The long hard working hours eventually led them to a breaking point. They realized something had to change, to step away from the busy, competitive life for a simpler, freer life. So, they sold most of their belongings, left their chef jobs, and headed to the peaceful countryside of New Zealand. Their journey began in a small house in West Auckland. While enjoyable, it wasn’t perfect for their future plans. They dreamed of a home designed completely for their long-term needs, so they decided to build their own small house — one set on land, without stairs, and with plenty of space to breathe. The couple’s move with only the necessities well prepared them for tiny house living. “We basically removed everything we didn’t need,” Jen said. They joined a unique community on 3.5 acres of shared land, which perfectly matched their values of eco-friendly living. “This is one reason why it was budget-friendly,” Steve explained. With money from selling their previous home, they put $450,000 into building their new house, which allowed them to pay in full. The home operates completely on solar energy, even powering their two electric cars. The greatest benefit of this lifestyle was early retirement. Mortgage-free (无贷款) living coupled with their solar-powered setup cut their yearly living costs from $50,000 down to just $3,000. This dramatic reduction made early retirement not just a dream but a practical reality — the freedom to stop working and fully enjoy their days, which their long and tiring years as chefs never could provide. Today, Steve and Jen fill their days with writing, gardening, and spending time with their large, deaf dog Iggy. Their home is more than just a place to live; it shows that leaving the competitive rush behind for a simpler life doesn’t mean giving up comfort. Instead, it’s about choosing what matters most — happiness, freedom, and the peace of living in a space that truly feels their own. 24. What made Steve and Jen look for a change? A. The heavy work pressure. B. The hope to find better jobs. C. Their love for New Zealand. D. Their dream of building a house. 25. What did the couple’s new housing choice bring? A. Increased space for family meetings. B. A stronger community connection. C. More money for family business. D. A low-cost and green lifestyle. 26. What is the couple’s retirement life like? A. Competitive and stressful. B. Tiring but adventurous. C. Colorful and enjoyable. D. Lonely but peaceful. 27. What does Steve and Jen’s new way of living mainly show? A. Green power cuts housing costs. B. A simple life can offer satisfaction. C. Slowing down leads to personal loss. D. Early retirement requires full preparation. C It was the men’s skating finals of the Winter Olympics when I was 16. Someday I’d be in the Olympics. In fact, it was my dream. That night I lay on our living room floor excitedly watching the battle between the Brians: American Brian Boitano facing Brian Orser in Canada. Both of them had been world champions. Both of them deserved to win. Naturally I was for Brian Boitano, a northern Californian like me. We had skated on the same ice. I held my breath in amazement. Boitano performed successfully. The gold medal! I jumped in the air when his score went up. But what happened next is what I’ll never forget. Brian Boitano sat in front of the camera with his coach, surrounded by a group of journalists. He was talking about his career and his medal, talking to the whole world. A terrible sinking feeling went through me. I could never be in the Olympics, I thought. I could not talk in public like that. Just the idea of a press conference terrified me. I loved skating partly because I didn’t have to talk. I could express myself with my jumps and dances better. I didn’t have to stand up and give a speech like some teachers expected. I could feel the blood rush to my face if I thought a teacher was going to call me. I stared at my shoes. I was sure I’d make a fool of myself. The next day I was at the rink (溜冰场)as usual. I was practising a combination of jumps that had once seemed impossible. I worked very hard the next few years — on the ice and especially off. After journalists talked to me and although my heart pounded every time I spoke to them, I got to know them. They became familiar faces. And they got to know me. So when my big moment came four years after Brians, I was ready. Sometimes I think my biggest accomplishment was not winning the gold but talking to the press afterwards. When you do the thing you fear most, you put an end to fear. Fear can stop you dead in your tracks. Fear can kill a dream. What are you afraid of? What scares you more than anything else? This year, walk right up to it and conquer it, step by step. 28. What information can we get from the second paragraph? A. The author lived a hard life. B. The author comes from Canada. C. The author once skated with Orser. D. The author wished Boitano to win the match 29. What is one of the reasons why the author liked skating according to the passage? A. She could build up her body to be healthier. B. It could help her to get closer to her idol. C. She could better express herself with body language. D. The possibility of her being a world champion was great. 