M: I have. It’s helpful, but I’m worried students might just copy its answers instead of thinking.
W: That’s true. Some users also say it sometimes explains the wrong steps, though. But I use it as a tutor — I try to solve the problem myself first, then check its explanation.
M: That’s a smart way to use it. I usually get stuck on physics formulas. Last week it spent ten minutes walking me through one formula, and I finally got it.
W: Then you should ask it to show you the process, not just the final answer.
M: Good point. Maybe I’ll give it another try tonight.
W: Just remember, it’s a tool, not a shortcut.

20. What will the listeners do right after the tour?
A. Visit the farm shop. B. Attend a talk. C. Grow their own food.
C 18. A 19. B 20. A
W: Welcome to Green Sky Urban Farm, everyone. I’m Anna, and I’ll be your guide today. As you can see, this is not a normal farm — our vegetables grow in tall towers inside this old factory building, without a single grain of soil. We started in 2021 with just ten towers, and now we have over two hundred. We use 95 percent less water than traditional farms, and the lights above the plants are powered by solar panels on the roof. That means every tomato you see here has a very small carbon footprint. In a moment, we’ll walk through the growing area. Please stay on the marked path — the paths are narrow, and the plants are delicate. You’re welcome to take photos, but don’t touch the leaves or taste any of the vegetables. After the tour, please head down to the first-floor shop, where we sell fresh vegetables and homemade juice. Later, at three o’clock, our manager will give a talk on how cities can grow their own food. I hope you enjoy the visit.
A
Four House Museums Worth a Day Trip
New England’s old houses hold the region’s history within their walls. Four of the most rewarding are within an hour’s drive of Boston, and each tells a different story.
The Stevens-Coolidge Place, North Andover
What began as a modest 18th-century farmhouse grew, under the two Coolidge sisters, into a comfortable summer estate surrounded by acres of designed landscape. Visitors can wander the rose garden and the walled, Asian-inspired garden, then tour the house, whose rooms are furnished with a notable collection of Arts-and-Crafts furniture. Open Friday to Sunday, May through October. Admission covers both house and grounds.
Gibson House Museum, Boston
A narrow 1860 brownstone in Boston’s Back Bay, the Gibson House survived almost unchanged as three generations of the same family lived and died within it. The wallpaper, furniture and even the family’s personal possessions remain exactly where they were. Guided tours run Wednesday to Sunday; photography is not permitted inside, to protect the fragile interiors
Longfellow House — Washington’s Headquarters, Cambridge
This grand colonial mansion served as George Washington’s headquarters in 1775-1776, and decades later became the home of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Tours cover both the general’s wartime study and the poet’s writing desk, where he worked on some of his best-known poems. The garden, planted in Longfellow’s day, is open year-round and free of charge, even when the house is closed.
Castle Hill on the Crane Estate, Ipswich
Rising 165 feet above the sea, this 59-room mansion was built in the 1920s for a wealthy industrialist. Visitors can tour the grand rooms, stroll the landscaped grounds, and walk the mile down to the barrier beach. The estate is open from May to October; house tours should be booked in advance, as tickets sell out quickly.
21. Which house has a collection of Arts-and-Crafts furniture?
A. Gibson House Museum. B. Longfellow House.
C. The Stevens-Coolidge Place. D. Castle Hill.
22. What is special about the Gibson House Museum?
A. It has kept its original look over the years. B. It rises high above the sea below.
C. It once served as a general’s headquarters. D. It allows free entry to its garden.
23. What do the Stevens-Coolidge Place and Castle Hill have in common?
A. Both share the same visiting season. B. Both offer free garden admission.
C. Both were built in the 18th century. D. Both require tickets to be booked in advance.

