My first day in high school will never be forgotten. When I got to the classroom in the morning, I saw that Mr. Brown had already put our names on our tables. After walking a few steps, I saw my name on the table right in the middle of the classroom. As I walked up to my table, my heart sang. “It would be great to sit there. I could see everything easily,” I thought to myself.
A while later, the other students entered one by one and took their own seats. And then Mr. Brown started talking. He showed us his classroom rules and tried to explain them. All of a sudden, a student called Tony started singing loudly. All the while he moved his body to the music. His desk mate Josh couldn’t understand why he was doing these things. Then he stood up and talked to Mr. Brown, “I don’t want to sit with this strange guy. Can I swap seats with someone else in this room, please?”
Mr. Brown didn’t answer his question directly. He stopped what he was doing and turned on his computer. Then he showed us some pictures about autistic (患自闭症的) kids. He explained that autistic kids have little self-control. They seem to do things that are beyond everyone else’s understanding. However, they can do many other great things, in the field of art or music for example. Then he told us that Tony was not good at maths, but loved songs. “He can sing thousands of songs. What’s more surprising is that he can remember all the words without any mistakes.” In the end, Mr. Brown added that although autistic kids were different, they should be loved.
Since that first day in high school, I became Mr. Brown’s admirer (崇拜者). I was pretty sure Mr. Brown would get all of us on the right track.
4. How did the author feel when seeing his table?
A. Annoyed. B. Upset.
C. Excited. D. Unhappy.
5. What did Mr. Brown do in the class first?
A. He introduced Tony.
B. He showed some pictures.
C. He got his computer ready.
D. He explained the classroom rules.
6. In what way was Tony special?
A. He acted politely.
B. He was understanding.
C. He knew music very well.
D. He had a mathematical mind.
7. What does the author think of Mr. Brown?
A. He is off the right track.
B. He has too many admirers.
C. He is a great teacher.
D. He is too different to be loved.

The decision to delay (延迟) morning arrival times in Nanjing has caused a wide discussion about how to balance students’ academic (学业的) needs with their health. While some people support the change, others worry about its possible effects.
Supporters of the policy argue that sleep is very important for teenagers’ growth. They point out that students who do not get enough sleep often feel tired, worried, or unable to focus. In contrast, well-rested students are more likely to take an active part in class and perform better in exams. Some experts also note that a good breakfast plays an important role in students’ health and learning. With a later start time, students can have enough time to eat well and prepare for the day.
People who disagree with the policy, however, express concerns about the influence on academic performance. They argue that reducing morning study time might lead to lower grades, especially for students who need more practice or review. Some parents worry that students will become lazy if they do not have to get up early. They also question whether schools can really improve classroom efficiency (效率) enough to make up for the lost time.
To better study the effects of the new schedule, education departments in Nanjing plan to collect feedback from students, parents, and teachers over the next few months. They will record changes in students’ sleep quality, attendance rates (出勤率), and academic performance. If the results show that the policy is beneficial, it may be carried out in more schools. If problems arise, further changes may be made.
In the long run, experts suggest that improving students’ well-being requires the efforts of schools, families, and society. Schools should not only change schedules but also improve teaching quality. Parents should help their children develop good sleep habits and create a quiet environment at home. Students themselves should learn to manage their time wisely and avoid staying up late. Only in this way can the goal of reducing burden and improving quality be truly achieved.
8. What do supporters of the policy believe?
A. Students should get up as early as possible.
B. Sleep is not important for academic performance.
C. Well-rested students are more likely to perform better.
D. After-school services are more important than sleep.
9. How does the author develop the argument in the passage?
A. By listing historical events related to education.
B. By presenting both supporting and opposing views.
C. By describing personal experiences of students.
D. By comparing different countries’ school systems.
10. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The policy will be carried out in all schools in Nanjing.
B. Schools play a more important role than families in students’ well-being.
C. Students can make up for lost learning time by studying more efficiently.
D. The new schedule will probably be changed according to future results.
11. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The benefits of delayed school start times.
B. The reasons for students’ sleep problems.
C. The importance of after-school services.
D. The discussion about delayed school start times and their effects.

Yesterday, my 6-year-old son taught me a valuable lesson that stayed with me for hours. It might sound surprising, but he taught me a powerful lesson.
A few weeks ago, I had to travel for work, and I couldn’t spend much time with my son. Even though he is a bit stubborn (固执的), he’s growing up fast. That’s when the lesson happened. While I was eating dinner, he was in the bath, and suddenly he started crying. I asked him what happened, and he said, “ Shampoo (洗发水) got in my eyes.”
I got really worried and rushed into the bathroom. I tried to help by splashing (泼) water on his eyes, but things got worse when he rubbed his eyes with his soapy hands. I was nervous, telling him not to use his hands.
Out of the blue, he said, “Calm down! Dad.” I amazed me. I realized I was making things worse. I stopped splashing water, washed his hands, and calmly told him to use his hands to clean his eyes while blinking (眨眼). It worked, and he felt better.
I’m not sure where he learned to stay calm, maybe from me or somewhere else. But the bigger lesson is that when we face problems, acting emotionally and quickly might not be best. Staying calm and thinking about the right solution is better.
In today’s tough job market with many people losing their jobs, it’s easy to feel worried. My son’s lesson reminded me that staying calm and taking a moment to relax can help us face challenges with a clear mind, more energy, and better solutions.
12. What can we infer about the author before the incident?
A. He often taught his son how to stay calm.
B. He was too busy with work to accompany his son.
C. He had rich experience in dealing with eye problems.
D. He was a patient father who rarely got nervous.
13. Why did the situation get worse?
A. The son rubbed his eyes with soapy hands.
B. The shampoo was too strong for the son’s eyes.
C. The author splashed too much water on his son’s eyes.
D. The author didn’t respond in time.
14. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the passage?
A. To introduce his 6-year-old son’s good habits.
B. To share a lesson he learned from his son.
C. To complain about the pressure of his work.
D. To advise parents to spend more time with kids.
15. What does the author’s experience show?
A. Knowledge is power. B. Still waters run deep.
C. Actions speak louder. D. Parenting is learning.

Dear Lily,
I am sorry to learn that you are suffering from heavy schoolwork and have to stay up late to finish homework, which makes you feel exhausted in class. I can fully relate to your situation because I had a similar experience when I first entered senior high school.
To solve this problem, I’d like to offer two suggestions. First, it is highly recommended that you make a to-do list and prioritize your tasks, which helps improve efficiency and avoid wasting time. Second, why not take short breaks between classes to refresh yourself? Only by balancing study and rest can you maintain energy for the whole day.
I hope my advice will be helpful and wish you all the best in your studies.
Yours,
Li Hua