30. What the author felt the most satisfied with is that ____. A. she lived up to her coaches expectations B. she became a world champion as planned C. she managed to overcome her inner fear eventually D. she handled the balance between her career and life 31. What does the author mainly want to tell us? A. Face a fear bravely. B. Practice makes perfect. C. Bad times make a good man. D. Failure is the mother of success. D Much like humans, self-driving cars need a way of predicting (预测) what will happen so they don’t stop too suddenly or make sharp movements that could be dangerous. Traditional automated (自动化的) systems use cameras and computer programs trained on large amounts of data to recognize and follow objects. Then, they pass the information to another system that predicts how those objects will move based on their recent paths. That works well when the real world behaves like the training set. But the system fails when it doesn’t. “Weather changes, unexpected human behavior, and uncommonly seen events all could possibly affect even the most advanced camera-driven systems,” said study co-author Srikanth Saripalli. OmniPredict, a new AI system, aims to make self-driving cars better at understanding. Instead of treating people just as moving points, this system applies a different method. Camera views are paired with details about the situation, such as where the crosswalk is, whether a person is partly hidden by a parked car, or whether someone is looking toward the car. It then uses that information to predict what people are likely to do next — stop, move into the street, walk across the street, or step back. Basically, the system can tell the difference between someone chatting near the roadside and someone getting ready to cross the street, and it offers the newly-gained predictions to the drivers quickly as the situation changes. Importantly, it held up when the researchers added harder cases in tests: hidden walkers, mixed lighting, and varied street layouts (布局). Drivers can react more effectively to possible dangers. The result is that there are fewer stressful situations, fewer near-misses, and the traffic might move more smoothly. “If a system can predict what might happen, it could have great effects. In addition to city streets, the system that can understand body movements, signs of uncertainty, stress signs, and danger warnings could possibly help soldiers and police officers in the future. They may also offer valuable support to safety teams working in fast-changing, dangerous environments. Our goal in the project isn’t to replace humans, but to help them with a smarter partner,” Sari said. 32. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “fails” in Paragraph 2? A. Struggles. B. Explores. C. Improves. D. Reports. 33. What is special about OmniPredict? A. It tracks both car and human paths. B. It depends on basic machine learning. C. It is quick at locating moving objects. D. It combines camera data with scene context. 34. What is the key effect of the system? A. Lowering car operational costs. B. Building a safer street environment. C. Encouraging human-friendly city designs. D. Upgrading public transportation scheduling. 35. What is expected of the system according to Srikanth? A. Aid in high-risk tasks. B. Reduce human mistakes. C. Take on projects independently. D. Strengthen teamwork among workers. Everyone wants to perform well at school. Her best friend, Lucy, came to invite her to participate in the competition, but Emily said, “I’m afraid to take part in it.” Her mother said, “It’s okay; just do it bravely.” Emily followed her mom’s advice and decided to have a try. The day came. Emily and Lucy went to the competition site. But she was too timid to walk onto the stage. She had been waiting until others finished singing. She shakily forced herself to stand on the stage. She started to sing, but her voice was so low. What’s worse, she was so nervous that she forgot the lyrics (歌词) after singing a few words. Being laughed at by others, embarrassed and shy, she ran away from the stage. Some boys ran after her and said, “Emily, coward (胆小鬼)! Emily, coward!” Emily didn’t argue with them. What she wanted was to go back home as quickly as she could. Finally, she rushed into the house, hugged her mom and cried sadly. “Well, my poor girl, don’t cry. Tell me what happened to you,” asked her mom. Emily told her mother what she had experienced. Listening to her, her mom cupped her face and said, “It doesn’t matter, girl. As long as you practice singing more in front of strangers, you will become braver little by little. So, my girl, don’t be beaten by a failure. You can go out to practice singing every day. 【答案】24. A 25. D 26. C 27. B 【解析】 【导语】文章讲述了厨师夫妇史蒂夫和詹不堪高强度工作压力,辞去工作搬到新西兰乡村自建小屋,过上低成本、太阳能供电的简约生活,实现提前退休,收获幸福与自由,证明简单生活也能带来满足感。 【24题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中“The long hard working hours eventually led them to a breaking point. (这种生活方式最大的好处就是能够提前退休。没有房贷的生活,再加上太阳能供电系统,让他们每年的生活开销从5万新西兰元锐减至仅3000新西兰元)”可知,他们的新房子带来的是低成本且环保的生活方式。