When I turned 17, my mother pointed out that I was the only one of my friends without a summer job. I had imagined working in a bookstore or a café, but the only ad I answered was taped to a lamppost: “Frame shop seeks part-time help. Must have careful hands.” I took the job mainly to make a little money of my own. The shop, run by Mr. Alvarez, smelled of pine and varnish (清漆), and at first the work seemed unremarkable. I cut mats (衬边), tightened screws and carried empty frames to the back room. Mr. Alvarez, who had framed pictures for forty years, never seemed in a hurry, which only made me more impatient.
The change came on a rainy Tuesday. A woman in a dark coat laid a water-stained drawing on the counter. It was a simple painting of a yellow house, worn at the corners, its edges gone soft. “My father made this weeks before he died,” she said quietly. “No one else would touch it. They said it was too far gone.” She turned to leave, as if expecting the same answer.
Mr. Alvarez did not say a word for a long moment. Then he put on a pair of white gloves, laid the drawing flat on his worktable and began. Over three days, he eased the paper onto fresh board, repaired the tears and matched the colors with a mat the color of aged cream. The woman cried when she picked it up, and for the first time I understood why he did what he did.
That was the summer I stopped watching the clock. I stayed late to learn how to handle delicate paper, how to choose a mat that honored a picture rather than competed with it. I had taken the job for the money. I left with something Mr. Alvarez never said out loud: that careful hands can give back what people thought was lost for good.
24. Why did the writer take the job at the frame shop?
A. To follow his friends’ example. B. To improve his hand skills.
C. To make his own income. D. To help out the shop owner.
25. How did the writer feel about the work at first?
A. Enthusiastic. B. Doubtful. C. Grateful. D. Restless.
26. What do we learn about Mr. Alvarez?
A. He once worked as a painter. B. He takes his work seriously.
C. He is slow to make decisions. D. He often complains about his work.
27. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The writer regretted taking the job. B. The writer planned to open his own shop.
C. The writer became a good painter. D. The writer found deeper meaning in his work.
C 25. D 26. B 27. D

