You’ll have to tick 31,536,000 times every year.” “That many?” cried the new clock. “I can’t possibly do that!” It was so worried that it almost stopped working. Then the other old clock spoke. “Don’t listen to him, young one. You don’t have to tick all those times at once. You only need to tick once every second.” “Once every second?” said the new clock. “That sounds easy. I can do that!” So it began to tick happily — tick, tock, tick, tock — one second at a time. A year passed quickly. The new clock had ticked 31,536,000 times without even noticing it. 19. Why was the new clock worried? A. It was not as shiny as the old clocks. B. A big task becomes easy if we do it step by step. C Have you ever studied hard for a test, only to forget almost everything the next morning? The problem might not be how you studied, but how you slept. Scientists have found that sleep plays an important role in memory. During the day, new information goes into a part of the brain called the hippocampus (海马体). You can think of it as a small notebook: it can hold information for a short time, but it doesn’t have much space. When you fall into deep sleep at night, your brain gets to work. The hippocampus replays what you learned during the day and sends the important parts to the cortex (大脑皮层), which works like a hard disk. There, the information becomes long-term memory. That’s why a good night’s sleep can make your memories much stronger. In one study, two groups of students learned the same list of words. One group slept after learning, while the other group stayed awake. The next day, the students who had slept remembered much more than the others. So what does this mean for you? Experts suggest that teenagers should get 8 to 10 hours of sleep every night. Review important points before bed, and put your phone away at least half an hour before you sleep. Staying up late to study may seem helpful, but it can actually make you forget more. 23. What does the underlined word “replays” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Goes over again. B. Throws away. C. Writes down. D. Plays games. 24. Which shows the right process of forming long-term memory according to Paragraphs 2 and 3? A. learn → cortex → deep sleep → hippocampus → long-term memory B. learn → hippocampus → deep sleep → cortex → long-term memory C. learn → deep sleep → hippocampus → cortex → short-term memory D. learn → cortex → hippocampus → deep sleep → short-term memory 25. What did the study in Paragraph 4 show? A. Staying awake helped students learn faster. B. Students learned better in groups. C. Students who slept after learning remembered more. D. Short lists of words are easier to remember. 26. What is the best title for the passage? A. Sleep Well, Remember Better B. How to Stay Awake at Night C. The Different Parts of Our Brain D. Why Teenagers Need Phones D At the 20th Asian Games in Japan this autumn, one of the brightest stars was a schoolgirl from Baoding, Hebei. Her name is Yu Zidi, and she was only 13 years old. In September, Yu won all three of her individual races — the 200m butterfly (蝶泳), the 200m individual medley (混合泳) and the 400m individual medley. Each time, she broke the Asian Games record. In the 400m race, she finished almost four seconds ahead of the second swimmer and broke a record that had stood since 2014. At the end of the Games, she was named the female Most Valuable Player (最有价值运动员). Yu’s swimming story started by chance. When she was six, her father took her to a water park to cool off on a hot summer day. A swimming coach noticed how well she moved in the water and encouraged her to train. Three years later, she joined a swimming club and began training seriously. Now she practises every day with Olympic medallist Li Bingjie, whom she calls her “idol” and “big sister”. Success did not come all at once. At the 2025 World Championships, she finished fourth in three races — each time just missing a medal. Instead of giving up, she went home and trained even harder. Although she is a star in the pool, Yu is still shy in front of cameras. When asked if interviews were the hardest part, she laughed and said, “Every time I just want to float off somewhere else.” After her third gold, she said calmly, “I have gained a lot from these Asian Games, but there are also some regrets. I will go back and review what I did not do well.” Many people believe she will shine at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. But for now, she is simply taking it one race at a time. 27. How did Yu Zidi begin her swimming journey? A. Her father was a swimming coach. B. A coach found her at a water park. C. She joined a club at the age of six. D. She saw Li Bingjie swim on TV. 28. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. Yu broke three Asian Games records in Japan. B. Yu won a gold medal at the 2025 World Championships. C. Yu has trained with Li Bingjie since she was six. D. Yu enjoys answering reporters’ questions. 29. What do Yu’s words after her third gold show about her? A. She was unhappy with her coach. B. She wanted to stop swimming. C. She keeps learning from what she didn’t do well. D. She thought the races were too easy. 30. What is the best title for the passage? A. The History of the Asian Games B. How to Become a Swimming Coach C. A Water Park in Hebei D.
