, one containing lots of vegetables, fruits and whole grain items) may be more important than the quantity of UPFs you eat. The researchers say that you don’t need to limit all UPFs, just those that most affect your long-term health. “It might not be as simple as those who ate more ultra-processed foods were more likely to die earlier,” says dietitian Dr Duane Mellor, who wasn’t involved in the study. “It’s quite possible that these foods might displace (取代) healthier foods from the diet.” 41. What is the function (功能) of the first sentence in Paragraph 1? A. To express an idea. B. To summarize the main idea. C. To introduce the topic. D. To show the author’s attitude. 42. Which of the following doesn’t belong to UPFs? A. ready-to-eat seafood products B. sugary cereals C. ready-to-eat meat D. whole grain items 43. How did the scientists collect the research-related data? ①medical checkup ②participants’ reports ③questionnaires ④diaries A. ①② B. ②③ C. ①③ D. ②④ 44. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage? A. All UPFs should be restricted if we want to live a healthy life. B. A higher quality diet is suggested for the benefit of a healthy body. C. Nine percent higher risks of all deaths in the top quarter are linked to consumption of UPFs. D. Those who ate more ultra-processed foods had a higher chance to die earlier than those who ate less, regardless of overall diet quality. 45. Where can this passage be taken from? A. A science journal. B. A research paper. C. A travel brochure. D. A health magazine. C At first, Manuel Vera just wanted to do something productive for his neighbors during the COVID-19 lockdown. Maybe he could help them get outside by tuning up (调校) their bikes in need of a little TLC (照料关怀), he thought. So he posted to an online group in his Silver Spring, Maryland, neighborhood, offering to fix people’s bikes for free. All he asked was to be reimbursed (付还) for any new parts (零件). “Then I started thinking about all the bikes that people have at home that never get used,” says Vera, 74, who is retired from the local power company. Soon he was asking neighbors to donate any bikes collecting dust in their garage and basements. Then, in his tidy little backyard shed (棚), he’d get to work. Vera’s workspace is nearly as tricked out as his renewed bikes. The green gardening shed, its inner walls lined with tools, holds a workbench and a repair stand, and even has AC (air conditioner) and Wi-Fi. You’ll know Vera is at work when classic rock or folk music floats out its open doors. Space is tight, so Vera prefers to work alone—though not for lack of volunteers. Kabul’s (阿富汗) fall in 2021 saw an influx (涌入) of refugees (难民) to Silver Spring. It’s home to families, young professionals, retirees like Vera, and a large community of immigrants and refugees. Vera tunes up the donated bikes and hauls them to parks, food banks, and churches. He camps out with his Free Bikes sign and waits for people to wander over (闲逛). Then he pairs people up with the perfect new ride and watches them pedal away happy. His first giveaway saw six bikes go in under 30 minutes. “People ask a few questions like, ‘Are they really free?’” says Vera. “The answer is: ‘Yes. If you like this bike, it’s yours.’” Now neighbors know him as the Bike Dude, and they keep him busy with a steady supply of bikes, helmets and locks to redistribute (重新分配). The local farmer’s market collected 36 bikes at its first attempt. Vera is constantly tagged in Facebook Buy Nothing group posts when locals seek to either acquire (获得) or offload sets of wheels. In addition to the adults and kids he meets at his Free Bikes events, eager customers come from local resettlement agencies and other nonprofits. The groups tell Vera the height, gender and age of a rider, and he delivers a fitting bicycle to their door. He’s happy to make the trip. 46. What inspired Vera to start fixing bikes at first? A. He wanted to start a business. B. He needed to earn extra money. C. He hoped to help neighbors stay active. D. He was looking for a new hobby after retirement. 47.