C
When a family of beavers (河狸) — two adults and three kits — stepped out of their wooden crate into a wetland park in west London in October 2023, local residents turned up to cheer. Their swim marked the return of wild beavers to the British capital after an absence of roughly four centuries. The animals had been hunted to extinction in Britain as early as the 1500s, their fur highly valued across Europe.
Beavers are, however, far more than a charming sight. Conservationists call them ecosystem engineers. By felling (啃倒) trees and building dams across streams, they hold back rainwater and create ponds. A single family can build several dams in a year, turning a narrow stream into a series of still pools. These structures slow the floods that would otherwise rush into towns; they also trap mud and chemicals from nearby farms, so that the water leaving a wetland is far cleaner than the water entering it. Research by the University of Stirling found that beaver dams can cut the pollution reaching rivers by up to 95 percent. The ponds, meanwhile, become lively habitats for water voles (水田鼠), frogs and fish.
Now conservationists want the animals to spread further. Scotland has allowed wild beavers to remain since 2016, and they now live on several rivers. In England, the government only agreed in February 2025 that beavers could be released into the wild. Wildlife groups hope to set about 100 animals free over the next two years. Across Europe, where the species was also wiped out in many areas, the population has climbed back to roughly 1.5 million.
Not everyone is delighted. Farmers worry that flooded fields will damage crops. Yet supporters argue that, with careful management, the beavers offer a cheap natural tool for fighting both floods and dirty water.
28. What do we know about beavers in Britain before their return?
A. They lived in city parks. B. They were wiped out by hunting.
C. They were used to control floods. D. They spread across Scottish rivers.
29. Why are beavers called ecosystem engineers?
A. They build dams to reduce floods and clean water. B. They repair riverbanks faster than others.
C. They design parks for tourists. D. They cut reserve running costs.
30. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. How beavers live in towns. B. Why beavers are protected by law.
C. Benefits beavers bring to nature. D. Dangers facing local wildlife.
31. What is farmers’ attitude to the beaver project?
A. They fear crop loss from floods. B. They demand a total ban on releases.
C. They doubt the dams’ effect. D. They fear losing all their farmland.
B 29. A 30. C 31. A
根据第一段中的“The animals had been hunted to extinction in Britain as early as the 1500s, their fur highly valued across Europe. (早在16世纪,这些动物就在英国被猎杀至灭绝,它们的皮毛在整个欧洲都非常珍贵。)”可知,河狸在回归英国之前因被捕猎而灭绝。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“By felling (啃倒) trees and building dams across streams, they hold back rainwater and create ponds. The ponds, meanwhile, become lively habitats for water voles (水田鼠), frogs and fish.(通过啃倒树木并在溪流中筑坝,它们阻挡雨水并形成池塘。
根据第二段中的“Beavers are, however, far more than a charming sight. Conservationists call them ecosystem engineers. (然而,河狸远不只是一道好看的风景。环保人士称它们为生态工程师。)”以及该段随后详细描述的河狸筑坝带来的减缓洪水、净化水质、创造栖息地等生态效益可知,第二段主要介绍了河狸给自然带来的益处。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“Farmers worry that flooded fields will damage crops. (农民们担心被淹没的田地会损害庄稼。)”可知,农民对河狸项目的态度是他们担心洪水造成作物损失。
D
Sometime early in this century, a quiet agreement settled over the middle class. We agreed that being busy was a sign of seriousness, that a packed calendar proved you mattered, and that to be seen resting was to be seen as lazy. The result, sociologists argue, has not been greater achievement but a quiet crisis of “time poverty”: the constant sense that there is never enough of the day left for the things we actually care about.
The research on this is remarkably consistent. People who feel they have enough free time tend to report higher happiness and better sleep than those who earn more but feel constantly rushed. Yet rather than protect their hours, many people respond by trying to “optimize” them: filling every gap, listening to podcasts while walking, treating even a quiet evening as another task to be managed. Far from solving the problem, these habits often make it worse, because they leave no room for the mind to wander. And wandering, it turns out, is when a surprising amount of thinking, creativity and plain feeling actually happens.
None of this is an argument for laziness. The point is more subtle (微妙的). A life spent squeezing usefulness out of every minute is, in the end, a life ruled by the clock rather than guided by what people value. The people who feel they have time, studies suggest, are not those with fewer obligations. They are the ones who deliberately guard a small, unscheduled block of the day — letting an afternoon go unplanned, allowing a conversation to run long, doing nothing at all on purpose. A parent who takes ten unhurried minutes with a child, or a worker who stares out of a window instead of checking a phone, is not wasting time. They are feeding the part of the mind that schedules never reach.
Rest, in other words, is not the opposite of a meaningful life. It is one of the ways such a life is built.
32. Why does the author mention the “quiet agreement” in paragraph 1?
A. To praise today’s busy lifestyle. B. To introduce a new social class.
C. To advise people to work harder. D. To explain the root of time poverty
33. Why do “optimizing” habits often make time poverty worse?
A. They rob people of greater happiness. B. They keep the mind constantly occupied.
C. They sharply reduce work efficiency. D. They cause people to oversleep.
34. What does the underlined word “squeezing” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Wasting. B. Maximizing. C. Enjoying. D. Recording
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The Advantages of a Full Schedule B. How to Balance Work and Leisure
C. The Art of Doing Nothing on Purpose D. Why Free Time Is a Waste
D 33. B 34. B 35. C
根据第一段中“We agreed that being busy was a sign of seriousness, that a packed calendar proved you mattered, and that to be seen resting was to be seen as lazy. The result, sociologists argue, has not been greater achievement but a quiet crisis of “time poverty” ( 我们一致认为忙碌意味着认真,日程排满证明你重要,被人看见休息就等于被视为懒惰;社会学家指出,其结果并非更大的成就,而是一场悄然的“时间贫困”危机)”可知,作者提及这一“隐性共识”是为了追溯“时间贫困”产生的思想根源。
根据第二段中“Yet rather than protect their hours, many people respond by trying to ‘optimize’ them: filling every gap, listening to podcasts while walking, treating even a quiet evening as another task to be managed. Far from solving the problem, these habits often make it worse, because they leave no room for the mind to wander.( 然而许多人不是守护自己的时间,而是试图’优化’时间:填满每一处空隙,走路时听播客,连安静的夜晚也当作另一项任务来管理。这些习惯非但没有解决问题,反而使其加剧,因为它们不给大脑留下任何漫游的余地)”可知,“优化”习惯让大脑始终被占用、无法放空,从而使时间贫困加剧。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段划线单词句中“A life spent squeezing usefulness out of every minute is, in the end, a life ruled by the clock rather than guided by what people value.( 从每一分钟里都squeezing用处的人生,终究是被时钟所支配,而非被人们真正看重的东西所引导)”,并结合前文第二段批判把每段空隙都填满(filling every gap)、连安静的夜晚也当作一项任务来管理,以及后文主张刻意留出一小段不排计划的时间(guard a small, unscheduled block),可推知 squeezing 在此指“把每一分钟都用到极致、榨尽其用”,与B项 Maximizing(使最大化)同义。
C项“The Art of Doing Nothing on Purpose(有意为之的无所事事之艺术)”精准概括全文主旨,正确。