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“Today, Steve and Jen fill their days with writing, gardening, and spending time with their large, deaf dog Iggy. Their home is more than just a place to live; it shows that leaving the competitive rush behind for a simpler life doesn’t mean giving up comfort. 【答案】28. D 29. C 30. C 31. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者克服自己害怕在公众场合讲话的恐惧心里,经过努力练习在奥运夺冠后勇敢面对记者采访的故事;通过这次比赛作者明白要敢于面对生活中的恐惧。 【28题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“That night I lay on our living room floor excitedly watching the battle between the Brians: American Brian Boitano facing Brian Orser in Canada. Both of them had been world champions. Both of them deserved to win. Naturally I was for Brian Boitano, a northern Californian like me. We had skated on the same ice. 根据第四段中“I loved skating partly because I didn’t have to talk. I could express myself with my jumps and dances better. I didn’t have to stand up and give a speech like some teachers expected. I could feel the blood rush to my face if I thought a teacher was going to call me. I stared at my shoes. I was sure I’d make a fool of myself. 根据文章倒数第二段中“I worked very hard the next few years — on the ice and especially off. 根据文章第一段“It was the men’s skating finals of the Winter Olympics when I was 16. Someday I’d be in the Olympics. In fact, it was my dream. Fear can kill a dream. What are you afraid of? What scares you more than anything else? This year, walk right up to it and conquer it, step by step. (恐惧会让你止步不前。恐惧可以扼杀梦想。你在怕什么?你最害怕的是什么?今年,直接走向它,一步一步地征服它。) ”可知,作者通过自身经历告诉我们要勇敢地面对恐惧、战胜恐惧。故选A项。 D Much like humans, self-driving cars need a way of predicting (预测) what will happen so they don’t stop too suddenly or make sharp movements that could be dangerous. A. Struggles. 【答案】32. A 33. D 34. B 35. A 【解析】 【导语】文章介绍了自动驾驶的新型人工智能预测系统OmniPredict。不同于传统自动驾驶系统,它结合摄像头画面与现场场景信息预判行人行为,减少道路险情。这套技术除用于自动驾驶外,未来还可以辅助士兵、警察等高危岗位工作人员。 【32题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第二段中“That works well when the real world behaves like the training set. But the system fails when it doesn’t. 根据第三段中“Camera views are paired with details about the situation, such as where the crosswalk is, whether a person is partly hidden by a parked car, or whether someone is looking toward the car. (摄像头画面会搭配现场场景细节,例如人行横道位置、行人是否被停放车辆遮挡、行人是否看向车辆。)”可知,OmniPredict能将摄像头画面和现场环境信息(场景背景)相结合。 【34题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“Importantly, it held up when the researchers added harder cases in tests: hidden walkers, mixed lighting, and varied street layouts (布局). Drivers can react more effectively to possible dangers. The result is that there are fewer stressful situations, fewer near-misses, and the traffic might move more smoothly. (重要的是,在测试中加入隐蔽行人、混合光照、多样街道布局这类高难度场景时,该系统依然表现稳定。驾驶员可以对潜在危险做出更有效的反应。最终,危急情况更少、险撞事故减少,交通通行也会更加顺畅。)”可知,该系统能让驾驶员更有效应对潜在危险,减少道路险情与事故,核心作用是打造更安全的道路环境。 【35题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“In addition to city streets, the system that can understand body movements, signs of uncertainty, stress signs, and danger warnings could possibly help soldiers and police officers in the future. They may also offer valuable support to safety teams working in fast-changing, dangerous environments. Everyone wants to perform well at school. Although her singing was pleasant to hear, she lacked courage and never sang in front of strangers. One summer, the neighborhood would hold a singing competition. No matter who is listening to you, go on singing and never stop. I believe there will be a harvest for you.” 注意: (1)续写词数应为150左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: Emily listened to her mother carefully and followed her mom’s suggestion. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Going on singing, she walked into the park. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】例文 Emily listened to her mother carefully and followed her mom’s suggestion. The next day, she began to practice singing outside. Gradually, her courage became greater and greater, and the sound of her singing was also louder and louder. Months later, she could sing as she was walking. A naughty boy who had laughed at her before cried to her, “Emily, coward! Emily, coward!” Emily felt depressed. However, she chose to ignore his behavior. Going on singing, she walked into the park. Many people were singing and dancing there. Hearing her beautiful voice, some stopped to listen to her singing and clapped for her. A grandma smiled to her and said, “Oh, little girl, your voice is really beautiful!” Encouraged by the words, Emily felt pleased and could sing confidently in front of strangers. In the following year, at the singing competition, Emily walked onto the stage bravely, and her loud and beautiful voice of singing moved all the people, including those who had laughed at her. Her mother was delighted to see that the timid girl became a brave one. 词汇激活 行为类 ①嘲笑:laugh at/make fun of ②忽视:ignore/neglect/turn a blind eye to 情绪类 ①沮丧的:depressed/frustrated ②高兴的:pleased/delighted/cheerful 【点睛】[高分句型1] A naughty boy who had laughed at her before cried to her, “Emily, coward!
