前文提到“The top seller would win a new chess set.”,因此活动当天要宣布的是销售比赛的获胜者,对应后文Sonia成为销量第一的情节,winner“获胜者”符合逻辑;designer“设计师”、manager“经理”、organizer“组织者”均不符合。
根据后文“Sonia had a thick envelope of coins and cash.”
后文Sonia所说“My mum and dad always sell a lot for me.”,可知Parker认为Sonia赢是因为她父母的帮助,parents“父母”符合语境;friends“朋友”、teachers“老师”、classmates“同学”均不符合。

Do you know the five main senses we have? They are touch, taste, sight, smell and hearing. They are controlled by different parts of our brains. So we call the brain our built-in “BeiDou”. Brains help our bodies work smoothly. Try this: close your eyes and touch your nose. It’s easy, right? That’s because our brains can receive messages about where our body parts are. We can also stand on one leg without falling down. If we lose our balance, our brains will give us orders to fix it.
★ . Tests show that people see spider pictures faster than flowers. Some researchers also found that people react (作出反应) to loud noises faster than to a friend’s voice. Scientists aren’t completely sure about the reasons. Some suggest that this skill might come from ancient times. Our ancestors were often faced with predators. So they had to protect themselves from dangerous animals like spiders and tigers, or they would lose their lives. Until today, we still jump at sudden noises or shadows (影子) in dark rooms.
Here is more about brains. Can you imagine seeing colors when you hear music, or tasting candy when you see the sunshine? It’s called sense mixing. Scientists think this happens when different senses intermingle Another fact is that temperature sometimes influences our senses. Some people can feel storms coming through knee pain. So we often joke that we’re “human weather apps”. Also, our brains are able to make adjustment (调整) to some senses. If someone can’t see well, his hearing or touch might become stronger.
Though scientists have done much research on the brain, there’s still a lot to do. Have you ever wondered why some people are better at sports? What’s the secret to improving memory? Then it’s time for you to start your discovering journey.
26. What do the two examples in the first paragraph show?
A. Brains help our bodies work well. B. Human brains are different.
C. Humans can touch their noses easily. D. People have many living habits.
27. Which of the following can be put in ★ ?
A. It’s fun to study our ancestors’ life B. It’s easy to learn about senses
C. Animals help people in many ways D. Brains are also life-saving heroes
28. Which animal in the following pictures is probably a “predator”?
A. B. C. D.
29. According to paragraph 3, what might happen if your senses mix?
A. You can tie your shoes without looking.
B. You taste sweetness when seeing an apple.
C. You jump when someone shouts suddenly.
D. You feel pain in your knees before the rain comes.
30. What is the writing purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To improve people’s memory. B. To encourage brain studies.
C. To show the value of our brains. D. To admire scientists’ efforts.
26. A 27. D 28. A 29. B 30. B

Schools play an important role in our lives, as we spend much of our time there. Why do we go to school? Some believe that we go to gain knowledge, while others think that socializing (社交) is a necessary part of school life.
We go to school mainly to get qualification (学历) and learn facts, as the role of school is to develop us into adults and prepare us for working life, so its purpose becomes clear: gaining knowledge. Certificates (证书) of education level are required for further study and jobs. Learning subjects well helps us pass entrance exams, which provides choices for our paths to the future. It is also necessary for us to learn facts and develop an understanding of the world. For example, the knowledge of Physics and Chemistry can explain certain things in daily lives, which can help solve some problems. In Geography and History classes, we can learn about the way our environments are shaped over time. These allow teenagers to connect with the world and understand time and space that are beyond their reach.
However, some people believe socializing like working in groups and making friends is more important. They can help improve interpersonal skills and cultural understanding, and are good for our mental health. These are the keys to our growth and prepare us for the future.
At school, group work needs us to communicate and socialize with others. In this way, we can increase our ability to express ideas clearly, which makes us easily understood by others. Such skills are of great use in workplaces and cannot be developed from textbooks. It is also important for us to make friends at school. Research has shown that close friendships can help reduce stress, especially during teenage years. Making friends at school does not mean that we can’t learn facts well. Instead, the friendships can encourage us to study, so school should actively support students to develop healthy friendships.
I think school is the place where students should gain knowledge and develop socializing skills as well.

Deep in the desert, a man has spent more than forty years solving the “illness” of ancient paintings.
His name is Fan Zaixuan. He is an expert at protecting and repairing wall paintings in the Dunhuang Academy In fact, the “patients” are the ancient wall paintings. The wall paintings in Dunhuang Mogao Caves are beautiful. However, after thousands of years, their surfaces slowly come off and fall down, which makes people feel sad.

Workers must take away harmful salt that breaks the paintings. To solve this problem, Fan Zaixuan and his team have been working for eight years and finally found a practical way. They turned the harmful salt into water and developed new materials to take in the liquid (液体). So far, the research team led by Fan Zaixuan has repaired more than 500m² of broken wall paintings in Mogao Caves. These ancient treasures shine again and keep their beauty after thousands of years.