Building Healthy Screen Habits as a Teen
For most teenagers, screens are everywhere — in our hands, on our desks, in the classroom, and even at the dinner table. Used wisely, they can connect us with old friends far away, help us finish homework in half the time, and open a window to the wider world. ___36___ The good news is that a few simple habits can keep technology serving you, rather than quietly taking over your days.
•Set a “screen-free” hour before bed.
The blue glow from phones and computers makes it harder for the brain to relax into sleep. Yet many of us lie in bed scrolling (滑动屏幕) long after we meant to turn off the light. ___37___ Try charging your phone outside the bedroom and letting that last hour belong to a paper book, soft music, or a quiet conversation with family.
• ___38___
Not all screen time is created equal. Endless short videos are designed to keep us swiping, and an hour later little may remain in your memory. A video call with a cousin in another city, or a well-made educational series about a topic you love, can truly add to your life. ___39___ Rather than asking only “how long have I spent on my phone?”, ask “how well did I spend it?”.
•Make screen time intentional.
Before you unlock your phone, pause for a second and honestly ask: why am I picking this up? ___40___ This tiny pause may feel unimportant at first, but repeated a hundred times a day, it quietly puts you back in charge.
Screens are here to stay. The goal is not to throw your phone away, but to make sure you are the one holding it.
A. Of course, the opposite is also true.
B. Focus on the quality, not the quantity.

由上文“Used wisely, they can connect us with old friends far away, help us finish homework in half the time, and open a window to the wider world.(如果使用得当,它们可以让我们和远方的老朋友取得联系,帮我们节省一半的时间完成作业,并且为我们打开一扇通向更广阔世界的窗户。)”以及下文“The good news is that a few simple habits can keep technology serving you, rather than quietly taking over your days.(好消息是,一些简单的习惯可以让科技为你服务,而不是悄悄占据你的日子。)” A选项“Of course, the opposite is also true.(当然,反过来也是成立的。)”能承上启下,符合题意,该选项中“the opposite”呼应上文“Used wisely”,与下文“a few simple habits can keep technology serving you”相呼应。
由上文“Yet many of us lie in bed scrolling (滑动屏幕) long after we meant to turn off the light.(然而我们很多人在上了床之后,明明打算关灯,却还久久滑动着屏幕。)”以及下文“Try charging your phone outside the bedroom and letting that last hour belong to a paper book, soft music, or a quiet conversation with family.(试着把手机放在卧室外充电,让睡前最后的一小时留给纸质书、轻柔的音乐或是和家人安静的交谈。)” F选项“That extra hour is exactly what robs you of rest.(就是这额外的一小时夺走了你的休息时间。)”能承上启下,符合题意;该选项中的“That extra hour”呼应上文“lie in bed scrolling (滑动屏幕) long”,“robs you of rest”呼应下文“letting that last hour belong to a paper book, soft music, or a quiet conversation with family”。
由下文“Not all screen time is created equal. Endless short videos are designed to keep us swiping, and an hour later little may remain in your memory. A video call with a cousin in another city, or a well-made educational series about a topic you love, can truly add to your life.(并不是所有的屏幕使用时间都是同等的。无尽的短视频就是用来让我们不停滑动,一小时过后几乎留不下什么记忆。但和外地堂亲的一通视频电话,或是制作精良的、关于你喜爱主题的教育节目,却真的可以丰富你的生活。)”可知,本段主旨是关注使用的质量而不是时长。B选项“Focus on the quality, not the quantity.(注重质量,而不是数量。)”

由上文“Before you unlock your phone, pause for a second and honestly ask: why am I picking this up?(在解锁手机之前,停顿片刻,诚实地问问自己:我为什么要拿起手机?)”以及下文“This tiny pause may feel unimportant at first, but repeated a hundred times a day, it quietly puts you back in charge.(这个小小的停顿一开始或许微不足道,但一天重复上百次,它就能悄悄把控制权交还给你。)” G选项“Most of the time, you will discover you don’t really need it.(大多数时候,你会发现自己并不是真的需要它。)”能承上启下,符合题意;该选项中“discover you don’t really need it”呼应上文“why am I picking this up?”;代词“it”指代上文的“your phone”。

The Ancient Chinese Art of Joinery Without Nails
When British architect James Miller first stepped inside a 600-year-old Chinese temple in Shanxi, he expected to find metal nails holding the wooden frame together. What he found instead was ___56___ would run through his mind for years: an entire building held together by nothing but carefully carved wooden joints.
The technique, ___57___ (know) as sunmao (mortise and tenon), has stood at the heart of Chinese architecture for over 7,000 years. Craftsmen cut minute notches into heavy beams, ___58___ (eventual) allowing one piece to lock perfectly into the next. The resulting frame is so solid that it has survived centuries of earthquakes, yet it bends just enough ___59___ (absorb) the shock rather than snapping.
The genius of sunmao lies not just in its engineering but in the quiet philosophy beneath it. Every joint strikes a balance between strength and give, ___60___ (reflect) a belief that true stability comes not from force but from things finding their proper place. Nowadays, a growing number of architects worldwide ___61___ (study) this ancient wisdom, applying its lessons ___62___ earthquake-resistant buildings and self-assembling furniture alike.
For Miller, the experience reshaped ___63___ way he understood construction. “The Chinese didn’t merely build houses,” he observed. “They built a conversation between materials.” Seven millennia on, sunmao still inspires a new ___64___ (generate), proving that the oldest ideas can also be the most ___65___ (advance).

Dear Ms. Smith,
It’s a fantastic idea to launch our school’s English radio station.
It was the week of my final exams, the coldest week of the winter, and every dark morning I caught the first bus. On Monday my mother pushed two pairs of thick warm gloves into my bag. “Two pairs?” I asked. “One for you, and one for someone who needs it,” she smiled. I rolled my eyes and hurried out, thinking only of my exam card and my notes.
At my stop I always saw the same old street cleaner in a thin orange jacket. His hands were bright red in thin gloves, and a hot bottle of tea hung at his side, but he never once complained. While we waited, he swept the snow off the shelter seat and broke the ice under our feet. Once I watched him lay an old towel in a paper box for a shaking cat. None of us ever said thank you. We were all too busy with our phones, and I was the busiest.
Thursday came with a snowstorm. I had slept ten minutes late, and I ran through the white streets with my coat flying open. Near the stop my feet slid on a sheet of ice and I fell hard. When I got up, my exam card was gone. I dug through the snow on my knees, but the card had disappeared. The bus would come in just three minutes, and without it I could not take the exam. My eyes burned, and my frozen fingers could hardly move.
Then a small yellow light moved slowly through the snow, with the soft sound of sweeping. It was the old man. He saw me on my knees and hurried over, calling something the wind carried away.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
He bent down beside me and shone his light over the snow.

When I reached home that evening, I knew what I wanted to do.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
He bent down beside me and shone his light over the snow. “My exam card,” I cried. His light crossed the ice and caught a small white corner. He cleaned it, gave it back, and pressed the warm bottle into my frozen hands. Only then did I see his own hands — red and cracked, in thin gloves. I pulled out the second pair. “These are for you.” He shook his head, but I insisted. With shining eyes he put them on, and I ran for the bus, the card safe in my pocket.
When I reached home that evening, I knew what I wanted to do. I messaged my classmates, and we gathered hats, gloves and tea. Early the next morning we met the cleaner at our stop, where the cat was safe in its box by the seat. The old man’s eyes grew wet. “I sweep before the children come,” he said softly, “so no one falls.” I had thought only of exams, while he had quietly cared for us. Mother was right: warmth, when passed to someone who needs it, never grows cold.
①归还:give back/return
②坚持:insist/persist
①寒冷:cold/chill/frigid
②温和地:softly/in a soft voice/tenderly
【点睛】[高分句型1] Only then did I see his own hands — red and cracked, in thin gloves.

As you can see, this is not a Normal farm. Our vegetables grow in tall towers inside this old factory building without a single grain of soil. We started in twenty twenty one with just ten hours, and now we have over two hundred. We use ninety five percent less water than traditional farms. And the lights above the plants are powered by solar panels on the roof. That means every tomato you see here has a very small carbon footprint. In a moment, we'll walk through the growing area. Please stay on the marked path. The paths are narrow and the plants are delicate. You're welcome to take photos, but don't touch the leaves or taste any of the vegetables. After the tour, please head down to the first floor shop where we sell fresh vegetables and homemade juice. Later at three o'clock, our manager will give a talk on how cities can grow their own food.

C. Replace screen time with outdoor activities.
D. They clearly affect us in very different ways.
E. A calm body is the first step toward deep sleep.
F. That extra hour is exactly what robs you of rest.
G. Most of the time, you will discover you don’t really need it.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
